Rome’s Best Food Neighborhood Is San Lorenzo—Here's Where to Go | Bon Appétit

"A spartan, sunlit trattoria helmed by Mamma Rosanna Di Vittorio, beloved for comfort food that blends Puglian seafood-and-olive-oil traditions with Roman favorites; expect dishes like a rice-and-mussels casserole, simmered bitter greens with fava-bean purée, pillowy gnocchi in mutton ragù, and crisp puntarelle dressed with anchovy vinaigrette, all served amid the rumble of public transport passing outside." - ByKatie Parla

A local friend recommended this restaurant to me, and there is no doubt that they were right about this hidden gem in Rome! Tram Tram offers a variety of delicious, authentic Italian dishes in a fairly affordable price. If you are a pasta lover, this is the perfect place to visit if you happen to be nearby!

This is the type of restaurant I’m always in the search for: authentic, not too pretentious, not too pricy, not gimmicky and delicious. The restaurant is from a family from Puglia and combines Roman classics with Pugliese cuisine. Every stage of the meal was a highlight by itself and it would keep surprising as it unfolded. We had the Vignarola (highly reccommend) as well as the Alici Fritti as a starter. Then we had Carbonara and the Papardelle “Tram Tram” with artichokes. We finished with the crema al limone with strawberries. We finished with some Finnocchietto liquor on ice. I am just happy and thankful that we went to this place.

Owned by sisters from Puglia, it’s one of the beautiful trattorias that maybe a bit out of the way but, consequently, isn’t as tourist infested and very pleasant. The cuisine is mostly Roman with a few sentimental touches from the South. The anchovies were wonderful and fresh in a home style breading. The liver and various other offals beautifully cooked and hearty. The Pajata was amazing, look it up and don’t faint. The pasta with squid was simple and fresh, perhaps the only dish that didn’t impress. The homemade cake with figs was a beautiful ending. We had a bottle of local wine to go with the meal but you will certainly find a more recognizable bottle to your liking. A simple but beautiful restaurant, we like to visit most times we are in Rome.

Definitely come here if you are in San Lorenzo. The food here is superb and the Tiramisu really hits the spot. My boyfriend does not even like Tiramisu and he really liked this one. We ordered the meatballs, the fried anchovies, and the lamb ragu. All of it was soooo yummy!! The meatballs were a little cold inside but otherwise, very tasty. There are seats outside for us smokers and a cozy atmosphere indoors too. The menu is very reasonably priced with most dishes around €15. The waiters are all very friendly and quick, I really enjoyed my dinner here and I would come here again! 10/10

We had a great meal and experience at this restaurant. We went for lunch on a Monday and the waiter couldn’t have been more helpful. He was very friendly and patient with our ordering. Very old school but extremely flavoursome. We picked among the daily specials and were not disappointed. The Tiramisu was amazing. Thank you for your hospitality.

Went for dinner with high expectations as they had alot of culinary awards/stickers on their door. Service was good, friendly and attentive staff. Dinner was just average, food was on the salty side. Prices were fair but there are more restaurants with the same price range with better tasting food.

Google
Small family owned restaurant on the outskirts of the city, specializing in Roman dishes. The food was generous and well made, with a home cooked feel to it. We enjoyed trying tripe in tomato sauce. The atmosphere was a bit spartan and we felt a little rushed.

Visiting this place left mixed feelings. On the one hand, the place is very nice and authentic with an interesting atmosphere. On the other hand, the quality of the dishes did not leave any impressions at all. The dishes from the "menu of the day" were clearly better worked out than the main menu, but still not exciting. The flavor combinations were weird.

Yelp
Great place with a great price. The food was awesome and the host excellent! Highly recommend and love the atmosphere of sidewalk dining.

Yelp
Away from the tourist crowds in a quirky location where you have a sense that there's a story within the walls. In the best way, it feels like a family owned restaurant. There is a both a menu and a specials board offering very seasonal dishes. Every item is true to the region and the season. I can't remember the names of the dishes we ordered, but they were all sensational. Looking forward to going back again.

Yelp
I just love this place. The owner was like the doting Italian grandmother we never had, even if she didn't speak a word of English. The Gnocchi Ragu and Rigatoni Pajata were both great. It was a really enjoyable meal for food, ambiance, and service that made you feel welcome and at home. Tram Tram is outside the normal tourist area, east of Termini, near Basilica di San Lorenzo and Cimiterio Verano (both well worth visiting).

Yelp
First discovered it about 20 years ago and thought it was great. There were eight of us this past Sunday and the experience was awful. The lady seated by the front door looked visibly annoyed (I think she's the owner) as we walked it (we had booked a few weeks earlier). Nuthatch sort of set the tone. Major problems with one off wine bottles (we were six after all) and mix ups on who ordered what. Food remains decent. What we object d to was the attitude of the owner and the staff and the general lack of attention to detail. Sad.

Yelp
THE best mom and shop restaurant in ALL of Rome! The pasta was everything I dreamed it would be. We had the pesto pasta and the seafood spaghetti. Both dishes were cooked to perfection! Thank you Tram Tram for an amazing experience! I already told all of my friends about you! :)

Yelp
Wonderful Italian restaurant slightly off the beaten path - but well worth the trip! As its name suggests, it's right off the metro train, although we took our car so I can't explain how to get here by train. The food was delightful and served by a woman in her late 30s who was buff enough to win a body building contest! We loved the atmosphere of this casual, family-oriented restaurant.

Yelp
Frequent European traveler/food enjoyer perspective: avoid this restaurant. You are in Rome. No need for a mediocre dinner in a tired atmosphere. The menu was extremely limited, we were told what to order in this empty restaurant on a beautiful Friday night. Fried anchovy appetizer was just okay; one seafood and one veggie pasta were heavily over-salted and certainly not fresh pasta. Add stale bread, a flower "salesman" allowed to enter the nearly empty dining room and "trinket salesman" who was only turned away from the dining room after I shook my head no, well, you get the idea. The wine was decent, though the vintage year on the menu was 2003; the bottle was 2010. The menu needs updating. It felt like the pantry was as empty as the chef's inspiration. Time to close or shake things up.

Yelp
Owner very involved and wants you to be happy. Food was excellent and very fresh. Unique and interesting dishes from all over Italy. A little out of the way from tourist areas... which makes it that much better.
