The Best West African Restaurants in Houston | Eater Houston

"Like pho or ramen, Trinity’s piping hot goat soup is a treat to have year-round. The yam porridge with meat or fish is also not to be missed. Check out the $10 weekday lunch special, available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m." - Lane Gillespie

Where to Eat the Spiciest Dishes in Houston - Eater Houston

"The starches, including jollof rice, yam porridge and attiéké—fermented and grated cassava that’s similar to couscous—get star billing at this pan-African restaurant. Perhaps that’s because they’re necessary to mitigate the fire of the pepper sauce-topped proteins that accompany them. Even safe-sounding grilled chicken leaves tasters in for a world of hurt." - Alice Levitt

Google
Easily the most disappointing African restaurant I've visited, the meal gave me a stomachache, overcooked chicken that was difficult to chew, it seemed like old meat.

The food was really good, just need better customer services

Google
The wait was pretty long but it was worth it. Talk about culture. The food was so good! Seasoned to perfection. They have good variety of food items on the menu and their portions are generous. Definitely a good spot for some Nigerian food.

Google
Great food omg. The service is always a bit slow but the food is so worth it. I’ve tried a few things across the menu and all have been delicious. Reasonably priced for large portion sizes.

I have heard so much about Nigerian food in Houston, I went there last month for a program and I decided to eat Nigeria food all through my trip. I googled some places and I wasn't satisfied with their reviews so I asked my cousin who lives there and he told me to go to this restaurant omg! The first day I ate there I was amazed at how many dishes they have there. I ate lunch and dinner every day for 4 days in this restaurant. I love their service in fact, everything about them. If you do not want to experience a delay with your food, call and them your food order before heading to the place if not it takes about 10mins to get served depending on the food you want, which is not bad because they have to prepare most of their food after you have ordered. Thank you Trinity restaurant, you got a customer.

Google
The jollof rice was flavorful, and the chicken was delicious. The plantains and greens were tasty too. I wish there was more meat to balance the amount of rice. Overall, a great and affordable meal.

Google
Very Cozy place! The food is not bad! A friend brought me egusi soup and fufu without meat from here and it was good. The African organization that I’m part of always get food from here as well! I was slightly disappointed when I went myself and my egusi soup barely had any spinach in there and it was thick as when my friend bought it. Still a good place to grab food!

Google
The food is delicious and flavorful overall. We had the yam pottage, grilled fish and spinach. The servings come in very large portions and are enough for two people . The service is a bit slow and unprofessional though.

Yelp
Nigerian restaurants in Houston never disappoint! I was in Houston for just a few hours and told my friends that the only thing I wanted for lunch was Nigerian. We pulled up the closest Nigerian restaurant and showed up, without reading reviews or knowing anything about it and it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The goat pepper soup was very well seasoned, of the right consistency and as spicy as it should be, I can't handle too much spice but my friends loved it! The goat was also tender. I got pounded yam with half and half soups of Egusi and Ogbono because I couldn't decide between the two lol. The Ogbono was definitely the best I have had in a while and both soups surprisingly went well together. I got Pomo (cow skin) because they were out of goat meat for regular soups - tbh, it wasn't really tender but it got the job done and cured my craving. One of my friends got Amala with regular Egusi and stew with beef and he loved it all too. We all got free bottles of water and 3 bowls to wash out hands with. Our waitress was surprisingly readily available and very nice (this is not shade, you go to Nigerian restaurants for the food not the service lol), service was reasonably fast especially given that the Amala was made after we ordered, the restaurant looked clean and it was overall a very good experience. I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
There's no religious stuff going on here... otherwise it'd be the holy trinity. For some late-night African fun and some delicious African food, this is a great option. Service isn't always friendly, but the food is always delicious, and that's the main reason we're here now and again.

Yelp
This place was my to go to African Restaurant, their service and food has fallen tremendously. The food was horrible, the Jollof and white rice tasted like it was made 2 weeks ago. I am sadden to see this restaurant has fallen from grace, the server was rude and unwelcoming. I'm applauded on their low quality of food and service, please consider closing; because the restaurant is filthy and unsatisfactory plus unsanitary.

Anayo O.

Yelp
still the best!!!! long live goddy akooooo!!!! having the goat meat jollof and whole tilapia.. i wish uncle was here to enjoy with me, but its well!!! thank you!!

