Traif - Review - Williamsburg - New York - The Infatuation

"Traif is awesome. It's exactly the kind of restaurant we'd love to frequent, and would happily set up shop here permanently if we weren't constantly running around trying new places. Infatuation Nation was in our ear about this one, and, as usual, the good people who email and tweet at us came through with a winner. The name says it all. Traif is a Hebrew word used to describe everything us Jews aren't "supposed" to eat like pig and shellfish, and that's exactly what they creatively celebrate. The restaurant has a great vibe. It's vibrant but low key with excellent music choices (Frightened Rabbit, The Roots), an open kitchen, and a nice sized garden in the back. It's a great option for parties of 6-10 as the menu is meant for sharing, and the spacing at each table is perfect for group conversation. Most importantly, the food is fantastic and the price is right. We are, however, a little concerned. For some reason, Traif isn't getting the love it deserves. It was only half full when we recently stopped by, and a friend of ours who lives next door reports that's generally the story on most nights. It's possible that the location is holding it back, as it's off the beaten path in Williamsburg a bit. Or maybe people just don't know about it yet? Whatever the reason, we need to change that. Get Traif to the top of your Hit List and tell all your friends. Food Rundown Duck Confit Lettuce Wraps One of Traif's signature dishes - this one cannot be missed. It's a make-your-own lettuce wrap with shredded duck confit and banana-tamarind prik, whatever that is. Braised Pork Belly Possibly our favorite thing on the menu. The tender pieces of marmalade-glazed belly are served over a slaw-type salad with avocado, corn, and tomato. Incredible. Sautéed Broccoli Rabe Even Traif's attempts at a healthy dish are seriously gluttonous. This rabe is served with roasted portabella, truffle toast, and a big fat fried egg. So good. Thai Spicy-Sweet Chili Glazed Calamari Yup, it's as tasty as it sounds. Fried calamari with all kinds of extra flair that brings to mind the blue corn meal crusted calamari we love from Yerba Buena Perry. Make sure you order two of these if you're with a big group. It'll go fast. Strawberry-Cinnamon Glazed Baby Back Ribs Traif really knows how to make your mouth water just with the menu descriptions alone. Who in their right mind could possibly come here and NOT order Strawberry-Cinnamon Glazed Ribs? Not us. Definitely order a plate of these. Lamb & Chorizo Meatballs Yep. That happened too. And it was awesome. Fresh Alaskan Spot Prawns with Garlic, Olive Oil, Pimento The one dish we'd advise not to mess around with. These prawns just weren't as good as everything else we sampled. Seared Foie Gras Damn, breakfast for dinner never tasted so good. Seared foie gras is served with fingerling potatoes, ham chips, and a egg sunny side up with maple and hot sauce. Ridiculous. Bacon Doughnuts What better way to end a super healthy dinner than with bacon infused doughnut holes? Obviously, these are awesome." - Andrew Steinthal

NYC Restaurants With New Takeout & Delivery Options

The Cool List: 17 Restaurants That Aren’t “Hot” But Are Definitely Still Cool

"Traif is the Yiddish word for foods traditionally banned under Jewish law: pork, shrimp, etc. This place got some attention for its name when it first opened, but concept aside, the food here is very good. They cook everything behind the bar, and we especially like the the General Tso’s cauliflower and the tuna tartare served on japanese eggplant tempura. This Williamsburg spot never seems to get as busy as it should, which is something you should definitely take advantage of." - bryan kim, hillary reinsberg

On the Grid : Traif

"Hyper-seasonal, pork-focused American eatery in the heart of the Hasidic 'hood of South Williamsburg. Traif in Yiddish refers to non-Kosher food, which helps the "ah, ha" moment whilst browsing the pork and shellfish dominated menu." - Franklyn

"Traif (Yiddish for foods deemed unkosher) encourages eating more than just the standard cuts of meat you likely grew up on. The seasonal menu has featured pork belly, braised short ribs, chopped chicken livers, frog's legs, and even bacon doughnuts. It's a lively, affordable spot and especially enjoyable if you snag seats out in the garden. Traif has participated in the annual Taste Williamsburg Greenpoint event, a block party that showcases delectable northern Brooklyn restaurants like Roberta's and Maison Premiere ."

Traif has been on my list for a while, and I finally made it for their chef’s tasting menu — 10 courses paired with natural wines for a total of $105 (before tax + tip). $58 for the food , $47 for the wine pairing. It was well worth it. The experience was thoughtful from start to finish. Every dish had its own unique flair — from the textures to the flavor pairings. The scallops with porcini risotto and pecan brown butter were buttery and rich without being too heavy. The tuna tartare with tempura eggplant stood out — savory, crispy, and full of umami. Even the fried snapper with bao buns and kimchi was an unexpected twist that just worked. The chicken and mushroom tinga lettuce wraps had bright citrus notes that balanced the richness perfectly. The pork ribs with strawberries were a Wild combo, but somehow it hit. Every dish felt creative but still rooted in comfort. For dessert : bacon donuts (zeppoles) and the key lime pie with five-spice were the kind of bites you slow down for. Sweet, nostalgic, a little playful. The staff here was on point. Friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely into the food and wine they’re serving. The wine pairings (5 total) were all natural wines — we started with white, moved to skin-contact orange, rosé, red, and finished with a dessert wine. Each one made sense with the course, and none felt forced. My only minor critique: A couple of dishes leaned on the sweeter side — depending on your palate, that might not be for everyone. But nothing felt out of balance or overdone. Overall, Traif is an incredible deal for a multi-course tasting with wine in NYC. The vibes are cozy, the food is thoughtful, and it’s clear the kitchen cares about the details. It’s the kind of spot you go to when you want to treat yourself without breaking the bank. Highly recommend doing the tasting menu. And already planning on going back!

