Charleston’s Tradd’s Mixes and Matches for Stunning Interiors - Eater Carolinas

"A gilded mid-century modern wonderland awaits diners who traverse the doorway at Tradd’s — it’s easy to see how the East Bay addition took home the 2018 Eater Award for Design of the Year. Any hints of this East Bay Street building’s former life as fine-dining establishment Cypress were long gone before the opening in October 2018. The bright dining room is refined yet unpretentious, with local art adorning the walls, brass fixtures, a zinc bar, and hints of animal prints. Co-owners Tradd and Weesie Newton drew inspiration from their own interior design. “It has the same palette as our home,” Tradd tells Eater. The Newtons had owned seafood restaurant Fleet Landing for 15 years, and they knew when they moved back to Charleston (from Vail), that they wanted to do a more fine dining concept. They knew they would name it Tradd’s, and when they saw the building on East Bay Street, they knew it was it. Once the space fell into place, the design followed. “We wanted to do something a little different — not your typical Southern, Charleston restaurant,” says Tradd. They thought the space should be welcoming and comfortable with food that didn’t need a lot of explanation. “It feels good to be on East Bay Street,” he adds." - Erin Perkins

What was the Biggest Charleston Dining Surprise of 2018? - Eater Carolinas

"Tradd’s is the best surprise. Very good sign that Charleston does not shares the national obsession for burgers, barbecue, and weirdness but still cherishes restaurants that celebrate our respect for the traditional. As Julia Child once said, it is chicken that exemplifies a restaurant’s standards. Tradd’s chicken is excellence itself, both the quality of the breed and what the chef did with it." - Erin Perkins

Charleston’s Restaurant, Chef, and Design of 2018 - Eater Carolinas

"Any hints of this East Bay Street building’s former life as fine-dining establishment Cypress are long gone after extensive work by local design firm Workstead and Charleston-based Lennon Construction. The bright dining room is refined yet unpretentious, with local art adorning the walls, brass fixtures, a long marble bar, and hints of animal prints. Took a girls' trip to Charleston. We had dinner at Tradd's and were so impressed with the menu! Everything was delicious; the dessert was my personal favorite. :) Would definitely recommend to anyone who is looking for incredible food and a fun, unique atmosphere!

Outstanding service, great ambiance, amazing drinks, appetizers, and salads, mediocre entrees and sides. More fats are needed.

The atmosphere was really beautiful. The staff was very friendly and attentive. We went with another couple. We sat near the Champagne bar and it was very pleasant. It was our first time there and we ask for them to go over the menu with us. We all had excellent appetizers and had four different entrees. We shared both around the table and each got a big thumbs up. The cocktails and wine were very good. This is a quality restaurant that will see us again.

Located at former place of Cypress, this new spot does not stand to the hype. We did enjoy the upscale feel, atmosphere and stylish decor. The front desk service was welcoming too...the food, however, was less than mediocre at best...we ordered veal scallopini and could not even eat more than a few bites, as the dish was greatly over seasoned with salt and pretty much nothing else. Not sure if we were just unlucky this evening, but for the price of dinner entrees. I expected a little more creativity and some culinary delight. With so many great options nearby, I do not see this restaurant remain open too long.

This place is a class act. Very cool atmosphere and decor. Love the leopard print booths. I sat in one for lunch. Very comfy. The menu isn't extensive but what they serve they do well. I had the lump crab and avocado appetizer then the lobster gnocchi. For dessert was the boozy milkshake. All delicious. Service was friendly and prompt. I definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone.

The food was pretty good. I think the price was a little high for how good. But I think you're paying more for atmosphere. Which I get. The place is beautiful . However, the noise level in that place ruins the atmosphere. If it's a full house it will Sound like a high school cafeteria. Especially if there are childlike people dining there. Which could lead to a fight. The service was 5 stars. So was dessert.

Tradd's provided our large family with an absolutely perfect Christmas eve dinner! From fabulous appetizers, delicious and varied entrees, attentive service, and the perfect champagne to celebrate a great year, we enjoyed everything. Plus the perfect nightcap...a boozy milkshake! Thank you for taking such great care of us. We look forward to visiting again soon.

The decor is great, the atmosphere is very enjoyable but not enough to make up for the poor service or food. 4 of us went for a late lunch on a Friday, and it took us just under 2 hours to eat. I will say that the cocktails were enjoyable, and the 30 seconds we had with the bartender, Brittany, (when she brought us our appetizer?) were the most pleasant part of the meal. Upon arrival it took 10ish minutes for our waitress to take our drink orders. We also ordered an appetizer at this time which took us 45 minutes to get, we thought it had been forgotten and we wouldn't get it. Our water glasses were continuously left empty that we had to ask for the bottle to be left at the table. The fava toast was a good appetizer but not near enough for 4 people, it would have been nice to be made aware of this. When we finally got our food orders taken it took over 30 more minutes for our food to arrive. We sat with empty cocktails and water for a majority of this time. The lobster roll was $28 and had more bread than lobster, which is not normal for a lobster roll. The chicken sandwich was very dry and over cooked. The burger was good, it was ordered as medium but it was also very over cooked. The grouper was good and well done but the brussel sprouts and mushrooms were under cooked. The fries were good. We live in Charleston, so we appreciate the wide variety of restaurants available to us and will not come back to this one.
