Troha's Chicken & Shrimp House

Never again. I literally don’t even know where to begin…visited on a Friday 5pm-wrote this review same day 6pm. Spent $60, tenders were tiny-one was all breading. Shrimp were not jumbo. Fish chips ok-7 for $12. Coleslaw wasn’t good. And everything was just bland and teeth breaking fried too hard. I had to debread a tender just for my kid to eat one. They had customers so idk what could’ve happened with ALL my food but I won’t ever be back to figure it out.

Got the half-pound shrimps with codfish, and both blew me away, ngl. Shrimps aren't small, decent size and they are crunchy and come out hot. 9.2. Definitely, some of the better shrimp spots in the city. The cod fish is another winner 8.7. The fish batter ion know was really good to me and crunchy...they like huge fish nuggets. Got it with their tartar sauce and cocktail sauce and they didn't miss...overall 9.0.

Used to go here when I was younger for the fries. They changed them and serve a lot less than before. Also they overcharge for everything and tastes pretty bland now. Can't believe I ordered this “full order” of shrimp for almost $20. Firehouse Grill is better on Roosevelt, they got bigger pieces for less.

I grew up with this place and haven't been there in a while. Just went back the other day and it's still the same. Taste great, juicy pieces. You can't go wrong and shouldn't go anywhere else but here. You won't leave disappointed. And Chicago's Best television show was there to show how good it was.

First time here and I'll be back! Got the crab nugget and shrimp combo. With a crab salad and Cole slaw. Delicious!

Best Shrimp in Chicago since 1917! I’ve been going to Trohas since the mid 90’s! I love their shrimp & clam strips! Their coleslaw is a notable! It tastes like no other! The fish chips are a treat! Everything is fried. This establishment is takeout only! They are the perfect Friday night seafood joint! I wish them continued success!

Fell of the cliff, to be honest, I used to have this as a kid with my family. The restraunt has cut back on quality and portions and raised prices. This was honestly disappointing. The crab cakes at Sam's club taste better. 4/10 rating I only gave it 3 stars because I went here for years.

You need to let paying customers use the restroom especially when they ask nicely. You're legally obligated to allow this if you have a dine-in option.

Food and Service is a must! For those who enjoy seafood I recommend trying this out rather than your go tos!

We came here right as they were opening. They were very welcoming and got my order out in no time. The place has a couple of tables but is mostly meant for takeout. The inside was really clean and the prices were fair. We I ordered Full order of Shrimp and Half order of Fish Chips. Both tasted fresh and perfectly fried. They were also seasoned well and came with either tartar, cocktail or mild sauce. I asked for mild sauce but either the mild sauce was to "ketchupy" or it was indeed just ketchup instead of mild sauce. I was slightly disappointed but didn't let it ruin my overall meal. I will definitely be returning.

I have heard about Troha's for yearssss! I never tried them out. Boy have I been missing out on an even more expanding waistline! Hahahaaaaaa! Those shrimp were decadent!!!!! Huge, not over battered, fresh and lightly seasoned! I see how they have been around for 100 years! There crab salad was delicious too. Simple yet fresh!! Very reasonably priced nice portions and ya girl can eat so you know I ain't lying!! Please try them out! My compliments to the Chef and the owners!!!!

So one day, during lent I decided to give to place a try because of 1) the good reviews and 2) the name: Troha's Chicken & Shrimp House. From the NAME alone I thought that this place would be experts in both chicken and shrimp. Boy, was I wrong! I ordered 12 wings, plain and buffalo and a large order of shrimp. The place needs to be renovated but I guess if it ain't broke don't fix it? Located in the heart of Cicero. While I was there waiting on my food this guy, in a cowboy hat and boots, escorted a bike down the street, singing at the top of his lungs! Weird! They delivered my food outside to me. Nice. The shrimp is on point! Not overly battered, fresh, nice size, not overly seasoned and very tasty. You can get a dinner which comes with fries. The fries are just your average fry, decent. Cole slaw was not memorable. If you come here, just get something from the sea. Where the eff is my pickle that suppose to come with the dinner??? Now for the wings. From the name and past pics I expected whole wings. I received winglets that taste the same as the winglets from that grocery store that starts with the letter "J"! Pitiful. Not worth getting. As I looked at the reviews now (hindsight is 20/20) only ONE REVIEW out of 98 says something positive about their chicken and you would have to go back to 2009 to read it!!! If you do a search of the photos and type in "wings" a pic of whole wings pops up, but unfortunately that is from 2014! So let me supply my yelpers with current pics of the chicken so they won't feel fooled like I was. Troha's, with chicken in your name and after the pitiful, small, tasteless, winglets (not whole wings) you gave me, I must ask you... "How Do You Sleep" sung by Sam Smith

I've lived in Chicago for years but today was the first time I've tried Troha's. It is delicious! The fish chips were nice and crunchy on the outside, but moist and flaky on the inside. I'm also very picky about cole slaw but I enjoyed their traditional cole slaw a lot! I can see why they've been in business so long, and I'll definitely be ordering from here again.

