18 Best Greenville, South Carolina, Restaurants | Eater Carolinas

"This Belgian beer bar sits below street level, under what was Barley’s for decades, but is now the Draper. Reservations feel mandatory at Trappe Door to secure a dimly lit table in the dining room, but stalking the bar for a choice walk-up seat is a favorite pastime for locals. Bottled beer numbers around 100, organized by type or region, including select Trappist beers. There are at least 15 draft offerings, too. Cocktails pair well with mussels and frites, like the White and Blue, with a broth of white ale, blue cheese, bacon, and Dijon. A short rib with shaved creamed Brussels is a great order, especially during colder months. Open seven nights a week, Trappe Door solves Greenville’s Monday problem." - Stephanie Burnette

Incredible food in a fantastic and unique atmosphere. Service was excellent and the servers suggestions were spot on to our palettes. I has the Steak Frites and it was one of the best steaks I've had in Greenville, SC. The only critique I have is that their fries are, perhaps intentionally, bland. A small bit of salt and pepper would do wonders for them but I suspect this might intentional as they provide 3 unique sauces of your choosing for dipping. Get a reservation and go enjoy this incredible restaurant!

Google
A real authentic Belgian experience. We come here every time we find ourselves in Greenville SC. A somewhat nondescript entrance, you descent into the dimly lit basement and be surrounded by the buzz. Food and beer are great! We feel like we are in Belgium!

Google
The food was amazing. It was bursting with flavors! The atmosphere is pretty cool. Love the wood and brick features. The service was adequate, however we were asked multiple times if they could clear a plate, or if we wanted a box, when we were only halfway done eating. That was a bit frustrating. I'll go back. The food alone is worth a return trip.

Google
This is a fantastic place, the food, the ambiance, our server Abby, all was great! I highly recommend to take beef tartare (to die for) ♥️ I ordered salmon it was cooked to perfection and my hubby ordered ribs, very tender and tasty, highly recommend!

Google
My favorite restaurant of all time. I dream about this food every day. The flemish onion soup and veg pasta were amazing. Staff were also super nice, and I loved the aesthetic of the restaurant. When you first walk in, it's surprising to face a staircase, but go down the stairs and you will fall in love instantly. I can't wait to come back.

Google
Saw this place on Eater. Very cool basement establishment. Great ambiance with thoughtful decor that was true to the name. A Belgian beer establishment. We had the mussels and fries, steam frites and fish and chips. All of them delivered. Our Irish server was knowledgeable, friendly and helpful with suggestions. 10/10

Google
Sat at the bar. Place was packed on a Tuesday evening. Bartender was extremely knowledgeable about the various beers on tap, including some very rare ones and also the menu offerings. Instead of the usual white wine and garlic mussels, I tried their coconut curry version. It was fantastic with good plump mussels. Followed that with the duck breast sautéed in Lindeman's Framboise. Cooked to a perfect medium rare, it was a ten in both flavor and presentation. Each beer was served properly and tasted fresh. There are tons of places that have great beer and equally as many that have great food, but to find both w/ the atmosphere this place has is something else indeed. Thou shalt not use "gem" or "yummy" in restaurant reviews.

Google
On the last night of my wife's and my trip to Greenville, we had a sublime dining experience at Trappe Door! We absolutely loved the warm atmosphere and friendly service. They have an expansive collection of Belgian beers (try a Trappist!) and their food was positively delectable. Reserve a table in advance, because they fill up fast! It is definitely worth the cost and wait.

Yelp
It has amazing drinks. They have Great service and food . I love the atmosphere because it is soft and quiet.

Yelp
Visiting Greenville for work and wanted to treat myself to a hearty dinner. I called ahead of time and they had availability for one within 15 mins. I thought they would seat me at the bar but I got a nice seat where I could see all the hustle and bustle. It's a really cool and exclusive-vibes atmosphere, with an extensive beer selection. Ordered the braised short rib and it did not disappoint! The brussels were creamy which I've never experienced before. The short rib and mashed potato were prepared perfectly. I could not finish the plate in one sitting so I took a mini meal to go. If I was in the mood to eat fries I definitely would have tried the fish and chips! Hoping I get to visit Greenville and The Trappe Door again soon!

