18 Best Greenville, South Carolina, Restaurants | Eater Carolinas

"This Belgian beer bar sits below street level, under what was Barley’s for decades, but is now the Draper. Reservations feel mandatory at Trappe Door to secure a dimly lit table in the dining room, but stalking the bar for a choice walk-up seat is a favorite pastime for locals. Bottled beer numbers around 100, organized by type or region, including select Trappist beers. There are at least 15 draft offerings, too. Cocktails pair well with mussels and frites, like the White and Blue, with a broth of white ale, blue cheese, bacon, and Dijon. A short rib with shaved creamed Brussels is a great order, especially during colder months. Open seven nights a week, Trappe Door solves Greenville’s Monday problem." - Stephanie Burnette

Author Jeff VanderMeer’s Grub Street Diet

"A spot for indulgent, hearty plates exemplified by an expansive charcuterie selection—duck prosciutto, salami, tomme, Red Dragon, Seahive, several chutneys, pickled vegetables, honeycomb, strawberries, marinated olives, grilled ciabatta and crackers—which the author devours, and a reserve bottle of barrel-aged Chimay Red that complements the mood of calculated excess." - Paula Aceves, Margalit Cutler

Google
My coworker recommended this place, and it definitely lives up to the hype. The atmosphere is fantastic, you really feel like you’ve stepped into a Belgian brewery. The food was excellent; the chicken schnitzel was incredibly tender and delicious, and the Brussels sprouts had a nice mix of bacon and flavorful notes from the salad underneath. I tried a hot toddy and an old fashioned, both of which were great. I’ll definitely be back to try the mussels I saw people ordering at the bar.

Google
Fantastic food. We loved the Bitterballen, Ndouja pasta, and the fries. The fries were absolutely perfect and I really enjoyed the dipping sauces . Our hostess was also very kind and informative. Learned a bit about ales while I was there and discovered something new I like! I kind of wish we were seated further away from the kitchen due to noise, but it didn’t really impact our experience that much at all. I’d definitely recommend going for a nice occasion.

Google
We visited Greenville for the weekend and found this place while walking around. It was one of my favorite spots here. The environment was cozy and the food was delicious. What really made the experience incredible was the quality and character of the bartenders. Thanks for the experience. Till next time!

Google
This is a great place. A must go to in Greenville. Belgian Pilsner beer Wild Mushroom Vol-Au-Vent Seasonal wild mushrooms cooked in a white wine and garlic cream sauce served in a puff pastry boat Braised Short Ribs Leek mashed potatoes and creamy brussel sprouts

Google
The food, service and atmosphere were phenomenal. We had the Baked Brie and Beef Tartare to start, both awesome. Entrees were braised short ribs with creamy brussel sprouts (these were really impressive); wife got the sautéed duck breast in cherry sauce with PHENOMENAL bacon diced potatoes. I was jealous. I’m not super into Belgian-inspired beers, but they had a ton to choose from if that’s your jam! I would highly recommend this place purely on service, the food, and ambiance.

Google
Previous 5 star review.,,,, not even close this go round. We visit Greenville annually and we have had exceptional food here in the past. This time we made reservations and were very disappointed. People that were seated after us got 5heir food and we waited an hour to get our orders. Food was mediocre at best after waiting after reservations. Will not make a point to attend this place again.

Google
Didn’t expect Belgian food in Greenville, SC but it happened and I’m glad. We walked down the stairs to the carmine colored walls and bar area and found two seats at the bar. Ordered the house made ginger beer. For apps we tried the beef croquets and Flemish onion soup. Would order the croquets again but not the soup. Then main course shared moules-frites (mussels and French fries) with three different types of mayo. Heaven.

Google
Had an amazing experience here! Love the moody dungeon vibes, it felt like I was in Europe. I sat at the bar and enjoyed a beet salad + mussels. Both were generous portions. Brayden was an excellent bartender, super attentive and a fun personality.

Yelp
The Trappe Door has a warm, underground vibe that makes the whole experience feel special. The staff was welcoming and checked on us just the right amount. Our dishes came out hot and nicely presented--especially the mussels and the fries, which were standouts. A few items were a bit heavier than expected, but that's part of the style. Overall, the food was comforting, the drinks were solid, and the atmosphere made it a great place to relax. I'd happily come back and try more of the menu.

Yelp
Another flawless meal! Our favorite Greenville restaurant! Shawn took great care of us. We savored Trappist ales. Had the beef and cheese appetizer. Deliciousness! We each had the filet mignon. Far superior to any other filets we've had in town. Finished with the chocolate dessert. Perfect dinner experience!