Went again for the large order of shrimp and fish chips but tried the hush puppies this time. All were very excellent and (after ordered on the phone) it was a reasonable pick up time too!

Tried the shrimp, fish and chips, and perch and I was amazingly surprised. It was everything I imagined it would be. Treat yourself, totally worth it!

This is my 3rd time ordering g from . Food and service are outstanding. Will have to try other foods on the menu. Don't have one negative thing to say.

Troha's has the best Shrimp on west side, not a heavy breading, excellent salads. The cod fish is the bomb. Food is made when u order,Fresh

I order shrimp basket with fries , hot sauce , ranch and at the end a added 1/4 pint coleslaw Good service , a guy in his 50 probably the owner or manager took my order , good service , my order was done fast . Did not forget any of the condiments I requested Look forward to go back and order some wings Totally recommend this place

Best seafood I've had since I've moved to Chicago from the south. Perfectly cooked not too heavy on the breading and the seafood is fresh! Taste like they fry everything is fresh grease too. I didn't care for the crab cakes(it was made with artifice crab And heavily breaded) or the coleslaw(wayyy to much mayo) but to each is own. Otherwise the white fish and the jumbo shrimp was very, very good. We enjoyed the fish the most. Packing was safe and secure stapled shut so we definitely appreciated the extra layer of protection. Never heard of this place prior to COVID19 so the cool thing is trying new restaurants while quarantined. When this is all over we will be back for sure!!

Love Love Love Troha's!!!!! I've been eating here since I was a small child. I haven't tried many menu items. I usually get the fried shrimp. I've tried the fish & chips, wings, & clam strips too. But my fave hands down is the fried shrimp. It's lightly breaded w/a good flavor. The fries they give you are always fresh & hot too. I don't get by here but maybe once or twice a year, but it's always good!!!

Trohas offers many types of fried fish and sides but the main event is really the fried shrimp and their sauce. Its got exactly the right type of breading or batter. Not overbattered like many other fish houses. Not sure if its true but I heard this restaurant is really old (100 years) and used to serve chicken originally. For all practical purposes this place is carryout. There is minimal seating inside but its critical to eat the shrimp ASAP before it gets too soggy from being wrapped up. They know this and supply packaging with vent holes. A 20 minute car ride home is just on the edge of ruining them. Weve eaten inside and also in the car..... whatever it takes. Last order I got curbside pickup which was convenient..... This shrimp is sooo good that I consider Trohas as one of Chicagos culinary wonders.

I love Troha's Chicken & Shrimp. By far, the best lightly battered and fried shrimp. So succulent and juicy. Crunchy and scrumpceous. Squeezing the lemon juice all over the crunchy morsals and dipping them in the cocktail sauce! Figuratively is heaven in my mouth. The fries are good, I recommend getting them extra well done and with an order of the hot sauce and ketchup. Among their salads, I enjoy the macaroni salad most. Coleslaw second, and then last potato salad. I've had the onion rings before but did not like them. The batter was too bread and thin onion. Cheese sauce is alright. Whenever I'm in thr area, I always find time to get my comfort meal. Totally recommend here . Love reading their wall at the restaurant with their newsclippings and success.

Why has no one ever told me about Trohas?! This place is a true gem. I ordered from them through Uber Eats. I ordered the large fillets, large shrimp order and the wings that were/are on special for $1 each. I also ordered an additional coleslaw. EV-ER-REE-THING was delicious! The breading on the seafood is perfect. The fish was flaky. The wings are flavorful and perfectly cooked. The coleslaw is THE BEST coleslaw I have ever had, knocking my original favorite coleslaw from Smoke Daddy to second place. I could eat their food every day.

Frozen fish patties and chicken wings really My triple combo was disgusting ! This was my first and last time. I can believe they sold me this crap.

