8 Best Restaurants in Cary, North Carolina | Eater Carolinas

"Tucked in a brick strip mall is a gem of a seafood restaurant, Try Seafood. Belly up to the fishing boat-themed cash register and order fried shrimp or fish, blackened catfish with veggies, or one of the fried combos for a variety. And don’t skip on the perfectly fried hushpuppies. Regina and Harold Scott’s Try Seafood food truck is still around town, too, but don’t miss the brick-and-mortar experience. The Black- and woman-owned restaurant’s nautical motif and sizzling sound of the next order hitting the hot oil will transport customers to the seafood joints on the coast." - Sarah Day Owen Wiskirchen

Yelp
Some of the best fried catfish I ever ate! You will love the atmosphere and all the other foods that they offer. You can get two pieces of very hot (straight out of the fryer) catfish plus delicious coleslaw for only $9.50 as one of several lunch specials from 11am to 3 pm anyday except Tuesday - they are closed on Tuesdays. They are on the side of the buildings that face Walnut Street. My maps direction had me turning to go to the back side of that shopping center and I could not find TriSeafood at all. One can look out the window and see Bojangles across Walnut Street. This is at the intersection of Walnut and Tryon Road. Delicious foods!!!!!!!! Did I mention that they also have a Food Truck and they cater!!!! L Hudson

Yelp
Their catfish is also very good, and their hush puppies are fantastic! Service is always good here.

Yelp
Lovely service & great food. I dined in on a Sunday afternoon and will definitely be back. The shrimp basket was delicious and a hearty serving with well seasoned fries. The interior is clean and has a few tables to enjoy your food as well as an outdoor seating table. The service was excellent, the woman taking my order was so kind and another member of the staff (maybe the owner/manager/shift lead) was welcoming and even brought out some sauces he thought I would like (I did!!). Overall great experience. Two people next to me ordered that rasta pasta and it smelled AMAZING! Ill be trying that next time. See you then!!

Yelp
The environment was solid and very welcoming. The service was at an adequate speed and time. I wish the seats were a little farther apart. The crab poppers are very good and solid price. The quesadillas were a little too cheesy for me. I couldn't enjoy the salmon and onions and peppers as much as I would like. Also the fries could have been in some type of seasoning. This is a solid place to check out and worth a look.

Yelp
On April 8th we tried TrySeafood Cary. We are from North Raleigh but it was listed as one of the top 8 Cary restaurants by the Axios Raleigh newsletter. Its a bit of a drive from North Raleigh but the crossroads mall area where they are was quite accessible. Actually after you get off the exit its down just beyond at the intersection of Tryon and Holly Springs Roads so not so crazy as crossroads proper. The strip mall is quite accessible and very easy to park right in front which was great. This is another in the series of great family restaurants we are finding. Like the others, there is a strong focus on seasoning and flavors. This seems to be a distinguishing characteristic of small family place vs non family restaurants. As soon as we walked in the husband was there to greet us and explain everything. He was excited about what his wife was cooking and make it so welcoming. I quickly settled on the grilled blackened catfish with mixed vegetables. My wife got the 3 piece whiting with fries as well as the 3 fried oysters. $46+taxes and tip. Excellent flavor and such a welcoming environment. Well worth the drive which honestly was not that bad.

Yelp
10/10 Everything we tried was delicious. Like seriously cooked to protection! Even the side items were rockstars. The fried and blackened catfish were both amazing. The collards has to be from grandmas kitchen and I was so glad it had Turkey instead of pork (thank you)! And the seafood rice had lots of flavor. My fiancé didn't love the Rasta pasta but that's okay because I had lunch work the next day. Would highly recommend and will definitely return. The inside as very clean and I love the bright colors and cute decor on the walls. The owners were super sweet and very patient with me & They gave great suggestions for my next visit. Another customer was waiting with me and told me the food is consistently good!

Yelp
Went around lunch time Saturday drove an hour from a recommendation it was worth the drive. The owner took care of us very friendly and made sure we were comfortable and took great care of us. I will definitely be back everything I tried was delicious down to the hush puppies and lemonade.

