Best Caribbean and Jamaican Restaurants in Atlanta | Eater Atlanta

"The flavors of curry are spread over plates of goat, mutton and more at this simply appointed cafeteria-style meat-and-three in Norcross. Hit the counter and choose from several options — some of which stay strictly within traditional recipes, and others like the boneless sweet chicken, which lean into the tropical flavors made famous by island chefs. Other standouts here include curried beef, crispy conch fritter platters, and a pulled pork sandwich that incorporates Carolina-style barbecue sauce." - Mike Jordan

These OXTAILS WERE HORRIBLE & EXTREMELY TOUGH!! I reviewed Tropical Cuisine some years ago, giving them 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ due to the food being amazing and customer service being just as amazing. Unfortunately , that has definitely changed. I'm aware that they have switched owners in the last few years. I have been a bi-weekly regular customer patronizing this establishment since 2010. I have scaled back the last few years but would still go for the curried chicken . I made an error in judgment tonight by attempting to order one of my favorite island meals... Oxtails with rice and peas.. They were tough,it difficult to them with a fork and knife.. I had already come home and prepared to be home for the evening. I called to request a refund, and to my surprise, the ONLY way that I could obtain a refund was if I got up and got dressed and brought the meal back tonight. I wasn't given the fair opportunity to bring it back tomorrow . I have a receipt and spoke with the exact gentleman who took my order. What an inconvenience when your establishment should know when your Oxtails are not prepared well and are undercooked. Needless to say, poor customer service , a horrible experience, and it's to late to eat at this point . I do not recommend this location for your dining experience.

I had the best pasta I have ever had in my life on Friday, January 16, 2025. The next night my stomach started hurting and I started popping all through the night into the morning. I had to risk it and get on the road to get diarrhea medicine and pray for no accidents. Because they have a great health score, I refused to believe this food was the cause as it was so delicious. I blamed it on hotel water, the eggs at another restaurant. I was so convinced it wasn’t this food I even went back to get more food and when I went to leave a review, I saw another reviewer state that she was sick like me after eating on pretty much the same night. I immediately found an un housed person to give the food to and prayed that the sickness had passed from the food and decided to leave this review. I am so disappointed as the tropical shrimp and chicken pasta was absolutely delicious. I had plans to order some and bring back home it was that good. I am still in disbelief. Utter disbelief.

Google
$7.99 lunch special was amazing and the food was real good . After taxes $8.69 …… It had a spicy kick to it felt like I was on an island in Jamaica eating. The staff was real friendly with smiles on their face and very helpful in me choosing my selection. I had boneless curry chicken with rice and broccoli. The plate was big enough to share it with someone and still get full . No complaints and I’m actually mad at myself for not coming here sooner .

Google
This was my first time, but definitely not my last. I came in during the lunch special & was not disappointed. I got the Chicken Pasta & added Jerk Sauce — chef’s kiss! And they give you decent portions. They are fast as well.

Google
Horrible.. I have lived in Atlanta 30 years and this place has never disappointed. I moved away 2 yrs ago came back through the other day and the ownership changed and the food is not good. My husband had the oxtails ( tougher than leather) my curry goat had no curry flavor. The rice was undercooked. Not one Caribbean in the place cooking. Negative. Pass this place up. 👎🏾

Google
Wow. Just had lunch at this awesome place and the food was amazing. My party of 5 each at something different, and everyone rave about the food.

Google
This my second time visiting this spot. It’s been there for years and easy to ride pass because it sit back in the cut, but don’t skip this hidden gem. Everything I ate was good. The chicken roti was huge but was missing a little of something (a kick or something) to tickle my taste buds. The Alfredo salmon pasta is a delicious choice. The Mac n cheese is good and my favorite was the stew whole red snapper. It was fresh and plenty. Worth the money and plenty of food for the cost. Service was friendly and fast. Not much going on inside but majority of people get it to go. And it was clean. Can’t wait to go back to try the roasted eggplant. And there are charging stations for electric cars available also

