Where to Get Ramen in New York City - Eater NY

"Founded in 2010, this intimate noodle parlor in western Hell’s Kitchen, with additional locations in Midtown, Boston, and Taipei, takes ramen back to its Chinese roots, with a chicken-pork broth, wavy blond noodles, a hot-as-hell condiment called extreme rayu to be used sparingly, and a potential side of avocado. If there’s a line when you arrive, put your name down on the list by the front door." - Robert Sietsema

Best ramen in town!!!! I left the place stuffed! Ate there at 5pm and was still so full after the walk & trip home- i didn’t need to have dinner! Servers are very corteous and helpful. Clean toilet! What else can you ask for? Oh. Maybe more of those pork buns- yes, yes, yes!!! Heard the line here in the winter time goes right down the block- sorry, they dont take reservations. There’s a reason they have lines people- everything is soooooo good!

Google
Definitely solid 4 out of 5. Ramen itself very full of flavor, noodles were just the way I like it , perfect thickness , however chicken breast in the ramen was very dry and chewy. Also pulled chicken in the bun was also not the best one. Dark chicken meat is better for buns, more flavor and juice. Over all good spot, but not the greatest.

One of the best ramen places in the City! I’ve been here countless times and it’s always amazing. The appetizers are great too. Cute restaurant and very helpful staff. The food is a great value for the money. Definitely recommend!

Google
Flavorful broth with incredibly fresh vegetables. I ordered the spicy vegetable ramen with a soft boiled egg. Lots of perfect broccoli, Napa cabbage, avocado, bean sprouts, scallions, red and yellow peppers, mushrooms, and onions. The noodles were cooked just right, and everything was really tasty and super-fresh. The spice level was just right. (I wasn't a fan of the pop soundtrack, but at least it wasn't too loud.)

Google
The ramen was pretty good here! Less broth than most places, the egg was a little overcooked for my liking, but the seaweed was a nice additional texture. Very quick service and a small and cute place.

Tourist BEWARE! Service: Don’t know what to say…but long story short, everything was fine until we pay. The staff literally decided our tips for us and asked us pay. Very offended. Food: The broth is a thicker paitan instead of the traditional light ones. Overall taste is really good if you like tons of scallions. I added a flavored egg; the flavor is nice but a bit too salty. Ambiance: small and casual.

Google
We ordered the chicken ramen and the spicy chicken ramen. It was very delicious! I got to practice a little Japanese with one of the staff. We arrived a few minutes before 5pm on a Thursday night and there was no wait. We had the whole restaurant to ourselves.

Google
A quiet and relaxing restaurant with a unique theme/design. On one side, you see a typical Japanese izakaya design. On the other, you see a run-of-the-mill Chinese tile back alley design. The services are fast and the waitress is polite. The food is a bit of both good and bad. The curry ramen's broth did not really blend with the curry powder well, making a weird blend. On the other hand, the Firebird Ramen was superb. Spicy, but not overwhelming and maintaining it's flavor. The char siu bao are delicious, although I find it crazy that only one bao is $5. The fried chicken is also good, although it may be too salty for some patron.

Yelp
Yummy ramen, great service in the heart of Hell's Kitchen. I tried the totto paitan with pork and added egg. The broth here is one of the best broths I've ever had which is truly how I like to enjoy ramen. The spicy option also looked really good. Came in during lunch on a Saturday which didn't have a wait. Glad I found this gem and will definitely be back.

Yelp
Came in on a Friday afternoon around 2. They close at 230 and then reopen at 5 Food 5/5: ordered their signature ramen and some takoyaki, both were delicious, takoyaki were piping hot in the middle as they should be, be careful. Ambiance 4/5: clean modern feel to a ramen shop, comfortable but nothing special Service 4.5/5: quick, friendly and helpful but a bit slow in filling waters Value 4/5: pretty good value for NYC with 17$ for a bowl of quality ramen. Overall 4.4/5: overall good experience, good food at decent value, would come again if in the area but not sure if it's worth heading over just for this.

