Tsurutontan Review - Union Square - New York - The Infatuation

"In our review of the awesome soba restaurant Cocoron, we said if that ramen were Beyonce, soba would be Solange. Ramen is mainstream and widely-beloved, soba is the arguably cooler, more indie sister. So while we’re in the business of comparing Japanese noodles to Knowles sisters, we’re going to bring udon into the picture. Udon is Kelly Rowland. Why? Well, first of all, there aren’t any other Knowles sisters, and we weren’t about to invent one. But it’s also a good fit. You’re definitely familiar with udon, even if you haven’t heard much about udon recently. Tsurutontan, an udon-focused restaurant near Union Square, is like if Kelly Rowland just released a new album. Is it a chart-topper that’s going to change your life? Is it Lemonade? Are your friends going to text you in all caps about it? Nah. But it’s still perfectly good, and worth a listen in its own way. The bowls of udon here are absolutely massive, and eating them makes you feel like an extremely fancy caveperson. You can get your noodles pretty much any way you like - topped with uni, in a hot duck soup, in a creamy sauce with shrimp. There are other dishes on the menu too, but udon’s what you’ll want to focus on here. The space looks like a high-end spa, but they actually serve cocktails and the space gets livelier than it looks like it would. If you’re really really into Japanese food, or if you work or live near Union Square, or if your best experience with udon has been relegated to midtown bodegas, this place is worth a try. Now Kelly, we’re waiting for that album. Food Rundown Wagyu Shabu Udon A big hot bowl of soup with beef on top. It’s an extra $3 to upgrade to the fancier wagyu beef - may as well. Hot soup is our favorite way to eat udon here - if you’re not into beef, try the duck or shrimp tempura versions. Uni Udon Udon in a rich sea urchin sauce, topped with more sea urchin. This is a lot to take down on one’s own, so you better really like uni. Uni & Caviar Deciding to skip the uni udon, but still want some sea urchin your life? This is a little cup of uni with some caviar. It’s not cheap at $18, but a nice light way to start off. Kitsune & Sukiyaki Sushi If you feel like you need something substantial to round out your udon (it’s a lot of udon, you probably don’t), we enjoyed this roll, which was filled with sukiyaki beef and wrapped with tofu. Unusual, but good." - Hillary Reinsberg

The 20 Essential Restaurants in Waikīkī

"For upscale udon, head to TsuruTonTan, a restaurant chain from Japan with a location in the Royal Hawaiian Center. Giant bowls hold fresh, chewy udon in hot, thick sesame tan tan soup or cold soup topped with ikura or uni. You’ll also find sashimi, sushi, and rice bowls topped with fresh fish." - Martha Cheng

Food was outstanding! The atmosphere was lively and we had a great time. The soup portion was very generous so don’t be too worried about the price. We loved uni so we ordered everything with uni in it. I definitely recommend their waygu tan tan noodles! Only complaint was we had a Visa gift card but we can only use 70% of it and had to leave the rest for tip. The manager insisted there we leave it for tip, but the 18% gratuity was already on the card. Felt like he was trying to cheat us. If it wasn’t for the great food and service it would be a 3 stars.

Slurping, kneading, cutting is how their name translates into English. This Japanese chain of homemade noodles also has locations in NYC, San Francisco and Boston. I've been to Oahu three times recently and each time I didn't get to eat here until now. ATMOSPHERE: They're located on the third level of the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center. Décor is modern and trendy with lots of seats. DINNER MENU: Donburi, sushi, udon, sukiyaki, curry, desserts. BEVERAGE: Lychee Martini - $7.00 happy hour We caught their happy hour near closing time which was cool. The amount of vodka could've been a bit more as I didn't even get a mild buzz from the two I had. Good flavor, not enough booze. FOOD: Sizzling Sukiyaki Udon - $17.00 When I first heard and saw pics of this dish, I knew I had to have it. Spectacular is all I can say as it lived up to its hype. Buttery-soft meat, gooey egg yolk, mushrooms, green onions and chewy udon noodles sizzling in a sweet-savory sauce equaled happy taste buds for me. I unfortunately shared a little of the udon with a friend and that forkful took quite a great deal of noodles out from the bowl. Sharing is caring, right? Nope. Don't share this dish with anyone! Noted. Highly recommended. Salmon & Snow Crab - $15.00, 8 pcs. This was a nigiri-style of sushi with seared salmon crowning each piece. Not bad. The inside was stuffed with a snow crab & mayo mixture and cucumber just like a California roll. I'm not a big sushi fan but I liked it. Katsu Don - $16.00 The amount of pork katsu was very minuscule compared to the mound of rice it sat on. Overall flavor was very subtle and was in need of more sauce - that magical sweet-salty liquid that makes a good donburi dish. Pass. SERVICE: Our gal server was friendly and professional, checking on us twice. Food service was lightning quick! TIP: Open for lunch, they close and re-open for dinner. OVERALL: A definite return as other dishes on the menu look amazingly good. Prices are a steal, especially being in Waikiki.

