The 15 Best Caribbean Restaurants In LA

"Tracey’s is our go-to Belizean spot when we’re in the mood for tender oxtails. It’s a small space on Western Avenue a few blocks west of USC, where the guy working behind the counter greets every customer like they're a regular. We usually order a half-and-half plate with stewed beef and rich braised oxtail, which ensures a maximum amount of meaty gravy to spread over the accompanying rice and beans. Ignore the hours listed online—Tracey’s is the kind of place that closes up after they sell out (which can happen as early as 4pm on Sundays). So be sure to call ahead and ask what they have available before making the journey." - brant cox, garrett snyder, sylvio martins

19 Incredible Places to Eat Central American Food in Los Angeles | Eater LA

"For almost 40 years, Barbara Tracey’s homey cooking has been an anchor in the Belizean community in Los Angeles, with some of the creamiest bollos (Belizean tamales) in town, as well as crispy garnaches (refried bean and cheese tostadas) and hearty Kriol food. Order the braised oxtail, stewed in a gravy and then reddened by recado — an annatto seed condiment. It’s sided with rice and beans, fried plantain, and a cool, chunky potato salad. On Saturdays, grab a boil up, a plate of boiled tubers, pig tail, eggs, and fish covered in tomato sauce. It’s a Belizean party on a plate." - Bill Esparza

Google
Great home cooked style Belizean food. Not in the greatest corner of LA but they have Great service. The people running the place are class acts. They are very hospitable and greet you with a smile and appreciation. The Stew Chicken was great. The Stew beans were the best. The plantains were made perfectly. Would definitely come back and definitely recommend it.

Google
got the stewed chicken and it was delicious, well seasoned and the portion was big. will definitely be coming back to get the oxtail next time, i came at like 2pm on a Monday and they were already sold out 😭 but that's how you know the food is good!! the guys who work here are really friendly and quick, this spot is a gem

Google
Food was not hot. Enjoyed the rice & peas more than anything. Oxtails need major improvement, from the flavor to the quality, I was basically given a plate of bones with very little to no meat. All the tiny oxtails maybe added up in total to ONE nice sized oxtail. Food is over priced. I almost spent $60 on two overpriced plates, so I got one instead. I’ll make my own at home, so I can get the more my money. Plus mines taste way better. Oh and not to mention, the gravy from my oxtails mixed with my potato salad, my plate was very sloppy, this disappointed me too. And the customer service sucks, very arrogant behavior, no hello or anything. Just “what would you like to order” and bragging about being in business for 46 years, so don’t come here expecting a nice vibe with your food, you might loose your appetite like I did, that’s why I only bought 1 plate too. The place isn’t the cleanest.

Tremendous Tristan!

Google
I would highly recommend! This is a hidden gem in the heart of Los Angeles South Central. For cultural RICH tasting food, do not hesitate! It’s worth the drive, worth the wait definitely worth a taste! BELIZE 🇧🇿❤️🇧🇿❤️🇧🇿🕊️ Breakfast 9-11am daily. Call for more info.

Yelp
I should've written this sooner. I had Tracey's for the first time about two months ago and it was very delicious. I had the stewed chicken with the rice and peas and potato salad. Now, Joan and Sisters is right down the street so let me say how they compare. Chicken itself, I will give to Joan and Sisters. Peas and rice and potato salad goes to Tracey's. Tracey's has far nicer customer service. Staff is friendly and they treat you like you like a long lost friends...but they don't take phone orders. Bummer. Joan and Sisters does take phone orders BUT your order still may not be ready when you get there even if you walk in at the estimated time. Joan and Sisters is far more generous with the onion sauce which takes the meal over the top. Tracey's was quite stingy with it. I ordered four meals and they gave me ONE SINGLE FOIL PACKET of the onion. Parking sucks at both locations!

Yelp
Pretty good overall. Just so much rice and beans. Wish it was a bit more oxtail meat. The meat was very fatty. The potato salad was pretty good. The price was about $16 which is cheaper compared to other restaurants that sell oxtail. Kind and personal service. Small restaurant and seating available but most people just took their food to go. Very simple establishment.

Yelp
Hubby craving his comfort food. We stopped by for breakfast. Breakfast was good. Enjoyed the flap jacks. The service was great.

Yelp
The food here was absolutely amazing! I heard about it through one of the Youtubers, he went to a different location first and found out he went to the wrong place. The crazy thing is I pass by Tracy's all the time and I wanted to go in just had never gone. I was happy and pleasantly surprised the food is delicious.