Yelp
Came here for a quick lunch instead of picking up lunch and eating it at my desk. I remember Totto Ramen was amazing pre-covid and never disappointed. This is my first time coming back in years. I got the Spicy Miso Paitan which came with wavy noodles, pork char-siu, scallions, bean sprouts and onions. They didn't have boiled eggs (which is very surprising for a ramen shop) so they gave me an extra pork char-siu. The ramen was lacking in flavor and the char-siu didn't taste fresh. I remember the ramen being extraordinary with each slurp hitting the spot before. Guess this was a time in the past.
google avatar

Veronica L.

Yelp
The ramen is standard and just okay. The texture of the noodles was great and the bowl comes with a lot of the standard toppings, but I found the broth to be a bit on the blander side. We also ordered the Fried Chicken Nanban for our apps, which came with egg salad. Aside from the few pieces of egg shells, the dish tasted pretty good otherwise! I had a great experience pre-covid, when the place was better, so I wanted to revisit it. Maybe we went on a bad day, but the ramen wasn't as tasty as I remembered. 6.5/10 - I'd opt for a different ramen spot in the area!

Yelp
Totto was a friend rec and didn't disappoint! Felt super cozy with it being the local neighborhood ramen shop. The show stopper ironically was the Tokyo friend chicken with the chili crunch topping - YUM. For the ramen, the broth was creamy and noodles were chewy with love but meat not so tender. Service was excellent and felt like I was back in asia - 100%.

Yelp
Glad to have stumbled upon this restaurant. Literally parked in front and said let's eat here. Inside dining area with some tables outside. Kept clean and waiters are attentive. Ordered a couple of beers which weren't cold. Started with the Takoyakii (octopus balls). They were not consistent. Some were chewy others were tender. Would try another appetizer next time. Ordered the Original Chicken Paitan, great choice! The broth was just amazing. Tasted like it has been marinating for hours or even days. Such developed deep flavor. I actually took half home and it was still good the next day. Would come back to try other ramen!

Yelp
Let me start with... it was so freaking good! This place was recommended to me by a few of my local friends. On first appearance, it's a small hole in the wall place in Hell's Kitchen. Nothing fancy, to catch your eye, but nonetheless, it came highly recommended, so don't judge a book by its cover. My co worker and I sat near the front door and were greeted promptly by the hostess/ waitress. I got the mega paitan, and it was AMAZING! I typically enjoy tongkotsu at other ramen places, and this was hands down, the best I've had in Florida, California, and NY.
google avatar

Ken H.

Yelp
The service is definitely the most standout part of this restaurant. I was referred by my friend with a high remark of their ramen broth but I can't said I was all that impressed. The broth was lighter than I expected and the noodles were cooked to the right firmness. Gyoza were those frozen fryer style ones, I was underwhelmed. It feels more like your typical supermarket foodcourt style ramen, no need to come all the way for it.
google avatar

Yelp
I ordered from this place, I can't speak for service or Ambiance. Ramen is really good, Char Siu Porkbelly Bao was delicious. Everything was hot and yummy upon delivery.

Yelp
Very satisfying bowl of chicken ramen. Noodles and toppings were all good. Well packaged for take out and ready pretty quickly. Staff is friendly. Shop is wheelchair accessible, but sadly no outdoor dining.
google avatar

Krystal L.

Yelp
This would literally be the PERFECT bowl of chicken-based ramen if it didn't have raw onions. There was no wait on a Saturday night at 7:30pm. Small and modest interior. Sit at the bar, it will really complete your experience. Ordered the original chicken and I'm so glad I did. The broth was amazing. I didn't think it was possible to get chicken broth this thick and tasty, but Totto somehow did it. My only complaint is the raw onion...it completely overwhelmed the dish. Each bite felt like a spoonful of onions. Finely sliced scallions would suit this so much better.

Yelp
Decent ramen spot with a classic vibe. I ordered the Original Chicken Paitan Ramen ($16). The chicken was a bit dry and there was only one piece of seaweed and one small half egg. The noodles and broth were pretty standard but good. There were some additional veggies in there too that were standard. I thought this was fair pricing and value. The service speed was super fast, and our waitress was friendly and attentive. The place inside is decently sized with some authentic Japanese caves and also some colorful artwork along the walls. There was a comfortable noise level and a few empty tables on a Friday night. Overall, Totto Ramen is a classic ramen spot. The ramen isn't anything special, but if you are just looking for quick, no-frills ramen, then this is a pretty good place to visit.