Yelp
My husband and I went to the Trappe Door for our date night - make sure to get those reservations ahead of time. Our first attempt at eating here without reservations didn't pan out, so we made them 3 weeks in advance. I love the cozy, dark atmosphere of the restaurant. It feels almost like a secret hiding spot. I was enamored with the place, peeking around and had a good laugh with the bathroom decor. Our waitress was friendly and let us take our time deciding on drinks and dinner. My husband went with the fish and chips and I ordered the steak and chips. I was not expecting the amount of perfectly, crispy fries as I was given. My husband tried stealing some under the guise of "you're never going to eat all that!" I said "watch me" and did. It was a regret for another time, but honestly, they were some of the best fries I've ever had. The steak was cooked perfectly as well. We cannot wait to go back!

Yelp
Hands down the best food I had in town during Greenville trip. Get their moules frites with truffle mayo as one of the dipping sauce option and you won't be disappointed. If you are visiting here or nearby, come check this place out. Will most likely need reservation in advance though as it appears to be very popular.

Yelp
Top 5 favorite meals I've had. I got the steak frites and I can't stop talking about how good it was 2 weeks later. Moscow mule was pretty good, but think im just not a big M.M. girl. Cool vibe under ground and would be a great date spot. Kinda pricey but worth it

Yelp
Was recommended by a friend, Such an amazing place! Definitely a hidden gem. At first I wasn't sure if it was open because the outside was empty but once you open the door and go downstairs it's a different story. There's a dark ambiance that reminds you of a German bar and i loved it. The food was delicious and the portions are big which is a bonus. Would definitely come again and highly recommend.

Lynne E.

Yelp
Good, service, atmosphere all great. Loud bc it's downstairs. If you are disabled, please know there are a lot of steps to get downstairs.

Yelp
The food was fantastic. Service was equally good as well. The ambience was very intimate and enjoyable with friends. Highly recommend.

Yelp
I would give 3.5 stars if possible. Trappe Door has been one of our favorites since we moved to Greenville 3 years ago, We almost always order the steak frites. The fries are crispy with creative mayo options for dipping although a bit salty. The steak is perfectly cooked and tender, but heavily salted. The prices keep increasing almost every entree has increased by $4 since our last visit in March. I think it's still worth a visit, but no longer at the top of my list.

Yelp
Comfort food at its finest and good service! Thanks and we look forward to our next visit.

Yelp
I didn't like the smell in there. It smelled like old, mildew, mixed with wet dog. I wouldn't have ate there if I wasn't tryna be a good sport for my BF, just based off the intial walk in. The selection of liquor at the bar is very minimal. Didn't order a drink bc of it. However, I ordered the short rib it was really good. My BF got the ribeye and we love ribeye for the fat but the fat on this steak was extremely excessive and chewy. Very gross. He didn't enjoy his meal. The service was cool and my food was good is the reason they get 2 stars.

Yelp
I was blown away by this restaurant. The drinks are amazing. The appetizers are delicious and dinner was unbelievable. The service at the bar and in the dining area was great. The ambiance is moody and romantic.

Yelp
A great spot for wholesome meals and beer especially belgian style. Had the stew on this visit and it was very good. Almost tempted to order another serving.

Yelp
This is our absolute favorite restaurant in Greenville. The food, atmosphere and drinks are truly special. The staff is very attentive and knowledgeable with a great personality.

Yelp
This place was the bomb. First off, the atmosphere is unmatched. You start your journey going down a flight of stairs into a dark like dungeon, questioning if your in the right place. To our surprise, we were welcomed by friendly staff awaiting our arrival. I went ahead with the streak frites, as everyone has marveled about this dish. I got the ribeye, served with their peppercorn topping. Let me tell you, this steak did not disappoint. Every bite melted, and just when I thought it couldn't get better, each bite did. Not only this, but the portion was gigantic. I have to admit this is definitely a top 5 steak I've had and would highly recommend anyone looking to indulge in cow. Deuces.

Yelp
The food here is outstanding! We started with the pastry-wrapped brie, serviced with green apple slices and honey-glazed pecans. We dove right into this dish before I managed to get a photo of it, lol. It was creamy, savory, and well balanced with a touch of sweet from the framboise drizzled on top. For my main I had the mussels and frites, both yummy. The golden crispy-coated fries paired perfectly with the mussels. You have a choice of several sauces for the mussels which was novel and fun. I went with the "white and Bleu" and learned blue cheese and bacon perfectly compliment mussels. The selection of Belgium beers (a few tap choices and a lot of bottled choices) is excellent. The place is reminiscent of old European taverns. It's pretty dark inside so if you're of a certain age, you'll need to whip out that cell phone in order to read the menu.