Table for 2 for lunch Approaching the restaurant and looking at the outside, it looked very unimpressive and generic. I quickly found a spot in the huge shared parking lot. It looked like a few of the surrounding stores were shut down and abandoned. I waited for my friend to arrive, because he had been here before.  He arrived and we entered. He advised that the indoor dining room was to the left and I could see they also had a counter, to the right, where you could place a takeout order.  We seated ourselves in the dining room, which was pretty empty.  The interior decor pretty much matched the outside look, very understated.  Our server quickly came by to take our drink orders.  I ordered a ginger beer.  Then we quickly decided on our entrees.  My friend ordered the boneless jerk chicken meal and I ordered the Curry Chicken Roti. I asked if the Roti was big enough for a full meal because  I was also contemplating ordering the Curry Chicken meal.  Our server explained it should be good enough portion. The food came out pretty quickly and my Roti was huge, more than enough for lunch. I started to dig in and It was “on point”.  It was very tasty and seasoned well.   My friend commented that his Jerk Chicken meal was also very very good. We were eating and chatting it up in the dining room and our server Santee continued to check on us to make sure everything was going well.  He was very attentive throughout our visit and we were not being rushed out of the dining room. Overall, a good experience and I would return to try some other things on the menu.  A couple side notes, when I left I had an oily taste in my mouth for a little bit. On a good note, when I heated up my Roti two days later, and it was just as good.

Yelp
Food is always great. Love the oxtails and the chicken tenders are sooo juicy! Service is always fast and staff is always friendly. To-go orders are always smooth. Never ate inside, I've always ordered to go and never had an order messed up.

Yelp
I haven't been here in years. The food was always good. I stopped in yesterday and purchased the brown stew chicken. I was so disappointed. The chicken was dry and the gravy was more watery. This is the first time that has ever happened. I tried to eat it but ended up throwing it away. Not sure if I will be back. I drove a long way and couldn't go back to return it. That dish is usually so good. Man I was disappointed
google avatar

Dee S.

Yelp
The food wasn't that bad - but the bathroom didn't have toilet paper - so that's why low stars - along with my patty being burned - thanks again
google avatar

Tiffany S.

Yelp
Customer service was excellent however I didn't like the oxtails or the peas and rice. I like my ox tails to be kind of sweet. They was tender and a nice size though. could have more for the large size

Nelly J.

Yelp
Every time I land at the airport and head home, the Chicken and Shrimp Pasta with Tropical Sauce is my go-to order. I usually get it medium spice, but the spicy version packs a great kick too! Fettuccini Alfredo/Spicy Vodka sauce/Jerk vibe. A must-try if you're in the mood for something flavorful and filling! Dessert case is always full of different cakes and puddings. Great service.

Allison

Yelp
The food was good, but not for the price. The oxtails can run upward of $32 but the tails are mostly bones not a lot of "Ox" on them if you know what I saying. The desserts are pretty good. It has a nice balance of sweetness and different ingredients.

Shan S.

Yelp
Customer for 10+ years but can no longer eat here. 1) Staff can be rude at times. Felt discriminatory although tried to give benefit of doubt. 2) Recently, keep finding hair in my food. Straight black hair. Each meal. 3) Last time - ordered chicken pasta and the chicken was completely inedible. Didn't taste/look the same. Not even sure that that meat was. Can no longer overlook the quality issues. Hair nets need to be worn by entire staff bc finding hair in food every time isn't acceptable.

Yelp
Restaurant has been over here over 10 years the best Jamaican food on national highway the yellow rice always cook. The chicken is never dry. In homemade patties.
google avatar

Wendy W.

Yelp
Very good food. The dark chicken is delicious so is the cabbage and the rice and peas. I went here over 15 years ago and I think the owners have changed. They have vegan vegetarian options which look really delicious. They have Jamaican patties and I'll be back. It's a really good atmosphere great place to grab some lunch. The barbecue sauce is delicious. I added that onto my jerk chicken. You can get the jerk chicken with bone and or you can get it bone out which is different.
google avatar

Rochelle W.

Yelp
OMG where have I been Certainty not here this place has the most authentic Caribbean cuisine. From the Roti to the Curry snapper I would most definitely recommend this place Head on over whenever on the southside

Joy D.

Yelp
Food always good one plate will feed two people. Service is always awesome , we've been coming g here for years since the 80's and it has t changed a bit which is good . If there's a problem or complaint it's because of the newbies . There's nothing bad you can say about this place .