Google
This place was fantastic - had the happy hour prices for lunch and had udon soup (the first traditional one on the menu, with tempura) and the broth was nice and light. The size is very large! So keep that in mind if you're dining for 1 - you can definitely just order the regular size. Prices were also reasonable for the area (~$20-28 for soup). I liked that you could choose thickness of udon noodle for the soup.

Google
I absolutely loved everything here! Great service! Aesthetic design! Delicious food, good prices! I ordered WAGYU UDON and I was very impressed by the size of my plate, the portion was very large and I took half of the soup home) The sushi is also fresh and very tasty. I will come back here more than once!

Google
To begin, I must express my intention to return and sample additional dishes due to the overall positive experience. My partner and I visited during their special promotion from 2 pm to 5 pm, which offered a 50% discount on select items. We commenced our meal with the Lava Roll, Salmon Truffle Ponzu, and Shishito Peppers. The latter proved to be quite spicy, but the first two were exceptionally delectable and enjoyable. We then proceeded to order the Metaiko Creme with a special request for tofu, which turned out to be absolutely delightful. Additionally, we tried the Sukiyaki Udon, which was a commendable choice, although the broth exhibited a slightly sweet flavor. Both dishes were of regular size, yet substantial enough to be shared. In terms of evaluation, I would wholeheartedly award the food and service a 5-star rating. However, the atmosphere did not particularly captivate me, despite its pleasant setup. Therefore, I shall assign a rating of 4 out of 5 for the ambiance.

Google
Came here based on a recommendation. I didn’t love my food. We ordered beef udon and curry deluxe. Yes, the bowls were large but it seemed more like presentation than anything. Like the bowl was more for show than actually anything special. It’s a quality issue. The meat was not great. Fatty, and some pieces odd tasting. Thin broth leaving much to be desired. I left unsatisfied and wished we chose another place. Just my 2 cents.

Google
My udon today was exceptional. My son didn't have school today and wanted to try the curry since he wasn't able to come earlier this week. He ordered the Wagyu Curry Udon and it was polished clean. He said the Wagyu was tender and went well with the curry. I had the cold Onten Toriten Udon today which I especially liked. The thin udon noodles went well with the cold broth. The noodles were super chewy...just the way I like it. The broth was simple and went well with the fried chicken. Service was excellent. Will definitely come back for more...

Google
Had the mentaiko and uni udon as main entrees, which were very good. Perfectly cooked chewy texture. The mentaiko was well seasoned and full of flavor. The uni was good, but you get very little uni so a little disappointing on the portions. As fast as the other side apps, I don't recommend them at all. Clams were in a overbearing butter water broth the "seared" salmon was basically steamed and didn't have that char flavor. I'd just stick to the udon.

Yelp
I love Tsurutontan (TTT)! Growing up, I didn't care for udon; however, now, I love udon! What I love about TTT is the portions, the texture of the udon as well as the flavor of the soup. Their lunch special is a secret gem in Waikiki. Check out some of the photos that I took of their lunch special! The lunch special I had included a stone pot rice/Wagyu which comes out sizzling. It's so tasty and has a sweet/savory sauce. You're then able to choose a type of udon (fat or skinny noodle) with a soup base. I usually get the curry and it's so flavorful. The special also comes with a cold cucumber side dish which is very refreshing. I wish I were in Waikiki more to enjoy the special! Location wise, TTT is located on the second floor. Service for TTT is always great and the staff are friendly. TTT is a great place to chill and for large groups. It's also very nice and I love the ambiance of the restaurant.

