Great Road Trip Worthy Breweries to Visit in Southwest Michigan from Chicago | Eater Chicago

"Usually it’s Michiganders who transplant themselves to Chicago, but Transient Brewing’s Matt Betts packed up shop and landed at this Michigan brewery after years of bouncing around Chicago-area production facilities. Betts came to brew in the Mitten thanks to the native yeasts that float around the many fruit farms in the area which facilitate wild ales, but it’s mostly the hefty IPAs and big barrel-aged beers like their famed Buckley Stout that keep people coming back for more." - Karl Klockars

Google
Good looking taproom, nicely decorated. Multiple beer styles available on draught, friendly staff and a crazy selection of bottles. The dream place for Barrel-Aged lovers

Nickolas Marcus Magee

Google
Transient Artisan Ales Staff were brilliant, welcoming and graceful hosting Wesby-Magee Notary Services LLC "Notarizing Stuff at The Taproom" Pop-Up Event. The atmosphere was great, relaxing and joyful. Definitely be coming back again for none work related stuff 😂😂

Rob Zograph

Google
My friend and I stopped in on our way back from Chicago for a pit stop on our journey home. We were met with a friendly bearded face of Bob. Bob was great! We chatted about many things and had a pint before getting bottles and cans to-go. Also, holy cow, the to-go selection was absolutely second to none! I'm not sure Horrock's had this good of a selection.

Sam Morgan

Google
Fantastic beer especially if you are looking for big beers. Their stouts are amazing. The guy that serves you is awesome knowledgeable and makes great recommendations. I love this place and return here every year from Cincinnati.

Mateo Gebon

Google
The beers at Transient are solid, and I didn’t have a single bad one during my visit. The last beer I had, a high gravity stout with notes of toasted coconut, was about as good of a dessert beer as I’ve ever had. Despite being so strong, it wasn’t boozy at all. I also like their lagers. The staff was friendly, and the space was comfortable. If you want a good beer, you can’t go wrong in going here.

Google
I had the Ski Brew, a fruity sour. It was a fun one! Nice outdoor area, including easy access to a pretzel truck selling delectable soft pretzels. Nice lounge area on one side including a Demolition Man jukebox & they also sell carryout beer (and books too)!

Tom Dominikowski

Google
Unquestionably the best craft brewery in Harbor Country. High quality and variety of beers on tap. The selection is excellent, with unique and wonderful flavors to discover. Cozy and pleasant vibe.

Sam Florio

Google
Remind me of microbreweries I've been to in California, with an open to the outdoors design. They always seem to have pilsners and lagers on tap which I like.

Yelp
GREAT BEER and THE FOLKS whom run the tap room .Nice small venue dog friendly . We will return when we are back in the great state of Michigan in a couple of weeks .
google avatar

Lindsey K.

Yelp
Great selection of tapped and fridge beers. Staff is very knowledgeable of their brews. Inside is quant but you can bring your dog! Before you go you should know they do not offer food.

Yelp
This is a cool little place. I tried the marionberry and cherry sours and a pilsner. I don't normally love sours but they were good. The green bar chairs were uncomfortable. There was more than one kind of chair though so you might get lucky at a different table. Friendly staff. I would stop in again.

Yelp
My wife and I visited Transient Artisan Ales in Bridgman, Michigan and had a great experience. We brought our pug with us and were happy when the bartender said we could bring him inside! There are so few places that allow pups inside, so this was a pleasant surprise. There is plenty of seating inside, which was great because they got busy pretty quickly. The outside area was nice and we would have sat out there, but it was pretty hot. Once inside, I ordered a hazy IPA, which was really good. I can't remember the name, but it was the only hazy IPA they had on tap. The place is very chill and the bartenders, as well as the other customers, were very friendly. We'll definitely make another trip there in the near future.