I’m mainly taking off points because you guys charged a %20 more for the service and we were only two people, which I heard NY charges that for a party of six? It was an extra $30 that we payed and I think that was just too much in total, I would’ve preferred to choose how much I wanted to pay. We had the chef’s menu for like $56-ish each? The food was mostly very good, especially the tuna tartare was amazing but in general, nothing too remarkable. Ribs with blueberries was tasty, scallop with the rice(i don’t remember if it was a porridge or risotto or what) was okay. Foie gras had lost itself with the egg unfortunately. Deserts were also meh for my taste buds. Cocktails were not good imo. But thanks for the amazing server!

I visited Traif on a very busy Saturday evening shift so your service experience might be very different if you visit on a quiet weekday. We tried the set menu, the pricing is amazing, $58/p for an eight course meal (that’s about $80/p after tax and 20% tip before drinks of course). Some of the dishes were good including the scallop risotto, but others felt like too many different flavors. Ex. The gnocchi with coconut, mushrooms, spices, etc. Also some of the dishes were lukewarm or cold. Ex. The pork. And the presentation was not there. (I might be asking too much for a $58 meal). My biggest issue was with the speed. We felt like we were being rushed as they have to go through 8 courses in less than 2hrs and turn tables. Some courses came before we were done with the previous one. The service level felt more like a diner. In some ways it was like an America tapas place without the relaxed atmosphere. It will help the restaurant to reduce the number of courses to four or five (still charge the same price) so the quality of dishes can improve, severs are not rushing and costumers can slowdown and savor the chef’s vision.

Google
Petra and Sergio are amazing!! The food is unbelievable, the salt and pepper shrimp, scallop risotto, key lime pie, and lettuce wedges are insane. The ambience on the patio, and the service are highlights of this restaurant. We are from Seattle and researched a lot of restaurants before we came and we are so glad we chose this one. The highlight of our trip!!

Google
Great service and vibes. Food however was mediocre. It’s a very affordable pre fixe for a reason… you get 8 entrees and 2 desserts. Each “entree” is a small plate (tapa style) shared between your group… as opposed to each person getting their own small plate despite paying their own $59pp. Loved the rib and scallop. Great panna cotta and doughnut. Most entrees missed. The pasta tasted like out of a box, including the sauce. The fried shrimp was something I could’ve gotten from Panda Express. Most dishes were overly sauced - couldn’t even taste the tartare!

Had the chef's tasting menu dinner with two friends. It was consensus 5 ⭐ for the food afaict. One of the friends, who typically won't visit the same restaurant twice, indicated it was so good they would consider returning. They also added onto their list the sister's restaurant of Traif. My favorite was probably the scallop risotto, closely followed by the caprese salad.

I was hesitant to get the tasting menu at first because I wasn’t too hungry, but I’m so glad I did! Every dish was exciting and different. I’m glad I got to try so many dishes I would’ve have ordered a la carte. The tasting menu (8 dishes with 2 desserts) is the most affordable one if seen in New York. Will definitely be back - even to sit at the bar and get a few small bites. Two chefs and a bartender. So simple yet so great

Excellent chef surprises on the menu for your palate. Book in advance as it gets packed. Be prepared to be surprised. Our waitress Jennifer was also very attentive and courteous. We will come back soon 😁. The desserts were delicious and memorable.

Yelp
TL; DR: Traif has 2.1 K reviews and 3.8 K photos and is pushing five stars on Yelp. My strong recommendation is to get a fun-loving group together and go share their tasting menu. Outstanding. Ok - some expansion: their menu items are adventuresome and taste great. Perhaps someone in your group might not like an item, but someone else definitely will. The service is fast, friendly, and fun. Ambience is Williamsburg hip & cool. Get a group together, make a reservation, and go make a night of it. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
I have been so looking forward to my birthday dinner this year with my closest friends and we chose Traif. This was Oct. 26th Saturday so this was the pre-Halloween weekend so the area was relatively busy. We went for the 5pm slot so that it would be calmer and it was. We were given a nice table at the further back, near the door that leads to the garden. We knew we would all go for the Chef's Tasting menu because of how incredible the deal sounded and it was. It felt a bit hurried in terms of pace to be honest but quality of food is great. Our favorites were the scallop risotto, and glazed ribs. The bacon doughnuts were small but yum. Appreciate that they brought a small dessert for me in a cup with a little candle. Not sure if that counted for what was supposed to be the key lime pie each but we didn't get that so unsure if they forgot, since the other dessert showed as a separate line item on the receipt. Some of my friends were really looking forward to trying it. Everything was all wrapped up by 6:15 so we were just enjoying our 2nd round of drinks. Went to the restroom and I come back to our table being empty to my surprise. My friends told me that they were abruptly asked to already leave for the next seating, this was approaching 6:30. Needless to say, it wasn't really the best way to end a first impression. One of my friends said she actually had to say something diplomatically. Gentle reminder that it's an overall experience, from food to ambiance to service, so hoping the next experience is better if we ever get back as it's an hour drive for us. P.S For those planning to drive, there's no parking spot nearby, you'd have to make sure you bake in plenty of time to find parking in the nearby blocks.

Yelp
I would give this a 3.5 because I wouldn't go back, but am rounding up because it was a nice experience with good food. They have a reasonably priced tasting menu, but I think if you're with a group of 4+, you should order a bunch of things a la carte. Some of their cocktails were nice also. One thing was that where we were seated (near the door to their patio) it was very hot. No ventilation, no fan, and the AC didn't hit that area... it was too hot and I think sort of ruined the otherwise good experience we had. Their portions are also really nice generous, so I think you may end up paying more for less if you do the tasting cause they portion it out for each person on the table, where as most of their dishes have 6 pieces or are big enough to share - Caprese- really good, we were all pleasantly surprised - Shrimp - last thing to come out, was decent -Chicken wings - I really liked the flavor on this, not a fan of the full wing cut - Ribs - didn't come out after all our food so we asked to drop it, the other dishes were plentiful -Cavatelli - I wasn't crazy about this but my sister was. I am not big on pasta -Scallops - pleasantly surprised, the saffron risotto wasn't overpowering, this was a satisfying dish - Sea bass - came bao style, baos were very thick for my liking but it came out piping hot with a slaw and a yummy sauce. Fried fish dish so heavier than expected - Steak frites - this is actually pork based. It was on the menu and I didn't read it thoroughly.. not a fan