Yelp
Went here for an early dinner on a whim and really enjoyed the chicken based broth. I'm usually a pork-based fan but this was really rich and flavorful. It wasn't very busy on a Thursday evening and we were seated immediately. The staff is very friendly and the space itself is cute and cozy as well.

Vicki W.

Yelp
Needed something quick and filling. Stumbled upon this ramen shop, which specializes in a chicken paitan soup. I really enjoyed the different flavors of the broth. I got spicy which wasn't really that spicy. The egg was a bit overcooked for me. Overall if you're in a pinch, the customer service was quick and fast.
google avatar

Alice Z.

Yelp
My group of 3 walked up on a Friday night and were seated within 5 minutes, which was nice because it looked like the place was busy. This restaurant is more of a place to eat and go rather than sit and talk for hours. There are not too many choices on the menu, so choosing was rather easy. For such a cheap price ($14), I got a bowl of the chicken paitan ramen with pork. The pork was really tender and melt in your mouth. The amount of toppings was definitely a plus as you would have had to pay a decent amount more for add-ins. The noodles were perfectly cooked, and the broth was decent. Do be aware that if you are to drink the broth, avoid the bottom as whatever was used to flavor the broth settles. While this was not the best ramen I have ever had, there is no denying that the price point, quick meal, and fast service is a quick draw to the restaurant, especially for a busy night.

Yelp
First time to try this branch... Bigger space, lots of seating on week day & no wait time at the time of our visit. Nephew got the takoyaki- dumpling ball with bits of octopus inside. Came out very hot & he liked it. For the ramen we all ordered spicy paitan ramen. It was good amount of heat, the noodles was okey. They didn't skimp on the pork but i find the soup very thick. I wish they char the pork belly cause it would add a lot of depth in the flavor. Service was fast and attentive. Only turn off is the waitress kept talking loud how much a customer tipped as soon as they leave. I think such conversations should be kept private among themselves with no customers within hearing distance. Not a very bad experience but i think i'll go to the other much smaller location for my next Totto ramen cravings
google avatar

Susan K.

Yelp
We only tried the appetizers, takoyaki, fried chicken, pork buns. They were okay, nothing outstanding. These could have been better as in instead of iceberg lettuce, a different type of vegetable could've been used. Some people use sweet buns, these didn't have anything special about them. The pork had the sweet taste. These are really considered street food in Asia.
google avatar

Thuy H.

Yelp
I've never tried chicken based ramen before and this surprisingly didn't disappoint! I've always loved the richness of the pork broth so pleasantly surprised when this broth had a similar type of richness. The noodles were really good as well and after eating I didn't feel super bloated and heavy which is a plus! I also tried the karaage and the karaage with egg which was interesting - the egg actually complimented the chicken pretty well and was super rich. Overall, this is a good place on cold days where you'd want a hug in the form of a bowl!
google avatar

Yelp
I feel like every day another ramen shop opens in NYC - however even after all these years, Totto still remains one of my favorites. This is old reliable for me. Comfort food at its finest. The chicken paitan is some of the best chicken based broth I've had. Noodle texture is perfect. Service is friendly, and food comes out fast. This used to be a destination ramen spot back in the day - although Totto often now gets overlooked and not talked about much with the influx of newcomers, it has never stopped pumping out one of the best ramen bowls in the city.
google avatar

Milo C.

Yelp
I came here for ramen thinking there was going to be a good variety. All of the broths were pretty much the same, and the fixings were pretty standard. I liked that the broth was a little more dense but other than that, there really wasn't too much to it. It was hot inside and it's kinda tight. The waiter was very nice!
google avatar

Dan D.