Yelp
Simple location and impressive brews. Limited seating, but it was also raining and coviding today, but we still had a table right away at 2:45pm on a Friday afternoon. We were across the street Monday, but Transient waa closed - it was worth circling back on our trip home. The Mind to Devour IPA was the best IPA on our Michigan beer tour. The barrels in the seating room off to the side are not for show, although they look awesome. We sat next to some barrels that were fillws in March 2018. We tried three stouts and had to sip them! Delish and strong! An excellent stop for our bewr tour! No food (or water durong Covid- bring your own). They have extensive carryout options and you can prder in advance of arrival if you just want to make a quick stop.

Yelp
Here with my son in law Lee Great spot for some cold beer n conversation Small local brewery in MI Finally found a craft beer I liked

Yelp
Been here about 4 times now. Really good beer, cool vibe and music, and friendly people working here. Probably my favorite spot in the area, especially during the warmer months. Solid work you guys!

Yelp
On a Michiana Beer Tour, an employee at Beer Church Brewing told my group that Transient was a must, especially since DRAFT Magazine listed Transient as a Top 25 Brewery on the Rise in 2016. Hearing that factoid was all we needed to hear. We visited the small brewery later that afternoon and got five-ounce pours of the Mutual Abberation, Foeder #2, Big Rip, and a Pineapple Gose. It's a good thing we listened to our new friend from Beer Church because all of them were outstanding ales. At the conclusion of our trip, my friends and I agreed that Transient was one of the best breweries we checked out on the trip. We were all very, very impressed! Other perks: -dog-friendly -outdoor seating -6-packs for purchase
google avatar

Craig M.

Yelp
Absolutely loved my two experiences here. The beers are amazing! My last trip was on Dec 27th and the winter draft list had many stouts and BA stouts that we're right up my alley. We also ordered the All Jammed Up sour. It was amazing!! Transient is a must stop for craft beer fans and the causal beer drinker. Yes recommend getting a flight of beers...
google avatar

Ted C.

Yelp
It's definitely worth the trip to come to Transient. I like that they have beers in different sizes so that you aren't always loading up, particularly since there are other good breweries around. While I think they make a good variety of beers their stout, Buckley is good. I was there for Bark Lord and despite it being busy with a line out the door the process was fairly smooth. However, their wild ales are definitely worth a drink or two. More importantly, it was so easy to be able to pick up conversations with folks. Besides beer nerds who were there just to pick up and maybe get a picture or two there are locals who come just because they live nearby. Transient definitely gets a good mix of both, which is a good thing if you want to talk about more than OG plato and other beer nerd stuff.

Yelp
My group of girlfriends and I were on a Michiana beer adventure, after learning that Transient was listed in Draft Magazines 25 Breweries on the Rise in 2016 specializing in wild ales we decided this was a much needed stop. We shared a flight of 5 generous pours and each beer was lovely. You know a brewery is doing something right when you can't pick a favorite from their lineup, they were all exceptional. The atmosphere is bright and airy with a large garage door that opens extending to a smaller outdoor seating area. The space is small and intimate. Dogs are allowed in the taproom which I always appreciate. The brewery is located close to Warren Dunes State Park so the vibe seemed beachy, quiet, and relaxed. It's a place I could see myself lingering for an entire afternoon. My friends and I all decided this was one of our top brewery stops out of the ten we visited over the weekend. Other observations: -They had several beers in cans & bottles for purchase -No food available in their taproom but the area had several restaurants within walking distance -You can bring your own food & snacks into the brewery -Parking was easy, lots of available street parking Already planning my return! Hopefully this summer.
google avatar

Kay J.

Yelp
Love the open garage door to the little patio. The Taproom is industrial and comfortable. No food but you can bring in outside food. There were 7 beers on tap. Only 2 IPAs. Limited choices in merchandise but lots of canned beers to go.
google avatar

Ed M.

Yelp
One of the top tier breweries in the nation. I've had things from Modern Times, Narrow Gauge, Mikerphone, Windmill, 3rd Phase. Those are some great breweries and this one is right up there. Their barrel aged and double dry hopped IPA's are absolutely phenomenal.
google avatar

Gracie S.