Omg amazing. I ordered here form Uber eats tonight and instantly had to go on yelp to rave about it. I got the small combo which had shrimp, 2 piece fish (I got perch), fries, and slaw. The shrimps were huge and not skimpy as well as the fish. The fish was perfectly tender and moist. It also came with a lemon which I thought was a nice touch. I'll definitely be ordering here in the future especially for big group events!

This place is horrible! Ordered from here 3 times! Figured maybe they were having a bad day! Ahh NO! The shrimp. Breading came off and the shrimp had no flavor! Ordered wings! Ahh NO! They tasted like they came out of a frozen Jewel bag and they threw some Buffalo sauce on them. They were hard, not fully cooked! The macaroni salad was disgusting! Sorry not a big review guy but I was not happy with this place. Stay away!

I've been coming to this Troha's shrimp for over 30 years. Although they've changed hands I believe a couple of times I do still find them to be a solid shrimp and fish restaurant. The shrimp are a nice size and breaded just right. Not too much and not too little. The prices have stayed reasonable over the years as well. I usually get a shrimp and fish (cod) combo dinner with a hefty amount of fries and coleslaw for $10. Whenever I need my shrimp and fish fix and I don't feel like dining in, this is my go to spot and I'm sure it will stay that way.

I have been eating at Troha's for over 30 years. Was back visiting Chicago and decided to go re-live some of the good food Chicago is known for. BOY, was I mad, they changed the fry batter, the shrimp were extremely small, especially for the price. This was not the Troha's I know. Highly disappointed. The place has not changed, but the food did, and not for the better.

I've found this place through yelp, Chicago's Best, and groupon. They recently put out a groupon deal; otherwise, it's a little out of my way traveling to Little Village. I know this place is in the hood, but the interior is tiny yet clean, even the kitchen (I took a peek and looked pretty legit). They had a specific guideline for what you can order for the groupon deal, posted on the cash register (pick two (2) kinds of fish for the two (2) combos; this came with two (2) fountain drinks as well). That deal was $20. Time to reveal how everything tasted: the breading wasn't powdery or crumbly; it was done just right. The fish itself was fresh and had a substantial bite (we ordered the shrimp and catfish, like my normal routine). I'm specially fond of the coleslaw. The way they made it was interesting: there was a unique spice they put in, which reduced the greasiness of the mayo. It had a refreshing undertone to it that I never tasted in most coleslaw I had from different places. Everything was made-to-order, as fresh and hot as you could get. The workers there were nice. The third-generation owner, Robert (I think that's his name), was there, too to help out. The traffic was constant. Obviously Chicagoans know their fried seafood and have made the right choice. Established in 1917, the old neighbors have gone, and another batch of newcomers has settled down. I bet this part of Chicago has encountered enormous transformations. Troha's is still here and has managed to survive despite what's happening around them. If you can give this place a try, please come see them in Little Village. I believe CTA bus 60 (26th/blue island) will take you there if you're traveling from south loop.

Me and the Wifey had a taste for some seafood. And we didn't want J&J fish (yuck!!) and we only like the shrimp at Lawrence's and seeing we wanted fish as well we chose not to go there. Instead we search and found that Troha's was close to us and the photos of the food looked great. We then saw them on Chicago's best and after seeing it we hurried to Troha's! We got the XL Order of shrimp, XL order of Fish chips, Jalapeño poppers and we tried the hush puppies. Now to me a hush puppy and Jalapeño poppers are gonna be the same pretty much. But Fish was GREAT!! Crispy on the outside and so flakey on the inside!! Delicious! The shrimp was also light and crispy with tender shrimp inside the crust! Absolutely delicious!! They have just gotten new customers! By all means people try Troha's out the fish and shrimp are off meter!!!

I've been coming here for YEARS. It's my moms favorite shrimp place. We've tried others but it doesn't compare. We love placing lb of shrimp and an order of fries, they are quick and it's delicious. We will not even leave the parking spot and eat it there. I love their macaroni salad. I've pretty much tried everything from the menu like wings to cod. All very flavorful. Besides their fries, I love the onion rings. It's the real deal. A little bit on the pricey side but you won't be disappointed.

Happy to say that I really enjoyed my food at this place. My food was cooked fresh. And was so delicious I loved the frog legs. And the hot shrimp had me singing. This is a great place that I really drove pass many many years. So happy that I made my stop and check this place out. You have got to do the same. The prices are just right and you are going to love the great service. Check out my pictures to see how nice a juicy the shrimp are. I also has the crab salad it was great with some crackers. Shrimp was very good! As was the chicken tenders, it came rather luke warm...but it was delivery. It took 10 minutes in my oven to get it sizzling hot, the portions were very small for the prices, but the actual size of the shrimp was decent. Came with ample amounts of ketchup and cocktail sauce. Would order again.

