"Beloved Texas grocery chain HEB has expanded its in-store restaurant offerings to include freshly made tacos. The restaurant is called True Texas Tacos, found in the supermarket at 17238 Bulverde Road in San Antonio. True Texas Tacos has a menu of 12 tacos, with options for breakfast tacos. The meaty tacos include brisket (also available on breakfast tacos), barbacoa, carne guisada, picadillo, and beef and chicken fajita. There’s the option for corn or flour tortillas, as well as add-ins like beans or bacon. All tacos are under $3, but per usual, guacamole is extra. The entire taco menu is served until 2 p.m. Unfortunately, an HEB representative said there are no plans to expand True Texas Tacos to Austin yet, but the city can still hope." - Erin Russell

Wow! I have walked past this place a million times and finally trying it out. Exceptional! The chopped Beef sandwich was outstanding. Mac and cheese was great and very cheesy. The greens....yum! Highly recommend.

Google
Very disappointed. Order to-go half pound of brisket, rec'd a slice and a half. This is the 2nd time. When this place first opened the portion was adequate, lately it has changed and cost went up.

Google
Been here many times, and enjoy these delicious meals they prepared, One of my favorites is the sliced natural brisket sandwich, some times I ask for the larger one and extra spicy BBQ sauce. Keep the good work guys you really rock❗

Went today during lunch time. There was not a long line. Service was pretty descent, food came out under 8 minutes. The food was warm and very tasty. Eric the server was polite and professional. Definitely would come back here.

Google
This was our first time here. We're new to the area and never knew it existed ! Well, it was definitely worth the drive. I had the traditional turkey sandwich with potato salad, and my husband had the Texas brisket cheesesteak and mac and cheese. I got their strawberry lemonade, and my husband had sweet tea. The food was yummy . We got our order quick as well. It wasn't busy either. It's conveniently placed by the HEB. Well worth the drive and plan on going back.

Google
Today was picture perfect! We asked for lean brisket and that's exactly what we got! Perfect amount of fixings Great job will be back! Tip: if you stand right there by facing the kitchen they'll make your order right.. they need to be supervised sometimes No their not happy employees BUT WHO IS, RIGHT?!?!

Google
Ok, don't mean to hammer this place because we go there EVERY Thursday. Billy is there to get my beer awaiting take out and is fantastic! But I don't know why the meat portion on my wife's potato was super skimpy. I've never seen it this light before. Also, I asked for pickles, it's on my receipt, and nope. I won't stop going, but hope it's better, and I'll definitely check before I leave.

Google
Surprise, surprise.... Like all things H-E-B, the BBQ is more than decent too. Aways wonderful service.

Yelp
I was surprised by this grocery store bbq drive through. Food tasted fresh, flavorful, and fulfilling!

Yelp
I stopped in to purchase a pound of sliced turkey as I have in the past. This was my third attempt to get what I truly wanted. I asked specifically for my turkey to be sliced thin and again it didn't happen. To add I picked up my order and I decided not to check it and I voiced I would be disappointed if again it wasn't sliced thin. The moment I said this a worker from the back made a bold loud comment and said go have a nice day. I should have checked and gotten a refund because as I found out it was not sliced thin in fact it was thicker than I have ever purchased. This is it I will purchase elsewhere from somewhere who values my business The cashier that took my order stated she would go to the back and let them know. As she did after my order was placed whether she made my request known is still a mystery.

Yelp
Good ribs! Overall this place is decent for what it it. It's a fast casual barbecue spot to grab a quick bite to eat. I tried a few different items. The ribs, sausage, and brisket with sides. The brisket was ok but some pieces were overally marbled and almost too fatty. The sandwhich was filling and full of flavor from the queso and jalepenos. The brisket was similar to Bill Millers. I kept reading the ribs were good so I grabbed a plate for dinner. The sausage was good and reminded me of the sausage sticks at Bucees. The ribs were my favorite. They had a dry rub and a slight taste of smoke. They were tender and the plate gave a good portion that was filling with the sausage. I enjoyed the creamed corn and potato salad. The Jalepeno cornbread was very dense and I actually just threw it away. Overall not a bad spot for what it is. This is not the barbecues spot you go to that has mouth watering brisket, ribs or amazing sausage. It's another Bill Millers fast barbecue spot. It's quick, good and a great go to if you want to not cook for the night. The only real drawback is the price, it is a bit steeper than Bill Millers.