Yelp
A five. Five stars. Why? SOURS. It's hard to find really good really sour beers but Transient NAILED it. We went on a whim... a group of us were hitting up breweries in the area and were going to go to Tapistry across the street. We saw Transient and stopped in there first. We were SHOCKED at the amount of sours on tap and the fact that even more were bottled. We ended up spending a significant amount of time there and literally bought 8 bottles to take home. Long live their sours!
google avatar

Blake W.

Yelp
Of course the beers here are amazing but advertise what's available so people aren't mislead as to what is being served. Came in to try canuckly because it was advertised on the website as being on draft and it wasn't. There weren't any BBA stouts. And then you keep bottles of it where customers can see them tell them they're not for sale. Shame shame. That's ok. There are plenty of other places to buy beer.

Allyn A.

Yelp
Surprised by some excellent seltzer and Sours. Casual and friendly atmosphere. With a friendly staff. Quick service. A clear guide to which beers / flavors we were sampling would have been nice.
google avatar

Brittanny P.

Yelp
Some of the best IPAs my husband and I have ever had. While still incorporating a hoppy flavor, the IPAs here have an incredibly smooth finish. We loved the 'the juice is loose' and 'obligatory' IPAs. Really open and warm tap room. Friendly staff. Dog friendly. My husbands only complaint was a lack of TVs, which makes me question the quality of my company. Anyways, definitely recommend a visit.
google avatar

Nicole W.

Yelp
A must visit destination when in the area. Their beers are outstanding and they've always got something new to try! They're also dog-friendly indoors and out, which we appreciate since we travel with our pups!
google avatar

Karen G.

Yelp
Super tasty fruit beers- cherry and blueberry! Excellent stout- creamy and roasty. Dog friendly to boot. I wasn't a fan of the " mixed fruit saison"... Tasty like a IPA with a artificial funk at end. No tastes of fruit nor a farmhouse funk of a Saison.
google avatar

Heather N.

Yelp
This place is brand new! We enjoyed our first time here. I especially like the feel of the place, it is very open and there are cute lights hanging from the ceiling. Staff is laid back, and the place definitely has the trendy hippie vibe that Michigan seems to always go for:p We tried the raspberry beer- pretty sour but great and refreshing, the stout- FRICKEN AWESOME! They don't have food yet so when we were there people were going to the brewery across the street and bringing food in. Don't know how I feel about that lol, but it would be awesome if they got some food choices ! Prices are alright. We will definitely be back
google avatar

Pat D.

Yelp
If you haven't been, you need to go. Spare tap room, no food, but that means dogs can attend the festivities. About 8 beers served; they change daily. Prices very cheap, for what the serve, quality and volume. As a casual sampler there is always something main stream and good. But this is beer geek heaven-- I am atypical in selecting pilseners, lagers and lighter I PAs. The typical customer opts for stouts double ipas and more chewy selections, brews I avoid. It's a happy place
google avatar

Buckeye D.

Yelp
This place has good beer.. But, they randomly close at 8pm on Saturday night in the middle of summer. If your business is selling beer, being open later than 8pm might be a step in the right direction. The 3x I have been here, the person waiting on us had the personality of a lamp post. I do love that they allow dogs but Tapistry across the street is much better.
google avatar

Adri A.

Yelp
Great brewery! Great staff! Great beer. No food, but plenty of nearby food option locations, so plan for a before or after meal beverage here! If you miss stopping here on your visit of Bridgman or South West Michigan you are missing out! Be sure to include this on your visit or regular basis.