Yelp
Great food, friendly service. Everything was fresh and super tasty, a good sized portion for the money! And the honey butter cornbread is TO DIE FOR!!!!! Very satisfied, will definitely be adding this place to the regular rotation.

Yelp
I loved this restaurant for multiple reasons. I love seafood and the food was amazing. It was flavorful and well balanced. The Rasta pasta had plenty of spices in it, making it complex. The spice is notable but won't kill you. The crab hush puppies are unique and delicious! The wings weren't frail but rather a good size. On top of the amazing food, the service was top notch. The owners are personable, answer your questions with enthusiasm, and really believe in their food. This is a casual restaurant but it's nice. It's not the largest space but there is inside and outside seating. It'll be great for a date or for a family dinner. It should be noted that they have Turkey wing and lamb chop specials on the weekends.

Yelp
The portions were generous which was great however, everything was HEAVILY seasoned--and I like seasoned food but this was way way too much. Just need to ease up a bit and it would be a go to spot. I had whiting, rice and collard greens.

Yelp
I really want to give 5 Stars, but I have two big knocks. We just visited here Sunday, 11/26, for my wife's birthday. We have 7 in our family. The customer service is great! We were served by the owner and a waitress. They were both nice the entirety of our meal and we were seated immediately. The food is great! The seafood is fresh and the taste and quantity are good. We had the calamari, crab poppers, and honey cornbread for apps. All were very good. Then we had the Cajun Steam Pot (for 2-3), the Jerk Feast (for 2-3), and a 16 piece wings for our entrees. The size of the wings is great! The size of the pots were average, but taste was on point. My family likes hot, I don't, but the heat was tolerable. My two knocks are price and the paper plates. I'm not so boujee that I can't eat off of paper plates, but if I'm going to, then the experience changes, and thus the cost should be commiserate. The paper plates and plastic cups were a lesser issue than the plastic utensils, because it's nearly impossible to eat crabs and seafood with a plastic fork. The second knock is that my bill was just under $400 for 7 people, which was $340 pre-tip. Again, to clarify and to give credit where credit is due, the customer service and food are great! But to pay nearly $400 to eat off of paper plates at a takeout style restaurant, is a lot. We will certainly return, but probably takeout from their lunch menu. Kudos to the business owners for creating a welcoming spot with great food!

Yelp
Went here for the grand opening of the Cary Downtown park so as to be expected it was very busy! I ordered the chicken wings fries and lemonade and I thought the price was pretty reasonable for the wings and fries at $14 dollars. All the food was full of flavor for me. They use a spicy seasoning for the fries which might not be the best if you are getting the fries for little ones but for me it was really good. The signs were nice and crispy and flavorful. I did get the sweet bang sauce which was spicy. I wanted to note they don't dip the wings in sauce they drizzle it over the wings so they aren't too saucy so if you are a sauce person just keep that in mind. They were perfect for me with not too much sauce. The service was where they lost a star, although friendly I had to repeat my sauce for my wings about 3 times. I think they were just overwhelmed with the big crowds. I do also think they could have done a better job of putting the food out, I had a long wait and I felt like some people who ordered after me got their food first. Although seafood might take a shorter amount of time than wings so perhaps that is why, but it seemed a little disorganized. I will say the food was great and I will definitely be back maybe not on a huge event day.

Yelp
Simple lunch portions of 8 oysters and 4 shrimp which were served with 3 different sauces, lemon slice, all on a bed of lettuce lined with London newspaper. Light and Crunchy breader was tasty. The three sauces were contrasting and different flavors. Pricing was high for what you get but interesting and tasty Definitely will be back.

Yelp
Visited this place for the first time today with family and it won't be the last. Everything from the food, service and cleanliness of this establishment was impressive. The owner was nice and really appreciated our business. Now about the food. They have the best fried catfish and Mac & Cheese in the area and my 6 yr old son agrees. If you are in that area you should give this place a try as you will not be disappointed.