Yelp
Food is always good. Customer service is second to none. They are fast and accommodating. They have daily lunch specials so you always get a bang for the buck. Pasta is amaaaaazzzzing

Yelp
I'm going to start by saying I have been coming to Tropical Cuisine since 2004 so 10 years so I was excited to be in the area to order takeout after not having my Tropical pasta since 2020! When I called and order the guy who has been working the counter since I first visited this place answered the phone and I immediately got excited about my order. Service over the phone was great as it always has been over the last 10 years. Once I got to the restaurant and walked in to pick up my food it immediately felt unfamiliar in there with the different staff working but once i got to the counter to pickup and pay for my food, i seen a familiar face (the guy who took my order over the phone) and i felt better. Anyways, the young man shows me my food before paying and my pasta plus yams as a side looked and smelled exactly the same like when I had it for the first. I'm eager to get home and devour my food. Well get home, food is still hot so I dig in.... disgusting! Even though my food looked the same, it did not taste the same. Yams were hard and not cooked all the way and the pasta noodles were cooked too long. Very mushy. I'm so sad because I brag about the food here being consistently good and on Saturday, 1/20/24 was the very first time I did not like my food after being a customer for 10 years. 3 stars because the service was good and always have been and there is plenty of parking in front of the building. Meal: Tropical chicken pasta (medium spicy) with yams Cost: $19.38

Anonymous A.

Yelp
It's not what it used to be. The food was once amazing and justified the cost. Moreover, they were consistently excellent in food preparation and quality. However, my last two visits were disappointing and, in my opinion, not worth the price.

Yelp
Santy took great care of us during our visit toward the end of the night. We ordered fried conch, cocoa bread (buttered), fried plantains, brown stew shrimp, escovitch whole fried snapper-- both served with rice & peas and steamed cabbage. The food was delicious and fresh! The flavors married each other. You must get the lemonade/ginger beer mix. We didn't have any room for dessert but it looked great. We will be back for lunch!
google avatar

Michelle C.

Yelp
This place is awesome. The Food is very filling and delicious. It's best to order ahead due to this establishment being so busy. I always get the Curried Chicken Rice and Peas.
google avatar

Elle O.

Yelp
Man do I love some oxtails and this place has em. I was so excited to come back to Atlanta because I get to get my fill of Jamaican food. This place definitely tops the list. We ordered a to go order and it was done when we got there within 20 mins. The oxtails were so good!! I really wish this place was in Vegas. The yellow rice is super flavorful and the coco bread is a must! Definitely will be back here again. Hopefully before I leave town.
google avatar

Kei M.

Yelp
Pretty decent! I appreciated the quick service during a lunch rush. Good, fresh roti but the curry chicken was pretty bland. The patties were also cold.

Sherie K.

Yelp
I have been coming to this restaurant for 20+ years...those who know, know the slim man at the counter is the absolute best worker they have. However since he only works weekends, the new counter staff SUCKS!! Gushad should be terminated immediately. I will never spend another coin at this establishment. Bring back the old people and the great customer service!!
google avatar

Kennedi L.

Yelp
I am hooked. My friend has been holding out on me with this hidden gem. It is hidden behind the chevron gas station on Old National Hwy. Don't miss it. The tropical chicken pasta and the tropical shrimp and chicken pasta is the bomb!!! I get it either medium or not spicy. The tropical sauce has some kick to it. You will not be disappointed. The Carmel cake is melt in your mouth goodness. They have a variety of cakes and cheesecake. They have a vegetarian menu also. Stop in and give it a try.

