The Best Italian Restaurants in Montreal | Eater Montreal

"Opened in 1973, Trestevere is a downtown institution. Despite its location in an area better known for tacky clubs than fine food, expect a lengthy menu of classic dishes, including spaghetti carbonara, mushroom risotto, and cassata, a sweet Sicilian confection made of sponge cake and ricotta cheese layered with candied fruit." - Karin Murray-Bergquist

We arrived in Montreal on Tuesday and went to Trattoria Trestevere for dinner our experience was nothing short of sensational. Mauro the owner went over the top to please us. The food was fabulous. Every dish that we had was simply delicious. He has an extensive wine list True authentic Italian cuisine. We had such a great experience that we returned 2 nights later. Thank you Mauro for everything. We will return on our next Montreal visit.

My husband and I were visiting Montreal for F1. We found this Italian restaurant by fluke because it was 5 minutes from our hotel. We are so happy we stumbled upon this restaurant, that we went again the next day! It felt like we were back in Italy. The food was incredible! The host/owner Mauro was so kind, ensured our experience was great. Felt like we were visiting with family. The real European experience! Eat, eat, eat until you can’t eat anymore! Then to finish… grappa and tiramisu of course! Thank you Mauro!! We will be back, but next time with the whole family! Cheers!

We came here for the first time because my husband was craving good pasta. So after a quick Google search, we decided to give this restaurant a try, and it turned out to be an amazing experience. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, especially after walking in the freezing weather. The service was excellent—both the owner and the server were very friendly. The food was exceptional. At first, we were surprised by the price. But it was well worth it because not only was the food delicious, but the portions were also generous. I legit got the biggest lasagna portion in my life that I couldn’t finish lol. My husband was also very happy with his Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo. This restaurant is a hidden gem of Italian cuisine in Montreal. Highly recommended 10/10!

Google
For my first time being in Montreal it was the best restaurant I could have gone to, it was a very welcoming and relaxing atmosphere. Maro was one of the people who served us and he and the other gentleman were lovely tans helped me and my friends with any questions or accommodations we asked.

Restaurant Review: A Culinary Masterpiece ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5) From the moment I stepped into Trattoria, I knew I was in for something special. The warm ambiance, elegant décor, and welcoming staff set the tone for an unforgettable dining experience. The perfect place to dine before an epic game 🇨🇦vs 🇺🇸 Let’s talk about the food—absolutely perfect. Every dish was a work of art, masterfully crafted with the freshest ingredients. The gluten free pene with Bolagnase was a standout, bursting with flavor and perfectly balanced. However the shrimp cocktail melted in my mouth, proving that the chef truly understands the art of cooking. Service was impeccable. Our server aka owner was attentive, offering expert recommendations and ensuring our glasses were never empty. The attention to detail, from plating to presentation, was next level. If you’re looking for an authentic 🇮🇹🍝dish that combines exceptional food, outstanding service, and a welcoming atmosphere, look no further than Trattoria Trettevere.

Google
First of all, the ambiance is fantastic. Cozy and charming. The service is excellent and so friendly. I do not exaggerate when I say I had the best marinara of my life, and I’ve been to Italy. Everything we ordered was a hit. (Calamari, beef carpaccio, Caesar salad, shrimp marinara, veal parm, gnocchi Rosa, fettuccine Alfredo) You can taste the freshness and quality of ingredients. If we lived in Montreal we would be there all the time. Definitely go!

Google
If it's authentic, tasty Italian food you're after then Trattoria Trestevere, on Crescent Street in downtown Montreal, is worth checking out. The cozy interior has a distinct European vibe, a great start to your visit. My starter, a Mixed Salad, was fresh and simple. I followed that with an exceptional Chicken Parmigiana. The chicken was moist and breaded just right. The tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese were so tasty and fresh. The pasta too was fresh and cooked to perfection. For dessert I tried the Fried Gnocchi, dusted with icing sugar, on a thin bed of Hazelnut sauce. Delicious! My only caution was a surprising lack of attention to serving etiquette. Each of the three or four Staff that served us, while generally pleasant, reached directly in front of me on a few occasions. I would certainly return to try other items on the menu.

Google
Unsuspecting from the outside, but we were blown away by the food and the service. Luis was on point the whole time. The chicken parm and carbonara were both fantastic and a nice wine list to compliment.

Yelp
We were visiting from the US and ate here on a Thursday night. The food was excellent and the staff great. I had the veal Marsala and it was delicious. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Food was ok. Not the best Italian but no complaints. Service was nice. Pasta aldente which I love.