Yelp
Smelled amazingly smoky long before I entered! It is adjacent to an H-E-B. Not to crowded inside at 12:30 but did have alot of customers inside. 3/4 lbs of brisket and one sausage was $27 with a medium drink. Probably should have gotten 1/2 lbs but can always take some home. Took about 10 minutes to get my food. I did not think the meat was too fatty as some reviews stated. I do agree with the comments about the salt. Some pieces were awesome and some seemed heavily salted. Not sure why but the salt was a bit excessive. The sausage was good but the skin was a bit tough and chewy. The brisket had a good bark and a nice smoke ring. Overall it was pretty good. I was surprised by HEB bar b que. I would eat here again.

Danielle A.

Yelp
I always make a stop at True Texas BBQ during my shopping trips to H-E-B. It's incredibly convenient, and the food never disappoints! The brisket, turkey, and beef chop are all delicious and cooked to perfection. They also have a great selection of beers on tap, which is a nice touch. If you're a fan of saving while enjoying great BBQ, don't forget to sign up for their weekly coupons--totally worth it!

Chris T.

Yelp
So yummy BBQ right inside H‑E‑B. The brisket is so good. I wish they would offer samples for those that have never tried their food. The brisket was juicy, tender, fall apart, and smokey. You don't need sauce but I got some. The sauce is nothing to rave about. I got a bit or regular and spicy I prefer the spicy. Great customer service!

Lauren G.

Yelp
This restaurant is attached to the HEB PLUS. What got me in here was the bbq smell permeating the entire store. I had heard great things about it and it did not disappoint. I ended up using the drive through and it was so convenient after I had just put all my groceries in the car. The pulled pork sandwich was great and was very reasonably priced.the convenience is unmatched.

John M.

Yelp
I got ribs and brisket. They were very good. The price value was good. The staff was very friendly. I went through the drive through. Very fast.

Thomas B.

Yelp
Some of the best BBQ in town. The brisket is always flavorful with a nice bark. The ribs are generally tender and meaty with a similar good taste. I'm not a fan of their BBQ beans, but potato salad is good. For dessert, the peach cobbler and banana pudding are amazingly good. When you don't have time to do serious BBQ in town at places like 2M Smokehouse, True Texas will hit the mark.

Inga C.

Yelp
There is a True Texas BBQ under construction at our neighborhood HEB, so we made a field trip to visit an up-and-running outlet across town. The meats are the real deal! The smoked turkey is juicy, the brisket is rich and smoky, and the sausage is peppery. I wanted to try the spicer sauce but the dispenser (nice automation!) was empty. We are looking forward to having an outlet closer to home.

Sean D.

Yelp
So first time trying this place as I am new to San Antonio and I have to say that I love H‑E‑B lol so cool how they have a BBQ spot right at the same location. I enjoyed the food here and was pleasantly surprised at how good the brisket was but not so happy about the portions. The service was very friendly and quick with our order. I'll definitely come back but might get something else.

Molly A.

Yelp
Usually drive thru here as it is convenient. We order the bake potatoes and get them with sausage or brisket. Never disappointed!

Samantha B.

Yelp
When an elusive BBQ truck wasn't parked in the spot we thought it would be, my group decided to pivot and have dinner at HEB instead- and we are all glad we did! Five of us walked in on a Friday night and had about a three minute wait in line. Ordering was a breeze and we waited about six minutes for our food, which was just the right amount of time to fill up our drinks and grab some sauce at the self serve station. Once our food arrived, the most obvious sign of a great meal struck...nobody was talking! We were all too busy chowing down on the delicious plates to get a word out other than "mmmm!" We managed to do some food swapping so we could try more items. I can attest to the baked potato (I am not a huge BBQ fan so I always love to see a good potato on the menu) and sausage link, both hit exactly the spot and the HEB BBQ sauce was the cherry on top. As for the mac and cheese, it fell just a bit flat. At a BBQ place you expect punches of big flavor, but the noodles and the cheese tasted like they could use a little umph. Once we got a handle on our hunger, we proceeded to have a thirty minute long conversation all about HEB. Our favorite stores, products, and why we love HEB so much. I tell you there is something about HEB that turns you into a cult follower and we were all in! As if to reward us for such a perfect evening, as we headed back to the car we were reminded there is no better place in the city to watch the sunset than straight from the HEB parking lot. Fantastic experience all around, I will (obviously) be back!

