The 11 Best West Indian Restaurants in NYC’s Little Guyana | Eater NY

"Enter this narrow Trinidadian roti shop, and there’s a long steam table of more than 40 dishes like chicken curry, goat curry, macaroni pie (squares of mac and cheese), and pholouries (a ubiquitous Trinidadian street snack of deep-fried, spiced-up chickpea fritters) with a pineapple chutney. The rotis, in particular, come in three versions: buss up shut (a plain paratha shredded to resemble a bust up shirt, hence the name), dhal puri, and sada puri (a puffed up bread). Pro tip: For burrito-style handling, ask for your roti wrapped with your choice of stuffing. You won’t go wrong with chicken stew, channa, potato, and pumpkin stews with a fiery pepper sauce." - Caroline Shin

Their lack of consistency and decent customer service (like many of the roti shops on Liberty Ave) are their downfall. Good taste and good quality can never be expected when coming here which really sucks because I really like the food when they do things right. On average, I would say they do things perfectly 60% of the times and mess up on something the other 40% of the time. It's either the channa is too salty or the bara is too oily or they pack everything in a stupid way and all the sauce spills everywhere or the people working there are rude, etc. Like if I order 10 doubles and want the bara and sauces to be packed separately, maybe don't give me the smallest container of sauce that you have and get mad when I ask for a bigger one? Where's the logic in that? Overall, I really don't enjoy coming here because I never know what to expect, but it's still my go-to because the doubles are better than the other places in the area. I prefer the roti from across the street though. I also don't want to overlook the fact that they received 58 violation points on their November 2022 restaurant inspection which is equivalent to a C grade. They got inspected again on December 1st, 2022 and received only 3 violation points which is a MASSIVE improvement and better than a lot of other restaurants, but I have extremely low expectations that they can maintain this grade since they've repeated this pattern before (according to the DOH records).

Extremely disappointed with the service. The cashier dude behind the counter was lazy, rude, and clearly has no sense of customer service. If I’m spending my hard-earned money, I expect to be treated with basic respect , not attitude. Let me remind you: you’re not the only roti shop on Liberty. Do better.

I’m so disappointed about the food. Was visiting from North Jersey- sat in 2 hours traffic and couldn’t wait to get doubles and food from this place to take home. However, after spending about $68 for food last evening,, realized it was spoiled. The pastries were also stale and I specifically asked if the chinese cakes were fresh and was assured it was delivered fresh by the gentleman behind the counter. Had to throw the slimy fried rice and stew chicken in the garbage. The curry goat and white rice were sour as well. My kitchen stunk from the smell 😢 I tried calling today but of course the number listed doesn’t work. Sadly, will not return and relay message to family living in Queens to do the same.

One of my new recent favorite Roti Shops to go to for carribean and Trinidadian food. The Roti Wraps are HUGE and they only $10. I usually get Stew Pork or Curry Duck wrapped in a Roti. The Aloo Pie and Doubles are $2.50 each. Potato Salad was $5 for a small. All the food was delicious and I go to this one from now. They have a few other locations in the area too. This one is my favorite since I take the A train. They have In door Seating but I usually take the food to go so I can enjoy it at home even better. It usually gets Crowded when an A train Arrives, so I kinda time going in in-between those times. If you like Roti and Trini food then you definitely have to try this place.

Terrible, terrible, terrible please do not eat here. Me and my grandma waited in the line for 10 minutes, they did not acknowledge us at all after trying to get their attention. Then let someone skip us. So they totally ignored us. Rude staff and they are prejudice and have a bad attitude. I DO NOT RECOMMEND.

Google
I prefer their dhalpuri over all the other west indian places in this area. They are conveniently located at the train stop and on a good day the food can be good. Service is usually subpar, which is typical of this type of establishment and food is not consistent. However it is better than its competition around. I do wish the chef who first started working with them when they opened was still there. If they were I would probably camp out there. It was amazing the first few weeks they opened.

