We visited Toro Ko Sushi in San Antonio during a baseball tournament, drawn by its high Yelp ratings. Unfortunately, our experience was extremely disappointing, both in terms of service and the quality of the sushi, which was not worth the price.
When we arrived, the restaurant was nearly empty, so we expected prompt service. However, as more customers arrived and were seated, their food was served while we waited over 30 minutes without any updates. Our server seemed to ignore us, and when I finally asked about our order, he vaguely responded that they were “still working on a couple of rolls” but assured us they would be out soon. I requested that they start bringing out the completed rolls, as there was no reason to let them sit and lose freshness. Additionally, we had to ask for plates, as the server appeared unaware of basic table setup before food arrived.
After finishing our meal, we had to request the check because the server repeatedly passed by without asking if we needed anything else. When we received the bill, we were shocked to see an automatic 20% gratuity added, justified by the server because our party consisted of five people. In my opinion, a tip should be earned through excellent service, which was far from the case here. To make matters worse, later that night, I received an email with my credit card receipt showing an additional $20 tip added by the server. When we called to address this, we were told it was a “clerical error.”
Overall, the poor service, mediocre sushi, and questionable billing practices made this a highly disappointing experience. We will not be returning.