Yelp
Hold onto your pantaloons because here comes a VERY in depth review- Heads up, I wish I would have called and asked before coming- the chefs tasting menu needs a minimum of 2 people. I came to dine alone and was excited to try but was a bit disappointed to find out I wasn't able to participate as a solo diner. That being said, I do completely understand that these are portioned out for 2 people, I just wish the language on the menus read that way or mentioned the minimum. As I was jotting down this note a very kind staff member offered me a mock tail (I'm taking a month off from alcohol). I appreciate the offer and customer service. The mock tail was light, zingy and refreshing. I can tell they have a great mixologist on staff even though it looks like they have select liquor options. Blueberry jalapeño ribs: a MUST get. These are tender, fall off the bone, nice small but hearty portion and is a flavor explosion. The jalapeño and blueberry combination is delightfully delicious, a perfect unexpected pairing. Sweet, savory with a slight kick. Salt and pepper shrimp: I don't know what I was expecting but I wasn't expecting this to eat like a salad out of a bowl.... But I really loved it. Again a play on spicy sweet but had awesome textures from the fried shrimp, the tart, sweet pineapple, snappy crunch from the peas and burst of tomatoes. Double corn truffle cavatelli: love the crunch and burst of corn, the truffle was inviting but not overpowering and this was just creamy enough. A great, balanced dish. The pasta was a great texture. Key lime pie: also a must order, especially during summer. Not heavy. Light crust with delicate toppings of cream and pineapple. Just tart enough to make your tastebuds dance but not get overwhelmed. I will also mention, I found the bar seating very uncomfortable because I kept feeling like I was sitting incorrectly and would fall backwards based on the stability of the chairs. Service was amazing, from the host to my server, bartender and runners, I really felt taken care of. My server offered great opinions and feedback in helping me chose which items to get for my meal. Another nod to my server, they mentioned that the service of 20% was already included. So many places that already include don't give you the heads up, I really appreciated this transparency and left additional as it was much deserved. Excited for my leftovers and to return (with another person) to take advantage of the tasting menu/ other items on this rotating menu. Great job Traif, definitely scored some great points for me toni

Yelp
This meal was SO good. I've always heard of Traif but this was when they were mostly a pork themed resto and me being a vegetarian, well that just wasn't going to work. Fast forward to 2024 and the menu has some veggie offerings so I immediately said yes. I ordered the gnocchi. My friend had the beef pasta? and we shared the cauliflower, and baby gem. I had a mezcal blood orange drink and we shared a bottle of skin contact wine on recommendation from the waiter. The food was incredible. The gnocchi is the best I've had. Fried, savory but with a hint of sweet from laying in a bed of purple yam purée. Followed by the cauliflower dish. The fresh cucumber and tortilla was a wonderful touch. I love the constant plays on savory, fried, sweet. My taste buds were very pleased. Will definitely need to come back soon.

Yelp
Phenomenal! I dined at Traif for a friend's dinner and I must admit I had my apprehensions as someone with dietary restrictions (gluten free and no pork). However, I was proven wrong and the chef was quite accommodating to my dietary needs. We did the chef's selection which was 8-9 courses and then dessert. I was able to partake in 7 courses with the group and I had a different dessert. While all of the courses were superbly delicious and offered a unique taste, the Spicy Bigeye Tuna Tartare and the Dayboat Scallops were my favorites! For my cocktail, I had the Rude Little Pig without the bacon rim and for dessert, the chef served me the Nutella mousse but everyone else had the bacon doughnuts which they loved.

Yelp
Service was terrible. We went on Valentine's Day . The food was rushed and we felt like we were being pushed out of the restaurant . Also they removed the wine pairing without letting us know . Also included a forced 20 % gratuity.
google avatar

Alex M.

Yelp
Decided to give Traif a try for a belated Valentine's Day date night with my partner, and we were both thoroughly pleased with the food, drinks, service, and atmosphere! We opted to try the tasting menu (which is an incredible bargain) and added on the wine pairing as well (which really did pair nicely with all of the dishes). While I don't want to spoil the tasting menu for folks (we personally thought it was best left up to a surprise), we can assure you we enjoyed every single dish and bite we had! It turned out to be a lot of food, but we didn't need to be rolled home ha! Essentially it was ~5 courses (with two dishes brought out at a time for each course, and the last being dessert). We also learned that they change up their menu fairly often (seasonally based), so we are excited to go back and try the tasting menu again!
google avatar

Yelp
Another birthday, another trip to one of my favorite restaurants in the city. As usual, I went for their tasting menu, which, once again, did not disappoint. Caulini salad Dayboat scallops Burrata cheese Crispy confit chicken wings Strawberry-cinnamon glazed pork ribs Oversized rigatoni pasta Braised short ribs Steak-frites Seared foie gras Mom's key lime pie Bacon doughnuts Everything was delicious, but if I had to pick a couple of dishes, I'd go for the scallops and the foie gras... truly divine. I'm shaving off a star this time because of the painfully slow service. The first 7 dishes came out at a reasonable speed, but we waited over an hour for the last couple of dishes and the desserts (which is way too long for a spoonful of food). This has always been the case, but this time the wait was unacceptable. Sure... Saturdays are busy, but that's why we made a reservation at 5pm. I just wonder how long people are waiting for a 8p dinner... Oh well.