Yelp
We went early Monday morning. It was a holiday, they weren't very busy when we came in. Had the chicken breakfast and the food was so good. The bread don't know what it's called but it was the perfect complement to the beans
google avatar

Ken D.

Yelp
Great place for lunch I eat here when ever I am in the area.staff is friendly and service is fast.

Yelp
I'm Belizean and I don't have a bunch of options in the city. Customer servicer is whack but the food is good.
google avatar

Latoya E.

Yelp
Friendly, authentic and a flavorful meal. We ordered 2 oxtail platters and 2 stew chicken platters. The potato salad is delicious!! Definitely my favorite item! I wish the plantains were cooked a bit more. They offer beer, sodas, and an assortment of Caribbean drinks! The gentlemen who were working were very friendly, patient and really made our visit a good experience. My husband's grandmother said this was one of her favorite places for authentic Belizean cuisine, as she is from Belize. The food had no spice which is nice for those that don't crave it, I do wish I had a little kick to my stew chicken.
google avatar

Keyonda A.

Yelp
When I stated in my last review that I was going to return the next day. I did!! My hubby is Belizean so I decided to bring him. Turns out he knew the family of those working there. Pharaoh and Mike are the brothers that offer customers that awesome service. Tracy and Rocks are the ones that deliver the taste!!! Food is addicting. I love the fact that an ATM is provided inside although they accept credit card and debit forms of payment. One review stated that it can get hot inside but they have a gigantic fan inside that can keep you cool. They keep it smelling good on the inside as usual.

Yelp
Ox tails. Stew chicken. Tracey's is a winner. I'm not Belizean, but when I've got that slightly sweet potato salad on my fork... who's to say? I get stew beans and rice. With the plantains, dinner is always perfectly scrumptious. The sauce on the chicken is crazy. What is that? There's never enough of it. Can't ever be. Go to Tracey's. Bless your life. I'm not Belizean, so I order simple. The menu has a lot of back/home goodies. Go there early... they may run out of favorites. But if you get lucky.,, you're effing lucky. Trust me, it's awesome.

Yelp
I can eat this breakfast lunch nd dinner always a hit with me the fried fish is the best thing on the menu if u can afford it at 38 $ enough for 2 servings

Yelp
I saw the post from LAtryguy, he said the food was Certified! I decided to give them a try, I wasn't blown away I got the Oxtails plate and Stewed beef plate. the Oxtails were just okay not falling off the bone. Potato salad was unique and delicious platens were good rice was okay. The beef stew meat wasn't tender at all. The flavor was missing that vavavoom punch.

Renea F.

Yelp
i was introduced to Tracy's years ago and it was authentic. I had craving today and when I tell you it has not changed. Best place in Los Angeles!

Yelp
Tracey's is on Western just south of Exposition is a nondescript joint with a knack for creating delicious Belizean cuisine. Everyone is really friendly and eager to explain the food here. Unfortunately, the dining room isn't open yet, and the aromas on the drive home make you want to pull over and dive in. Stew Chicken: The dark meat chicken is slowly cooked in a brown stew of spices, including annatto seed, allspice, cinnamon, and clove. The spices provide a deep peppery flavor. A Creole meal isn't complete without beans, rice, and potato salad. The stew beans are cooked until the big red kidney beans have an almost mashed consistency and are a bit peppery. The white rice is a bit al dente, which is a nice textural contrast to the soft beans. The potato salad is packed with flavor consisting of baby potatoes, carrots, vinegar, mayo, and black pepper. There are also a couple of plantains. The extra stew gravy overflows into the beans and rice, boosting flavor wherever it flows. Parking: You need to turn off the main streets and park in the neighborhood. Dining Area: The tables are currently closed off, but I was told that they may reopen this weekend.

Shacoya L.

Yelp
Service was cool Food bland Nothing special I ordered the suggested stewed chicken on the menu, he returns with this non-sense, I can't see how they are still open, maybe back in the days it was the spot

Yelp
The last time I had Belizean food was in Belize 5 years ago - so I've been trying to find a restaurant with a similar flavor since. My friend and I decided to give this place a try and what a wonderful surprise! We got the stewed oxtail and beef. Oxtail was perfect, so tender and flavorful. I think the beef was a bit rougher for my liking but flavors were still good. I will say this place has one of the BEST potato salads on the market. Staff is super friendly and helpful. I'd recommend taking to-go, as it can get a bit hot/stuffy if you're eating in store during the warmer months. Will definitely be back! Oxtail Plate Stew Beef (Update: I've had a few similar spots, and I wanted to update my review to 5 stars, this place is definitely my top spot for oxtail!!)
google avatar

Alisa R.

