On the Grid : Cucina Sorella

"Cucina Sorella opened in 2016 and is, in our opinion, the best restaurant in Kensington and one of the best in the uptown area. With pasta made in-house, a creative drink list, and some of the best salads and sides around, we're delighted to welcome Cucina Sorella to the neighborhood. The roasted cauliflower and mascarpone polenta are must-try dishes. All of their primi and pasta dishes feature interesting and unexpected ingredient pairings that are sure to please even the most distinguished palates. Perfect for a night out with friends or a romantic dinner date, Cucina Sorella has ample indoor and outdoor seating, but be sure to make a reservation! Their bar and prep counter are full-service and are fun if you stop in without a reservation. Their quaint shop at the front of the restaurant is the perfect place to grab a gift for a friend or a unique item for your home." - Noble Intent Studio

40 New Restaurants and Bars That Have Opened in San Diego - Eater San Diego

"Bringing casereccio-style, aka homemade, Italian cuisine to the former Cucina Sorella space, Trattoria Da Sofia is run by a group of young entrepreneurs — Mario Liga, Sofia Lo Cascio, Andrea Carbonaro, Giancarlo Guttilla, Giuseppe Lo Coco, Sebastian Berho, and Franco Mestre — who all have hospitality backgrounds. With decor meant to transport diners to the streets of Italy, the restaurant offers a daily 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. happy hour and a dinner menu that includes homemade meatballs, fried burrata, short rib-stuffed ravioli, and ossobucco." - Candice Woo

I recently had a wonderful dinner at Trattoria da Sofia, and it brought back fond memories of my recent trip to Italy. The food was authentic, flavorful, and prepared with care. Everything I tried was excellent, from the appetizers to the main course. The ambiance was cozy, and the service was attentive, making the dining experience even better. If you're looking for a great Italian restaurant that offers genuine flavours and a true taste of Italy, Trattoria da Sofia is definitely worth a visit!

If I could give more than 5 stars for service I would. Have been here twice since it opened and both times the service was exceptional! Manual was our server both times. Everyone is attentive to your needs but you never feel rushed which is a nice change of pace these days. Food is excellent. We have tried almost all appetizers. The aracini and calamari are my favorites. Also recommend the pesto gnocchi and mushroom/sausage pasta. Will definitely be returning. Happy to have Sofia in the Kensington neighborhood

We had a great time at Trattoria da Sofia! We came with a big party and the service was phenomenal. We shared an appetizer board for the table and got some delicious pasta dishes. The carbonara was my favorite! A great Italian-Sicilian restaurant!

Feels like Florence. As a long time Cucina Sorella fan, Trattoria da Sofia had some big shoes to fill. We really loved the new layout. It is inviting and has a great mix of table options for both larger groups or small parties. The floor is really cool and splits styles partway into the restaurant. We really enjoyed all of our dishes. The beat and fennel salad was well balanced with a ton of flavor. Our favorite dish was the short rib ravioli. It was savory and delicious. Portions were generous and we were happy with the price we paid for our meal. Service was great too. We will definitely be back. Food: 5 Service: 5 Ambiance: 5

Cute place. Started with the burrata fig toast which was delicious. Then enjoyed their handmade pasta - the Pistachiosa and the Spinachini. The pistachio pesto pasta had incredible flavor and creaminess to it, and was a huge portion. The ravioli was also a generous portion, but the main flavor was definitely spinach, so if you aren’t a big spinach fan I’d order something else. The texture of both pastas was just a little too al dente for us, overall. Would have preferred just a tad more soft. But overall good experience, good food, great service & we’ll be back to try more dishes.

I wish we could try everything! We had the eggplant appetizer which was delicious! I would definitely get that. We also got the Cesar salad. I would have liked to see some anchovies on it. It was okay. We had three pasta dishes. My favorite was the seafood one, my least favorite was the pesto. My mother’s favorite was a penne with meat and mushrooms. I forget the names. My 4 year old loves both of those. We got two desserts which were also great. The staff was very friendly and sweet.

We were sad to see Cucina Sorrella close, but now that we've been to Trattoria da Sofia, we are happy again. There are few things I like as much as a good gin and tonic, and the one I had at Sofia was not just good but epic! The bartender, Brandon explained the options and was very knowledgeable about the different gins. The drink was A-MAZING! I recommend the gin mare with elderflower tonic. I also highly recommend the carbonara -- just do it and work out harder tomorrow! We had the Tira misu for dessert. They build it in front of you. No skimping on the mascarpone cream... divine! I will be going back! Give it a try.