Yelp
Aside from the mosquitoes in the back garden, we had a lovely dinner out here. We had a reservation at 7:30pm and chose the back because of the reviews noting the smokiness inside. In hindsight, I'd take smoke over mosquitoes. But ok, let me stop on the mosquitoes, because while I did get an annoying bite, they had bug spray set on every table and that's more consideration than almost all other restaurants with patio seating. The four of us opted for the tasting menu and we all walked away full. We each grabbed a cocktail as well - which were delicious! My cocktail had tomatoes in it and it was everything I've ever wanted; like the classy cocktail version of a Bloody Mary, just a hint of fresh tomatoes. And for $15, I'd come back just for cocktails. Favorite highlights of the tasting menu: - Scallops and risotto - Blueberry pork ribs - Fried snapper in bao buns But the main highlight? The sweetest and most attentive (without being overbearing) waitstaff. We definitely overstayed after our meal, chatting in the garden, and they were so kind to let us know that there was no reservation or party after us. We were quick to leave as soon as we noticed it emptying out, but they were so kind to let us sit around. Great meal, insane price, and 5 star staff. It was, dare I say, worth my mosquito bite. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Let's level set - I am amazed by that small - tight- a$$ - kitchen, churning out eats for all of us patrons. Yes, it's a small-cozy restaurant, maximizing every space possible, which also means great teamwork - the staff are well versed in not running over each other. We went for a 7pm reservation - it was packed. Decor - very Willyburg... it's a tapas theme restaurant, so share plates. Not a fan of the plastic chairs... not comfy for anyone with a curvy butt... kekeke. Very dim inside... so have your friends be flash ready for your food pic & selfies. Unisex bathroom... (to the lady in a black tight knit dress this past Friday... we (5 others waiting + waiter) all knew you were doing #2, a mercy flush would have helped - waiter had to pre-clean for us). Now for the food, we did the chef selection for a party of 7... aka 9 course tasting menu + desserts, but wish I added the foie gras... bc I wasn't impressed by 7 of the dishes and saw others with the seared foie gras... alas, I was filled from breathing in 2hrs of smoke. Total bill was less than $600... wow cheaper than my dinner at Kochi for 2 (not comparable in food). Highlights for the night: The rigatoni with pesto... and perhaps the fried snapper filet... (wish it was pan seared). Well seasoned and good texture. The others were either too salty (almost all), too mushy (prawns were not fresh), and too boring- lacking innovation (duck breast... burrata... ribs... scallops & risotto). Overall - probably a decent dinner spot for those who can't make it to the city but not worth a revisit. Yes, I heard it's TikTok famous... not my choice - thankfully. Pro-tip: leave your coats in the car and wear sh*t you can laundry right away! Otherwise... RIP my goose jacket. #yelplife #blahdinner #brooklyneats

Yelp
They're known for their generous prix fixe menu, but we decided to order some of their most talked about items Alá carte. The space is tight but there was an excitable buzz in the air and our server was extremely friendly. We ordered: - foie gras: this dish was delicious, but beware it is extremely rich and cooked rather rare. We probably could not have finished this creamy slab without the crunch of the bacon. - burrata: a bunch of juxtaposed flavors on another creamy glob. Wish there were more chip accompaniments for the cheese. - tuna tartare: a succulent pile atop a crunchy eggplant base. This was rather refreshing since the tuna was not too heavy but you may notice a big pattern of squishy object + fried crunch by now. - scallop risotto: a rich pile of rice and scallop with some brittle munches interspersed. The scallops were cooked very well. Overall, these plates were great as standalone items, but put together yielded a satiation like no other. We actually asked to cancel an order of chicken wings because we were so full. We probably could have left out another dish too since we were moving at a sluggish pace by the time the meal concluded. We cancelled our after-dinner plans in order focus all efforts on digestion. I would still come again to try some new dishes!

Yelp
Came on a Monday evening to celebrate a 30th birthday. i found this spot on tiktok hoping it would be a wonderful prefixed dinner with wine pairing for a reasonable price with wonderful staff and boy was this a HIT! We originally had an 8:30pm reservation but wanted to go in earlier which they easily accommodated! immediately upon entering we were seated and able to sit in the back terrace area which was stunning and so romantic as i mentioned we did the 10 course prefix with 5 wine pairings (2 dessert entrees and 1 dessert wine). we started with a delicious sweet white wine - tasted like candy and apples so good! we ate so many good things seriously everything was delicious- must shoutout the burrata and foie gras because of all the flavors the chef really nailed it. whats especially great about this restaurant is how fusioned the cuisine is! i definitely recommend everyone to check them out and do the wine pairing. had some great wines ive never had before, ate great food, and had a pleasant time

Yelp
Traif has been recommended to me by many people and I finally had the opportunity to try it out! I was able to get a very last minute reservation on a Friday night (unsure if it is normally difficult to get a reservation). My party and I chose to get the prefixe menu and it was definitely worth the $56! My favorite dishes were the eggplant tuna tartare and the arugula salad. They portion the plates based on how many people there are and we got nine plates with two plates of dessert. I liked how we were able to try a bunch of different protein and was able to realize I'm not the biggest fan of duck meat. Only knocking it down one star because most of the dishes were fried and would have appreciated more balance. I will definitely come back if I had a visitor!

Yelp
So previously I have tried its sister restaurant Xixa, and it is great. And then I went to this place, the server told me that they will give me seven to nine dishes. I told them that I will be allergic to seafood. So they actually give me nine days with almost no seafood. That is really sweet. I really love the dish I posted, the Foie gras. And it is less than $60 per person. So really a good price. The only thing may be sometimes between the dishes. There are some wait times. But I totally understand.
google avatar

Victoria R.

Yelp
Food was good! I am surprised for the location that they were not able to sub for allergies with some dishes. Service was nice and friendly. Ambiance was cute and casual. Might come back to try other items on the menu!

Yelp
4.5 to be exact. Went to their sister restaurant last year. I think Traif beat Xixa lol. Most of the dishes were pretty tasty. A bit too heavy on the latter ones. My favorite of the night was their burrata. All the flavors and textures were dancing in my mouth. It's definitely the best value course meal I ever had. Wish they had better ventilation in the restaurant. I came out smelled like I just had k bbq.