The shrimp was flavorful, not greasy and NO TAIL which made me enjoy it even more . Great job guys keep on making that delicious shrimp .

Simply the best fried shrimp in Chicago. Delicious hush puppies. Have been coming here since I was a child. Have tried many other fish or shrimp shacks in the city. Pretty much all of them abs Troha's is the best, hands down no questions asked. That place up north on Howard it's ok That far south side place great smoked fish pretty good fried That other place off of Irving park close number two but amazing smoked fish as well without driving to Indiana.

The shrimp was alright but it wasn't as good as before! The fries are always a little soft and obviously not the best. However their macaroni salad is great! I wish the shrimp was a little more fresh and the fries more crispy. I disappointed since I've always had such great shrimp from this place over the years.

Heard about this place on chicago's best. Me & the Mrs. tried this place and was satisfied. Got the full order of Fish & Chips & a pound of Jumbo Shrimp w/ lemon pepper. The food was hot & had a fresh taste, With a nice light batter. This place is a hit Will go again.

Excellent 100+ year old establish in a neighborhood setting. No fancy flair, but the food compensates for anything lacking. The coleslaw is not traditional but it is a favorite, as well as the clam strips! The shrimp dinner is always a safe bet. Stop by! You will not be sorry!

I've been to Troha's plenty of times and they never disappoint. Something was a little different this time. The shrimp was delicious, fresh, the batter was crispy, but a few shrimps later I got a really weird after taste. Like the grease they used was old or something. It was a stale tangy taste in the back of my throat. I had to stopping eating because the taste was overwhelming. Change the grease or something pleaseeee

Found about this restaurant via Groupon Had white fish - great texture freshly cooked Fish chips , good not to fishy tasting , shrimp good fries nice and tasty , only draw back the fountain soda does not offer a diet option staff extremely nice in Halloween nite foodies cooked to order. I don't possibly see how it is at all possible that there are only 25 reviews for Troha's Shrimp and Fish House. At all. I don't see it. The only reason I can think of is that not enough people come here to eat. Maybe the location is it's biggest enemy? I dunno. I love this place. If I'm anywhere near here, I seriously contemplate dropping in and picking up a pound or two of the finest fried shrimps Chicago has to offer. Allow me to paint the picture. Succulent, jumbo Gulf shrimp, cooked perfectly. They know the exact temperature to keep that oil, the breading doesn't get too oil soaked, and the shrimp doesn't dry out. I mean, they've been doing it for 90 something years? I think they have the system down. Delicious non-chewy, grown up clam strips. Not the usual clam strips that are the size of your toes, and might taste like them too. These are the size of your finger, but taste better, maybe. Headless fresh Lake Superior smelt. Never had smelt? This is the place to try it. Or you can come to my house where I butterfly and fry them...But go to Troha's instead. Economic-as-hell hush puppies. 10 for $1.25? I'll take 40. No, 50! 2 sauces - regular and hot. Get them both. Errythang fried. Errythang great. Come get it. Nows!

Held together with love and happiness, Troha's Shrimp & Fish House brings significant amounts of nostalgic pleasure to my mother. You can only imagine my delight when we spontaneously drove to Troha's for my own induction. Troha's is definitely a surprising injection of something different into an otherwise homogenous neighborhood. Or perhaps the neighborhood changed with time, leaving the Troha's owners to blink around at surroundings that were once familiar. Certainly Troha's is old. Everything about it. The sign, the counter, the memorabilia tacked around the walls. It's all old. I would use the gentler word "antiqued;" however, there was also a layer of dust and grime. I watched a thread of dust dance precariously from the ceiling. It was clear that they were going for the feeling of an old ship with some of the stuff. Maybe it was fun at one time, but now it just needs to be run over with a Swiffer. There were no chairs or tables. You buy your food and leave. The owner (and the owner's son) were both manning the counter. A picture of the owner, his father, and grandfather was framed on the wall. It was nice to see an active owner at Troha's. I like it when owners take pride in their work. He had a cheerful and friendly disposition, which delighted my mother to no end. We walked out with shrimp and cole slaw for a cheap price. The shrimp (which my mom led me to believe would be MASSIVE and dripping with buttery goodness through a paper sack) were regular sized, battered, and deep fried then served in a styrofoam box. They were good, but exactly what I would expect of battered, deep fried shrimp. I think my mom's childhood memories were a bit grandiose for what she gleefully shared with me. Unfortunately, I don't have the same nostalgia for Troha's that my mother has in spades. The experience and food quality were not noteworthy enough to lure me back. Perhaps I'd go if I lived in that neighborhood, but I don't. It's just not worth the trek.