Yelp
Okay, I feel really bad giving Transient a 3 star review because they are super friendly, have a cute little place (even if it isn't air-conditioned), and are working hard at brewing a good beer (which I know is not as easy at it seems) BUT I just didn't like the beer. I tried their IPAs and my partner in crime tried a few others (a saison, and a farmhouse ale or two) but all of the beers tasted like sours that were trying to be whatever they were labeled as (you know...a hoppy sour or a spicier sour). Something was just off. I don't know if it's the yeast they are using or what, but basically, unless you like sours and are expecting sours, you're not going to dig the brews here. Don't get me wrong...nothing was BAD. It was just different and didn't match the style it should have, in my opinion. Sorry, Transient, it pains me to say this but I think I will be sticking to Tapistry across the street.

Ian V.

Yelp
Consistently excellent beer. Discovered this place after the onset of COVID so I can't speak to the in-person bar experience, but after trying nearly a dozen different IPAs, sour beers, lagers, and farmhouse-style brews, I can say they're one of the highest-quality brewers in Berrien County.

Pete C.

Yelp
If there were a zero star rating, I would choose that. Asked for a sample before choosing and was told no we had to purchase full beers. All four in our group couldn't finish our beers and we all chose something different. Do yourself a favor and skip this one. Better options are close by.
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
Good clean choice of beer no food and friends like it. Very friendly atmosphere and dogs are welcome. The juice is loose and Cromulent are very good.
google avatar

Dina E.

Yelp
Great spot to stop for a beer or ale. I don't likd beer, but was pleasantly surprised they serve two sours! The Maigre I had was tasty! Small place, and only one server when we went, so you will def have to wait during prine weekend times, holiday wknds. Great prices and sample pours available at great prices! I had. $2 sour pour which was more than enough to check it out. Friendly server, try it!
google avatar

Jeannie T.

Yelp
It's October and not one German beer on rotation. A bit pricey also. Chairs didn't have backs....no support to sit very long. Meh. Out of the three breweries in the area, Haymarket has our vote.
google avatar

Jillian H.

Yelp
Really great beer selection from sours to IPA's to barrel-aged. They offer a variety of sizes which is a nice way to try several beers without feeling like you are overdoing it. We had a refreshing apricot sour beer which is great for the summer. The Juice is Loose a top-notch IPA and Prince of Barkness a barrel-aged pastry stout with cinnamon. This is a taproom so BYOF. The decor is typical taproom and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable.
google avatar

Colie Z.

Yelp
Small, cozy, inviting taproom. It is bright without being overly so. You can hold a conversation comfortably. The beer is wonderful. They were sadly out of growlers when we were in last. Their growlers are quite neat. I wanted to buy some merch because I have a beer merch addiction, but they were out of everything in my size. I'll be back for that lightweight sweatshirt (and some more beer)!
google avatar

Azra F.

Yelp
Delicious IPAs! We tried the zero discipline 1 and flightless, both are very good. Both are citrusy and not very bitter. I recommend!
google avatar

Laura S.

Yelp
Heard nothing but good things about Transient, so we had to make a stop during our Michigan vacation. My fiancee and I were impressed with all the beers we tried on our first flight, so we went back and tried all the others that were offered that day on a second flight. Bark Lord (get it, beer geeks?) was the standout - a chocolatey imperial stout with notes of cinnamon. Transient is kid- and dog-friendly, and they offer bottles for carryout. We picked up three bottles to go! Water is available for self service out of a glass drink dispenser, but no other drinks besides beer are served. I think this place will do great things down the road, so keep an eye on them.
google avatar

Liz W.

Yelp
Great beer, right off 94, atmosphere is open and airy. Lots of good to-go bottles but what they will give you in a growler is limited. 'Juice is loose' is the best dipa I've ever had (not available in a growler) and all drafts available in 16/10/5oz so you won't be too tipsy trying a few beers and getting back on the road. If you're heading east on 94 make this a pit stop instead of some crappy gas station!
google avatar

David D.

Yelp
Transient makes some of the best beer you will find anywhere, and the staff is the best. The candle on the bar today was an absolute travesty, though. One star for the candle, five stars for everything else. Love transient.
google avatar

Kaydi M.

Yelp
Beer is amazing and the staff is great! It's a cool stop for some craft beer! Must stop by!
google avatar

Paul L.