Yelp
I say this with ZERO exaggeration: This was the best meal I've ever had. Period. Those strawberry cinnamon glazed ribs were a 21 out of 10. I'm really impressed. So fresh. So delicious. Such a thoughtful menu. Wow.

Yelp
Fantastic date night at Traif!! We had the tasting menu and it was such an amazing tasting journey from the chef and such a great deal (8 courses and 2 desserts for $56)! Some of my favorites were the tuna tartare on tempura eggplants, scallops on risotto and the burrata, bacon marmalade & homemade chips. The portions were just right. The drinks were amazing - we ordered four different specialty cocktail and each was better than the last. We were seated at the bar so really got to see the small kitchen hard at work. I'm so impressed with what they do and the magic they create with such a small kitchen and staff! We were even talking about the meal the next day- with my boyfriend saying that it was one of his top 3 restaurants we've been to!

Yelp
How could I forget to upload all the delicious pics, ugh! Here ya go! Take a look at those glazed ribs, omg...

Yelp
Traif was a pleasant surprise. I saw it on TikTok and that they had a chefs tasting for $56/pp so the husband and I trekked over to Williamsburg to try it out. We ordered a few cocktails to start that were lovely. I got the one that had a bacon rim - interesting but tasty. For the meal it was 10' total plates - 8 savory and 2 sweet. They didn't bring us each a setting rather than one plate with enough for each of us, more tapas style. Some of the favorites were the scallop with risotto, the ribs & the bacon doughnut dessert. Every dish was tasty and we left satisfied but not overly full as some tasting menus can do. We sat in the back garden which was adorable. They had a few citronella candles but I wish I would have remembered my bug spray. All in all, great experience.

Yelp
After absolutely loving the tasting menu, we decided to come back a second time to try the regular menu. Every single dish was amazing, our favorites include the scallops with English pea-mint risotto and the toasted Parisian gnocchi. The risotto was flavorful and creamy paired perfectly with the scallops. The gnocchi was unlike anything I've ever had, it was crispy on the outside but super soft on the inside, and the flavor was mind blowing; the gnocchi is definitely a must try. The price is around what you would expect to pay from any good restaurant in NYC. Staff was friendly and attentive. We were seated directly across from the bar and chef so it was very cool to see everything being made; very welcoming and fun environment.

Yelp
Had dinner here with my boyfriend to celebrate his birthday. We got the chef's tasting and loved every single item that came out. Highlights for me were definitely the scallops, duck, and tuna tartare. The ambiance is very cozy with an open kitchen and cute backyard. The staff were attentive and even brought the dessert out with a candle for us!

Yelp
A great dinner had with girlfriends! The tasting menu was delicious (I always worry I'll be hungry after small plates!), but Traif did it right. They combined bizarre foods and flavors in a way that made sense. I also like that they didn't rush us and I really liked that they swapped out new plates for us multiple times during the meal. I didn't love the seating. If we had a fourth person at our table, they would've been hitting the back of the chair of the table behind us, and I hand a massive plant behind my head. The plant was there to break up the space, as there was a table right behind me as well but it did keep knocking me in the head. It's probably better than me listening to the other tables conversation the whole time. I will absolutely be returning here and recommending it to others. Shout out to the three men in the kitchen who worked tirelessly, calmly and consistently the whole time we sat. I enjoyed the open concept kitchen.

Yelp
This place is AMAZINg. Probably my one of my favorite restaurant in Brooklyn or Manhattan. I've here twice in 3 months because it's sooo good!! Thanks to other Yelp reviews, my husband and I went for the $55 chef menu. It was about 10 (?) dishes including two desserts. Every single dish was delicious. You also get very full at the end of the meal. The restaurant was quite busy so I think service was okay. It took me about 40 mins to get my drink but the servers were really nice. I would suggest booking a table outdoor because the back garden is cute and inside for abit Smokey. I would definitely come back again in the future because food is sooo good!

Yelp
The staff were so nice and really accommodated us for our birthday celebration. Drinks were really good, we loved the spicy kick in our drinks. They have an open kitchen so you smell all the goodness!! Chef selection choice was good and well balanced. It was quite filling and everything was great. Our favs were the scallops with risotto, foie gras, and the super tender pork steak

Yelp
Let's start by saying this place is a MUST. I discovered this place thru TikTok and what caught my attention was the tasting menu. $56 per person was a great deal! Just note the table will be sharing the tasting dishes but trust me it will be filling. 8 savory plus 2 sweets. It is a tasting after all. Food 5/5 Every dish that came out was absolutely delicious. A lot of flavors and nothing was lacking anything. My favorite by far is the Scallops / Tuna Tartare and duck breast. Service 5/5 Our waiter was attentive and informative. They greet us and asked if it's our first time visiting and proceed to introduce things in menu and give us suggestion. Ambiance 5/5 They have a indoor and outdoor seating. I elected to sit inside since it was chilly out. I love the vibe. The music wasn't too loud and they were playing city pop! Overall this restaurant is a must. I would most likely come back

Yelp
Oh my oh my...I knew I was goin' to love this place when I walked past this week and read the name. I'm happy to report it didn't disappoint, in fact it exceeded our expectations and was a delicious and very well executed dinner on a Monday night in hipster Williamsburg, in a section of town adjacent to the more traditional and orthodox community. There were four of us and we opted for the 8 course shared tasting menu and they served us essentially all of the highlights off that a la carte offering. We started with a roasted cauliflower, tomato and puffed rice salad that was dressed beautifully and was a great starter. We then dove into the spicy big eye tuna tartar on a tempura eggplant wafer. Yum ! Next was the glazed Berkshire pork ribs and the dayboat scallops resting on a bed of mint pea risotto - a highlight. Then we had the seared foie gras with sweet potato and a fried egg - terrific and something we miss now that it is outlawed where we live in the SF Bay Area. They then brought out a lightly fried Japanese snapper with Bao and cabbage (yum). Next was a pan seared gnocchi on a roasted Carrot purée followed by roasted duck with a rhubarb caponata (excellent) and then a roasted lamb shank with an English pea purée. Wow ! The quality dishes kept coming ! Then we closed with two desserts - the key lime pie and then the bacon ricotta mini zeppoles (a classy version of my childhood favorites from the feast of san gennero in little Italy). The wine list was reasonably priced and we landed on a Pinot noir for $65 that did the job. A great little restaurant with a very talented and accomplished chef and service crew. Wish this establishment was closer to our home in the SF Bay Area. When we return to visit with our son we will be sure to be back !! Do yourself a favor and eat here. It was seriously excellent !! The tasting menu has ample portions and high quality ingredients masterfully prepared. Service was attentive and they hit it out of the park !! Bravo !!