Yelp
VERY DISAPPOINTING!!! ZERO STARS if I could... I've eaten here several times before over the years, but NEVER have I ever been so disappointed! Neither my husband or I could eat our chicken served with our dinner! My husband had the grilled chicken w/jollof rice & it was a very small old & hard half chicken. I was given hard [literal] pieces of a piece of fried chicken breast to substitute for my grilled chicken, since they ran out...and it was too hard to eat as well! To add insult to injury, they piled on the jollof rice & gave me very little greens on top of the rice... not even a full serving! And that really pissed me off!!! I wasn't feeling well as it was and to be served food that was inedible was really disappointing! I just don't understand why they would serve someone such poor quality of food!! I will never return after this... NEVER!!!!

Bea K.

Yelp
If I could give zero stars I would! The customer service is horrible! The only menu given to customers ordering to go is faded out. The food was a mess. There was no flavor only spicy (which I like spicy so that wasn't a problem). Only two pieces of meat was given which was mostly bone and ALOT of rice was thrown in the container to fill it. The meat was TOUGH too! I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy.

Yelp
So sad to see this place go down hill as they have! They never have nothing ! No meats, no soups and horrible customer service. I found a new spot but its not as close as Trinity to my house, its call Jollof King they're pretty good .
google avatar

Lanre M.

Yelp
The food here is fantastic, the service here is mediocre, but the reason why they're getting a 1 star is because these MF's haven't had grilled chicken in about four years, and it seems like they don't want to prepare it anymore. PS the suya here is weak-ass hell, but everything else is Gucci

Yelp
The food was Amazing the fish with collard greens and fufu. Son got the wings with fries and the meat platter was great large portions and great atmosphere romantic and dime.

Yelp
Amazing Awesome loved it and prices are not too damn high like every other African restaurant

Yelp
Stambled on this place by an accident. It was a tasty experience from another continent.

Yelp
Please don't go here. There was no one in the restaurant on a Thursday during lunch time. First red flag as this place used to be packed. This place used to have great African food. They were out of everything!! I came to take my mother whose never been and I was embarrassed to say the least. The customer service is bad. No greeting. We ordered the chicken with jollof rice plate and the beef jollof rice plate. Usually the plates come out with spinach/veggies, rice and plantains and the meat. We only had the meat and rice. I asked why this. She said they are out of the veggies and plantains. Umm you would think they would mention this before I ordered?! The beef tasted like rubber and was only 4 cubed pieces for $17.50. My moms chicken was pretty much the rib cage and a wing. I made my concerns aware to the waitress and she said "ok" you still have to pay. We took only 1 bite of the food. OMG I will never come back to this establishment! HORRIBLE

Yelp
I stopped by and ordered the Egusi soup with fried tilapia with pounded yam to go. However I sat down and ate a bit of it first. It was absolutely delicious and served freshly cooked and hot. The soup was so flavorful I ordered a second dish to take to a good friend of mine. The restaurant also had a very nice ambience. There was African music playing and it was cool with the fan blowing. It wasnt too dim. It was just bright enough to set a relaxing mood. I gave four stars instead of five because the African woman working the counter with braids was not very friendly. She wasnt hostile or anything. Just sort of nonchalant to me and other customers. She appeared to not be very engaged in her job from a customer service perspective.
google avatar

Yelp
my goodness. Some of the worst customer service ever. It's like... Why do people not understand that when you're in a SERVICE industry you have to SERVE people?!? IS that like a weird concept or something?!? ... like you have to SERVE people... YOU serving people is not a favor for THEM... IT IS, QUITE LITERALLY, YOUR JOB.... I don't even go here for myself because I don't care for the food too much but when I come here to pick up food for somebody or whatever, I promise you, the women are so rude and inconsiderate and impersonable that IT IS RIDICULOUS. They literally slide the food to you without opening their mouth or don't talk to you or don't reach to you when you give them payment or when you give them money they put your change on the counter instead of giving it to you in your hand and if you ask for receipt to get upset and they put the receipt on the counter instead of giving it to you and your hands and don't even look at you don't say thank you or anything. I'm already thankful that I don't give them my business but I need to make sure the people that I love and care need to stop giving them their business. It's absolutely absurd how rude somebody can be when they work in a SERVICE industry...