Yelp
I had been looking forward to trying the Trappe Door & it did not disappoint. It was a busy night, so I grabbed a seat at the bar in this underground establishment, and was immediately engaged by the 2 friendly & knowledgeable bartenders. Banter about their substantial Belgian/Trappist beer offerings (wine & cocktail options also abound) yielded some new tasty discoveries. The Flemish Onion Soup was rich and deep in flavor, much different than a French Onion Soup. The Beef Tartare was a great 1st course to complement the amazing Sautéed Duck Breast with cherry reduction entree. Of course I couldn't leave without trying the mussels & frites. They offer choices of prep & dipping sauces, and I went with the traditional white wine/garlic/shallots, which was a delicious way to cap off the meal. This place was worth the wait, but it won't be long until I return.

Yelp
Great staff - fabulous food and drink - cozy and relaxing environment. Highly recommend.

Yelp
The Trappe Door provides a great dining experience. The Steak Frites is unmatched. The flavor and the tenderness of the meat is delicious. Gina, our server, provided excellent service to our table. Her smile and attention to the details added to our experience. We visit Greenville on a regular basis from Charlotte NC. Thanks for another great meal.

Yelp
Food and service was fantastic. The ambiance is rustic and romantic. Get a reservation if you to ensure a table. A definite must if you are in Greenville.

Yelp
Came for a dinner reservation and ordered beers, appetizers, and mussels. 30 minutes after being seated, server informed us that kitchen was now out of mussels. Member of our party with dietary requirements couldn't eat anything else on the menu, but we said we'd still stay for the beers and appetizers we had ordered, which hadn't arrived by that point. Server spilled half a $10 beer on the floor while pouring. After we'd been there 45 minutes, we gave up and asked for the check, then appetizers finally came out. Those were good, for what it's worth. No discounts offered on anything. We passed by everyone else enjoying their mussels to leave hungry, disappointed, and angry.

Yelp
One of my absolute favorites. Love the flavored mustards and the muscles. We recently took two out of town friends and they were impressed

Yelp
This place is excellent! I highly recommend trying them. The downstairs vibe is really unique. You feel like you are entering an old warehouse full of crates and barrels. The menu is unique and the food is delicious. I love the fries with your choice of 3 dipping sauces! The burgers are mouthwatering and all their food options are delicious. I've been here multiple times since I'm local and never was disappointed. I took a group from work here, all out of towners, and they loved it. It's a unique spot you don't want to miss!

Yelp
Nice lol Belgian bar restaurant with all the Belgian beer spirits and food one could want! We didn't have reservations (and I would recommend you make them for sure) but there was seating at their bar either full service from their menu! I was thoroughly entertained by the mixologist doing their thang! they were in constant motion pouring brew after brew of expertly mixing drinks The hubby ordered the steak frites with 3 diff mayo based sauces - IT WAS GOOD! And I opted for the crispy duck with asparagus also delish! The real star was the appetizer mushroom vol a rent I think it was rich and garlicky with mushrooms butter n onions in a puff pastry vessel! Can we say yum! The staff was fantastic making sure our water glass was always full and checking back on our experience!
google avatar

Tess B.

Yelp
My steak was thick and juicy with just the right amount of char. The sides were fresh and well portioned. I also liked the wine list they offered to go along with the meal. The staff knew the menu well and made great suggestions. The whole vibe felt calm and welcoming.

Kaitlyn B.

Yelp
Friday night there was a 30 minute wait for a table, was supposed to get a call when a table was ready, but they didn't call and there were multiple tables available when we went back down. Service was good besides that. Enjoyed the atmosphere, it felt like an experience more than just a meal. The food was delicious as well! I had the cherry sausages!