Yelp
Love the service, the portion along with the food in general. This is definitely a must try! They offer a 8 course chef menu for a total of $56, amazing deal. However when me and my group of friends went to visit, we knew exactly what we wanted to try so we didn't op for the chef menu. The scallops and the tuna tartar on bed of fried eggplants is a must try. So good we wanted a second serving. Salt and pepper shrimp came with mangos and watermelon which was a must try, however the sourness from the mangos threw this dish off. Could of did without this dish. Not many places makes Seared Foie, so when I see it on the menu I have to get it. The taste is a bit gamy, but the seared was to perfection! The chef takes a twist in all their dishes, although these are common dishes the pairing of the dishes will give it a new taste, must try and experience for yourself.

Yelp
One of the best value dining experiences I've had all year. My friends and I stopped by on a rainy Friday evening and this place was packed. We dined for over 2 hours and the restaurant stayed open for us. Thank you to the team for creating a memorable experience. We opted for the chefs tasting menu and ordered a bottle of red. Some of my favorite dishes included the scallops and risotto, strawberry pork ribs, gnocchi, burrata, and Moms key lime pie. The scallops and risotto were cooked perfectly. My friends and I were fighting over the last bite. The pork ribs with strawberry cinnamon glaze were absolutely delicious. Fall of the bone tender meat. A sleeper dish was the burrata. The addition of the bacon- bourbon marmalade, balsamic vinegar and the crispy pimenton potato chips were absolutely perfectly. I feel like this is the bar when it comes to burrata. All of the textures were on point. The dining experience was perfect. Dark dining area with some outdoor seating options. Our food came out quickly and all of the waiters knew exactly what we were about to devour. The only downside is the place is tight. So if you want some space when dining this is not the place. You'll be excusing yourself every couple of minutes when your seat nudges with someone else's. Overall, an amazing dining experience. Great value and so many items to choose from. You get a nice mix of America, Asian and Italian dishes.

Yelp
Traif is a hidden gem in Williamsburg! This is a small cozy restaurant that hits you with amazing smells as soon as you walk in. The four of us were seated in the back away from the bar and area where most of the guests are seated. Service, however, was still great! We indeed were not forgotten. The food was all great! My personal favorite was the Rigatoni. Everything was such a distinct flavor, I wish we had swapped the Steak Frites with something more unique. This restaurant is branded as pork centric on google, but I definitely would not say so. We ordered all non pork dishes with plenty of more options to choose from on the menu. Definitely would recommend trying this restaurant if you are in Williamsburg and want unique dishes! Great for a date night or small group of friends.

Yelp
Traif absolutely lives up to its hype - for a 10 course meal for $56 ( around 70 given that tip is included), this meal was quite phenomenal and filling! They're known for their shareable 10 course meal, even though they are pork-centric, their dishes excellently alternate between pork and other things. The waiter said that they accommodate vegetarians and vegans. They had this fresh spicy salmon on a slab of fried eggplant that was excellent. Their pulled pork slider has the smokiness you would find at a bbq place, except it actually tastes better than many bbq joints in NYC (hot take!). They end with two desserts - and I was a huge fan of their key lime pie, it was so light and felt like a great palette cleanser to the meal. All in all - I'd highly recommend this place and if there are maybe just two in a group, I'd suggest sitting at the bar near the kitchen so you can see all the action.

Yelp
Cozy atmosphere. Friendly, quick service. Yummy, creative cocktails. We did the chefs menu and it did not disappoint! Enjoyed the whole meal, but my favorite was the scallops (my husband's favorite was the ribs). Would definitely recommend this place abs would love to come back!

Yelp
It's been years since my last visit to Traif and on a whim, my husband and I went in for dinner on a wintery Wednesday night. We were met with the most welcoming waiter who seated right away and introduced us to the $56/pp tasting menu. While intriguing, we decided to go a la carte and ordered a sampling of veggies, meats, pasta, and of course... dessert! We started the meal with a warm brussel sprout salad filled with pops of super exciting flavors and textures. Tossed in a Thai basil coconut curry vinaigrette, the limey-ness paired so with the crunch of the peanuts, the char of the brussels, and the earthiness of the blue corn chips. Out of all the dishes of the night, the THIS wAS definitely my favorite. Next was the shrimp! Perfectly battered and fried to a light crisp, the dish ate surprisingly light having been with the pairing of sweet potatoes. And though I was skeptical about the pineapples, I will admit that it added a nice burst of acid. Out of all we ordered, the confit wings were most intriguing. Unexpectedly, the wings came out battered and fried, forming a coat of exceptional crunch! Inside, the meat was tender and buttery, like one would expect when you hear the word "confit". Drizzled around was a peculiarly spiced sauce that tasted like black garlic, except there was no black garlic in the description! To balance the richness of the dish, pickles were place on top of each wing, adding some freshness to the butter dish. The cavetelli is also something to look out for! Paired with the soft yet toothsome handmade morsels was a nice variety of mushrooms. In an umami bombed sauce, I appreciate the floral notes of black pepper the most! My least favorite dish of the night was the short rib, which ate dry. The flavor of the guajilo peppers took over the subtle sweetness of the smooth parsnip "hummus", which the dish could have used a lot more of. It was unfortunate because the homemade pita was quite good. We finally ended our meal with the donuts. Dusted with bacon bits, the donuts sat atop a beautiful coffee mouse. We were most impressed with the texture of the donuts as it cut like a yeast donut BUT had a great sponge cake like texture. To be honest, I could have done without the bacons and rather a few sprinkles of flakey salt.