Yelp
This place has really good food. Absolutely delicious and you get a nice size portion, so you get your money's worth.

Marissa M.

Yelp
Tracey has you covered. If you were looking for a satisfying meal with a home cooked and down to earth presence, you have found it. Do yourself a favor and come see. Pair your meal with a Jamaican ginger beer, and don't come too late or the good stuff will run out!
google avatar

Carla R.

Yelp
I was in LA and decided to try Tracey's for breakfast and it was amazing. The fry jacks were perfect and I loved my Fish and Milo. Will definitely visit again
google avatar

Rahsaan L.

Yelp
Food was okay. I've had far better Jamaican good. Service was so-so but the staff was very very kind.
google avatar

Cheryl J.

Yelp
Been going here since I was a kid. Everything is good my fave is the oxtail. My only issue is that they no longer offer the pepper onion only for the fish
google avatar

Linda B.

Yelp
This is a wonderful Caribbean restaurant. Great food, service and prices! Highly recommend

J L.

Yelp
Tracey's is the best spot for a quick stop to grab delicious Belizean food. Pick up or dine in, the family owned atmosphere is simple and gets right to the point: great food and huge portions. The staff is nice and the food is ready quick. My favorites are beef stew plate (so tender) and chicken tamale. Chicken and oxtails also so tender and good. I like everything on the menu. Highly recommend. Parking is so so but spots open up right in front every few minutes since most people grab and go. Try it!

Taylor G.

Yelp
My GO-TO Spot for a quick One Two Treeeee mek I tell youu! Food is Amazing! Customer service is Amazing! And very Affordable with Vegan and Vegetarian dinner plates.
google avatar

Shantell D.

Yelp
My fave place to eat for some food . Rice beans , stew chicken and potatoe salad with plantains so good omg Parking is not good though It's a in and out restaurant. I always get my to go plate and go lmao
google avatar

Kolani W.

Yelp
Milk cake was tasty but stewed beef and stewed chicken lacked flavor including potatoe salad - added salt but still an epic Fail - if I had ordered the oxtail smh fear the same - please work on the seasonings Chef
google avatar

Krystal K.

Yelp
This has been a spot that I have come to for years one of my friends introduced me to the spot, and I love it. Their food is always fresh and amazing and taste so good if you're ever in LA you must try it.
google avatar

Errolyn E.

Yelp
I got food from Tracy's it was NOT gravy, it was oil. The food is unhealthy and the rice was soaked with the "oil-like gravy". The stew chicken is NOT stewed, it is boiled. Belizean strew is slightly fried first and then stewed down in a gravy. The stew beef was brow brought not semi-frying before stewed. The fried plantains was not fully ripe. The rice and beans is flavorless. It had no herbs in it (thyme). The potato salad had NO onion, NO bell peppers, NO black pepper, NO eggs, NO green peas and NO mustard; just flavorless and looked and tasted nasty. This was the worst item on the plate. NOT edible! Also, there was NO flavor of onion, coconut milk and black pepper. We could Not eat it. $65 in the trash can. Disappointment!

Samuel P.

Yelp
I am new to Belizean food. Enjoyed it and found the staff helpful in explaining menu choices.

Michael C.

Yelp
We came here for the Fry Jack breakfast the morning after landing in LA from Belize. So happy to know there's good Belizean food In California. It's 3 1/2 hours from our home but we visit Southern California on occasion. We'll definitely be back.
google avatar

Florence M.

Yelp
This is my parents spot for authentic Belizean food and I honestly can't argue. The food is delicious I typically have the stew chicken (white meat) but I tried the Oxtails today and got my dad his usual Stew chicken. I love that they have you check the plate before leaving! This a a big thing for me, you can voice your concerns on the spot if you had any I appreciate that. The Oxtails is a must do from now on I loved it just the right amount of seasoning and spice not overly spicy, they could trim the fat a little more but nothing to complain about still delicious. My only complaint would be usually on Sundays there is no desserts left besides Jam rolls and bun lol listen I want bread pudding, tart and meringue pie! Other than that the gentleman that help me has awesome customer service I was quite impressed! Tracey's isn't near me but I try my best to make it as often as I can, it's worth it.
google avatar

Linda A.

Yelp
Tracey's has been around for more than a decade and i have been a customer for 15+ years. Food is always on point.the guys in the front are always so friendly Their breakfast is good as well fry jack cheese and beans are my favorite or fish. Oh wait you gotta try their beef patties so good. I like mine with potato salad that's just my pregnant craving. This is my to go spot. U gotta try em
google avatar

Brianna E.