Yelp
I would choose TsuruTonTan over Marugame any day! The udon quality is much better here and the menu is more extensive. I also like how every time I've been here I've never really had to wait. Pro tip: check the restaurant's IG account to find out how to get access to the secret menu! I got the sukiyaki udon, lava roll, and spicy tuna roll. What's nice about their udon is you can get a free upgrade of noodle portion. This is great if you're hungry but it makes the bowl look like nothing is there aside from the noodles lol. Oh, and the bowls are huge and raised which is nice so the food is closer to your face when you are eating. The sukiyaki definitely had the sukiyaki flavor I was looking for. The lava roll is their most popular roll and the spicy tuna roll was as expected; neither really stood out to me but you should go here for the udon anyway. The service is attentive and the place is clean. Again, I highly recommend this place over Marugame!

Yelp
I didn't order the udon here. I didn't know that this place was a chain. (The other two U.S. locations are in New York, interestingly enough.) And we also got a little lost in the open-air shopping center on our way here, though the unplanned detours gave us a moment to admire the architecture. Because the goal in Hawaii was to eat as much fish as possible. Whether that took the form of poke, sushi, mahi mahi, snapper, or whatever, I wasn't picky. And a quick Yelp search while we were in the lobby of our Waikiki hotel revealed that TsuruTonTan was just a short walk away. We were seated quickly and almost as quickly, we decided on the salmon and snow crab roll, ahi nigiri, and salmon truffle ponzu. The salmon truffle ponzu was definitely the highlight -- the truffle was heavenly and combined with the scallion sprinkled on top, brought out the flavor of the salmon sashimi instead of overwhelming it. And listen, I love udon just as much as the next person, but I'd sooner go to the Marugame Udon in Waikiki that's just a ten minute walk away if I were craving that. Come here if you're looking for sushi in a more elevated restaurant with lots and lots of dark wood.

Yelp
Huge udon bowls the size of your face. It's so much food. I'm a sucker for good value, and while the udon sets technically come with a bunch of unnecessary add-ons, you can't deny that the big draw of this restaurant are these massive udon bowls that are guaranteed to fill you up. I actually wanted to highlight the sizzling wagyu rice bowl (a part of the immense Hawaii-exclusive spicy sesame miso udon combo) and the yuzu beef tongue appetizer I got. I'm not the biggest fan of udon, as the noodle texture is just fine to me, and the gargantuan bowls let the udon get soggy if you aren't rushing to slurp everything up. In addition, it also felt like the toppings that customize each udon sets were just a small differentiating touch, while the base of each dish was similar to a fault (but that's just udon). It was actually the wagyu rice bowl and beef tongue that really carried me through the amount of noodles that you get. Humongous. Expansive. ...Wide. Big? Sizable? I'm out of synonyms, but you get the point.

Yelp
We haven't really come here since the pandemic. We were mad at them cause they got rid of this really good take out deal from pandemic time. In any case the food is still really good. My niece was working here is why we came to eat here.

Yelp
The fanciest udon in the biggest bowls ever! I've only been here twice. Most recently, we came with friends and were able to get seated right away. Service was pretty slow but, when you're catching up with friends, it's not so bad. We ordered: 1. Chicken Katsu Curry Deluxe Udon which was curry base with both chicken katsu, 2 shrimp tempura, and thinly sliced beef in it. The base was thick but not as thick as actual curry. The curry was filled with onions. My hubby enjoyed it. 2. I ordered the Sukiyaki Udon which had a soft boiled egg & thinly sliced beef. The broth was pretty sweet & seemed to be shoyu based. 3. Kids Meal: this was such a generous portion of food! I was so impressed. At $12, it was worth it. Our daughter got a mini ramen, a plate with salad, Karaage chicken, fries, edamame, and a fruit jelly. She ate pretty much all of it! Overall, the service was okay. The food was pretty good but kinda pricy.

Yelp
What drew me to this place was the Special Dinner set for $38. Comes with House Salad, Edamame, choice of 1 appetizer, choice of 1 Udon, choice of 1 sushi roll and includes dessert. For my selections, I choose agedashi tofu as my appetizer, lava roll sushi roll and Sukiyaki Udon. The tofu portions were great, large and filling. Lava roll was great and I felt 4 pieces was enough. As for my Udon the Sukiyaki was super salty but enjoyable with its rich umami broth. I would probably try another udon if I went back a second time. But overall I was satisfied with my meal. Service was great as our server checked up on us and refilled our waters. Located on the 3rd floor of the Royal Hawaiian Mall definitely great value for what you get.