Yelp
I was very excited to have some really good Caribbean food and was really let down by what I ended up getting. I ordered the Crab Patty, Oxtails with Collard Greens and Yellow Rice, and Key Lime Pie. The wait was longer than they said it would be and the food was not worth the wait. I saw a customer (obviously a regular) ask the staff to heat up their patty so it was hot as they wanted to eat it immediately. When I asked for the same thing, I was told the patties were hot and didn't need any reheating (as they came out of an obviously only luke warm holder). I as I bit into my Crab Patty, it was not hot. The crab in the patty was also fake and the pastry to filling ratio way off, as every bite was 3/4 pastry and only 1/4 filling. The Oxtails were extremely fatty. I've been to other places and the oxtails in those places are obviously stewed longer so the fat is rendered off. Not here. If you order the oxtails, be ready for a mouth full of gross feeling beef fat. The flavor was ok, but the amount of fat left on the oxtail was incredibly off-putting. The collard greens were unseasoned and bland. The yellow rice was good...in the same way that Uncle Ben's yellow rice it good. The key lime pie was...really, really good. All said, with much better options around, I won't be returning here.
google avatar

Ken O.

Yelp
The food is average on the west Indian vibe. They not really Caribbean but the sell the food. Not authentic but it will do, just lower your expectations. I have tried beef patties, jerk chicken and rotis. Very nice people but food taste like it gets masses produced off site.

Yelp
Moved to ATL over 10 years ago and used to frequent Tropical at least 3 times a months on my way home from south GA. Maybe 4/5 years ago, something changed, food started tasting different; not as good. The rice was mushy, curry chicken wasn't the same, something wasn't right. The service was the same. I would call in and order, ALWAYS call in your order or you will wait for a long time. Tropical Cuisine has always been clean but don't go there looking for ambiance; it's an old building where they cook decent food. For my health, I am getting off of meat as much as I can. 2 Days ago, I ordered curry tofu, peas and rice, and cabbage. It was so, so good. The black bean soup is also delicious. Praying that Tropical Cuisine meals continue to be good, and be a part of my vegan journey.

Yelp
I had been craving Jamaican food all week. Since my fav is a distance from me now, I had to plan my visit! Lol. I studied the menu before I left home and knew exactly what I wanted. So half way there I called in my order bit the hold was about 6 mins. So once connected I ordered the Brown Stewed boneless chicken, rice and peas, cabbage and candied yams. I asked for a beef patty cause it was the weekend! They are truly practicing social distancing and you must wear a mask! I was fifth in line and the line moved quickly except for this guy who couldn't decide what he wanted. My food was A1 and I was so excited to eat, when I got home, I forgot to take a picture. THANKS OPD FAITHFUL TROPICAL CUISINE! Never lets me down.

Yelp
We randomly stumbled into this restaurant while searching for a place to eat. It is located una run down mall. First impression of the business is that it's rather dated and overall sketchy. We were hungry and figured we would try it anyways. Upon walking in, you get an open floor space with no area to eat and a rather dirty environment. We placed our order on their rather limited menu. The woman who took our order was nice, but seemed overtly busy despite there being no customers in the establishment. The food quality is extremely poor. I ordered the chicken curry and received nothing more than a dry plate of chicken with some sauce on top. The flavor profile was rather poor. Additionally, the food gave me severe stomach issues and GI upset in the evening. Overall, I would recommend going elsewhere. The quality of the food is not present and will leave you stuck on a porcelain throne.
google avatar

Kristi C.

Yelp
Date: 10/3/2019 Parking: Open lot My date ordered the Oxtails that comes with rice and a side. I had the curried chicken with rice/peas and cabbage. Both meals were YUMMY. The curried chicken was moist and seasoned so well. One thing I always appreciate too is when the food comes out hot. Our food was piping hot. We also indulged on beef and chicken patties which were DELICIOUS! Our waitress was nice and the food is reasonably priced. No complaints and I can't wait to come back for Jerk Chicken.
google avatar

Lisa A.

Yelp
Sooooooo I ordered the sautéed salmon dinner from Tropical Cuisine this evening and I was a little surprised. I was expecting to get a strip of salmon, not little salmon bites chopped up but in the end it all goes down the same (I guess) lol. I gave this restaurant 4 stars because the flavor was TOP NOTCH but the presentation was poor, and that may be because it was takeout from Uber eats so I'm not gonna knock them too hard. I definitely recommend this restaurant and I'll probably order from here again while I'm in town!

Ambrya M.

Yelp
Ordered from UberOne and man... it was not only delicious, it tasted fresh, and there was plenty of food!
google avatar

Darlene O.