Yelp
GREAT beer!! The best beer in the area. The atmosphere needs to step it up though. Felt like I was drinking in a garage. Invest a little in the experience please...
google avatar

Kevin S.

Yelp
Great little brew pub off the beaten path ( in downtown Bridgman) beers with good body flavor an hopinesss Relaxed vibe looking forward to trying other varieties on future visits
google avatar

AJ D.

Yelp
Super flavorful beer made with the best stuff around and served in a cozy little tap room. Just tried the Montmorency, made with cherries, and it was amazing. You can bring in pets, food, and kids. Wonderful people and wonderful beer. A can't miss if you're in the area.

K F.

Yelp
I used to love their beers, but we went with some friends from out of town and the beer I had before was no longer there, I asked for a wheat beer and was told a sour beer would be like a wheat beer.......ah not even close, it was not beer in my book it was very sour and was raspberry with other fruits in it. I asked if I could have something different and they gave me a smaller glass with a pilsner beer it was much better, I spent over $30 on beer for all of us and I felt the gal did not know her beers very well, and I was a bit disappointed as a customer they could not give me a 12oz pour. They won't allow samples, which I get however seems silly because they are plastic cups and can be tossed! Not sure I will go back. They have a really nice set up outside and inside!
google avatar

S F.

Yelp
I loved the double IPA's that I tried. All of them were delicious. They allow dogs which is precious to adore while you're drinking some good brews. The inside was relaxing as well.
google avatar

Abigail D.

Yelp
Cool little brewery tucked in the friendly confines of Bridgman. The owner is always at the counter to greet you and is super friendly. Great beer selection. Small little patio but it's never too crowded so usually can always get a seat. Best kept secret if Bridgman I'd say!
google avatar

Tara A.

Yelp
I'm lucky enough to live walking distance away from this place...it's fantastic! It has become very popular amongst both locals and visitors alike! There is a wide range of brews to sample, which doesn't disappoint. I know some people complain of it's smaller building location, but I personally love what they've done with the place... I give it a five stars because the beer is that good, there is usually a line out the door of people waiting to sample the goodness. You have to try it!
google avatar

Ted W.

Yelp
Now in Bridgman, MI this brewery has got it right. There is a good variety of beers, all of them are delicious, and it's a fun laid-back atmosphere. If you are in the area put this on your list of to do's.

Katie S.

Yelp
Great spot! They allow dogs which is a huge win in my book. Excellent beer. Came here on a Sunday and stayed for almost three hours. You can bring in food from another restaurant no problem. I'm from Chicago but would recommend to any travelers or locals. Would return!
google avatar

Al L.

Yelp
Great beer selection and staff. Went here to grab a couple beers in the afternoon and we really enjoyed the space. They allow dogs inside and outside which was awesome. You know if a place is dog friendly then they have great ownership . I'll be back for sure!
google avatar

Carri C.

Yelp
Really cool place. We tried the Buck, which I think was an imperial stout. Outstanding. The tap room is a garage. They clearly have their priorities straight--focus on the quality of the beer. They are surely on par with the best: Green Bush, Revolution, and Half Acre. Most of the people there were beer geeks, which I thought was great. Absolutely worth checking out if you like craft beers.
google avatar

Chris K.

Yelp
Really good quality beers. Didn't have time to stay and try as much as I would of liked to but the 3 beers I had were awesome NE Style hazy IPAS. Had the Juice is Loose but like Mind to Devour better. Friendly service for sure. Only constructive criticism Id have is there was a strange smell lingering even outside in the parking lot as well as inside the brewery not sure if that's something that is always present or just a one time thing. Cheers
google avatar

Phil M.

Yelp
Great beer, enjoyable environment, and friendly employees. No food available, so plan accordingly.
google avatar

Brian B.

Yelp
Such a great small brewery, sours on tap and in bottles.. perfect hangout spot with plenty of space and a small out door area.