Yelp
An amazing experience through and through, so glad Traif remained consistent over the past few years. I revisited the restautant recently, and fell in love with it once more. The chef selection menu is a great deal, especially in this inflationary environment where other restaurants are giving much less while charging more. My favorite dishes were the scallops and fried snapper, but every dish was at least great. Also had a few of the cocktails, which were generously portioned and tasted amazing, especially the Red Pearl!

Yelp
Cute restaurant. We had a really friendly waiter. We didn't do the tasting menu as my date has a shellfish allergy. We tried 5 small plates and a dessert. We got the spicy tuna which was great and the foie gras. I loved the foie gras it was delicious 10/10. We also got the pork ribs which were my absolute favorite. My date got the lamb and it was not great very fatty. He also got the gnocchi which was excellent. We ended our dinner with the key lime pie. Perfect end to a nice dinner. Would return.

Yelp
This place truly exceeded our expectations! We enjoyed an incredible 8-course tasting menu with two delightful desserts for just $56. The scallops and fish dishes were exceptional, while the pork was the only dish that didn't quite stand out. Despite the visually small portions, we were pleasantly surprised to leave feeling full. The cocktails were not only delicious but also reasonably priced. In a generous gesture, they even offered us a complimentary replacement for a cocktail we didn't enjoy. The charming backyard with a grapevine was such a nice vibe.

Yelp
Horrible service with rude manager. We had a 6pm reservation and due to unforeseen circumstances we were not going to be able to make our reservation and called the morning of to notify the restaurant. When trying to get in touch with the restaurant, we called over 5x times but no one picked up. They only pick up during service hours... We finally left a voicemail to inquire about cancelling..and asked for someone to call us back..and instead of anyone calling us, we received a charged for $150 cancellation fee on our credit card. I've lived in New York for over a decade and I have NEVER received such audacious service from a restaurant. To charge our credit card without confirmation or speaking with us, is outrageous. When we were finally able to get in touch with someone at the restaurant the person we spoke to was so rude and could not care less about charging us and said he would "do us a favor" by putting it on a gift card. I've frequented many restaurants in NYC and I have never encountered a restaurant that was so rude and unforgiving. They clearly don't care about customer service and bringing in new clientele.

Yelp
4.5 stars but rounding up! Their tasting menu is hard to beat in quality and price $56/PP for 7-8 salty plates and 2 desserts. Some favorites off the top of my head: tuna tartar on a fried eggplant, strawberry baby ribs, scallops on top of a risotto! There was a great variety of both seafood, land meat, and carbs. I came hungry and left STUFFED. I highly recommend sitting inside as the garden did not look very comfortable and even inside we had gotten bit by the mosquitos.

Yelp
I hesitated to review Traif because part of me really wanted to keep this hidden gem all to myself, but I just can't help but share how wonderful my experience here was! I recommend going with chef's selection - $56 for 10 courses (including dessert) is such a steal in NYC! Some highlights of my meal were the dayboat scallops, snapper with bao buns, parisienne gnocchi, and key lime pie but I genuinely enjoyed every dish -- love how they all felt like such inventive flavor combinations made with lots of care :)

Yelp
We had a fantastic dinner here, the quality and diversity of food was truly fantastic - and I'm not going to lie, I'm still blown away by how affordable they make such a luxurious meal. As others have noted, this is probably the best prix-fixe deal in all of NYC, given the reasonable price and how extremely high quality the food is. We started with a few cocktails, I don't remember the names as they were custom to the restaurant, but I can say we found all 4 cocktails we had delightful and very reasonably priced. From there we debated going ala carte vs prix fixe; my wife is pescatarian, and I eat everything (prix fixe has to be same menu for everyone), so I was seriously torn! That said, we ended up going prix fixe pescatarian as getting to try 10 courses was more critical than getting some meat. I ended with no regrets at all. It's not that the meat dishes served to other tables didn't look amazing (they did), but I loved every dish we got, and the fish dishes were so fantastic and filling that I had no meat-FOMO. If you're looking for a high quality meal with diverse dishes that's very filling, Traif is worth traveling to.

Yelp
That's how they get you, 55 dollar tasting menus with amazing cocktails that bring your total to 200+. Traif knows what they're doing. It's hard to find a good tasting menu in nyc that tastes good and serves you more than 3 courses at a reasonable price. Traif, however, defies the norm and delivers a high quality 10 course tasting menu for the affordable price of $55. A steal! My partner and I were seated in the area between the indoor and outdoor terrace which provides the ambient lighting and greenery without the consequences of the outside elements. Our server was attentive and informative and explained how the tasting menu works. You can choose to have the tasting menu fully curated by the chefs or you can pick a few dishes that you want to try and they'll be included in the tasting. Since my partner is allergic to shellfish, we had our tasting menu shellfish free with a side of scallop risotto a la carte for me. Standouts for me include the salad, pasta, fish tacos, pork tenderloin and steak frites, bacon and ricotta donuts, the scallop risotto, and the prickly pear mezcal (forgot the name of the drink). All these items were super flavorful, the textures worked together, and the flavor combinations were great. If it weren't for my partner and I ordering four prickly pear mezcal cocktails, we would've had a nice and affordable dinner. But unfortunately, the mixologist at Traif is dangerous and my partner and I fell for the trap. Regardless, we had a good time.