Yelp
Tried this restaurant because I was on the South side and it's been on my list of places to try for the longest. Wouldn't come back and here's why: The stuff I wanted to try: pastas (pictures look terrible from Yelp, sauce is runny and reviewers didn't speak highly of the pasta dishes so I passed), reviewers also reviewed the brown stew chicken poorly so I also passed. Ordered the oxtails with two sides which were OK but I'ma stick beside my go to spot for oxtails in the A from Creole Orleans Catering in food court of Greenbriar Mall. Their oxtails are the best, well seasoned and their rice and peas are also well seasoned. Haitian restaurant. The rice and peas were over cooked. And seasoning was slightly bland. The collard greens were also OK. Not bad but not great. I ordered their ginger lemonade mix. I didn't care for this because the ginger tasted artificial reminded me of the honey lemon cough drops. Then I also ordered the sorrel ginger which was better than the ginger lemonade but nothing to write home about. I ordered the strawberry cake also which was OK. I didn't care for their jerk chicken patty. The filling lost me. I threw the uneaten half in the trash. The additional side of plantains was a waste of money. Went down the trash. I like my fried plantains extra ripe and soft. These were chewy, not fresh (as if they had been fried awhile ago and had been sitting out).
google avatar

Darlene M.

Yelp
I had brown stewed chicken and yellow rice. Spiced just right. Although the sorrel isn't the best for me cause I love lots of ginger in mine l. Service was great and friendly. The restaurant had a comfortable setting since I visited on a Sunday the had live music. I felt right at home.
google avatar

Maisha H.

Yelp
The staff is super friendly and polite. I got brown stew chicken and spinach dal. The brown stew....meh. I enjoyed the dal and the nan. I'm used to Jamaican brown stew chicken and the flavor just wasn't here. It was just a little off to me. I can't describe it. I think I'll try them again but try something different. The place is always packed and super popular so I'm sure there's something yummy there.

Princess P.

Yelp
Great food! We dined in and Santy provided great service and wonderful recommendations on what to get as it was our first time! Will def be back
google avatar

Nate C.

Yelp
First time in a long time. Ain't nothing changed. If you don't know, ask. This place gets the rock star of the year award! To be continued...To be continued.

Staysha W.

Yelp
Wanted some Brown Stewed Red Snapper, no flavor. Fish was not seasoned, nor was the greens or cabbage. Disappointing.
google avatar

Shanna L.

Yelp
I've been coming to this place for about 7 years now. They changed ownership in that time frame and the quality is just as good. I always order the curry. This time around I ordered the salmon, during lunchtime. I definitely noticed the portion size differentiating lunch and dinner rations. I was displeased at first but it filled me up just fine. Also, ordered a carrot cake. Everything was super yummy.
google avatar

Marian D.

Yelp
Liked / Liked / Liked / Liked / Liked / Liked / Liked The food is not bad Family restaurant Disliked \ Disliked \ Disliked \ Disliked \ Disliked Cabbage: not much flavor Oxtails were really tough (I like my oxtails fall off the bone, melt in your mouth) These were neither. The other parts were super fatty *The only reason this review is 3 Stars is because I came really craving oxtails, excited about the reviews I read and was disappointed. The food is tasty.. I think with me just being unsatisfied after paying almost $20.. it's hard for me to leave a better review I'd have it again though... just not for the oxtails
google avatar

Glenda B.

Yelp
I have passed this place a thousand times and never gave them a shot. I was really hungry one day and didn't want to leave home so I decided to give Uber Eats a shot. The restaurant selection in my area for Uber Eats is not too good but I was happy to see a new entry and that was Tropical Cuisine. Of course I scope the menu and then I go straight to Yelp to see their review and also view pics of the food that fellow Yelpers have submitted and not the restaurant itself. I saw pic after pic of the Oxtails. Ok I'm sold. I ordered Oxtails, cabbage, rice and peas and a side of yams. I received my food in a reasonable amount of time. The bag was heavy....Win!! That means they were stingy with the oxtails. I opened the plate and voila. That food looked so freaking good. I should have heated it up a bit but I didn't. The food was bomb!!! The oxtails had about 9 or 10 bones with about 4 of them being huge ones. So moist, tender and full of flavor. The cabbage was cooked perfectly. It wasn't raw. Some Caribbean places barely cook the cabbage for whatever reason. The yams I did not like though. They looked good but they had too much ginger or lemon. I couldn't put my finger on it. However that didn't keep me from eating my butt off. I will gladly order from here again.
google avatar

Hart P.

