"East Passyunk’s Townsend is dark, romantic, and has more candles than the set of a vampire movie. The first-floor bar is always popping, but it's the upstairs dining room that works especially well for a swanky date night (and they’ll even customize special occasion menus for you). From roasted striped bass served with a creamy potato pavé to tender pork belly, the menu here is what you might expect from a nice French-ish spot." - candis mclean, alison kessler
"East Passyunk’s Townsend is full of candlelight, white tablecloths, and the general feeling that someone might propose at any minute. The a la carte menu includes takes on French food, like roasted bone marrow with a crisp celery salad, escargot with buttery garlic risotto, and a perfectly cooked cote d’boeuf for two. Despite the formal dining room and excellent service, it’s totally laid back, making it one of our favorite spots for a special occasion. Bonus: the bar closes at 2am, so it’s a great place to seek out after dinner, or the three times a year you stay out past 1am." - alison kessler
"East Passyunk’s Townsend is dark, romantic, and has more candles than the set of Charmed. There’s an upstairs dining room that works well for a nice date night (they’ll even customize special occasion menus for you). From roasted striped bass served with a creamy potato pave to tender pork belly, the menu here is what you might expect from a nice French-ish spot. There’s also a bar downstairs that’s open until 2am." - alison kessler, candis mclean
"East Passyunk’s Townsend is as comfortable as wearing your favorite sweater. The place is dark and intimate, there’s a vintage fireplace, and it has more candles than a love scene in Bridgerton. It’s also one of the best French restaurants in Philadelphia, so beyond the feel-good factor, you can expect incredible drinks and food. Pass around plates of crispy broiled oysters, potato gnocchi, and ribeye coated in a red wine jus on a comfortable date night—setting the right mood is 90% of the battle, anyway." - candis mclean
"East Passyunk’s Townsend has all the elements of a typical fancy restaurant: white tablecloths, fancy cocktails, and more mood lighting than a rose ceremony on The Bachelor. But where the romantic French spot sets itself apart is with the impeccable five-course, $85 tasting menu. From a foie gras custard with toasted brioche to the escargot in a sweet potato, apple, and hazelnut chai cream, each dish is a surprising mix of flavors and textures that seamlessly works. Grab a reservation when you want a five-star dining experience and unforgettable food, all while comfortably dining in a t-shirt and jeans." - alison kessler, candis mclean