Yelp
Excellent, friendly, lovely little spot. Service was awesome, food was absolutley delicious, and the atmosphere was cozy and relaxing. The Straticella soup was piping hot and flavorful, and the pasta was melt in your mouth and tasty ( lasagna and manicotti ). And of course desert was worth it too

Yelp
Came bere to grab dinner after my flight and lured by the good reviews. The food is not authentic, bland and not worth the price. The gnocchi with truffle didn't have any shaved truffles and when asked, the waiter told me that it had truffle oil. After eating 1/4 of the plate I just left it as it was bland (oily, no salt or deep flavors). The tortellini in brodo, what a disservice to the Italian community, it was 7 pieces of frozen huge tortellini in Maggi/Knorr broth. I cannot recommend this place and I don't believe the kitchen is managed by Italians.

Yelp
Delicious Italian food - we tried the rice croquettes, ravioli, and Lasagna. All excellent and huge portions. We didn't eat all of the entrees because we wanted to try the tiramisu - excellent. Fairly small space, excellent attention from staff. One of our favorites so far in Montréal - a foodie paradise!!

Melanie D.

Yelp
Came here for my wife's birthday and never regretted it!The food was super delicious, tasted authentic and this is coming from someone who lived in Italy for 15 years!! The owner and staff were superb , very friendly and accommodating, made sure we are satisfied! My wife is gluten sensitive and I am a pescatarian , they told us the ingredients and made some dietary modifications based on our request. Ambiance reminds me of my younger years in Italia!! They just celebrated their 50th anniversary yesterday- it's proven and tested by time! - Morfaty

Yelp
This restaurant was amazing Italian. The Caesar had proper composition with the perfect balance of dressing and croutons. I had a parmigiana which was perfect, it was accompanied with a serving of spaghetti with a sauce that had flavor and perfect texture. As someone who is consistently disappointed with Italian restaurants, this is a real five stars.

Yelp
Wonderful little Italian place in downtown MTL. All of the classic Italian dishes that you would love and quite a selection of wine as well. The service was excellent and attentive. We each very much enjoyed our dishes: gnocchi rosé, linguine primavera, and the fettuccine Alfredo. The bread service was warm and crispy. The salads were ok. The dessert was also not bad. A totally enjoyable experience and the food was wonderful too.

Yelp
The food is outstanding, the service is even more outstanding. We came from Toronto and was extremely impressed. Management is amazing, he is so personable and attentive to our needs. Excellent and Ambiance is amazing !

Yelp
This was the best pasta I ever had! My husband and I stumbled upon this place when we went on our anniversary trip. I hadn't eaten pasta in years, and I finally decided to try some and it blew my mind!

Jamie H.

Yelp
Horrible service Terrible food Seriously Retire people disgusting MacDonalds of post Covid Italian Travel further don't be lured by convince of remaining downtown. Old building but however poorly maintained.

Yelp
Came here for the first time and from the time I walked in, was treated like family! Mauro the owner was so upbeat, funny and so attentive to our needs. We were nervous as there were tornado warnings and he made us feel so comfortable. Now for the food if I can give this place a 10 I would ! I had the homemade gnocci in rose just melted in my mouth. Mushroom risotto was over the top delicious. Brread comes hot right out of the oven Cesar salad was fresh and delicious! A must try is their dessert fried gnocci in Nutella ! I think I'll be going back again tomorrow - the best Italian in town !!! (Victoria Colacci-Petrou)

Yelp
This place is fantastic! I came by myself while traveling for business. What a warm welcome and atmosphere on a rainy fall Montreal evening! The staff was solicitous, the flavors were perfectly balanced, and the ambiance had a cosy, relaxed refinement that is rare to find. I look forward to visiting again. Highly recommend!

Yelp
My wife and I visited Montreal for a long weekend for Chicago. We always enjoy patronizing local restaurants. Great find, amazing food, presentation, ambiance, atmosphere and service! ***** I highly recommend Trattoria Trestevere.

Ken H.

Yelp
Wow! We love Italian food but this was a step above! Delizioso! Great atmosphere and terrific service! Best food we've had so far in Montreal!

Yelp
Best truffle gnocchi EVER i am going to corm back and eat it again the same thing again cux it was so good

Kristi B.