Yelp
Tsurutontan is one of those places I could eat at every week and never get tired of. The udon here is next level -- thick, chewy, and perfectly cooked every time. You can tell they really know what they're doing with the noodles. I got the creamy uni udon this time and honestly, it was amazing. Rich, silky broth with that hint of sweetness from the uni -- total comfort food but still elegant. My friend had the beef udon and couldn't stop talking about how flavorful the broth was. The bowls are huge (literally, they're bigger than your face), and the portions are generous without feeling over the top. Service was friendly and quick even though it was busy, and the atmosphere is stylish but still comfortable. Prices are a bit higher than your average noodle shop, but the quality totally makes up for it. Perfect spot for a casual dinner, date night, or when you just want to treat yourself to a beautiful bowl of noodles. They offer kamaaina discount for Hawai'i locals and also have happy hour prices. For parking, they validate for an hour.

Yelp
I came here for dinner with a group of 6 on Wednesday night and we were seated immediately. The restaurant was huge and kept extremely clean and had a nice ambiance. As for food, they currently have a deal for a meal set ($38 per person and you get to choose from three different sets). They say it's good for one person and our waitress advised us that it wouldn't be enough for more than 1 person as each bowl was less than a regular serving but the portion was more than enough for two people to share. We got two sets, beef udon, tan tan udon, creamy udon, and mentaiko caviar udon (cold). When you order à la carte you can decide whether you want thick or thin udon noodles and you can choose a normal or larger serving for the same price. Every dish we got was very filling, and the presentation and taste exceeded expectations. We were all left incredibly stuffed after the meal. A standout was definitely the Wagyu rice and the cold mentaiko caviar udon. Both were extremely flavorful and seasoned well and they definitely did not skimp on the toppings. Overall, I will be coming back every time I'm back in Waikiki!

Yelp
This is a popular udon spot in the mall. It is great for those with large groups and those staying in Waikiki that want something close by. Everything was decent but nothing really blew me away. He had a large group of 10 people and it was great that they could fit us all though. I'm sure there are some better udon spots on the island but many will be tiny places not suited for groups as large as ours. They had $3 Sapporo draft which was a great deal! They have huge menu of not just udon and many of the dishes come in hot or cold options.

Yelp
Located in the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center, TsuruTonTan is a big Japanese restaurant. The restaurant sits a few floors up in the shopping center. The restaurant is pretty big, and each time we have gone without needing reservations. The lighting can feel a bit more on the dim side at night but it is nice and feels clean. It is not super fancy but feels a little bit more than casual. There is seating at tables and booths across the restaurant. The service is efficient and they are nice here! We decided to try the chicken katsu curry udon and sizzling wagyu rice. The udon was solid and a pretty big portion. The rice was good as well, a bit on the oily side for me but overall tasty. The portion was good as well, and we ended up taking leftovers home for both. Next time, we'll try to come back for happy hour!

Yelp
Came for dinner for their "secret" menu. Their bowls are huge and so tasty. Love the udon and how bouncy they are. An upgrade to large is no extra cost and with the secret menu the food is so reasonably priced. Service was excellent and so nice. Their fried chicken was so crispy and their fries were really yummy with the sauce. Their sukiyaki udon was so yummy and I can't wait to come back and try more. Also love their chuhai's
google avatar

Yelp
Been here multiple times now and never disappointed! Super big and spacious restaurant and able to accommodate big parties if needed. Went with a party of 15 once and called maybe 2 hours ahead. Service has always been good and food is great! They also have great Kama'aina discounts/specials frequently! This last visit we took advantage of the udon and sizzling pot special! Udon- you can pick between thick or thin and they have tons of variations! I prefer the Kake if I just want a light flavorful broth. They curry is also good if you're looking for something more hearty with a little kick! Sizzling pot is super flavorful and if you let it sit the rice gets crispy on the edges with the stone pot! Lot of parking at royal hawaiian. Restaurant can validate for 1 hour but if you're kama'aina or military you can get 3 hour complementary if you go guest services and meet the minimum purchases.