Yelp
True Texas BBQ catered to our organization of 450 people for our 4th of July BBQ event. They didn't disappoint whatsoever. The Store manager came 2 times to make sure that everything was exactly as we needed, and when we noticed we were going to need more food, she jumped into action and took care of us. Ja'nette went above and beyond and her customer service to our organization was tremendous. As the coordinator of the event, the food was top notch, and we can't wait to have them cater to our organization again. Thank you to Ja'nette and her team for making our BBQ event experience one to not forget! Rhonda Sams HR Coordinator for Lancer Worldwide

Yelp
I was not satisfied with the response I received on my complaint that I had previously submitted. When the online menu stated it included smoked chicken on the party packed. I called to inquire as to why my pack was missing the chicken, the young man stated we don't cook chicken anymore. Then I receive a call about my complaint and all I get was that she would speak to their marketing department. Well boo this did not help.

Yelp
True Texas BBQ is not going to be in the ranks of the top tier Texas BBQ in town but it is a very affordable, quick option that is miles ahead of any of the fast food BBQ places. The prices are very fair and the food is always on point. True Texas BBQ is always a go to for my wife and I when we just cant seem to figure out what we want for dinner and we don't want to spend an arm and a leg.

Ruthie W.

Yelp
We were helping a friend and her family by providing them dinner and my husband looked into bbq places and the reviews from this place looked great so we thought to give it a go. Our HEB is also about to have a True Texas BBQ so this would be a good preview. We ordered the same foods for our friends as the food we brought home for ourselves - pork ribs, beef ribs, moist brisket, potato salad, and roasted chicken. Our friends were already texting us that this was the best bbq they've ever had as we were driving home. They provided both sweet bbq sauces and spicy bbq sauces to us. Sweet was definitely good for me and the spicy was definitely good for my husband. The beef rib is ginormous! The picture does not do justice. It is a foot long! Surely more food than I could finish in one sitting. From what I could try, it was all delicious. We ordered way too much food and my husband ended freezing some of it for later. It is seriously great bbq and I'm excited the one 2 minutes from us is about to open!

Yelp
Very impressive BBQ for a grocery store! Seriously, this place has a unique and creative menu, loaded with the typical BBQ joint eats, but also unique items, like a brisket biscuit and their seasonal cobbler. I tried a couple of meats in my visit; their brisket and some sausage. Both were smoked very nicely and flavorful. The sausage was pork & beef, but didn't have anything else in it and that was fine, because the flavors were great just the way it was. Their beans were very saucy and flavorful... Cornbread was nice, but a little on the boring side. Their jalapeños were really good and pickled perfectly to still be crisp, but not very spicy. For dessert, their seasonal cobbler when I went, was Mexican Chocolate and it was excellent!! Service was very friendly and very helpful. I really enjoyed this visit and would return!

Laura T.

Yelp
This place is ok. Over priced which is typical of who opened it. Ribs were rubbery and potato salad was just ok. Don't waste your time or money.

Daniel L.

Yelp
This was my first time ordering from TTBBQ. I ordered two of the holiday meals for my family's Christmas Eve gathering. You get ALOT for the money. Especially compared to the competition (Who I normally order from). But the food was disappointing. The mashed potatoes and green bean casserole were good. The stuffing was OK, but odd. It had a smoky flavor like it was barbecued as well. The turkey was the worst. it was crusted with salt and pepper. It was so salty, no one ate it (good thing we also had ham and tamales). I have been trying to use the left overs in soups and such as to dilute to spice. I know this was their first venture into the holiday meal market, but it'll be the last time I order a holiday meal from them.