Yelp
Best Caribbean food in Atlanta. It may be in a run down part of town and in an ugly building but the experience is well worth it. Every dish could come straight from the west Indies and I enjoy them all. Homemade desserts are displayed at the front counter. Very good.

Jennifer R.

Yelp
My daughter and I ordered food there over the weekend and we weren't pleased at all. This isn't authentic Jamaican food. I ordered Curry chicken in which the chicken was a bit tough, what was supposed to be rice and peas was nothing but plain rice with gravy over it, the yams were horrible. I will never go back to this place again, if you're looking for authentic Caribbean /Jamaican food this certainly is NOT the place.
google avatar

Mrhobbs 7.

Yelp
I've been patronizing Tropical Cuisine since 1995. It is a staple in the community. Every item I've ever tried on the menu has either met or exceeded my expectations.
google avatar

Kiah R.

Yelp
It is located in the back part of a parking lot, I ordered to go but checked out the dining room, it could definitely be updated. There was a line so I had to wait a while for my food to come out. I got the oxtails with mac n cheese & cabbage it was okay not much to talk about, I have been told I need to get the tropical pasta and the curry chicken and shrimp so I will try that next time and update my review.

Nina B.

Yelp
My friend ate here yesterday and got extremely sick like food poisoning my experience was the same , I don't know if they serve bad food . Or there's a highly cross contamination going on . But it's very concerning about being sick after eating here . I don't know if they don't practice properly food handling . Or the food is being cooked and serve at the adequate temperature.
google avatar

Keith S.

Yelp
Got the ackee & saltfish and chicken & shrimp pasta, food was good only complaint was that they didnt include one of the sides I ordered. Im definitely gonna go back, just gotta check make sure to check the order before I leave

Tesha T.

Yelp
Food always on point. I've been a customer for at least 20 years. Customer service is always great. Establishment always clean . One of my favorite Caribbean restaurants. Great place to eat with friends and family.
google avatar

Ciara D.

Yelp
I came here for a team lunch with my coworkers, who visit here frequently. We had a party of about 10 and were seated immediately. The server was cool and knowledgeable and took our orders quickly. The food came out pretty fast too. I ordered the bone-in brown stew chicken, rice and peas with oxtail gravy, and collard greens. I think I definitely found my favorite dish because it was delicious! The brown stew chicken had the perfect balance of sweet and savory, the greens were pretty solid, and the oxtail gravy on the rice and peas was satisfactory (still not better than my favorite Jamaican spot, but good overall). This was my second time here and I'll more than likely be back.
google avatar

Symeria J.

Yelp
I don't mind usually when their are multicultural kitchens , but this should not be advertised as Caribbean/ Jamaican food. This establishment is operated by individuals that seemed of Indian decent- so they should be good with the seasoning- wrong assumption. Rice and peas was a definite no. Beef patty was good. My stomach is in shambles as I write this review at 6 am and we ate there the previous day around 5 pm. I'm hurting and so should the review ratings.
google avatar

JP P.

Yelp
You gon' wait in line, but, it's gonna be worth it. This place is consistent. My husband and I always get the Tropical Pasta, it always delicious and a nice portion. I do think the price could be more fair but it's not stopping me from patronizing. You can no longer dine in but every 2 months we still come here. There is always a line and subsequent wait. The desserts I have gotten a few times have been great!
google avatar

Ojus P.

Yelp
Ordered delivery through Uber Eats and had a great experience. Spinach and Chickpeas - 4/5. Rich, garlic flavor. Medium spicy so I needed milk to comfortably eat it. Naan is OK. There's a red onion mix on the side that I found spicy and not that tasty so I ignored it. I asked for the dish to be mild and the restaurant called me to say the spinach mix is pre-made so this is not possible. They handled the situation well and I'm glad I stayed with the dish.

Yelp
I love this place it's so good the curry goat is amazing and the tropical island pasta with shrimp is awesome