Yelp
I have a new favorite southern seafood restaurant to enjoy now. Try came highly recommended by my close friend and fellow yelp elite. We are equally as picky about where we dine. I was famished and in no mood to fire up the stove this evening. So I ordered in. This place was excellent. All seafood is not created equally. Delivery took about under an hour. I decided on the whiting sandwich which comes with 3 extra large pieces of whiting fish, lemon wedge and 1 piece of wheat bread, Macaroni and Cheese and collard greens. The portions are large here. Plenty left over to enjoy for dinner and tomorrow's lunch. Their recipe for macaroni and cheese is one of the best I've had since relocating here. Very similar to my mom's recipe. The collard greens are just as tasty. I will most definitely return for dinner plates. I enjoyed everything.

Yelp
Food and service were outstanding. Talked to the owners and the wait staff. All very friendly people. Everything we ate was seasoned well, hot and so good. We will definitely be going to this spot on a regular basis.

Yelp
I went on 05/10/24. The service was quick. My husband's catfish and coleslaw were seasoned well and tasty. My son's rasta pasta was delicious. However, my shrimp and grits was not good at all. The portion size was great but the grits and shrimp had NO SEASONING!! The grits had absolutely no salt. The grits and shrimp tasted like cheesy water. My hubby said the broccoli they had in the middle smelled foul. Super disappointed in this dish since it cost $15 and I ended up having to eat part of my family's dinner. I will not order that again.

Yelp
I am super excited for everyone to discover this place like we did because this place is a gem! After seeing the quality of their food and menu, this restaurant is bound to blow up. The restaurant is conveniently located in a shopping center near crossroads with indoor seating. The original is located in New York, and the couple Scott & Gina who own it blessed us with their second location in Cary. Also, great prices and huge portions. For starters, the menu is very large. Some items on it include fried rice, sandwiches, pasta, crab legs, quesadillas, and all sorts of fish that you can get cooked any way you want. And that's not even half. No matter what kind of food you like there's an option for everybody here so you can never go wrong. The owner Scott was super helpful and friendly. He walked us through the whole menu and gave us great recommendations. Good service goes a really long way. Over two visits, we were able to try the cornbread, mac and cheese, grits, shrimp po boy, banana pudding, collards, yams, fried rice, fries, fried fish and shrimp basket, snapper, and crab cakes. I was also craving a cheesesteak but with salmon (not on the menu) and they were able to make me a great one. I promise once you get to see the menu you'll be planning your order for next time. It is veryyyyy rare for a restaurant with this many different menu options to exceed at every item, but they did. We didn't have a single complaint about any item we ordered and everything was hot, fresh, very flavorful, and satisfying. ****If you have a sweet tooth the cornbread and banana pudding is a must**** We also heard great things about the jerk salmon burger, and their empanadas and fried snapper caught my eye so we'll definitely be back!

Yelp
Amazing hidden gym for seafood in the Tryon Woods shopping center where the Harris Teeter is. We loved their perfect Blackened Catfish, Lamb Chops & Grits, and Crab Poppers. Catfish was cooked perfectly. The lamb chops have this glaze which was beyond good, craving them as I type this review. Crab poppers were really good too, mix between crab and hush puppies. The Honey Butter Cornbread is the best I've ever had, so don't skip on getting it, it's like a mix between cornbread and cake. Food comes out hot and the owners are awesome and check if everything is satisfactory. Must try if you're in the Raleigh/Cary area. Check out @raleating on Instagram & TikTok for recommendations on Triangle food spots!

Yelp
Great food! Owner is an amazing man. Food is always delicious and hot. It is a small business and when it gets busy, it gets busy, but the food is worth the wait. Very large portions and when I say shrimp is huge and chicken wings. That they are! Highly recommend. Support local

Yelp
Tryseafood met my expectations. The menu matched the food I received. The food is delicious 5 out 5. The service was great. The staff is energetic, polite, professional, and ready to serve customers. They did not fall short on the food or the service. My food was out in under 15 minutes. The food is prepared fresh. I had the salmon quesadilla, which was loaded with bite-size salmon chunks that were falling out of the wrap. Very flavorful quesadilla. Everything was piping hot. I wanted the collards but It was sold out. Scott recommended the Mac and cheese and I wasn't disappointed. The Mac and cheese were creamy and delicious. I think I'd prefer to take it out the next time. It's very small and it gets busy. I will come again and I've already shared my experience with my friends and family seeking good seafood items like this in Cary.