Yelp
We were driving across the country and stopped in San Antonio for the night. We thought since we were in Texas, we should get Texas BBQ. We wanted to find some place that was close by for delivery. So we picked this place. The menu looked good and they had cornbread, which was what I was after. My husband got the chopped natural-brisket sandwich. I got the 2-meat plate, which came with 2 sides. I also got a separate side of corn bread. The two meats I chose were pulled pork and lean sliced brisket. I chose the green bean and salad as a side. I honestly wasn't impressed with the green beans. The meats though, were pretty good. The brisket had a nice smokiness to it and the pulled pork was very tender. The cornbread I think, was the best part. Not only was it a size-able piece, it was moist and soft, and had pieces of something that I couldn't identify. It was an ok place, we weren't too impressed with this place. Plus my husband got a can of coke and they forgot it.

Jacob H.

Yelp
So good, yall! Super fast and there's no wait! I'm in love! It's been pretty hard to find a bbq spud. I'm In heaven

Tish D.

Yelp
So delicious and so convenient. Staff was friendly and food was affordable. Brisket and Ribs for the win!

Dylan S.

Yelp
The bbq is so good especially when you get the plate with ribs along with brisket beans and Mac and cheese plus the best bbq sauce for dipping and topping.

Carlos V.

Yelp
Decided to walk out when the only had 1 of 5 items I came in for. Out of chopped brisket at 3:45 on a Sunday? Two side items on the website menu no longer on the menu at the store, plus they ran out of a 3rd side. Pretty bad all the way around.

Nathalie C.

Yelp
HEB knows no limits of awesomeness! Amazing BBQ concept and outstanding service! Best BBQ in town!

Chuck H.

Yelp
I have tried most of the bbq places/trucks in the northern half of San Antonio and I think the HEB food is the most consistent of all and tastes better than most. The beans are horrible and they got rid of the bags of chips so that limits some of the standard side dishes. Always spotless and fairly fast service. Coupons available online.

Marsha M.

Yelp
Really disappointing. I ordered 1/2 lb each of turkey and brisket to go. When i got home, i only had two slices of each. What i got was good but was definitely NOT 1/2 a pound. We also ended up throwing away the cole slaw because it just tasted nasty. Unfortunately we live too far away to go back to get our order corrected. Waste of $50!

Jamie S.

Yelp
I may not be a native Texan, but I am a proud transplant that has been here for +10 years. After road tripping around the state for a decade I am so happy to have a good bbq place down the street. I really enjoy getting bbq here. My kids love it too. I split the 3 meat plate with my tiny people and it is plenty. The turkey is always moist, the sausage is flavorful but not too spicy, and the brisket is good and not dry. My favorite sides are the Mac and cheese and the potato salad. I am super picky about potato salad, I am spoiled after my mom's, and I do not say this lightly because 9/10 I do not like. But this is my favorite potato salad in town!! My bigger half also got the special this last visit of the jalapeño popper sandwich, and dang it was big, hot, delicious and was photogenic. I loved that it had the raspberry spread with cream cheese in addition to the bbq and jalapeño, it rounded out the whole sandwich, it was a fun ride. If you are in a pickle and starving, just need to eat some good grub, need to go grocery shopping and know better than to go on an empty stomach or just want som good Q come on over. I bring my kiddos all the time or sneak in for a quick lunch date with the hubs, or just buy a side of potato salad for my splurge.

Roger H.

Yelp
I tried this BBQ spot out 2 weeks ago and I'm very biased when it comes to bbq. I am one of the best pit masters in Texas and I have been featured multiple times on SA Live. When I went for the first time and ordered their brisket my lord it was the best brisket that I have had compared to mine. It was moist juicy and flavorful hands down a perfect 10. I went back a second time during the week and had their brisket and pork ribs. Trust me when I say this it did not disappoint. I went back a 3rd time had brisket, ribs, Mac and cheese and once again it was in point for the 3 peat. When I say this stop by and check them out they even have a drive through. The service was amazing, inside was clean. Oh on the 3rd time I saved a pound of brisket and half a slab of ribs for lunch the next day and reheated and dam it was still good that's when you k ow bbq is at its best.