I am waging that over $1000 has been spent by yours truly on Troha's since being introduced to it last September! I just simply love their fish soooo much! It is the closest to New Orleans that I've had in Chicago. Because I am always missing New Orleans and its food, po' boys especially, there is a method to get as close to Verdi Marte's po' boys as possible in Chicago. What you need is a loaf of Jimmy John's day old bread (excess dough gutted on the top half), mayo, shreded lettuce and catfish or shrimp from Troha's. I like adding Arnaud's Remolaude sauce (from New Orleans) to give it some zip. For you northerners, Remolaude is a tangy dressing-like sauce/condiment that has a tangy horseradish flavor to it. It is commonly served with fried green tomatoes. While this po' boy method is not Verti Marte, it brings fond back memories of stumbling down Royal St. late at night. Also very good at Troha's are the Alaskan Whitefish and Scallops. I want to thank my late friend Johnny Ferguson for sharing Troha's with me last fall. Johnny, may you rest in peace!

My first time eating from here and I was extremely happy with my food. I ordered regular order of shrimp, half of fish and clam strips which were breaded and fried to perfection. Good sized portions and the shrimp were large, plump and juicy not overly breaded you could really taste the shrimp. Everything tasted fresh and not overcooked. The tartar sauce tasted homemade. I would highly recommend and will be ordering again.

I ordered the shrimp dinners and the shrimp was lightly breaded and the shrimp were peeled and deveined. My peeps that ate it were super happy and of course, I was too. I tried to tell them that I cooked it and they laughed at me. They wanted me to get the same for them the next evening and I was like... I am not that rich. Anyhoot, definitely would go there again!!!

I am back... I just can't drive that stretch of the 290 and not exit Kostner! ...And after face painting at my great niece's three year old birthday party; Auntie wanted a treat. Actually, any excuse will do for me to stop - I should do it more often - especially since I found out that eating a half pound of those wonderful, delightful, tasty pawns, is not so bad on my calorie intake. Yes, I went back out on my bicycle again today... And my tummy was so happy! There's a contest of sorts to win a shrimp dinner - all one has to do is "like" Troha's on Facebook - but I love them and there's no "love" them on Facebook.... Wait, I don't have a page, (I know, so NOT; 21st century - I'm a face-to-face kind of gal)... I'll just go and buy another 1/2 pound for the road and a pound for home. You guys are the BEST!!! Oh, I just noticed my previous reviews - I've missed reviewing a few times... But really folks this place is a gem,... No, it's gold. No... better, PLATINUM! Just go, see for yourself - you'll be hooked - (Fish House - hooked, hahaha:-). Pun intended.

Wasn't really impressed. However this may be because it's just not my type of shrimp. It was a constant steady flow of people so apparently it's a popular place but it's definitely not a do over for me. More like a takeout place.

Came back with a Groupon and I'm bumping them up a star because those guys are so nice and friendly. Still not the best shrimp, but their frog legs are like on steroids.

This place doesn't look that great on the outside but the food was pretty good! The shrimp were clean, fresh and seasoned, so was the perch fish! I also ordered the catfish but I didn't really care for it. The homemade cocktail sauce was the best I ever had, one was sweet the other was spicy both were good!

Visited during first trip to Chicago, very pleased. The shrimp and clam strips were.my fave. The fish a close third, not too greasy and just right!

My husband and I loved everything! We got the fish-chips, shrimp, fried clams, chicken tenders, hush-puppies and coleslaw delivered through uber eats. The shrimp was definitely as great as everyone says! I just found that the restaurant website says they're byob so we're excited go to dine-in soon and try more stuff.

I didn't grow up on this side of town. I was extremely curious about this place because I really missed having good fish chips and shrimp. I fell in love with this place. I think in 3 months I have ordered at least 10 times.. thank you for giving me the best, and cleanest fish chips I've ever eaten..my new favorite spot!!!

Evwryone swears by these shrimps but when I ordered my fried shrimp they were great and the coleslaw was laying out outside for the entire 15minutes that I was there n evem tasted warm so I had to spit it out because I wasnt going to risk getting sick off it. The place looks dingy and parking is a nightmare. If you want awesome shrimp hit canal n cermak!