Yelp
Always visit this restaurant when we are in Greenville. Cool place to hang at bar - seems like a local hangout too. Food is good. Usually really good charcuterie boards with Interesting cheese and meats. Service always good whether at bar or table. Dark decor and cool vibes.

Yelp
When in Greenville, my husband and I had a wonderful meal at The Trappe Door. One of his friends who is a local but spent time in Belgium recommended it to us. I do recommend making a reservation ahead of time, arriving when they open (at 5 PM), or planning to sit at the bar. We started with the Wild mushroom vol-au-vent ($13) appetizer, which was rich and delicious- definitely not your ordinary mushrooms, and I loved the puff pastry. I had the Pan seared salmon ($28) for my entree and loved how the flavors blended together, especially the marinated tomato salad. My husband had the Provencal Mussels, which came with a huge piece of bread on top for soaking (although I wish you could order an extra bread because he needed it). This dish also came with a side of fries. When you order fries here, you get the choice of three creative flavored mayonnaise options. You can opt for ketchup if you're less adventurous. Although our food did take awhile to come out, the service was good and our waiter checked on us multiple times. It was rather busy so as I mentioned earlier, make a reservation and don't be in a hurry. The bar has a huge selection of Belgian and European beers, as well as mixed drinks and some NA options. For parking, there is a surface lot next door and a garage across the street. Parking is thankfully cheap in downtown Greenville (and free after certain hours).

Yelp
I had a stellar experience at Trappe Door for my birthday. The vibe is amazingly cool and such a great spot for any kind of event or night out. The food was truly delicious. We had a mussel pot with fries that had more mussels than two of us could finish. I had sautéed duck breast that I won't forget anytime soon. It was flavorful and cooked to absolute perfection. The restaurant is unique and different from so many others that it's something I would definitely recommend everyone try at least once!

Yelp
My friend and I met up for dinner here and enjoyed the sausages and pasta! We tried the wasabi, curry, and truffle mayo (all of which were amazing). Our waitress helped us decide which ones to order and was attentive throughout our meal. The restaurant is located in downtown Greenville underground. It has a neat ambiance with booth, table, and bar seating. This was my second visit here and I got the pasta both times because of how good it was! The fries are a must as they are a key part of the experience. The shredded Brussel sprouts that came with the sausages were mind blowing in taste. So good and unique.
google avatar

Travis T.

Yelp
The Flemish onion soup was delicious. The seafood waterzooi was a bit salty and the shrimp was a little overcooked, but otherwise decent. That stew also appeared to be Americanized since it has more things in it and served with bread which was not the case when I visited Belgium. The inside had a old-world Belgian vibe since it's located below street level.
google avatar

Molly D.

Yelp
This was a great restaurant. The food was great. We really enjoyed the beet salad and the steak was amazing. My husband liked the sausages! The service was great and the drinks were amazing. Love the ambiance! So cool!
google avatar

Lindsay J.

Yelp
Update: The schnitzel is back on the menu!! All is right with the world. It's a smaller serving now, but still delicious.
google avatar

Matt T.

Yelp
I wanted to love it. Its my kind of place. The bartender was wonderful and the beer amazing. Unfortunately my food was incorrect, but it took sooooo long to arrive, that I ate it anyway. I ordered the steak frites (NY strip) and received a ribeye instead. Not a huge deal, but also not my preference. The frites were very good too. I would come back for another try, but probably order something else.

Yelp
Visiting Greenville for work and wanted to treat myself to a hearty dinner. I called ahead of time and they had availability for one within 15 mins. I thought they would seat me at the bar but I got a nice seat where I could see all the hustle and bustle. It's a really cool and exclusive-vibes atmosphere, with an extensive beer selection. Ordered the braised short rib and it did not disappoint! The brussels were creamy which I've never experienced before. The short rib and mashed potato were prepared perfectly. I could not finish the plate in one sitting so I took a mini meal to go. If I was in the mood to eat fries I definitely would have tried the fish and chips! Hoping I get to visit Greenville and The Trappe Door again soon!

Yelp
Food service and Belgian Beer solution... The ambiance was excellent also, the surroundings remind me of an old Belgian Beer bar. It's located in the basement level. Would recommend reservation for sure. It was packed on a Friday evening... Miriam our server was very attentive.
google avatar

Tim J.

Yelp
Hands down the best food I had in town during Greenville trip. Get their moules frites with truffle mayo as one of the dipping sauce option and you won't be disappointed. If you are visiting here or nearby, come check this place out. Will most likely need reservation in advance though as it appears to be very popular.