Yelp
As the most casual of the ramen restaurant heavyweights in Manhattan, Totto continues to be a very solid choice. If you are like my most recent dining companions, you'll do no wrong by making Totto your introduction to this food niche. But you'll also get an objectively better and surprising ramen experience at Ippudo, which is just down the street but features a far longer wait. I'm very glad that Totto survived the shutdown. They now accept credit cards and continue to serve fatty, beyond-rich chicken broth that is very satisfying, but short of sublime. I went with the miso paitan at my last visit and found myself wishing I had mixed it better, because the unmixed miso paste is quite strong. Noodles are perfectly al dente and service quick as can be. Since it's near the Theater District and still manages to be no-wait, it remains front of mind for trips into the city. But it's definitely a highly casual establishment - if you want to sit down and be pampered and see a menu with a point of view, seek another eatery. I spent $27 after tax and tip for just myself.

Yelp
Came here around 7p and it was pretty packed. Ended up sitting on the stool with my partner and was seated quickly. Service here was very good, literally got my food within 10 min of ordering. Chef checked up on us and asked how was the food. For me, I had their most popular dish the spicy mega Paitan. It was really good, the pork was very tasty but would have liked it to be spicer. It also came warm where you can eat it immediately which I think is great for some people but I prefer it warmer. My partner had the spicy chicken Paitan and he thought it was delicious. Definitely would come back again!!!

Yelp
Totto Ramen for the win!! My husband and I had been wanting to try Totto Ramen for quite some time and I am super glad we did. This place offers so many vegetarian options and you can also create your own ramen. The service is super fast and friendly. I created my own ramen with wavy noodles which simply hit the spot! My husband had a spicy ramen bowl, however, I can't remember the name but, he did state that the broth was full of flavor and the dumplings really made the dish. I am so excited to try Totto Ramen again in the very near future. Thanks for a wonderful experience.
google avatar

Audrey W.

Yelp
The ramen here was adequate -- nothing special, nothing terrible either. But I think what makes this a 3-star dining experience were the gyoza, which certainly came out of a bag and were pretty awful. I had the spicy chicken paitan -- noodles were okay, broth was fine, chicken was flavorless. Husband had the miso paitan -- same review: noodles were okay, broth was meh, pork was fine. I wanted to like this place more, as it's nearby. But I think we'll walk just a little bit farther for some better options.

Yelp
Food 5/5 Staff 5/5 Location 4/5 Wait 4/5 Space 3/5 Price 5/5 Ramen is something we have always been very picky about, and this was one of the few ramen places we really liked. The broth was rich and hearty, the noodles had a great bite and were really flavorful, and the vegetables were well picked. They were very accommodating with vegetarian broth and were in general very friendly. The only two things that were so-so was the wait and the space. The wait was about 30 minutes which is doable but you need to wait outside considering how much space they have. Once you are inside the space table to table is pretty packed and since it is a popular place, it is usually stuffed with people. Overall a great ramen place you should check out.
google avatar

Avalon W.

Yelp
Bland ramen and bad service. Ordered the Spicy Mega Paitan and the Spicy Vegetable Paitan and both had very light and bland broth (almost to the point where it was tasteless). Service was also pretty bad -- it took a while to order, we didn't get our waters refilled until they gave us the check, and one of the servers was rude.

Yelp
Totto Ramen is a cozy and popular Japanese restaurant located in Hell's Kitchen, New York City. As soon as you step inside, you'll feel the warmth of the place, and the delicious aroma of their signature dish, the ramen, will greet you. It's a small restaurant, so it can get quite crowded during peak hours, but the waiting time is usually worth it. The ramen at Totto Ramen is undoubtedly the star of the menu. The broth is rich and flavorful, and the noodles are perfectly cooked to give just the right amount of chewiness. They offer several varieties of ramen, including spicy ramen, chicken paitan ramen, and vegetarian ramen. You can customize your bowl by adding extra toppings like char siu pork, egg, and bamboo shoots. Apart from the delicious food, the service at Totto Ramen is exceptional. The staff is friendly and attentive, and they make sure that your experience is a memorable one. It's noteworthy that they used to only take cash, but hopefully, they've expanded their payment options by now. In terms of the ambiance, Totto Ramen has a cozy and intimate atmosphere. The decor is simple yet charming, and it complements the overall experience of enjoying a hearty bowl of ramen. Overall, Totto Ramen is a must-visit for any ramen lover in New York City. The exceptional food, excellent service, and cozy ambiance make it an unforgettable dining experience. And if you're not in New York, let's hope that they will open a branch in California soon.

