With few Cantonese options on the Eastside, my family has been venturing to Triumph Valley for dim sum (which is what they're known for) and dinner. Dim sum is extremely popular on the weekends, and so make sure to get there right before opening (they open at 11am) to avoid having to wait in the long line that forms out the door. Dinner is less popular though and so it's much easier to grab a seat.
The GOOD:
- SHRIMP DUMPLINGS (HAR GOW) - of the dim sum dishes we've had, these are the BEST! They come in a set of 4 and are large, plump, and juicy.
- GOLDEN CUSTARD BUNS - these buns are super fluffy on the outside and hot and gooey on the inside. Don't bother trying to cut these in half because the filling will squirt out.
- SALTED EGG YOLK MOCHI - these are basically the mochi form of golden custard buns. The mochi is nice
and crunchy on the outside and soft in the inside and the custard filling is hot and just a tad sweet. Definitely worth a try!
- FRIED TARO CAKES - these cakes are like radish cakes, except they have a crispy sesame outside and some Chinese sausage mixed into the taro, giving the dish extra savory and umami notes.
- GARLIC PEAVINE - the leaves are super tender and cooked with lots of garlic. No complaints here, except they might not always have it available.
The OKAY:
- STEAMED BBQ PORK BUNS - while the outside was nice and fluffy, the inside filling was too sweet
-BUDDHA'S DELIGHT- this vegetarian dish has lotus root, tofu, celery, onions, zucchini, carrots, black mushrooms, and wood ear mushrooms tossed in a pink fermented bean sauce. This dish was decent overall, but could have a stronger fermented bean flavor.
-XO RICE ROLLS - this dish has been a hit or miss. The first time we went, it had lots of XO flavor (which is basically dried scallop). This last time we went, the flavor was lacking.
-XO FRIED RICE- similar to the rice rolls, this dish didn't have a lot of XO flavor. It also didn't have any protein other than egg white.
The EH:
- SEAFOOD AND TOFU HOT POT - we are big fans of seafood hotpot, but unfortunately, there wasn't much seafood to be had. The broth/slurry was also bland
- OYSTER AND PORK HOT POT - again, as big fans of seafood, we were looking forward to fresh oyster stew. However, the oysters were chewy like firm tofu- I'm pretty sure they were dried originally and rehydrated in the stew which was disappointing. The dish also lacked pork belly.
- BLACK PEPPER BEEF VERMICELLI - this dish looked interesting and wasn't like anything we've ever had before. It's basically a huge pan of crispy vermicelli folded over beef, peppers, onions, and bean sprouts. While we liked the crispy noodles, the dish itself was quite tasteless.
Service is decent and the waiters try to be attentive as possible, but with such a large restaurant, you may need to be patient during dim sum hours.
Triumph Valley has an EXCELLENT health rating which is the highest health rating possible. Their tables, floors, and restrooms are clean.
Would definitely recommend this place for large parties as they have extensive seating.
Overall: 3.5/5 for food, 4/5 for service, 5/5 for atmosphere