Yelp
Service was excellent the girl was very nice when we walked in and very helpful. The food was good. I ordered a surf and turf with catfish and wings which was excellent. My sides Were mixed veggies which consisted of broccoli, corn and potatoes. They needed more seasoning. I thought they would have been sautéed but they were steamed which was fine just needed much more seasoning. I also ordered the turkey collards. They were good I wish they had more meat since they are called turkey collards. Overall great experience and I will be back for more.

Yelp
My mother in law liked it. I didn't dine in, but looks chill and relaxed. Eat quick, get in, get out. It's in a shopping mall with Harris Teeter, Walgreens, and I definitely got a little turned around. Other than that, food smells yum. Service was cool. I ordered online for a pick up.
google avatar

Chrisie L.

Yelp
The employees were very happy and eager to help me understand how to order. They made suggestions and they were very patient with me. The restaurant was VERY clean and organized. I went close to closing time and they didn't seem bothered at all. It has a family owned vibe (not sure if it is or not.) My food was very good! I had the grilled shrimp with veggies. It was blackened and garlic butter. I wish I had more corn and I wished the potatoes were bigger but overall it was AWESOME! I can't wait to go back to Raleigh just to eat here!

Just Being T.

Yelp
Food was pretty good but I only got 2 things and it was 50.00. I think they are pretty pricey. I did get the catfish and shrimp. All of my shrimp were not the same size so the smaller ones were kind of overcooked. Now the catfish was supposed to be 2 pieces however it's actually one piece cut in half which I think is misleading. I also got the seafood rice instead of fries and it was good but they need to tell you that there is an upcharge when you make a substitution. They guy was just like you can change it out if you don't want fries or coleslaw. I also got the turkey wing dinner which was good but expensive. Now I will say it was a good portion size but I wouldn't get it every week. My take is I would have given more stars if I wasn't mislead with the upcharge for the rice and also if they gave me 2 actual pieces of fish instead of cutting corners. The lady was nice however they guy who took my order, I wasn't feeling his vibe. I would prob go back again in the future.

Yelp
My mother is super picky and loved the food from here. She had fried oysters, fried shrimp, hush puppies, coleslaw etc and said the food was well seasoned and cooked to perfection. I had whole snapper, collards and shrimp rice and my food was amazing as well. It was definitely worth the wait
google avatar

Beth W.

Yelp
Everything, I mean everything is delicious here!!! Large fresh fried shrimp and 3 large whiting filets were perfectly cooked. The slaw is perfectly creamy and crunchy with the perfect flavor. I ate my hush puppies before I took the picture because I couldn't wait! Run to this place. On a side note, they do turkey legs only on Sundays!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Second time visiting, both visits food was great! Owners and staff were friendly and patient when asked questions regarding the menu. Location is small wouldn't recommend big parties.
google avatar

Mel H.

Yelp
Just what we were looking for as fellow New Yorkers. Our food was freshly made to made to order well seasoned and delicious. The homemade honey butter cornbread was amazing. We need that by the pan next time. The owners were warm welcoming and really nice. They also gave us some additional sauces to try with our seafood. This cute hidden gem reminds us of New York & is very family oriented and has great parking. We definitely recommend this place for good seafood.
google avatar

Kim W.

Yelp
Best seafood in the area, you must try this little gem. We had the grilled salmon, fried jumbo shrimp and sautéed shrimp. It was delicious! You just try the catfish and corn bread too :)
google avatar

D W.

Yelp
This place is sooo delicious! We ordered two surf and turf combos -- one with the sweet bang sauce and the other with the sweet chili sauce. Perfectly cooked, jumbo wings and shrimp with sauces that are simply amazing! Like legit, finger licking amazing! Everything, from the chicken, shrimp, macaroni and cheese, strawberry lemonade, even the fries, are carefully and thoughtfully crafted with great flavors. PS: The name is misleading because they don't stop at just seafood. The menu has great variety and options for everyone! While it was our first visit, it won't be our last! Kudos to the owners for launching a first-of-its-kind restaurant in the area and for having incredibly friendly and helpful staff!
google avatar

Daylily F.