Joshua M.

Yelp
I have had a lot of bbq in my time and always looking for the best of the best. I can say that True Texas BBQ truly stands above the rest, their ribs are fall off the bone slow cooked Smokey flavored goodness. I really have not had ribs anywhere in my life that were that delicious, the best I've ever had! Brisket is absolutely incredible with juicy smokey goodness in every bite! I cannot stress enough bough just how delicious this is and I hope you don't go to the over hyped bbq places downtown, because all of the flavor you will ever need is found right here in True Texas BBQ

T C.

Yelp
The food was ok. I am not a true fan but the sandwich was reasonable priced for the portion. I took of stars as a result of the fountain drink machine being broken and the extensive wait for the food.

Sarah L.

Yelp
Great bbq and sides and deserts you can't go wrong, quick service whether you walk in or go through the drive through, and the restaurant itself is lovely inside and super clean. We have come multiple times and will continue to come back

Kimberly K.

Yelp
The smoked chicken here is the best. I'm not usually a chicken person but this is the most tender, flavorful BBQ chicken I've probably had. The brisket is also great here. I like the rub they use which makes the ends get that perfect seasoned flavor. On Friday's they have beef "Dino" ribs available for $20 a piece while supplies last. They do sell out by the evening sometimes so get there early or call ahead to check. They are huge, messy, and oh so delicious but be warned there is quite a bit of fat attached to the meat. If you're into leaner cuts this probably won't be your thing. H-E-B has definitely proved that they can compete in the Texas BBQ world!

Stefany V.

Yelp
Where do I start? I love HEB grocery store, their products and quality are great. Now they've opened a barbecue restaurant attached to the store where they cook up the brisket, pork, chicken, and sides that they sell? This is genius. Their proteins are high quality and all natural, smoked on site, and both sides and desserts are made fresh in house daily. Shared a 3 meat plate with 2 sides and added on sausage to be able to try the majority of the menu: fatty brisket is great, smoked turkey is juicy, ribs (surcharge with combo) had good pull and flavor, sausage was just a touch spicy. Unfortunately they were out of the mac and cheese and cobbler I wanted, but my dining companion liked the slaw and their beans are out of this world, stewed with brisket and tomatoes. Maybe I've been out of Texas too long, but this counter inside a grocery store is putting out product that's competitive with what established barbecue restaurants are selling- which isn't a surprise, because HEB does not compromise their quality. I'm a fan, and will likely be back because the location is so convenient. TIP: Sign up for their text club (see store signage) for a free dessert.

Sam H.

Yelp
Well. There it is. Four stars for a grocery store bbq eatery. In my defense. HEB at one time had some dang good Chinese food, cooked right there in store. I had the three meat plate. $14 and some change. All the meats were delicious. Seasoned perfectly and smoked even better. The sides were very good also. Mac and cheese and potato salad. They were out of my first choice. Jalapeño Beans. The sweet tea was perfect and for a large at $2 it was priced just right. I sent in a text and received the banana pudding for free. It too was good but didn't taste like many I've had before the pudding was more of a fluff but still tasty. Will I come back? Yes.

D J.

Yelp
We usually love their lean brisket, but today was a day of disappointments. Decided to try their brisket enchiladas - first of all it doesn't look like advertised at all, weird and small (see pic), second - 8$ for this mess and tiny portion is too much, last and not least - food poisoning for the rest of the day. You guys need to pick up your game or loose customers. Also drive through was closed in the middle of the lunch hours for whatever reason.

Kathy D.

Yelp
We ordered loaded Mac and cheese and got load potatoe.. we also ordered two portions of Jalapeño cornbread and got burnt pieces.

Omar H.

Yelp
Is an awesome place I love the bbq there plus is my neighbor HEB unfortunately I had a bad racist experience with a persona named Cara F witch shows a disrespect service because I was speaking spanish but I ordered with her in English she MAKE ME!!! repeat the order 3 times because she couldn't understand me but her sarcasm was really open Thank you for your bad service Cara F I wish you can find a better department to suit you with you personality

Gail E.