Yelp
Feel like I'm in the basement of an abbey getting some home brewed Belgian beer. It's fun! I highly recommend the cherry sausages, it's solid and you'll have some leftovers. Beef tartare is awesome too. Haven't had as much luck with the other dishes but to be honest I haven't tried many

Michael R.

Yelp
This was largely a disappointment for us. It does have the warm underground vibe so often mentioned. However, I would call it claustrophobic as diners are literally on top of each other. Upon being seated a fight nearly broke out with two tables to my right. One of the wife/gf's was able to calm it down thankfully. From what I gathered an off comment was overheard. Not surprised given your basically dining with strangers. Our waiter was good but overwhelmed and the drinks were late in coming. Not his fault but still. I had cherry sausages, mashed with shredded brussels. The mashed and gravy was good, but everything else was surprisingly bland. My date has the mussels and fries, that was really good, there was plenty to share. There were no descriptions of the different beers, so I ended up just guessing and was disappointed in my choice. That happens but it the disappointment was piling up. The next couple to be seated on the other side of us, was loud. We heard every comment. It was a first date and there was plenty of nervous anxiety to go around. Their charcuterie board looked pretty good and they seemed happy with it. It's a popular place with really good reviews but I can't recommend it. We probably won't go back but I'm truly glad so many others had a positive experience.

Edward T.

Yelp
Chose the Trappe Door for a business dinner with my bosses, and although TD has been a fave of mine for a long time it was great to share it. The food was fantastic as always - and our server was not only great at what he did, but a fun guy as well. Gave us some laughs and chuckles but in no way was he overbearing. The vibe in TD is always very comforting and truly replicates a European pub feel.. absolutely live this place.
google avatar

Joshua H.

Yelp
We were lucky to get a last minute reservation on a Monday. The place was very busy, but the service was great. They have a wide selection of beers, and our server was really helpful in describing the options. Food was excellent, and we had a great experience.
google avatar

Yelp
My husband and I went to the Trappe Door for our date night - make sure to get those reservations ahead of time. Our first attempt at eating here without reservations didn't pan out, so we made them 3 weeks in advance. I love the cozy, dark atmosphere of the restaurant. It feels almost like a secret hiding spot. I was enamored with the place, peeking around and had a good laugh with the bathroom decor. Our waitress was friendly and let us take our time deciding on drinks and dinner. My husband went with the fish and chips and I ordered the steak and chips. I was not expecting the amount of perfectly, crispy fries as I was given. My husband tried stealing some under the guise of "you're never going to eat all that!" I said "watch me" and did. It was a regret for another time, but honestly, they were some of the best fries I've ever had. The steak was cooked perfectly as well. We cannot wait to go back!
google avatar

Christopher B.

Yelp
A staple of the Greenville foodie scene. One of the first places to offer high-gravity Belgian beers. Menu selection and food quality are consistently excellent. Solidly recommend.

David B.

Yelp
great mussels, excellent beer, good service , good ambience. Need to go early to get a spor
google avatar

Yelp
Our favorite go to restaurant downtown! We love the fries, steak, Brussels sprouts and fish and chips!
google avatar

Brianna S.

Yelp
Was recommended by a friend, Such an amazing place! Definitely a hidden gem. At first I wasn't sure if it was open because the outside was empty but once you open the door and go downstairs it's a different story. There's a dark ambiance that reminds you of a German bar and i loved it. The food was delicious and the portions are big which is a bonus. Would definitely come again and highly recommend.
google avatar

Robert A.

Yelp
The food was fantastic. Service was equally good as well. The ambience was very intimate and enjoyable with friends. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Keng L.

Yelp
A great spot for wholesome meals and beer especially belgian style. Had the stew on this visit and it was very good. Almost tempted to order another serving.
google avatar

Daisy C.

Yelp
Top 5 favorite meals I've had. I got the steak frites and I can't stop talking about how good it was 2 weeks later. Moscow mule was pretty good, but think im just not a big M.M. girl. Cool vibe under ground and would be a great date spot. Kinda pricey but worth it
google avatar

Ty Q.

Yelp
Comfort food at its finest and good service! Thanks and we look forward to our next visit.