Yelp
We were so appreciative that this restaurant was willing to accommodate our 2 families last minute prior to the Bruins-Montreal hockey game. The staff made you feel like family and the food was delicious. This restaurant is truly a hidden gem and we feel so grateful that we found it!

Mitchell M.

Yelp
Located in a very central location of Crescent Street just below St. Catherine. On a Saturday night Owner or maitre d' was very accommodating squeezing us in and giving us a great table regardless of the busy setting. Started off with a delicious mozzarella en carrozza, fried zucchini and straciatella and minestrone soups. Main courses included a delicious mushroom risotto, outstanding gnocchi rose, a fantastic osso bucco and a great chicken Marsala. Great service and food in a wonderful setting! Highly recommended.

Peter C.

Yelp
Food was amazing. Cozy atmosphere that was exactly what we were looking for. Excellent service, and we even made a connection to the waiter through a friend of his in our hometown (in a different country mind you!).

Janet C.

Yelp
Fantastic food with courteous service! Truffle Gnocchi was delicious and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit! Molto Bene!

Karen J.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere, cozy and cute inside. Excellent traditional and authentic Italian food. Original owners from the Rome area. Service excellent. Friendly and attentive staff. We went early (6:00), to avoid the crowds, and this was a great decision. Crowds started pouring in around 7:30, right when we were getting ready to leave. My husband had the seafood linguine which he loved, and I had veal saltimbocca. Both dishes were excellent. We tried the dessert gnocchi, a unique pairing of fried gnocchi served with Nutella. It was a a sweet treat with coffee!

Yelp
Best meal we've had in Canada. We've come to the F1 race for many years. We used to rely on taking Friday night dinner on race weekend at the hotel. The hotel renovated and the menu for race weekend was restricted so there were few things we could eat. We talked our way in to a busy restaurant - also with a reduced menu for the weekend. The minestrone was awesome. The mushroom risotto had a wonderfully subtle and rich flavor. My Chicken Parmesan was to die for. Home far away from home. A gem.

Yelp
An absolute jewel in the heart of downtown Montreal. If you haven't been, it's time to visit. My mother and I visited this restaurant last night and we couldn't have asked for a better experience. Beautiful ambiance and amazing food which is worth elaborating...I had their escargot as a starter and gnocchi rose for main and my mom had smoked salmon and Osso Buco. My meal was to die for. My mom loved hers as well and let me tell you she is one picky eater. We also shared tiramisu and fried gnocchis for dessert which both were so yummy. Last but not least...Exceptional service. Mauro, the owner who served us was very inviting and charming. Thanks for an amazing dining experience!!

Kristina S.

Yelp
My friend and I had a short visit to Montreal, stayed in downtown, asked a number of people where to dine. Mixed answers, but Trattoria Trestevere was mentioned by several. We decided to give it a try. Absolutely beautiful ambiance, outstanding food and top notch service. What more can you ask for an amazing dining experience... we had carpaccio (which was to die for), calamari, veal Milanese and linguine primavera. We also had tiramisu for dessert followed by hot shots. If you don't know what hot shots are, you must try!!!! Ask Mauro, the owner and he will make it for you. He was amazing!!! Definitely coming back again on my next visit. A must try!!

Aingaran S.

Yelp
I had the linguine primavera and it was excellent! It is a little pricier but great ambiance.

Laura M.

Yelp
Loved our dining experience here! Delicious food and friendly service! Authentic! Highly recommended!

Yelp
AMAZING FOOD, incredibly kind and entertaining waitstaff and an incredible wine selection. Highly recommend !!

Yelp
Located on lower Crescent Street, you will find Trattoria to be homey, comfortable and friendly. It is an older restaurant, but that only makes it more fun. They make you feel like family. Each dish is great. They have a shrimp dish you must try and save room for desert. Their wine list is very nice and will not make you take out a second mortgage. You will love this place. The locals seem to and they are very friendly.

Yelp
Boy oh boy has this place maintained its luster over the years, the food, table and wine service is as top notch as you will find any where and the food, well you'll just have to go for yourself as words simply cannot adequately convey the delightful experience that awaits you at Trattoria Trestevere. I started with the escargot in a heavenly sauce that was just plain awesome, followed by a piece of perfectly grilled Dore. Dore is a very delicate mild tasting fish but the flavor was enhanced by a subtle grilled smokey charred flavor served in a lemon butter wine sauce, simply out of this world delicious. The accompanying pasta with tomato sauce was as perfectly done as anyone could possibly expect or hope for in this life time anywhere. Dessert was a creme caramel, it too was excellent and an espresso short with a glass of Sambucca with three coffee beans, là vous allez la conclusion parfaite! Do not miss this Montreal Italian food standout, I trust you will be as mesmerized with your experience as I was and am with mine.