Yelp
Hubby and I decided to stop by before we left town. Before ordering an entree, I ordered a mixed drink of Ciroc and cranberry juice. Our server came with a shot & maybe a half or ciroc and a full bottle of cranberry juice for $10.00.... I asked how much for another shot and she said $10. That's where they got me f**ked up at. But anyways, I ordered a plate of jollof that came with plaintains, spinach, and assorted meat. Hubby ordered half fried rice/jollof, spinach, and assorted meat. He didn't care for the friend rice, but everything was good. We also ordered a small cup of Egusi soup... it was okay, definitely NOT great.

Yelp
Food was good, service was bad. Fast forward 6 months later, I return there. The staff has DRASTICALLY improved. Girls are nicer, have a better grasp on the meaning of customer service and actually smile at you. I was happy one of my favorite African restaurants was doing well. Then came the food. I ordered the always delicious jollof rice, my SO ordered grilled fish that came with some veggies. Lo and behold in the middle of his dish, was a chicken bone . Mortified I wanted to complain, he said no big deal. Let's finish our meal and leave. A few minutes later, a cockroach crawled up and was stomped. That's when we decided appearances here are highly deceiving. Tipped the nice server decided to never return to Trinity. So, go at your own ti

Yelp
Lukewarm hospitality and lukewarm, yet delicious food. The restaurant is okay. Nigerians frequent this place often, which is a VERY GOOD sign that the food is authentic! Naija music plays in the background. The food is delicious, I just wish it would have been hot! I should have just asked could they warm it up, but their customer service attentiveness is not the best. One thing that turned me off about the service is when I asked for menu suggestions to try, they struggled to describe the food, and when I ask how items taste, they would just say "It is good" in a slightly impatient manner. Keeping in mind the menu DOES NOT have a MENU DESCRIPTION, so of course, one would ask. The Egusi was room temperature for soup, but I promise I'm not being petty, after all, it is soup/stew! The grilled chicken is very good as well. I'm not holding the lukewarm food against them on my rating, had to dock a star because they were a tad bit rude on two different visits. Not totally rude, but just polite enough not to walk out and not order. Overall, okay experience compared to other African restaurants that I've been to with a better experience. I don't think they're used to serving people that didn't grow up in their culture.
google avatar

Jay K.

Yelp
Amazing , amazing , Nigerian food!! (NAIJA!!) the fish is literally grilled to heavenly levels omg; PLEASE GET THE FISH!! Jollof was very good, plantains well fried; and that stew ...please ask for more stew on the side I'm begging you Also the aesthetics of the restaurant were much better , if not superb, compared to other Nigerian/African restaurants . I will be coming back very soon!!

Yelp
Walked in the counter for more than 5 minutes awaiting a menu. Phone ringing and all and waiting but no one was there!

Asia W.

Yelp
MY GOD when the service was terrible i knew the food would be out of this world. They definitely put did themselves or was great. 10/10 recommend.

Yelp
Love their food !! Good flavor and meat is always tender definitely recommend coming here. I'll be back again!

Yelp
To be honest, I wasn't expecting alot from this place, judging by the looks of the food pics but my first visit there was on a desperate craving for home food. First good impression was over the phone when I called to order take out. The guy I spoke to was sharp and straight to the point with taking my orders. I was told 15mins to get meal ready, it was on time. Although I didn't eat in,the environment was friendly, clean and the staff at the bar were great. Fast forward my race home to eat, I was blown away by the portion sizes, my meal was jollof rice, dodo, grilled fish, okra soup + pounded yam + goat meat. Yes, I did say I was desperate and I ordered all that for myself, no apologies. Long story short, I was beyond satisfied. I will be back now that I have confidence in this joint.

Yelp
I come to this place often to get my goat meat fix. Their food is consistently very good! Goat meat pepper soup is yummy. Garnished meat dish is the star of the appetizer show. However they make their greens should be patented because I have yet to taste better. Plantain is always juicy. Stew is always spicy. This is definitely the place to go for West African food, delicious and great ambiance. I'm Nigerian, so I have high standards and they meet them every time.

dee b.