Yelp
The food here is outstanding! We started with the pastry-wrapped brie, serviced with green apple slices and honey-glazed pecans. We dove right into this dish before I managed to get a photo of it, lol. It was creamy, savory, and well balanced with a touch of sweet from the framboise drizzled on top. For my main I had the mussels and frites, both yummy. The golden crispy-coated fries paired perfectly with the mussels. You have a choice of several sauces for the mussels which was novel and fun. I went with the "white and Bleu" and learned blue cheese and bacon perfectly compliment mussels. The selection of Belgium beers (a few tap choices and a lot of bottled choices) is excellent. The place is reminiscent of old European taverns. It's pretty dark inside so if you're of a certain age, you'll need to whip out that cell phone in order to read the menu.

Yelp
I had been looking forward to trying the Trappe Door & it did not disappoint. It was a busy night, so I grabbed a seat at the bar in this underground establishment, and was immediately engaged by the 2 friendly & knowledgeable bartenders. Banter about their substantial Belgian/Trappist beer offerings (wine & cocktail options also abound) yielded some new tasty discoveries. The Flemish Onion Soup was rich and deep in flavor, much different than a French Onion Soup. The Beef Tartare was a great 1st course to complement the amazing Sautéed Duck Breast with cherry reduction entree. Of course I couldn't leave without trying the mussels & frites. They offer choices of prep & dipping sauces, and I went with the traditional white wine/garlic/shallots, which was a delicious way to cap off the meal. This place was worth the wait, but it won't be long until I return.

Dr. F.

Yelp
Make a reservation! (As Yogi Berra said, "No one goes there anymore, the place is always full.") Beef tartare was seasoned well. Baked brie had flavor with a sauce that made it even better. The duck breast was cooked perfectly and well-seasoned. The meatballs were in a class by themselves! Mussels mariniere were what mussels should be. The Nduja sugo with Tortiglione was on the spicy side, but I loved it.And these people make their own sausage. Our vegan had the fried brussel salad and almost converted the rest of us. The fries are outstanding with a variety of mayos and the house made ginger beer had zip! Large portions too! And the best and widest beer menu I've seen in Greenville!
google avatar

Latonya P.

Yelp
Nice lol Belgian bar restaurant with all the Belgian beer spirits and food one could want! We didn't have reservations (and I would recommend you make them for sure) but there was seating at their bar either full service from their menu! I was thoroughly entertained by the mixologist doing their thang! they were in constant motion pouring brew after brew of expertly mixing drinks The hubby ordered the steak frites with 3 diff mayo based sauces - IT WAS GOOD! And I opted for the crispy duck with asparagus also delish! The real star was the appetizer mushroom vol a rent I think it was rich and garlicky with mushrooms butter n onions in a puff pastry vessel! Can we say yum! The staff was fantastic making sure our water glass was always full and checking back on our experience!
google avatar

Suzanne R.

Yelp
This is our absolute favorite restaurant in Greenville. The food, atmosphere and drinks are truly special. The staff is very attentive and knowledgeable with a great personality.
google avatar

Yelp
This place was the bomb. First off, the atmosphere is unmatched. You start your journey going down a flight of stairs into a dark like dungeon, questioning if your in the right place. To our surprise, we were welcomed by friendly staff awaiting our arrival. I went ahead with the streak frites, as everyone has marveled about this dish. I got the ribeye, served with their peppercorn topping. Let me tell you, this steak did not disappoint. Every bite melted, and just when I thought it couldn't get better, each bite did. Not only this, but the portion was gigantic. I have to admit this is definitely a top 5 steak I've had and would highly recommend anyone looking to indulge in cow. Deuces.

Arleen T.

Yelp
Loved this place! Down stairs in basement, this restaurant was super cozy. Went with 2 other ladies. I ordered the short ribs. Best I ever had!! Not greasy, super tender and flavorful. Others had Mussels buckets, which I tasted and they were excellent. Several different ways to get them (sauces). Best frites ever!!! Would definitely recommend!
google avatar

Julie T.

Yelp
The Trappe Door is a must see place to visit! It's in the basement, but it's very unique. The Braised Short Rib was the best I've ever eaten. Our waitress was pleasant and attentive. The restaurant is very nice and iconic. You defined reservations!
google avatar

Pat W.

Yelp
The Trappe Door provides a great dining experience. The Steak Frites is unmatched. The flavor and the tenderness of the meat is delicious. Gina, our server, provided excellent service to our table. Her smile and attention to the details added to our experience. We visit Greenville on a regular basis from Charlotte NC. Thanks for another great meal.
google avatar

Christian B.

Yelp
Cozy spot with a cool underground vibe. The mussels were fresh and flavorful, and the bread on top was perfect for soaking up the sauce. Service was friendly, though a bit slow at times, and it can get busy, so reservations help. Overall, a fun place for Belgian food in Greenville -- worth a visit if you're in town.
google avatar

Kami J.