Yelp
Gord and I had supper tonight at Trattoria Trestevere. Avelino brought us some appies ... the bruschetta was delicious. He also brought us some warm rolls ... they were soft on the inside and crusty on the outside. Gord started with a Caesar's Salad and he said it was the best Caesar's Salad he's ever had. Gord ordered Spaghetti carbonara and said it was delicious. He liked that the pasta was fresh and he said the sauce was good. He'd get it again. I ordered Lasagna al forno and it too was delicious. The pasta was fresh and it was a large portion. Yum! After our meal, Avelino brought us a bowl of walnuts and nectarines. Alas, we were too full to enjoy them. I mentioned that Gord's birthday was tomorrow and Avelino bought him a piece of cake. I just had a couple bites and it was good ... it seemed to be soaked in booze and the icing was creamy. If you want traditional Italian food, you should check it out!

Yelp
It was late Friday night and we were starving. First thing we did was order a Cesar Salad and some bread. Hungry or not, it was the best Cesar I ever tasted! Onto the main course, all of us ordered different dishes and each meal was delicious. True Homemade pasta and sauce and trust me, all were fantastic. I highly recommend this authentic Italian restaurant off Catherine St. in Montreal.
google avatar

Lisa T.

Yelp
I always feel the great vibe of a welcome when we walk in. A very cozy and intimate atmosphere. The menu of food and wine are extensive. Quiet with calming music. A great way to wrap up the city with authentic Italian food and fabulous services. Mauro is superb! He can adjust a dish to your palate and has (most times) a better suggestion. Top notch, affordable prices and pure satisfaction! Can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Larissa L.

Yelp
Eating at Trattoria Trestevere is the cheapest way to travel to Italy!!! I'm so glad I found this place. Everything is just absolutely authentic: the atmosphere, the service, great wine, excellent food....
google avatar

Bronwyn A.

Yelp
Urgh! This is a frustrating review to write because I think that I made the fatal error of just ordering the wrong things. You know when you look around and you think, "Wait a sec...all of their food looks really good...why does my food not look like that?" So I'm gonna give it another try, and will update if necessary. Here's the deal...we both ordered off the table d'hôte. And it really was not worth it, in my opinion, for the tiny salad and kind of average dessert that you spend about ten extra bucks for. (Also, you gotta gimme a heads up if all your desserts are soaked in alcohol. Homie don't play that.) I don't quite recall our choices, but I do recall that they were almost entirely composed of cheese, upon cheese, upon cheese. And not much else. I get it Italian food has cheese. But not that much. I will say, it was quality, not your random shredded pizza mozz. But it was just overwhelming. The service was great though. And I liked the ambiance pretty well.

Isabella E.

Yelp
Didn't even greet us properly, not a good evening not a hello. Proceeded to place us at a table that was dirty, not set up and stained. The food was horrible, I ordered a fettuccine Alfredo and it was extremely greasy, my boyfriend ordered a Spaghetti Carbonara and it was so salty it was inedible. The staff did ask if it was good but tried to argue when we gave them our honest opinion. If I could give it zero stars, I would. We just paid and left, didn't even wait for change. i do not recommend this place to anyone.
google avatar

Sharon E.

Yelp
Classic old style Italian in a cozy intimate setting. The outside is deceptive--you can almost overlook it with Hurleys pub next door. But once you descend the stairs you are cocooned in a intimate setting that is a throwback to another era. Unpretentious but excellent food served with attentive service. Highly recommend their pasta and homemade spumoni...
google avatar

Cindy Feng Xin L.

Yelp
I was genuinely disappointed by this restaurant because I saw the pretty good rating and felt tricked. The food was too salty and did not stand out at all! The meat they cooked was not that good, seasoning is too heavy. Overall I didn't enjoy my dining experience, period.
google avatar

Melanie S.

Yelp
I am enjoying a pre fixe meal which I selected the escargot provencal - which was excellent - veal masala with mushrooms also delicious and a quarter liter of house red. The choices for the pre fixe are good. I am deciding on dessert after the main course.
google avatar

Bob D.