Yelp
I give it two stars because the order was not what I expected. Specifically, I ordered the jollof rice with beef. To my surprise, there were only 3 small pieces of meat in the place, but I was charged about $15. I do not think anyone should pay that much for rice, plantains and 3 small piece of meat. Definitely not value for your buck. I won't be going back.
google avatar

Jase A.

Yelp
Came here for the first time about 6 months and had terrible service yet amazing food quality/portion. Came again last week and decided to order food to go (Jollof w/ Chicken and plaintain). And what did these world class pathetic finesse Gods do? Loaded me and my homie's plate with 60% rice, 30% plantain, 5% vegetables and 5% chicken. Being that I came here before, I figured I didn't have to check my to-go plate before leaving but I guess I was wrong. Lesson Learned. Dine in Only for quality food (because this is the only scenario where you pay after you eat). These pathetic tricksters will try to violate you on take out orders.

Merdz E.

Yelp
This place was suggested to me by a coworker. Went there with a couple of my friends. The Food was pretty good. Service not so great. The waitress was very aloof, and when asked questions about the menu she had this look and attitude like "you don't see it written "?! On top of that she kept taking the menu back. I don't know if they have limited availability but after our third time retrieving it you'd think she'd get the hint that we were not done looking at it. Will probably go back but order to go.
google avatar

Daniela A.

Yelp
My husband and I love trying new places . The restaurant is very clean and the staff is very attentive . Don't judge this place by its location or the outside , the food is on point . The flavors are all absolutely delicious . We did need to ask for recommendations since we didn't understand a lot of the spices and names of ingredients on the menu . Live on the wild side and explore new cultures , you won't be disappointed !

Cheka B.

Yelp
Food is delicious! Service is awful. Please get a new person to be the face of this restaurant. The current Girl does not greet, speak, say thank you, nothing. She always has a mean look. She just sits your receipt to sign down with a pen on the counter and walks away. Customer service is key for return customers.
google avatar

Olu D.

Yelp
I think this is my new favorite spot! Hands down, great food, great service!! Probably the freshest goat meat I've had I years
google avatar

Grace A.

Yelp
Love this place! I went twice on my 4 day vacay in Houston. Service was great! You get a free water bottle with your meal, sadly after reading my receipt i noticed that they will be charging .50 come January for the water bottle. Anywhos i has the goat meat pepper soup on both visits, i was craving it bad! Both times the soup was amazing and the best part was that there was NO LIVER in the soup !!! The soup was amazing and so was the side of plantain I got on the side. I will definitely return very soon.
google avatar

Katt G.

Yelp
I was greeted as soon as I walked in by the staff at the bar. They actually asked me often if I had any questions, but I was busy deciding on what looks good here on their Yelp photos. At one point I begin to place order and looked up and the girl taking my order at the bar disappeared like a ghost while I was in mid thought. I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt this time because of how low I was probably talking under the music in background. I know from experience, Nigerians friends all talk loud so I probably sounded like I am whispering in comparison. I visited for first time during lunch hour for takeout and she and one other person was pretty much running the front of the place by themselves. Besides the disappearing act, I wouldn't change anything. She was very attentive after that. Food was so good and spicy! I was loving the heat! The amount you get for the money is good. I will definitely go back again and dine in next time. I drove past it while looking for it. It's located in a shopping plaza. Just a heads up to be on lookout.
google avatar

Onoriode A.

Yelp
I went here with a family friend on a Monday evening. The decor seems confused and was slightly underwhelming, but, Clean! There wasn't a hostess to sit us and the appetizer, Suya, was completely over cooked! And impossible to get off the stick For the main dish, I got the J rice with goat meat. While the rice presented tasty and rather authentic, the goat meat was unbeatable - which particularly annoyed me, considering the price. It was far too chewy Over all, the experience was pleasant, it's a good space to have a conversation and had soccer on the Tv but the food wasn't revolutionary ...good, but not revolution
google avatar

Yelp
The food was good! I think the jellof could've had more taste. It was a lot on the plate so I had to take home.