Yelp
I didn't like the smell in there. It smelled like old, mildew, mixed with wet dog. I wouldn't have ate there if I wasn't tryna be a good sport for my BF, just based off the intial walk in. The selection of liquor at the bar is very minimal. Didn't order a drink bc of it. However, I ordered the short rib it was really good. My BF got the ribeye and we love ribeye for the fat but the fat on this steak was extremely excessive and chewy. Very gross. He didn't enjoy his meal. The service was cool and my food was good is the reason they get 2 stars.
google avatar

Jaime S.

Yelp
While visiting Greenville over the weekend, The Trappe Door was listed as one of the top places for dinner. It's located right downtown, very close to Main Street, great location. When you walk in you go down the stairs to the hostess stand. It's dark, but has charm. It was pretty busy on a Saturday night around 7:30. The vibe is interesting, cozy and rustic, I'd say. I sat at the bar as I was by myself. Mandy & Scarlet were both super friendly and Mandy helped me pick the perfect mussel broth. I ordered a cocktail although they are know for beer and bourbon. The mussels were absolutely delicious!! Although I didn't drink the broth, I wanted to save it to make a pasta dish. It was the one with the bacon, feta and mustard, soooo tasty. The serving was perfect as my meal as I had been eating around downtown Greenville all day, and wasn't super hungry, but had to try it.
google avatar

Andriea S.

Yelp
I would give 3.5 stars if possible. Trappe Door has been one of our favorites since we moved to Greenville 3 years ago, We almost always order the steak frites. The fries are crispy with creative mayo options for dipping although a bit salty. The steak is perfectly cooked and tender, but heavily salted. The prices keep increasing almost every entree has increased by $4 since our last visit in March. I think it's still worth a visit, but no longer at the top of my list.
google avatar

Barry P.

Yelp
My first time here though I've been in the area 13 years. Worth the wait. Great beer selection and my wife had one of their Moscow mules, which was delicious apparently due to the lavender bitters I had the curried mussel dish along with the "frites" Dozen or more flavored mayonnaise s was a nice treat. It was very busy even on a weeknight and the service was very good. Wish the menu had a little bit more variety, but that's what return visits are for :-)

Brian R.

Yelp
Visited Trapped door last night for dinner. Since they have no contact on their site to share issues I decided to leave a review here. Food was great but when my bill came I was blown away. $15 beers! The most I've ever paid for a beer outside of sports venue. Add in a 20 minute mishap on the POS system where they couldn't get mine and my buddy's bills straight followed by an insult from manager, I will not be back. Total bill was $92 for one app, dinner and 4 beers (it was my buddy's 50th so I bought his).

Lynne E.

Yelp
Good, service, atmosphere all great. Loud bc it's downstairs. If you are disabled, please know there are a lot of steps to get downstairs.
google avatar

Scout W.

Yelp
What an excellent meal!!! I came here for dinner with my partner and her grandparents, and we all loved the food and the atmosphere. A member of our party was gluten free, and our server was incredibly accommodating and helpful in recommending some gluten free options. I highly recommend the baked brie appetizer and the duck as an entree! Can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Tess B.

Yelp
My steak was thick and juicy with just the right amount of char. The sides were fresh and well portioned. I also liked the wine list they offered to go along with the meal. The staff knew the menu well and made great suggestions. The whole vibe felt calm and welcoming.
google avatar

Gunnar H.

Yelp
Amazing beer selection great Belgian food. I had a Flanders brown Ale & the mushroom tart : delicious! Love the Cellar Decor & ambience.
google avatar

Jennifer O.

Yelp
Food and service was fantastic. The ambiance is rustic and romantic. Get a reservation if you to ensure a table. A definite must if you are in Greenville.
google avatar

Dani D.

Yelp
This is by far one of the best places in Greenville. Trappe door is great to bring out of town guests or to have an intimate dinner. Somehow, this spaces accomplishes it all. Located under the street level the vibe is cozy. Not to mention the several beers on tap and the AMAZING food. I always opt for the duck but I've also tried the steak (10/10), the meatball, and the muscle and frits. Be sure to get a reservation well in advance. Otherwise you're eating dinner at 4pm or 9:30pm.
google avatar

Liliana P.

Yelp
I was blown away by this restaurant. The drinks are amazing. The appetizers are delicious and dinner was unbelievable. The service at the bar and in the dining area was great. The ambiance is moody and romantic.

Ray W.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere with mediocre food. Service wasn't the best. I asked for a sample of a beer and was broughta full glass.