Yelp
My family is a fan of the udon noodles after coming to this place. Love that there were 2 udon noodle options, thin or traditional. The broth was soooo good. Warms your heart and very flavorful. The bowls were huge! The wagu sushi was, oh my god, chef's kisses. A must try. Great customer service. Our server was very helpful and attentive and I was loving our booth they placed my family at. It fit way more than my family of four. Nice, beautiful, calm atmosphere at the restaurant.

Dayna M.

Yelp
Second time visiting here and the service is always so great! Ordered the shishito peppers and I know these ratio is 1 in 10 are spicy but wow we happened to get so many spicy ones. I think they could have been a bit more seasoned as well. Also ordered the Wagyu beef udon with thick udon noodles. Noodles were chewy, beef was tender and the broth was flavorful. One note is the cabbage was quite bitter. Overall a restaurant I would return to!

Yelp
I'll be the first to say that I'm not the biggest fan of udon. However, this place singlehandedly changed my perspective of udon noodles. I came here twice during my trip to Hawaii: The first time we came here was to meet up with family and this place did not disappoint. We went during the weekend with a big party, a bit worried the place might be packed, but we were able to grab a table quickly even without a reservation. I got the hiyashi uni which was refreshing, but nothing too special. But I tried my sister's uni cream which was so delicious I could not stop thinking about it after that. The second time around we came on a whim because I simply could not stop thinking about the uni cream dish and made it my mission to get my own bowl of uni cream at least once before I returned to the mainland. Uni cream is probably one of the best noodle dishes that I have ever tried. Ever. The broth is divine--milky and creamy and savory and all goodness mixed into one. I love how you can choose between thin or thick noodles. I don't like thick udon, so I gladly chose thin udon! Service here was spectacular. We got the same server both times and he was very attentive and accommodating about any questions we had about the menu. The ambiance is also nice, located in the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center. I am definitely stopping by this place again whenever I'm in the area.
google avatar

Christina L.

Yelp
The udon here is so delicious and served in epic gigantic bowls with huge ladles. So satisfying. Make sure you get the extra thicc noodles and upgrade to the larger size, trust me, you won't regret it! We love the uni cream and cold mentaiko. Happy hour here lasts until 5:30pm and pretty much the whole menu is discounted. They have a keiki set, which they brought out very quickly to soothe our toddler. Our server was so sweet and accommodating. The atmosphere is clean, zen, and modern. Park at the royal hawaiian shopping center structure and get validation.
google avatar

Justin H.

Yelp
Lots of options here. Food is very good , service is kind of slow , but staff are very kind and helpful. Inside this restaurant is very very clean and nicely organized. Parking is inside Royal Hawaiian shopping center.
google avatar

Liezel A.

Yelp
Recommend to make reservation for a big party. We had a party 11 and they have a room just for our family. There's lots of parking on the Royal Hawaiian shopping center and don't forget to validate your parking. The food is delicious. They offer Happy hour from open to 530 pm. We both order udon with mentaiko and it was both delicious. The crème is delicious and little heavy but my hubby got the cold udon with mentaiko and he added another egg. I enjoyed my hubby meal. They also offer extra noodles with no cost and skinny or fat udon noodles. I prefer extra and skinny udon noodles. If you're at Waikiki go check them out for Happy Hour or have a night out with your friends with great food.

Yelp
Was a let down :( We stopped by for a quick lunch after shopping in the area. The pictures and menu was so promising. It's spacious inside, modern and nice! We were sat right away but it took a bit until our orders were taken. Service was just okay. There were only a few tables sat when we were there but it was hard to flag down our server. Might've been because it was during the shift change. We got: - Pina colada 4/5 standard, no complaints - Ikari fries and edamame 4/5 standard, no complaints - Blue crab california roll promo 1/5 the avocado was unripe and hard - Mentaikatama udon 3/5 the flavors and toppings were good, udon was undercooked - Sizzling sukiyaki udon 4/5 solid choice 2.5 stars, was disappointed with my experience. Food was just okay overall. Pretty pricey too. I've heard such great things so maybe just a miss this time. I just happened to have both of the items that were misses (roll and mentaikatama udon) XD