Yelp
Like the house special, a soup with noodles, veggies, etc. Crowded, unfancy place. Okay service.

Yelp
I haven't been in the city for ramen since pre-COVID but came here recently and was really looking forward to it as the weather is getting colder. Totto Ramen always has a wait every time I come here (just remember to put your name down on the list inside at the entrance). Luckily, it was just my friend and I last Friday night and it only took approximately 30 minutes to get a seat (we also opt to sit at the bar which helped reduce the time). It was my friend's first time eating real ramen - he does not eat pork so he ordered the Firebird Paitan and absolutely loved it. Its really great to see that Totto has many options (some ramen joints just have a pork option). I ordered the Mega Paitan and to be honest, it was not as good as I remembered but it still hits the spot. The ramen wasn't as hot as I typically liked it, but it was still very tasty. The restaurant was also super busy but we got our food pretty quickly. We also got the fried chicken and it was alright. Prices are very reasonable and staff is very attentive.

Yelp

Yelp
Totto Ramen is our number one ramen in the entire NYC. And we've tried Ippudo and Ichiran. We used to go to the other branches but yesterday we were closest to this location so we went here for the first time. Turned out to be a fantastic decision. This branch looks newer and cleaner. Door was closed and AC running properly especially during a heat wave. Sandra was our server and immediately greeted us. Really nice and great energy. Allowed us to choose our table, got us cold water and got our orders right away. Thanks Sandra! As for food, we only ate a light breakfast so this was going to be both lunch and dinner. Mega Paitan it is! Honestly I've been so used to beef or pork broth all my life and never thought at first that chicken broth would work but it has really won me over. It's really the delicious garlicky broth that keeps us coming back. And the wavy noodles too, perfect texture. We've also noticed that this branch is more generous than others with the meat so bonus points for that. We really appreciate it. Awesome job, hit the spot, and can't wait to come back again soon! Thanks guys!

Yelp
We dropped by with a big group and had to wait to be seated. The restaurant is pretty small so I wouldn't recommend it for big groups. The employees were all very accommodating and attentive once we were seated though. I ordered the chicken paitan ramen while my cousins got the spicy chicken paitan. I thought it was pretty good and slurped it all down. My son got the chicken karage which were perfectly crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside. I also got a side order of the spicy gyoza, which was equally delicious! Definitely stop by if you're in the area!
google avatar

Alex Z.

Yelp
Hell's Kitchen is one of the neighborhood you can find really good ramen. TOTTO stood out for their famous chicken pitan. The soup is very thick and flavorful; loaded with collagen. I recommend the good old classic chicken pitan will do the work you can simple just enjoy the soup and noodle. There's not a lot of toppings from any of their menu but you can add extras. Or try their mega bowl it comes in a larger bowl with more toppings. Service is fast, staffs are friendly. space is big and airy.
google avatar

Mike Z.

Yelp
I have been a fan of Totto ramen for years, especially of the location in midtown east. Happened to be in the neighborhood of this location and my sister was in the mood for ramen so we stopped by; luckily, there was no wait at prime dinner time as we took one of the last tables. We shared the takoyaki and I ordered the spicy mega paitan. Takoyaki was delicious and piping hot as if came out, very satisfying. The ramen I had was great too, but I had some issues with the topings as the meats were a bit dry. This hasn't been an issue for me at Totto in the past, so a bit dissapointing. One other critique is that the tables were way too cramped; we were very clearly hearing every conversation around us!