As soon as you come off of the train station, you must stop here for a double and in some cases a quadruple! I also love there bake and salt fish. This is a place to stop in for a few small bites before you do your shopping or food tour of little Guyana 🇬🇾

Google
This is my first time coming here. I had a doubles and it was the best tasting ever. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Food is one of the most authentic Trini style, full of flavor, if you like spicy, doubles with roast pepper and shrimp is the best! Roti is always soft and fresh, nice staff. Clean appearance. A nice touch is clearview window where you can see roti being made

Yelp
The food here is satisfying and reasonably priced. The doubles are always fresh and delicious and they don't skimp on the filling like a lot of places in the area. Their roti is very good along with their stew chicken and curry goat. Some other dishes I've had from there is the pumpkin, spinach and okra which I loved and we also had the fried rice and bbq chicken which was very flavorful. My only complaint is perhaps the service could be a bit more friendly...no one wants to patronize an establishment where you are supporting them yet they always seem irritated or bothered by you.

Yelp
I came here to place an order for my granddaughter's party because I had previously tasted their roti skin and curry chicken at a previous event. I was impressed by the taste of the food. Everyone raved about the curry chicken and roti at the party. I will definitely bookmark this business for future visits.

Yelp
So my review is not for the food, food is good no issues. I was there this morning around eight, there's this one short lighter skin server that really upset me enough to come on here to address it. It's not the first, second, third, fourth time it's numerous times not just by me but by many. She's rude, obnoxious, no customer service skills, unpleasant . This morning my exact words were "please don't yell at me" . I was disgusted in many ways by this unpleasant service by her, Owners please address this, we love your establishment but we we are not going to tolerate this rude, unprofessional sever. Enough is enough with her, it's too many times now. She don't pay attention to what you're ordering , does what she wants , when you're addressing it with her, she starts yelling. Enlighten me how this is professional in customer service please. My next visit to this establishment will be , " I'm sorry , I'd like another server." Owners please address this , thank you The one star is due to the unacceptable server.

Yelp
When they first open it was on point. Now my food is always cold. Pholourie feels like rubber and dry. you can tell it wasnt fresh. The doubles use to be great, now very watery little flavor and food temp is always cold and that guys who works as the cashier is rude as hell. Looks like he is miserable being there. Better off going to trini delight.

Amanda N.

Yelp
Doubles were stale. They use teeny tiny Chana and the baras were like rubber. No good and service is garbage. When are these places gonna learn some hospitality?

Yelp
Last week as I was scarfing down a chimmichanga my dining partner brought up the thought that flatbreads, tortillas even pasta are -- for lack of a better term -- transports, transporting the focus of the meal to our awaiting mouths. I scoffed at this as folly. It's clearly as important to the culture and to the dish, right? But the more I reflected, the more it began to make sense as I was looking through peanut butter and jelly lenses. The flour Roti wrap is a fabulous transporter and the dusting of chickpea really sets it apart -- how I love West Indian cooking and the love is building as I'm eating. The flour Roti shell is so durable, easily keeping together the bone in chicken parts, not splitting no structural failures from start to unbuttoning of top button. The hot trays must have numbered near twenty-five and the beautiful stewed meats steam slowly releasing, the fragrances of the beautiful cultures spices -- all creating an all out assault on my food consumption sensory system, I treaded easy, I wanted so much to take one of everything home. There is so much more time to eat among the hot tin checkerboard, to come again and again and again.

Yelp
Usually don't come on liberty ave For anything, I try to avoid liberty At all cost. When I comes to doubles I usually go to triniciti, but was on liberty on Saturday, so decided to try tropical jade 3 doubles. The line were all the way to the back. Stood in the line. Ordered a triple doubles to try, upon getting my order I sat there to eat, let me tell you, you have to give credit when credit is due! The doubles was hella good I meant great, very tasty.l. I actually went back and ordered another one, it was Way better than trinciti who's losing their standards. Guys keep it up.

John R.