Yelp
So, what can I say? When in Rome? But tonight, it was more like, "when in Texas, you eat bbq!" Brisket to be exact. Was this the best brisket in Texas? No, I doubt it. It wasn't as moist as I would like it. That being said, it was still darn good! That fat cap was delightful! Flavor was spot on too! Just could use a little more moisture! But so yummy none the less!

Derrick C.

Yelp
BEEF RIBS! If you've shopped at this HEB then you've smelled True Texas BBQ. Don't be afraid to succumb folks! True Texas BBQ ain't playing! At the very least not when it comes to the beef ribs served up on Fridays after 5pm. These are the biggest, absolute juiciest, tenderest, most fall off the bonliest beef ribs this side o' the Mason-Dixon. Did I mention biggest? Their $20/rib price tag is money well spent in the name of delicious BBQ gluttony. Cest bon!

Deric T.

Yelp
I was craving some BBQ and since it was just down the road I figured, why not. The service was good and the food was out in 5 minutes so the timing was good. Then I got to taste the 3 sandwiches which seemed to be made by a kid. Sliced brisket sandwich was 4/10, smoked sausage was a 2/10, and the pulled pork was not even edible it tasted so bad. It was sad because I really wanted to like it.

Ruth W.

Yelp
The Brisket was very tender and tasty, better than I expected. The Ribs were tasty, sort of dry. Neither had BBQ Sauce, nor did they offer it. I was very disappointed with my sides. The potato salad wasn't the traditional kind, like HEB's mustard potato salad. I couldn't eat it even after adding sweet relish & mustard. The Brisket Beans were a lost cause. There were long strands of Brisket and Bean juice; it was hard to find the beans. So that was very disappointing.

Alex S.

Yelp
Who knew shopping could be so much fun with a legit and convenient BBQ joint located right inside HEB. Let's start out with the Ribs! You know the ribs are going to be amazing when the meat slides right off the bone! The Chicken, Turkey, & lean Brisket we're all cooked to perfection and the baked Potato with Chopped Brisket was heaven in my mouth. What I enjoy about the place was the fact that it was supremely clean and the service was top notch! They also have regular combos and family combos for those that wanna grab a quick dinner for the family after stopping to get groceries. Make sure and check them out! You'll thank me for it later!

Marty D.

Yelp
This place was voted best bbq in Texas Monthly magazine, so we decided to give it a try. It was pretty good. We only had some brisket sandwiches with potato salad and Mac and cheese but it was very good. I will definitely ge back to try other item, like the ribs. Hopefully they'll be really good too.

Lauren B.

Yelp
I was thinking it was a little weird they didn't give us any barbecue sauce with our order, but we got delivery, so maybe they just forgot. The food was pretty good. Not amazing, not bad, but solid (sauce would have probably changed it up a bit). Not my favorite style of potato salad, but still good! Mac was pretty good, not bland, meat was smokey and tender (brisket and ribs, obviously). Cobbler was very good - I usually don't like cherry, but this was buttery and flavorful.

Jenny T.

Yelp
Tuesday Night $2.00 Beer Night and scrumptious Brisket, lean or extra moist with all the popular sides like potato salad, baked beans, creamed corn and mac-cheese at reasonable prices. (Vegetarians will love the huge baked potatoes since it's a great meal with salad! H‑E‑B rocks.

Ron R.

Yelp
This was easily the worst rib plate I've ever had. Even the cornbread was burnt and dry. The only good thing that I ate here was the coleslaw. Bill Miller barbecue is 1 million times better than this for ribs. I should've gone there. The ribs were overcooked and had hardly any meat on them. Do you think that go inside at H-E-BAnd get some decent ribs to cook.

Jennifer M.

Yelp
Just picked up a family order Yes, I did order the fatty brisket but it's all fat! And extremely salty.. forgot the bread :(... Potato salad is more of a German salad ... Bland.. coleslaw is bland... Hate to say it but, Bills is better... so sad!!!