Yelp
A charming Italian restaurant just off Rue St Catherine. We sat outside until the rain drove us in. Not busy at all on a Saturday night, but Americans are always early enough to beat the crowds. We both had the prix fixe, and each dish was excellent. In particular, the caprese was as good as any I've had in Italy and maybe the best ever. Our waiter was attentive and helpful with good suggestions. The $$$ is about right and well worth it.
google avatar

Demo K.

Yelp
Not sure why this restaurant got so many good stars. Our service was normal and the food was not that great. I personally would not come back here the final kicker is when we got the bill and notice how outrageously priced it was. Thanks for nothing
google avatar

Sylvia E.

Yelp
I've been here four or five times before and I am always happy with my meal! Tonight I had the Homemade ravioli and it was amazing, probably the best dish I've had here. If you like rosé sauce you would love this dish! Also the coffee is delicious, a perfect way to end a meal in an intimate setting. And don't forget to have the Spumoni for dessert which is homemade!
google avatar

David F.

Yelp
Outstanding local Italian joint. Sat outside and put ourselves in the hands of the waiter. Could not have been a better call or experience.

Steve B.

Yelp
Same as always, been coming here for over 15 years on our annual trip to Montreal, stumbled across it on a sub-zero night years ago just to get out of the cold. Best, and luckiest move I've made in a long time. Old school Italian decor and atmosphere, friendly prompt courteous service and the food is EXCELLENT!!! My wife insists they have the best Bolognese sauce she has ever eaten, would take transfusions of it if she were ever hospitalized. I've had several dishes over the years, veal parm quite often, and all have met expectations and more. Just enough to fill you but leave you wishing for more. When we first found it I hoped it would be around for a long time, but wasn't sure because it never seemed crowded. But based on the reviews here, many have discovered this gem. Not to be missed in Montreal.
google avatar

Megan A.

Yelp
Am giving this place four stars for making me feel like I stepped off a street in Rome and ducked into a cozy little cafe, plus all of their pasta is house made, a big plus for me. You can order house wine by the 1/4 or 1/2 liter. The house Italian Chardonnay pairs beautifully with the linguine and clams.
google avatar

Victor A.

Yelp
Ravioli was machine pressed. Rosé sauce was velvety. But the bruschetta was below average, tiny bites. Great refuge from the cold long lines of St Patrick's Day.
google avatar

Paul E.

Yelp
Tucked away on the lively Crescent street, this place is a taste of Italy with cozy decor and ambiance. The table d'hôtes was a hit with the caprese entrée of tasty fresh tomatoes with bocconcini slices and pesto dressing followed by piping hot manicotti and 1/2 liter of house Sangiovese house wine. Delicious and well priced!
google avatar

Karen W.

Yelp
Trattoria Trestevere is by far one of the best Italian restaurants in Montreal located conveniently downtown. My family has been going here for years. It is our go to for a celebratory meal. The salads and minestrone are delicious, as are all of the pasta dishes and desserts (tiramisu and tartufo). I highly recommend it!!
google avatar

John N.

Yelp
This is a great family restaurant - a little quiet sanity in the craziness of Crescent St. in Montreal. This place really feels like a legit small family Italian place. I kept it simple - an antipasti plate and pasta with marinara sauce, plus a glass of House red wine. The antipasti plate was exactly what I expected. Very good. The fresh tomato was *really* good. Just a bite, but now in August, it was everything a good tomato should be, and did not taste like an industrial product (sad joke, given just how bad grocery store tomatoes in the U.S. are these days). The mozzarella went with it very well. The bread was a bit of a disappointment - it would have been great to have some really fresh bread, but it was okay. The pasta and sauce was just fine, with fresh grated parmigiana cheese and fresh cracked pepper on top. Just the way I like it. I go for the simple straight forward dishes. If they can get these right, then the more complex stuff is usually good as well. Again, the sauce was great, and the pasta was cooked just right. So I would suggest this place if you are looking for a good place in Montreal with that family-run Italian feeling. BTW, I looked at the selection of wines and it looked great.
google avatar

Rey N.

Yelp
Amazing food and great service. Beautiful atmosphere and kind of reminds you of Italy. Authentic, delicious food. We popped in after a long day of sightseeing and they took great care of us. Highly recommend it.

Edward J.

Yelp
We found this place on Yelp. It is "old school." The look, the menu and the staff all appear to be from another age. Nothing trendy about it. Serious, heavy Italian food. But good. We shared a caprese salad which was outstanding. Then a risotto with seafood (perhaps too much squid) and cannoloni. We would do it again.