Yelp
While visiting Greenville over the weekend, The Trappe Door was listed as one of the top places for dinner. It's located right downtown, very close to Main Street, great location. When you walk in you go down the stairs to the hostess stand. It's dark, but has charm. It was pretty busy on a Saturday night around 7:30. The vibe is interesting, cozy and rustic, I'd say. I sat at the bar as I was by myself. Mandy & Scarlet were both super friendly and Mandy helped me pick the perfect mussel broth. I ordered a cocktail although they are know for beer and bourbon. The mussels were absolutely delicious!! Although I didn't drink the broth, I wanted to save it to make a pasta dish. It was the one with the bacon, feta and mustard, soooo tasty. The serving was perfect as my meal as I had been eating around downtown Greenville all day, and wasn't super hungry, but had to try it.

Yelp
My first time here though I've been in the area 13 years. Worth the wait. Great beer selection and my wife had one of their Moscow mules, which was delicious apparently due to the lavender bitters I had the curried mussel dish along with the "frites" Dozen or more flavored mayonnaise s was a nice treat. It was very busy even on a weeknight and the service was very good. Wish the menu had a little bit more variety, but that's what return visits are for :-)

K M.

Yelp
The only reason I gave two stars is because the service was good. The food was less than average at best. My husband ordered the steak with pepper sauce WELL DONE. The steak was rare at best and he had no sauce. None. We asked the waiter and he didn't have any idea what the steak with pepper sauce was supposed to look like. My husband is from Belgium and the food was a complete disappointment. This restaurant should not call itself a Belgium restaurant.

Yelp
What an excellent meal!!! I came here for dinner with my partner and her grandparents, and we all loved the food and the atmosphere. A member of our party was gluten free, and our server was incredibly accommodating and helpful in recommending some gluten free options. I highly recommend the baked brie appetizer and the duck as an entree! Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
My wife and I scheduled a five-day trip to Greenville.  It was our first time in the city.  We were here for one business meeting and the rest of the time to relax. For our first dinner we chose The Trappe Door, a Belgian restaurant located below ground in a space designed to look like an old European pub/tavern. Our server Sierra did a great job helping us pick some favorites off the menu.  To start we tried their version of Beef Tartare.  Served on tasty crostinis with a lemon pesto it paired perfectly with Westmalle Dubbel beer and Getrank Veltliner wine. We followed the beef with a Flemish Onion Soup.  Unlike its French cousin, this soup had a puree potatoe base with small pieces of bread and gruyere cheese.  We liked this version which was much lighter than what people expect from onion soup despite the potatoes. We kept focusing on the appetizers and tried the Baked Brie.  The cheese was beautifully wrapped in a puff pastry and served on a framboise reduction.  I had to ask what that was, but your taste bads will answer, sweet and savory goodness.  Apple slices, crackers and honey glazed pecans served as accoutrements. We finished our meal by sharing the Sautéed Duck Breast that was drizzled with a cherry beer sauce and served with shallot and bacon-diced potatoes and asparagus.  The asparagus was the size of California Redwood trees, but the potatoes were cooked perfectly and soaked up the leftover cherry sauce.  Paired the duck with a Kasteel Donker Quad. Sierra's service was excellent despite being very busy on a Tuesday night.  Ask for her and she will help you maximize your experience.  If you have a free night in town check this place out over others who get more hype.

Yelp
Amazing beer selection great Belgian food. I had a Flanders brown Ale & the mushroom tart : delicious! Love the Cellar Decor & ambience.

Meredith S.

Yelp
Food was absolutely delicious. We unfortunately failed to make a reservation so we were stuck at the bar. My only complaint is that I wish the bar could have been more spacious. We felt a little claustrophobic. Other than that I would definitely go again, but make a reservation for a table.
google avatar

Dani D.

Yelp
This is by far one of the best places in Greenville. Trappe door is great to bring out of town guests or to have an intimate dinner. Somehow, this spaces accomplishes it all. Located under the street level the vibe is cozy. Not to mention the several beers on tap and the AMAZING food. I always opt for the duck but I've also tried the steak (10/10), the meatball, and the muscle and frits. Be sure to get a reservation well in advance. Otherwise you're eating dinner at 4pm or 9:30pm.

Lindsay H.

Yelp
I would love to give this place 2.5 stars. We ate here 3 years ago and weren't impressed but tried them again tonight. Still unimpressed. Positives: mussels are a big size Flavored mayos are tasty Provencale and Curry mussels have good flavor Negatives: Mussel portion is deceiving. All 3 of our orders had at least 10 closed and cracking mussels at the bottom of our pots. Mariniere mussels are BLAND Steak was extremely tough and over salted. We could barely cut it with their "steak knives". An Outback steak would have been more tender. This restaurant is constantly highly rated but I would not recommend. Two strikes and you're out.