Yelp
Fried, Grilled or Steamed, you'll appreciate the fresh flavor & taste; as well as, friendly service. I had the Grilled Shrimp & Scallops with Steamed Mixed Vegetables (Corn on the Cob, Potatoes & Broccoli), which were absolutely delicious. Watching the video presentation of other freshly prepared entrees being prepared was an enticing & an invitation to return & try them. This casual dine in or takeout place offers you fresh delicious seafood cooked the way you want it. Scott & Michelle were attentive, friendly & gracious hosts. If you appreciate fresh delicious seafood with mutiple preparation options, there's a lot to appreciated & enjoy here. Thank You Scott & Michelle. Mustang USMC Retired

Yelp
Stopped by last Saturday for lunch with my mom and fell in love! The service, the food, the atmosphere was on point! The owners were super welcoming, friendly and helpful when it came to questions on the menu. We were able to place our order, grab our drinks and maybe sit and wait for 5-8mins before our Crab Cake Poppers came out! DELICIOUS yall, it's a fusion between crab cakes and hush puppies!!! My mom ordered the 3pc whiting and 5pc Shrimp Combo with slaw and she rated it a 11/10 !! I was able to taste a shrimp and that batter was on point, not salty at all but well seasoned just how I like it (I cant stand salty food whew). I ordered the snow crab legs cluster which came out beautiful with 3 clusters of crab legs (pretty pink color, full legs and fresh--those are key factors for good crab legs)! My platter came with corn, broccoli and their cajun butter sauce which was delish! The owner treated us to their homemade cornbread which was AMAZINGGGGG!! LONG STORY SHORT, yall go try this place! you will NOT be disappointed!!!!
google avatar

Ashley T.

Yelp
Ok at best. I ordered the grilled salmon's with mixed veggies, and my husband had fried shrimp with yams. My salmon was over cooked and hard, the veggies were okay. The fried shrimp were good, but my husband did not like the yams. He could definitely tell that the yams came from a can. Would I give this place another shot? Possibly, but I have no plans to make a drive to specifically for this location.
google avatar

Al W.

Yelp
Wow! This place is special. When you walk through the door you immediately feel welcomed. The positive attitude of the staff is contagious. Now the food ... we had the jumbo shrimp lunch special. Nicely seasoned and hot. I can't wait to try more stuff on the menu.
google avatar

Cliff C.

Yelp
This place was really good. We will be back. I got lots of food for us to try. Shrimp po boy is very large and very good. Try the shrimp fried rice. . So much to try. They do have places to sit flown and eat. Very clean restaurant and a great place to bring your family. Try this.
google avatar

Ke J.

Yelp
I love the customer service and quick responses when asking about the menu. The food came out very hot and delicious!!! 3 pc whitening & 5 Shrimp Combo a crunch with every bite unforgettable. I would most definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone who is looking for hot and delicious seafood...

Yelp
Some places just make you go mmm, mmm, MMMMM while you eat and this is one of them. We absolutely enjoyed our fried shrimp, fries, mac n cheese, and shrimp rice. Where other places can lack seasoning, TrySeafood brings the flavor, and we are all about it! We are happy to see this business in Cary and plan to be frequent diners. (To the owners, we met Carter while we waited, and he was an excellent host and adorable).
google avatar

Jordan T.

Yelp
Great food and service! Owners are cool and responsive to customers. Highly recommend the strawberry lemonade, banana pudding, and surf and turf meal.

Cheree B.

Yelp
Unfortunately my experience wasn't good at all. I had seen in previous comments someone mention the price being too high- but the food was good. I don't mind paying for food that is actually good, but that wasn't the case with my visit. We ordered shrimp, fish, and chicken (sides were Mac and cheese, fries, corn bread, & lemonade). The shrimp was the only edible part of the meal. I ordered catfish and got some other kind of fish that was bland/tasteless-. The chicken was over cooked-tasted like burnt oil. I was truly disappointed in the chicken because the price was so high (and not even edible) that we could have just ate Bojangles. We did not get the cornbread that was ordered, and the lemonade tasted like plastic kool-aid(they actually use a plastic container). The mac and cheese tasted like rice a roni packet season with cheese thrown in. The price and taste of the food didn't match at all. Spent $50- just to only be able to eat about 6 shrimp? The fries looked season-but tasted like nothing.
google avatar

Maisha R.