Yelp
tl;dr each element of these chicken-centric ramen bowls is a resounding hit, offering an enjoyable alternative to classic tonkotsu joints Totto, already a well-established entity in NYC operating their second-story Midtown yakitori bar, entered the ramen scene in 2010 and quickly proceed to carve a niche for themselves with a signature milky-white, chicken-based tori paitan dashi. Now, Totto Ramen hosts multiple locations in New York, Boston, and Taiwan. Totto opts for a decidedly casual atmosphere: the Hell's Kitchen outpost sports unadorned light wooden furnishings, faux granite floors, and colorful abstract artwork decorating the walls. Commercial radio plays contemporary pop and rap. My partner and I arrived for pre-theater weekend dinner and immediately were seated at one of the many open tables -- that being said, we watched the crowd progressively pick up throughout our meal. We opted for 2 bowls: the Mega Paitan and the Firebird Paitan. Both were prepared within minutes and served in medium-large crimson bowls. The Mega bowl's creamy yet light broth, was less overwhelmingly rich and salty than traditional tonkotsu, topped with a heavy serving of chopped white onion. Generous chunks of tender and tasty chashu, prepared 3 different ways, floated alongside a classically thick, wavy al dente noodles and a chopped half-egg. Meanwhile, the Firebird's broth featured kelp and mushroom flavors. The vibrant scarlet swirl was mildly spicy, but the dashi maintained the same light, creamy consistency. Multiple large chunks of fried dark meat chicken floated in the bowl with linguini-thin noodles. We made a point to quickly devour the chicken while it maintained an enjoyably crisp skin. Service was friendly and efficient without ever feeling rushed. Our bill ran us $50 (after tax and tip): no chump change, but certainly less expensive than Ippudo right down the block. Even as a die-hard tonkotsu proponent, I found the paitan dashi to be a sleeper hit. For a fast, casual, and (most importantly) tasty ramen option near the Theater District, Totto should definitely make your shortlist.

Yelp
There is an intimate dining area in the back of the restaurant. We ordered the Takoyaki (octopus) and Cucumber Asazuke. The octopus had two small pieces inside a heavily battered exterior. The sauce was too overpowering for me but the breading was delicious! The cucumber salad had a nice crunch and was tasty and refreshing. I ordered the spicy miso paltan. I wasn't super impressed. The pork pieces were small and dry. The broth was not too spicy and the broth was savory but just not the best I've had. The service was attentive and the food was serviced at the right pace.

Yelp
Cockroach ran across my table. $69 dollars for one person. They don't care. Never going back again unless they charge for bugs!!!! Ick!
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
Sososo good. The perfect weekeend lunch meal. I ordered the Chicken Paitan and it was incredible. I subbed out the chicken for pork which I highly recommend because the pork was to die for. The edges are charred for that smoky flavor which complements the broth so well Highly recommend
google avatar

Anna Grace N.

Yelp
I was suspicious of chicken based ramen being this good but I was proven WRONG! This place is the bee's knees! The broth had a rich chicken flavor and the miso mixed in was the cherry on top. We were loyal Ippudo fans but this place has more affordable prices and is less hectic so now we switch off between the two. I was lured in by the mise app offer and we had their make-home kit and decided the restaurant deserved a visit. The service was speedy and attentive, just the way we like it in NYC. The vibe was very NYC causal ramen bar. We'll be coming back for sure!

Yelp
I used to like this place . they changed their menu - specifically the texture of the noodles is different, and all toppings are extra now .
google avatar

Jason L.

Yelp
At this location, tried the bestselling ramen. The spicy mega paitan was tasty. Not too oily and salty. The pork belly was fragile. Easily feel the flavour on the tongue. Noodles were firm and smooth, felt fully cooked. Soup has little spicy taste. Feel more appetite from the texture. Would go back again for more ramen.

Masumi T.

Yelp
I came at an off hour (3pm) on a Friday so I was able to sit immediately. I ordered the spicy miso ramen thinking the plain might be bland. When I asked how spicy it is, he offered to put it on the side. The ramen came quickly. I tried the soup without mixing in the miso and it was flavorful and delicious. I didn't need the miso but mixed a little in along with the oil. Noodles paired great with the scallions and bean sprouts for a mix of texture. I put a little bit of miso on the pork which was delicious together. I will probably come back soon and try the spicy chicken. They accept credit cards now.

Yelp
This is my third time coming to this restaurant an hour before closing and each time they are closed. Their website says they close at 9:30 so I decided to get here by 8:15 today and they are closed..

Yelp
Totto ramen is my favorite ramen shop in New York. It has moved from the original 52 location a few years back and is now their main location. They have chicken broth that they cook for hours and which is very tasty and allows people who don't eat pork an option for ramen. They also have vegetarian ramen. My favorite ramen is spicy chicken paitan. The beer is good too especially on a Sunday lunch after a later Saturday night out.