Yelp
I was riding around and looking for a different type of restaurant to try. I saw the banner outside and decided to give this one a try. It's a fairly large restaurant, but was completely empty around 2 in the afternoon. I might add that the cashier was very nice and friendly. I saw the Jollof rice and ordered it with Goat meat (which I never had before). This was a to go order, so I didn't eat it in the restaurant. Bad mistake on my part. It was ready in less than 5 minutes. When I got home, pretty much starving and ready to devour the meal. I could not chew the goat meat at all. It was extremely tough, and very small portion. Either under cooked or overcooked. The rice, on the other hand was excellent, and there was a lot of it. I did cook the meat for about 1 and a half hours, and became edible, just seemed like a lot of fat and bone. I tried to find this restaurant in Yelp, but it kept going to a restaurant with the same name on So. Gessner Dr. Had I only ordered the rice alone, it would have been a better experience for me. The waitress told me they had been open about 6 months. But it does not seem to exist on Yelp or google. So, I'm adding it myself. Maybe the other location is different. Usually when I go to an empty restaurant, it is a bad sign. I'll pay more attention next time.
google avatar

Christina A.

Yelp
Best pepper soup in Houston period!!!!! Trinity is 30 mins from where I live taking the toll but when I want pepper soup I make that drive ! I went last week and dined in for the first time and the service was pretty good compared to most Nigerian restaurants. Food came out quick and was delicious! I had beans and plantain with goat meat and of course ordered pepper soup to go! The place can use a face lift, but it wasn't out the ordinary compared to other Nigerian restaurants.
google avatar

Chidinma O.

Yelp
I come here fairly often for my dose of average Nigerian food. Yeah, this place is average but I really only come here because it's one of the few decent African restaurants where you can actually come and sit and have an actual meal. The pricing is really what one expects to find in most African restaurants so quite average on that count and for the amount of food you get I actually think you get enough bang for your buck. The service is here like all African restaurants is quite mediocre really, don't expect great service here. You're going to be reminding them to bring you more water, to remember to bring out the appetizers before the main meal and to bring out everything you actually ordered. I usually get the bitterleaf soup from here every time without fail and this is the soup thats netting this place 3 stars because it is really good but don't count on the meat to be soft or actually have meat on the bones they serve you. Would recommend the garnished meat and bitterleaf soup. I usually avoid everything else. My friend usually gets the coconut rice and he swears by it.
google avatar

Peggy S.

Yelp
The food here is always excellent. The service is usually fast and to the point. Often times they play some popular African musics and even some American jams too. I often order the same things (beef or fish). I love the greens and plantains that come with the meal. This time around I ordered a second serving of the greens! The food has a mild spice overall if you are use to the kind of bold flavors they have. Friends that have not tasted this kind of food sometimes find it spicy...it all depends on your preference. The decor leaves a little to be desired but it's clean. They also provide carry out service. I love the food here!
google avatar

Apples S.

Yelp
The food here is authentic and delicious!!! Often I order the whole fish plate and/or the vegetable soup with goat meat. The plantain is often dry/hard, not soft (I like my plantain real soft). Sometimes the establishment runs out of goat meat (especially on Sunday). It's always clean and the customer service is good. I'll definitely keep dining here and telling others about Trinity.
google avatar

Enaefe Z.

Yelp
Tried their coconut rice for the first time and although it's nothing special, it went really well with the garnished meat because it's spice overpowered the taste of the coconut rice. Their customer service is still poor.
google avatar

Ofy U.

Yelp
Loved the food and service. I will visit again. The music and restaurant was inviting. Ordered the rice and stew, and loved it
google avatar

Kenneth K.

Yelp
I ordered the jollof rice with stewed beef. The food was good but the amount of beef I got was very disappointing. I ordered takeout and their containers have one big section and two small sections. The rice filled the large section AND one of the smaller sections. They served like two spoon fulls of vegetables and they were sitting on top of the rice in one of the smaller sections. The other small section had the stewed beef. It was tender but I'm don't sure it ifs always like that because I came around coming time. The interaction with the staff was unwelcoming. They only spoke to tell me the price and they barely looked at me. For the amount of money I spent, I'd rather go to another Nigerian restaurant in the area.

