Five D.C. Bakeries Bank on Light Yeast Doughnuts | Eater DC

"Daniele Catalani built Toscana Market’s doughnut program around northern Italian bomboloni that are softball-sized, light, and chewy thanks to a mix of high-gluten and cake flours; a plain version dusted in sugar and lemon zest strips away competing flavors so the dough’s texture shines. Catalani tested recipes in the early-morning hours at his Cucina Al Volo stall and honed consistency once he moved into a space with commercial fryers, and since opening the day after Thanksgiving he’s had to double production as demand grew. He started by offering plain and filled versions (Nutella, pistachio spread, vanilla pastry cream) as weekend brunch specials and is now adding a bomboloni display case to showcase up to 20 rotating flavors—from birthday cake and s’mores to maple-bacon and even a smoked-salmon bomboloni with everything-spice cream cheese and caper—because customers keep coming back." - Gabe Hiatt

Where to Find Food Deals and Political Cocktails in D.C. on Inauguration Day 2021 | Eater DC

"I read that recently opened Toscana Market is taking preorders for a $55 pickup brunch box that feeds three to four people and includes fried Buffalo wings, beef arancini, meats, cheeses, Italian sliders, grilled vegetables, and fruit." - Tierney Plumb

Toscana Market Opens With Italian Doughnuts from Al Volo Chef Daniele Catalani | Eater DC

"I visited the new alimentare opened the day after Thanksgiving in Mt. Vernon Triangle by chef Daniele Catalani, and it feels like a hybrid market and takeaway counter: half of the 3,000-square-foot space at 414 K Street NW is devoted to groceries (Italian olive oil, tomatoes, cookies, panettone, 10-inch focaccia, salumi, cheese sold by the wheel, and jams) while the other half sells around 15 shapes of colorful fresh pasta, soups, meal-kit boxes with regional Italian themes, frozen portions of Catalani’s pasta sauces (vodka, eggplant Norma, bolognese, and duck or lamb ragùs), and prepared pickup items such as appetizer portions of pork and meatballs, chicken Parm sandwiches, margherita pizzas and entrees like beef lasagna or pork shank ossobuco on fettuccine; a pasta box for four ($39.50) lets you choose four shapes (think green spinach fusilli or paprika-red pappardelle) and four sauces. Because the project took three years and opened during the pandemic, there are a few outdoor tables and an online ordering system, and Catalani has created a back-of-market stage for small chef demonstrations and planned cooking classes with butcher-block tables spaced more than six feet apart. I also saw the bomboloni—yeasty doughnuts dusted in sugar and lemon zest and filled with Nutella, pistachio, cannoli cream (with plans for savory versions like bacon, cream cheese, smoked salmon and capers)—which Catalani predicts will become the shop’s signature item; when they first sold them from a cart they sold out in about an hour, and for now bomboloni sales will be limited to Saturdays and Sundays." - Gabe Hiatt

Had lunch there and their signature cream filled Italian pastries. Had some focaccia-style breads with a variety of toppings. They were really good and nice easy lunch. Really liked the market itself, as it has many fresh deli items, sweet and savory pastries and breads. Wines, salads, sandwiches, many gourmet pasta options. We went there on the Underground Donut Tour DC, which was a fun way to see some the sweet treats in DC. I am sure if you live in the area and need an Italian specialty this is a place to go!

I went to Toscana Market for the cooking class on September 27, 2025. The chef running the session was kind, personable, and patient, and the food was DELICIOUS. Tickets were on the pricey side, but considering both the quality and quantity of food that we got, not to mention the complimentary Limoncello and wine, they were well worth it. Seriously — we ate a lot while we were there and still brought home enough leftovers to feed us over the next few days. I got the tickets as a birthday present for my partner's birthday and 100 percent recommend it either as a date or as a bonding activity. The staff made it a wonderful experience, and I look forward to coming back!

This is really good if you’re into fresh Italian pasties. They also have delicious pastas that you can choose from. I ordered the meatball sandwich which was around $13. It’s very filling! My favorite part about it was how fresh the meat tasted and the cheese was sooo gooey. I recommend visiting the the place if you’re on K street. 👍🏼

I really enjoyed this market. It's very similar to some of the markets I experienced while driving through southern Italy. Small and inviting with a friendly staff. There are so many options in this store, if you want to cook from scratch they have the ingredients. If you want to cook with fresh pre made pasta that's an option too. They also have fully cooked food if you just want to grab take out. You can also stop in to try all the house made sauces and desserts!

My cooking class here was one of the best experiences I’ve had living in DC. Everything was created with immense attention to detail. The space is beautiful. The staff are attentive, friendly, and patient with all skill sets. The food was delicious and bountiful. A perfect experience for a date night, evening with friends, or even a work event. My Italian cooking class started with limoncello spritz and focaccia. We made ravioli, gnocchi, and watched our chef make fresh mozzarella for an amazing burrata. All finished off with a ricotta cheesecake dessert. We left with 2-3 meals worth of our own made pasta. Cannot recommend this more. Thank you Daniele and Carlos!

Incredible food, but what really sets this place apart is their cooking classes. The classes are in high demand so you have to get your tickets in advance, but it is well worth it. We had a bunch of regulars attending with us, so we knew it was going to be a great time. The owner, who instructs the class, is very kind, patient, and generous. He took his time teaching and answering questions, provided more than enough supplies, and did everything he could to ensure we had a wonderful experience. We started with a cocktail and fresh focaccia bread. The marinara sauce with the bread and some other dishes was the tastiest sauce I’ve ever had. There was a self serve station for water and wine throughout the class. We made a fried risotto appetizer, pizza, spinach and cheese ravioli, and gnocchi. The owner and his staff gave one-on-one instruction when needed, and were very nice and helpful. We gave the staff everything we had prepared to be cooked in the kitchen. Our dishes were returned hot and ready for a delicious meal. There was so much food we were provided with to go containers and had it for several meals afterwards. We were also treated to limoncello gelato and limoncello shots at the very end of the class. This class was so fun and informative, and the atmosphere was relaxed. The quality ingredients, experience, drinks, and food were well worth the price. Highly recommend!

Love the communal eatery marketplace Toscana provides. Several vendors to choose your desired cuisine. Big fan of the bar being there and upstairs is fun to people watch from. Recommend!

Yelp
Toscana Market, located in La Cosecha at The Square, offerings sandwiches, pastas, and cooking classes. We tried some of their sandwiches on focaccia bread and their pastas to share. The place was bustling, but the staff were friendly and were readily available to assist. The space is bright and fun to just peruse; we were interested in signing up for their classes in the future as get-togethers. +sandwiches +pastas +cooking classes offered +friendly staff & service +located at The Square