Yelp
Imagine buying a potato roti and you getting 2 pieces of potato. Big time robbery, first and last time going there. Will stick to my Singh's and Trinicity roti shop! Management of Tropical Jade 3, remember you are not the only roti shop in Queens!

Yelp
Prices are good compared to other restaurants in the area. Girls behind the counter are friendly but male cashier is a bit rude and standoffish. Food is very fresh, but unfortunately pretty much bland too. Double were generous and cheap but I've had better. Again, extremely bland tasting even with the little added tamarind sauce. I only ventured in here because Trini Delite was unexpectedly closed for the day--- do not plan on returning here as I prefer my food to have, well, some flavor. I left telling my husband the only reason the line was long today was probably due to TriniDelite being closed :/

Yelp
I come here weekly for their doubles, aloe pie and poulorie. Best in queens I must say. Use to go to trinciti for my doubles, but prefer doubles here as it is very tasty!

Yelp
Warning ,Beware,Don't be fool by the name Tropical Jade 3 ,should be name "No Returns, Buy at your own Risk " I bought a tray of Black Pudding ,when I open the tray at home to try it out I noticed a bad Oder coming out of tray. I didn't even taste it. I went back to return it cause I didn't I like how it smell. The cashier behind the counter said to me " I'm sorry ,but we don't give refunds for take out food" I asked to speak to the manager , Her reply was "There is no manager here " With this kind of customer service at this food establishment I wouldn't go there anymore . I just lost the my money for food I didn't even taste . I will follow my instincts next time . I will continue going to my favorite place SYBILS ,SYBILS SYBILS

Yelp
I came in this evening around 8:30 to grab a bite and I fell in love with their doubles. The ladies who work there were pretty friendly, the prices extremely affordable and the food was delicious. I ordered two doubles with everything and that only cost $2.50 and totally filled my stomach. The place was very clean as well and quite packed.

Yelp
Tried ordering delivery today from this restaurant... apparently they don't accept credit or debit cards Why offer delivery then

Roshni R.

Yelp
Food is good but the cashier is very rude ,nasty attitude . Some of the girls don't know how to put the food in d bowls it's very messy etc, especially when wrapping doubles, sauce dripping all over .I've been buying food there ever so often. It's a big turn off now

Nixx T.

Yelp
I used to order from the 108th branch and 121. I am usually satisfied with the food from this establishment but not so much this 118th off shoot. Came in here today and ordered the Chinese chicken fried rice . Let's just say the server was really skimping on the portion. Also, put 3 of the boniest parts of the chicken. Not worth $8. Then I order 2 Aloo (potato) pies with book Choi and pumpkin. A smattering of pumpkin was added to it but I did get a lot of pepper (that was generously added). Went to get rung up and was told $13.00 ok decent. Then the price went up to $18 When I asked how come, I was told they only charged for 1 of the Aloo pies. Seriously? $5 for veggie Aloo pie? I did not ask for a veggie roti smh Will not be purchasing here again Better product and price at Trincity Roti Shop instead. Lesson learned!

Yelp
Poor customer service. The staff is so hostile and aggressive towards customers. Their food isn't that great. It was watery and flavorless.

Giselle S.

Yelp
My family really enjoyed eating here. I say this because my kids absolutely loved eating the roti, curry & doubles. The curry chicken and doubles were very good I would definitely eat here again!!!

D H.

Yelp
Servers are rude to customers. They need to be more organized. The server should not be yelling from the front of the line to help the customers in the back. The doubles is very oily. Overall the food looks good and anything we've ordered of good, too bad the service is bad.

Sean B.

Yelp
I always go to this spot when i go to NY but this time the roti was not good at all it was thin and hard not like bus up shut should be. I was disappointed because i always get good good there

Myles P.

Yelp
I've only had their doubles and cassava balls which are both very tasty! I will try one of their roti dishes soon.

Yelp
Outstanding and authentic food - new location but better than some of the older places. Must check out if in the area - Trini here