Yelp
Food is delicious and the service is impeccable! I highly recommend trying fried catfish, blackened salmon, and all of the sides are tasty. My favorites are the yams and plantains. We visit once a week.

Mark S.

Yelp
What a great place to discover. During a recent trip to Cary, NC we were looking for a decent place for seafood and happened to read positive reviews on Yelp for TrySeafood. The place is tucked into a strip mall on the corner of Walnut Street and Tryon Road. We decided to eat in, but most of the traffic seems to be take out. I had the 8 piece Jumbo Shrimp and my wife had fried shrimp and scallops. Both were excellent and more than sufficient for our appetites. We talked to the owner as we ate and discovered most of his recipes come from his wife's family in South Carolina. Will definitely put this on our list of places to return to when we make a return trip back.
google avatar

Bernadette J.

Yelp
Being originally from the coast of South Carolina, I'm a seafood lover. I'm also particular about fresh, tasty seafood, so I was pleasantly surprised when I dined at Cape Fear Seafood Company. I started with a cup of the crab and shrimp bisque which was flavorful but a little salty. My entree was a half serving of the Shrimp Scampi. It was on point. My friend said she enjoyed the Crab and Lobster Risotto. The servings are generous. Our server was pleasant and was able to give us recommendations. I'll definitely return. Note: The restaurant is in a very popular shopping center and we went for lunch before a holiday. Pack your patience finding a spot.

Yelp
Great customer service and the food is absolutely delicious. I would highly recommend this restaurant
google avatar

Kathy S.

Yelp
Excellent food, going for first time I was amazed.... I tried fried jumbo shrimp w/ Catfish $21 and grilled scallops and shrimp w/steam vegetables $19 really delicious!! And the host is super nice .... Highly recommended it
google avatar

George D.

Yelp
I tried seafood, but was unimpressed. The fried shrimp tasted just like McNuggets... slightly different texture but with the coating overpowering any hint of shrimp. The shrimp and scallops combo was brutally garlicky, and the scallops seemed they had been cut in half height-wise. Clean enough, but small with the ambiance of a dive deli. The full menu is displayed on two screens that change pages pretty fast and leave no chance to ponder between two options, and they had no paper versions.
google avatar

Virginia B.

Yelp
My first time here, I found this to be a small place with big flavors! Only 4 tables inside, but some outside tables are available. You go in and order from the menu that is posted on screens. There is a lot to choose from, but I got the cheese grits with grilled shrimp. The order came out hot and I was very pleased with both the grits and the shrimp. No baby shrimp here, these were big ones and done very well, not over cooked like some places. There was cheese in every bite, not just on top, so I ate the whole thing! Not normal for me, I usually leave some grits, but these were just too good. There is a steady flow of traffic here, but most people do take out, so dont be discouraged if you see a line. Only negative thing was they do not have brewed tea, and were out of the bottled stuff too. The service was wonderful, place is decorated nicely, and food was well done. I will go back and try more of their menu!

Judy E.

Yelp
Fried catfish best I have eaten in North Carolina. Service very good. Cafe environment.

Asad R.

Yelp
This place is a gem! I'm not sure how long it's been open but I recently tried it out and I thought the food was amazing! I tried a variety of dishes including both fried and grilled (blackened) fish and the grilled shrimp. At first I thought the prices might be a little high but once I saw the portions, I understood that this is a bargain! If you get any of the fish plates, you can probably expect two people to comfortably eat off one dish. The fried catfish platter that comes with 4 filets and fries was absolutely huge with each filet large and all four barely fitting inside the box. The blackened seasoning was very good as was the batter on the fried seafood. Overall a great place to visit and very easy to order online as well. Definitely check this place out!

Yelp
This restaurant is amazing. If you're in Raleigh, this eatery is a must. Th owner and staff are awesome as well. The food comes out quickly and hot.If you're in
