Yelp
A mixed bag of emotion - the kids love udon, and the wife loves uni, so we were excited to find a place that offered both. We checked out TsuruTonTan Udon for lunch while still adjusting to the time change. Place was modern, quiet with fast service. The menu was huge and a bit overwhelming, with so many choices and combinations!
What We Ordered:
Uni Udon (Thin Udon) - Generous portion, creamy, and sweet uni. The bowl was wiped clean--definitely a winner!
Uni Creme Udon + Beef Sukiyaki Donburi - The creme broth was rich and bisque-like, but the raw onion (not listed on the menu) was overpowering. Thick udon was okay, but thin udon may have been a better match. The biggest issue? The uni was bitter and should not have been served--the color alone was a red flag. The beef sukiyaki donburi was disappointing--bland, and the sukiyaki sauce had so much starch that it turned gelatinous, completely ruining the dish. The poached egg was done right, though!
Tamago Nigiri - Sweet, fresh, and a hit with the kids.
Imitation Crab Nigiri - Big portion, another kid-approved choice.
Yukari Fries - Crispy with a nice "meaty" texture.
Chicken Karaage - Juicy, crispy, and well-executed.
Drinks (Not Worth It)
Yuzu Hai Chu & Yuzu Margarita - Both were weak and watered down--not worth the price.
Final Thoughts:
Some dishes were solid (Uni Udon, Karaage, Nigiri), but others--especially the bitter uni and disappointing sukiyaki donburi--left a bad impression. Drinks were underwhelming. Might give it another try, but definitely choosing more carefully next time.