Yelp
I've had Traif bookmarked for a while, as I had heard about their shareable plates. We came here as a small group for an early dinner, and focused on ordering a variety to sample: +crispy portobello mushroom 'sprin groll's with shiso leave, yuzu nuoc cham, and cherry nam prik +spicy bigeye tuna tartare, tempura japanese eggplant, kecap manis - this was super underseasoned and not enjoyable +burrata cheese, bacon-bourbon marmalade, pimenton potato chips, scallions, balsamic +salt & pepper shrimp, pineapple, roasted sweet potatoes, Thai basil, and sweet-spicy vin; not at all seasoned +seared foie gras, sunny egg, crispy prosciutto, 'rainbow fingerling' potato, maple, hot sauce; too heavy of a dish, as the foie gras is already decadent, and adding generous amount of potatoes and a fried egg made this dish a bit too much +toasted parisienne gnocchi, butternut squash, white truffle butter, balsamic, and ricotta salata +dayboat scallops, braised leek risotto, lemon-pistachio brown butter, salsa verde; the scallops were way overcooked and super rubbery +braised short ribs, english pea 'hummus', guajillo pepper sauce, spiced pita We finished with their mom's key lime pie, graham crust, pineapple ginger, and five spice and their bacon donuts - ricotta 'zeppoles', dulce de leche, and coffee cream. The donuts, which I was excited for, was more dough than filling. There were too many staff members behind the counter, and I feel that they were losing track of orders or not timing things, as most of the food received were cold. Overall, the dining experience was super disappointing. The place is very small and jam-packed, so if you're claustrophobic, this is not the place for you. +cold food +underseasoned

Yelp
Tarif would receive a 5 star review out of me if the menu had better value. The ambiance was calm, earthy with many plants around and back enclosed patio garden. The waiter we had was great and was very polite. We were even accommodated because we came in with 2 babies and a stroller and workers moved around space for us. The food was tapas style but ~$20-$40 a plate. Small and shareable

Yelp
Wow, an amazing place that probably doesn't receive all the love it deserves. We went on a Thursday night for a team outing and the interior was deserted (only a handful of people in the back courtyard, which was cute and well lit). Our table of 10 was alone in the main dining area. Everyone was super nice and helpful; however, the staff was a little slow on fulfilling drink orders. They only had one person working the bar, but I would think they would be pushing drinks out fast, especially if we're the only group there and that's where they're making the most money. Our group did the tasting menu for $56. Was a tremendous value. While each plate is relatively small, it is 9-10 courses and you are filled by the end. Here's the rundown: Endive and radicchio salad with a miso like dressing - very very good. Topped with peanuts Seared scallops in a cheese risotto - scallops were super fresh and tasty, but the risotto needed a hint of something to get it to where it needed to be. Fried eggplant topped with tuna tar tar - amazing. Small bite but maybe the best bite Seared foie gras topped with bacon and a sunny side up egg - like OMG Tempura shrimp with mango and watermelon - good, but probably the least special dish of the night Potato gnocchi in a creamy mushroom sauce - incredible little pillows. Tasted like truffle shaving on top but I cannot confirm BBQ ribs - fried and topped with sweet bbq sauce with strawberries and jalapeños. A strange busy tasty combo. Ribs came right off the bone Japanese red snapper - served with bao buns to make like sliders. Very good sauce and pickled red onions served with it Pork tenderloin frites - pork needed a tad more flavor but the sauce and fries were *chefs kiss* Key lime pie - great and probably the most straightforward thing Bourbon, bacon donuts - everyone raves about these but they were not my thing In short, 10/10 recommend for a group gathering and extensive, affordable tasting menu

Yelp
Went there for their tasting menu. We added an additional pasta dish because we were still kinda hungry. Don't get me wrong it's enough food. We just like to be well feed! Everything was good but was there something I had to ordered again for a larger portion, no. But overall food was good! Service was great. We sat in the green house area with a fan but it was just fine. Not too hot. We went kind of early so it wasn't packed. But when we were leaving it was starting to fill up. The garden area is cute but I rather be in the green house away from the bugs.

Yelp
Went here for dinner on a Thursday night, quaint restaurant in Brooklyn with a very cozy atmosphere, it may not be a super fancy Michelin star restaurant but the food you get here may as well be. Don't even bother looking at the menu, just ask for the chef's selection. It is a marathon of amazing food, my personal favorite was the scallop risotto, but I won't spoil it for you so you can be surprised yourself. All I can say is I enjoyed every single dish, and there are enough of them to make you think that the price is almost a bargain. Service was fast with a thorough description of the plate every time, and you can watch the chef and sous chef meticulously measure out ingredients, plate, and garnish every dish. Also the bartender Anthony is fantastic, super nice and friendly, make sure you get a chance to chat with him.

Yelp
Went here for a last minute date night and did the chef's special of 8 plates and 2 desserts and it was incredible. The meal was priced well, especially for the amount of food we received. The staff was polite and attentive, food was delicious and the space was cozy and intimate. The back patio area in particular looked very cute. Perfect for a date night, celebration, or bringing out-of-towners for a warm welcome to the city. Can't believe I haven't tried this place sooner, I'll definitely be returning!

Yelp
Traif was introduced to me ages ago when Yelp Elite events were easy to get into and winery vendors did not all have giant social media presences. Traif is easily one of my favorite restaurants in the city. The tuna tartare is probably the best form of neo-Asian-fusion, tapas sushi with sriracha spiced tuna tartare served on tempura eggplant--you can't beat this. I've made a variation using dill chips. Get this, get more than one if the ambiance allows. The bacon soup, bacon doughnuts, hamachi, scallops (on butternut squash puree or the chef's fancy for the month) and foie gras with fried quail egg are other go-to dishes. Once in a while I will crave the strawberry-cinnamon glazed berkshire baby back ribs and the beef cheeks. Try the drinks, tip the waitresses, and enjoy being Traif--'non-kosher' in Yiddish. Recently, tried the burrata with bacon jam and that was amazing! Great place for a date, friend's gathering, or life event celebration.