Yelp
This is a pretty standard udon spot. I was eager to try it because I know it's a chain with locations in Japan and the US, which usually means a high-quality experience. The udon is good, but it didn't stand out as being particularly different from Marugame's in terms of quality. What makes this place unique are a few key things: 1) Happy Hour: They offer discounts if you come early. 2) Variety: There's an impressive number of different soup bases to choose from. I was most excited to try the sukiyaki, but it was just okay--a bit too sweet for my taste. 3) Bentos: The bento combinations are great, and the kids gave two thumbs up to the avocado roll. It was also quite overwhelming. Overall, it's a family-friendly spot in Waikiki that doesn't require reservations. For a simpler and more affordable udon experience, I would still recommend Marugame.

Yelp
My friend and I love to visit this place whenever we have the opportunity to walk over from work and have lunch during the weekdays. If you don't follow them on instagram, it is worth doing so because they have great weekday Instagram lunch special udon/mini donburi combination at a great price! That's what we go for. The restaurant is spacious and you can walk-in with casual wear. The service is okay, some visits better than others but we love the deal and the food is good. I enjoy the curry udon and my friend loves the cream broth. It's a good sized bowl of noodles and you can upgrade your order too. Each week, the mini donburi is what changes on the special. Because time is limited on our lunch break, we always slurp up the udon and take the mini donburi to-go. It's a great deal for a lunch a dinner! Special is typically under $15 good 11:30 am - 2 pm M-F. Let them know you are kamaaina and you get the locals discount too! Be sure to get your parking validated too.

Yelp
The food was Oishi, Onolicious, Fabulous!!! I had the Special with chicken! I've never had thin udon but I really enjoyed the noodles!!! They were aldente so they were chewy. They were plentiful and I ended up taking leftovers home of the tempura and rice. We'll be Back again! Service was great attentive and friendly!!!

Yelp
We went to TsuruTonTan for their 50% off special menu after 8 PM, and it was such a great deal! I ordered the mentaiko kamatama, which is one of my absolute favorites, and it didn't disappoint -- rich, creamy, and perfectly balanced. My partner got the sizzling sukiyaki, which was flavorful and comforting. We also shared the spicy ahi roll and shio kombu cabbage. Everything was delicious except the cabbage -- it had a bit too much sesame oil, and the oil tasted slightly oxidized, almost like it had been sitting out or exposed to sunlight. Overall, though, the food and value were excellent, and the 50% off menu made it even better. Definitely worth going back for their udon and late-night specials!

Cara B.

Yelp
My husband and I had our wedding near this location, and with all the planning and setup in the days leading up, we were glad to find a place open a bit later than we usually eat. We arrived around 8 PM, and although it was pretty full, we were seated right away. The space is comfortable and can fit a good number of people. We both ordered the large options-- I got the sukiyaki udon and my husband got the Tsurutontan Deluxe. We both loved our meals and finished our bowls. Our waiter was quick, efficient, and got our food and check to us without delay. Great spot for a late dinner.

Yelp
This is the place to go for great food, good service, nice ambiance and reasonable prices especially for lunch!!! I have heard a lot about the lunch for kama'aina's and was so excited to try it. It didn't disappoint me at all!! We had the $3 Sapporo beer to start. You then choose which udon you want from 4 choices: kake, hiyashi, chicken curry or cream. I had the chicken curry udon with the garlic shrimp donburi. The udon noodles were the right texture but just a little bit long for me. The curry was spot on. The garlic shrimp donburi was so delicious!! The rice had the nice crunchy bottom bits and garlic flavor was amazing. My friend had the wagu donburi which she enjoyed immensely. My husband had the kake udon with spicy tuna sushi and tempura. It's definitely a must try

Yelp
Long overdue review! I couldn't believe the Uni Cream Udon was served in one large bowl, enough to wash my face in it like the Neutrogena commercial. I was expecting to be served in a spaghetti form, but it was covered in creamy Mentaiko cream soup with a small uni that was drowning in the middle, looking like a tongue sticking out. The uni was fresh, and the udon was thick. Somehow, I managed to finish the whole bowl myself despite it being a heavy meal. I wish they hadn't added too much cream sauce and added another uni. Overall, it was a friendly service and they accept reservations by phone inside this nice, spacious restaurant. Ask them for validated parking if you park inside the Royal Hawaiian Center.