Yelp
Definitely coming again and would recommend to anyone trying Belizean food for the first time

Tee S.

Yelp
Food was delicious I had the oxtail plate with potato salad , was a little bummed I couldn't get certain things because they only cook them on certain days ! But overall food and service was great ! Will visit again definitely and will recommend

Kahlil D.

Yelp
Anything you order is incredible. Snapper, chicken, oxtail -- their Pattie's are hand made if your lucky enough to get one before they sell out. Stewed beans and potato salad are the best I've ever had. I've raised my kids on Tracey's and it's our family's favorite food-restaurant hands down. I'd give them 10 stars if I could

Joe T.

Yelp
Ox tails Red snapper Fry jacks (morning only) So need to get there early if you want to try them Which I highly recommend Stew beans and rice My favorites
google avatar

Sharlette V.

Yelp
One of the best ways to get to the heart of a culture is through it's cuisine. This is the type of food that literally puts you to sleep after eating it because it's so good and fulfilling. I've tried all the Belizean restaurants in LA and by far this little gem is the best one. So why the 4 Stars? Cons-Customer service is a huge part of making your business thriving. They do not take phone orders, wait what? Yes, it's true. I know that food should be held at 140 degrees but we call because we want to reserve our food, they run out of food after a certain time. I don't mind waiting for my food to cook, I just want to ensure that you have my order. There's no designated parking structure. Parking is available on the street which is always full on the weekends. Pros: I've tried all the Belizean restaurants in LA and by far this little gem is the best one. The food is Authentic Belizean cuisine. It's fully prepared by the owner Tracy herself. She's an awesome Chef. The signature Belizean dish is: Mixed Rice & Beans with Stew Chicken, Potato salad made with Heinz Salad cream and fried ripe plantains. Very delicious. The flavor is in the rice & beans . Tracy's makes it just right. Oxtail w/Rice & Bean cabbage salad & fried plantains very delicious. Well seasoned oxtails every time. Chicken tamales Belizean style delicious as well. Prices are a little steep but, which Caribbean style food isn't. When I'm LA, I always stop by and take their delicious food home for the family.
google avatar

Francine L.

Yelp
I had food catered for my grandson's birthday party and everyone loved the food. I was a big hit and the price was reasonable. Definitely will be my go to for catering again.
google avatar

Shelby S.

Yelp
Writing this while in a food coma so I apologize for any errors This was my second time having Belizean food. The first time was an amazing home cooked meal. Eating here today, I got the same down home/home cooked vibes. I had the chicken meal with rice & beans, potato salad, cabbage, and plantains. Everything was delicious. The potato salad was probably the best I've ever had--not too vinegary, chunky, or sweet & the cabbage was super fresh. The chicken literally fell off the bone and was seasoned well. There's enough juice left over, so you can dip your chicken or soak your rice in it (which, by the way, is really tasty and they give you so much of it). I ate around 11:30-12 and will likely be fully til tomorrow. I still have quite a bit of rice and beans left over that I can't wait to finish.
google avatar

Tamar F.

Yelp
Delicious. Authentic. What more can you ask for? Definitely a favorite spot with locals... But also happy to keep it a small secret. :)
google avatar

Therisa C.

Yelp
I found this hole in the wall in LA and the food was delicious. The portions are huge however the portions of meat are not. I had more rice and beans than anything else. But the food overall is delicious. It is definitely worth the drive to the bad side of town to experience this food.
google avatar

Ara A.

Yelp
Loved the food here. The staff were generous as well and I highly recommend this restaurant!
google avatar

J C.

Yelp
Enjoyed my oxtails entree dish with potatoes salad. Yummy...tried the beef stew from my sister's dish and it was good too. Didn't have a chance to order the chicken because it was not ready and I had an event to attend to....

Jeff M.

Yelp
Great food, warm service, basketball game on screen. Looks like mostly takeout business, but 5-6 cozy booths
google avatar

Victoria R.

Yelp
Tracey's Belizean is a hidden, unassuming gem in south central LA. The food is hot, delicious, fresh-to-order and authentic. All the dishes are incredibly reasonably priced given the quality and portions. Staff is very nice and chill. I HIGHLY recommend the oxtail, mmmmmmmmmmm. Note that it is cash only.
google avatar

Robert T.

Yelp
Food good but they stingy asf with that stew chicken i caught on to what they do they grab a chicken breast and break it all down like its a lot. Nope it dont be. Ever blue and i mean every blue moon u might get a nice hefty plate