Yelp
We came here a few years ago and remember having a wonderful experience. We live in Charlotte so being back in town after a while we were very excited to come back. I understand as a vegetarian my options might be limited, but one of the things I most fondly remember from my first visit is being delighted by having several unique and delicious sounding options to choose from. I guess the menu has changed since then and this time I was very disappointed to see zero entrees and only 2 appetizers that are veg. Even the salads all come with meat in them. We still love the vibe of this place, and the pasta I ended up getting , though cold, was pretty good, but kinda boring since the star of the show which I had to omit was the sausage. This is why I hate having to modify things and wish restaurants would just acknowledge that not everyone eats meat and stop treating veg options as an afterthought.

Michael O.

Yelp
Food, service, and setting were great. Noise level was very loud. Expect that as it is a very popular pub. Excellent selections of beers to accompany the well prepared meals. Never disappoints!
google avatar

Justin M.

Yelp
Laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamee Terrible staff. Mediocre food. Came in from Asheville after the hurricane and we were treated like trash. I've been here before. Never again
google avatar

Justin B.

Yelp
We loved the food and amazing service! I highly recommend it; can't wait to go back to Greenville to go again!

Julie T.

Yelp
The Trappe Door is a must see place to visit! It's in the basement, but it's very unique. The Braised Short Rib was the best I've ever eaten. Our waitress was pleasant and attentive. The restaurant is very nice and iconic. You defined reservations!
google avatar

Faith P.

Yelp
Went for a double date night/birthday dinner and it was great! We got steaks and they were cooked to perfection, our friends got muscle pots and we all loved them! Servers are very attentive and quick we will definitely be back
google avatar

Kaye K.

Yelp
We felt like we were back in Europe as soon as we descended the stairs of the Trappe Door. Absolute perfection across all metrics: service, menu selection, ambiance, and the food quality and taste! Best steak frites ever!

James R.

Yelp
Food was great we had the muscles. Drinks were excellent. I would suggest making a reservation. But as luck would have it, we sat at the bar when the chairs became available.

john s.

Yelp
Never disappoints. Warm professional hospitality, with a strong smart menu that holds up over time.

Yelp
Belgian restaurant with soooo many drink options and AMAZING food. The steak was 10/5 stars best i've had in a while. Service was great. Definitely recommend.
google avatar

Kris D.

Yelp
Back at the Trappe Door despite the less than stellar showing last time. This time all of their draught beers were either warm or foamy - wild card! Something about the lines being broken and not chilling properly. Curry mussels were yummy and the fries were good (not at all like last time). Sat at the bar and the service was so so great Courtney made our night! We'll be back for sure...maybe even tomorrow since we're in Gville for the weekend.
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
Good, no, great service. Really loud. Food was ok but not wow'ed. Great location and I will give this place another try!
google avatar

Eric H.

Yelp
This was a great spot, with good food and friendly staff. It feels like you've stumbled on a secret as you head downstairs and discover the rustic dining room. There was only room at the bar for my party of one, but the seats were comfortable and the bartenders were excellent. I had the steak frites with the NY strip. This feels very much like Belgian or French and American fusion, and it all works well. The fries were very French-like. The truffle mayo for dipping was my favorite of the three I tried, roasted garlic was actually bland, and the citrus had a great lime flavor. I went with the au poivre for my steak and was not disappointed. The meat was by far the highlight, tender, perfectly cooked, with a great taste. The price for a steak dinner and drink was totally reasonable too. Definitely a spot to try.
google avatar

Natalie S.

Yelp
I went with my family to this place and the food was exceptional. I had a vegetarian pasta, cold at first, but it was ok after it was heated up and the fries and mayonnaise was amazing. It did take a LONG TIME but was worth the wait. Cute little restaurant and I loved how dark and moody it was but it was hard to see the menu. The reason I had to unfortunately leave a 3 start was due to the terrible service. Our waiter though nice was never around. ESPECIALLY when we needed her. Please improve, I don't want my service to ruin future visits. Food: GREAT Ambiance: Ok Service: TERRIBLE 3 star