Yelp
this is my post that i put on Google. 09/13/19 - The post below was written over a yr ago. I went to try them today and the wait was very good. I did NOT wait long. But the attitude of a lady by the name of Chidinma. ORDER # 188762. She slammed my receipt on the counter 2 times, such disrespect.!!!! I SWEAR, customer service is no longer common!! I dont think i want to go back there. That was very belittling!!!! Believe the reviews on here. While the food is good, the female staff SUCK.. I mean it... and lets not mention waiting 1hr for food. Also, the manager is a man, and he is cool!. Honestly, they need new female staff!! Seriously, the cashiers at McDonalds drive thru are more better. Thanks to the female staff, i have tried a place named CAFE ABUJA.. They have great tasting food, and courteous staff. A little higher, but ill pay it for the customer service..

Yelp
Went there on a Saturday afternoon during Labor Day Weekend at 1:35 pm Went inside, and was totally ignored by the staff. No greeting or acknowledgement that i was there, stood there and felt totally out of place. Went to grab their menu to see whats on there. Looked ok so tried to get some service again. Totally ignored again, nobody was there to do anything. We sat our selves down and 5 minutes later still nobody came to check in on us. So i finally signal to the waitress that we'd like to get some help. We tell her that we've never had African food before so could she give us some recommendations. She seemed totally disinterested the whole time and gave us some half hearted suggestions about how I may or may not like FuFu. Great suggestion there lady. . So I just asked them what their most popular dishes were and ordered t hose to make it easy. We ordered Jollof Rice and Pepper soup, but I couldn't tell you if it was any good or not because after about 15 minutes the waitress comes out and tells us that they actually didn't have any of that and they need to make them again and "it would take a really long time to cook". So she pushed us to some fish dishes and fried chicken. It's freakin Saturday afternoon on Labor Day weekend! there was a total of 3 tables in there with people. How do you run out of your most popular dishes at that hour? And how does it take you 15 minutes to figure it out that you ran out? I really wanted to try African food that day, but that was the most lame service I've ever received. I cancelled my orders and left. I dunno what their deal is, never felt so dissed at a restaurant before. I dunno if they're racist and were giving me some weird treatment cause im not African or something. Or I dunno if it's a cultural thing where you just ignore your customers and that's just how things are done in Africa. I don't need some 5 star service, I'm used to eating at Asian restaurants and they aren't particularly known for their service. But at least seat me and let me know whats going on with my order in a timely fashion, that's not asking too much right?
google avatar

Pamela K.

Yelp
The customer services was great, the lady that answered the phone and took my order was very warm, accommodating, and kind. I had the pepper soup with goat, delicious, spicy broth and, tender flavorful goat. There were a few couples dining, seemed to be regulars and nice mix of African music playing.

Yelp
Third visit. Still yummy food. Staff was a lot better and more welcoming... Except the owner. I brought my boyfriend this time who in turn brought three more people. My boyfriend took the bill for the entire day and racked up a pretty large tab but I'm tempted not to go back because of the owner. He literally visited every table except ours and the only time he addressed me was to say something negative. I enjoyed my time up until this point and definitely but the conversation with him drew a large shadow of this place for me.

Yelp
We have ordered out from here a few times. We got puff puffs, jollof rice and plantains for my daughters naming ceremony a few years ago. Last week I actually had dinner with a friend here. I had the beef and jollof rice . He ordered a side of moin moin with his plate and it was very good. To be honest it tasted a lot like the Meza from the tamales . Which I really enjoyed, my taste buds were very happy. I'm Mexican so a lot of the flavors reminded me of our food. The place is in a shopping center near Beltway 8 and it can be a little hard to miss if you don't know the area, but don't leave, it's worth the driving around to find it . The waiter was very friendly even after my friend was being a bit of a nuisance about the Rockets game not being on. If you are the waiter and are reading this, girl I am so sorry I promise to make it to you next time I go.

Yelp
Well, first of all the waitress was down right rude. We've never been here before so we were asking questions. I understand it gets frustrating but she was awful. She kept looking away when we tried to order. Of course my food was wrong. After about 10 min when we get our food (which took over 45 min) we saw a few rats. We all immediately stopped eating, paid what we owed and left. I will never ever come back here. I pretty much lost my appetite for the rest of the evening.

Yelp
Horriable place all around. The services was horriable we was never greeted. The food nasty, nasty!!! the goat was tough the beef was tough and the plantains were fried to hard. When I told the staff about the plantains she just look at me and walked away.

Yelp
After doing research to find what I was looking for I found it! The vegetable soup was DELICIOUS! My man had the jolloff rice and grilled chicken meal.