Yelp
Hidden on some top floor of some mall. Haha I'm directionally challenged and just follow the husband. It wasn't busy. We came during HH which is about a few bucks off the regular price. I got to try their special deluxe udon bowl and it was a pretty large bowl! A mixture of everything and pretty tasty. We got a couple of appetizers too which were nice. My parents who are usually picky also enjoyed their udon dishes. Kids also enjoyed as well. Price felt a bit higher and unnecessary along with the fanciful decor. lol. Upscale udon. But I mean presentation was pretty nice. They did have kids sets which makes them kid friendly but if you got a misbehaving kid like our second one. You'll feel a little awkward. lol But I'd come again! Great for groups.

Yelp
Perfect to go here for Happy Hour! At TsuruTonTan the bowls are huge and when I say huge they are enormous! There was no wait, and the restaurant is nice and spacious. We ordered a bowl of duck udon for $20. I think it was the perfect size to share between two people. I do wish that there were more noodles. The broth was rich, and the duck was tender and fatty. We also got a cocktail to drink, and that one is their Yuzu Mojito, I think? That was pretty good too. TsuruTonTan has good deals for happy hour, otherwise we wouldn't have gone at another time. In comparison to other udon places, this might be a bit fancier, but it is a good place to get solid udon.

Yelp
Royal Hawaiian Center validates so it's nice not to worry about parking when dining here. We stumbled upon this udon place with no expectations not even looking at reviews. First impression is that it's dark interior and you get the feeling that this place is more for late night crowds. But..we headed inside and were quickly seated by staff. Hostess was nice and acted as a server as well. The menu is huge with a variety of rice and udon dishes. So much to choose from and so many different specials. Lunch specials, dinner sets, dessert add ons, drinks , and the list goes on. We opted for the kids set for $12.99...so worth it! Gyu beef don, fries and gyoza. Everything came out quickly and so nice they brought bowls for us to share. The udon was so huge! More than enough to share. Broth flavorful, yummy chewy noodles. So good! The fries so yummy and crispy. Back to kids meal again.,such a deal..karage, fries, mini udon, jelly pack, salad...so huge and did I mention only $12.99? The only disappointment was the gyoza. Think it was made somewhere else and boiled in house..not much filling and doughy. Will come back again!

Yelp
I was craving for soup so came to Royal Hawaii center. Service was quick. Foods were delicious as I remembered. The udon have great chewy texture in my sukiyaki broth. I ordered grilled duck breast, clams and Agadashi tofu plus spicy tuna rolls. All were delicious and udon was upsized. I left really full belly lol The decor is simple and spacious.

Yelp
If you are looking for the best lunch special in Waikiki this is definitely the place. 3rd floor of the Royal Hawaiian Center. Great atmosphere and amazing friendly service. Order: Lunch special. Your choice of udon (full portion) and options either tuna poke, tempura/sushi roll or rotating special. Three different options ranging from $14-21 depending on how hungry you are. Curry broth with homemade udon noddles. Spicy tuna roll and shrimp/vegetable tempura. The homemade noodles are the star of the show. Perfect texture and chew that elevated the entire dish. Curry broth was rich and flavorful. This bowl of udon is highly cravable. We learned the bowls are custom made in Japan and cost $300 each. They were as big a a flower planter you would have on your front porch. The soup spoon was the size made for a giant. Overall: Best lunch in Waikiki hands down for $20. A delicious deal you don't want to miss.

Yelp
Restaurant is stylish, staff is quick and helpful, parking is validated within the Royal Hawaiian Center in Waikiki. They offer kamaaina special rates for their lunch specials. Food is always consistently fresh and tasty. I always recommend the Cold Mentaiko Caviar udon, because it is cold, the udon retains all the bounce and chew that you're looking for in fresh udon. Remember to always upgrade your udon to the large size for free! I used to always order their grilled maitake mushrooms that were drizzled with garlicy truffle oil, but they have since taken it off the menu. I hope they might bring it back! Definitely recommend checking them out! They offer a special happy hour menu from 2pm-5:30pm, ask for their special menu. They also offer a late night happy hour.

Yelp
Generous portions, great service! Tried their wagyu special, beef tongue appetizer, ramune Mocktail. Wagyu udon is basically pepper lunch but WAY better. Great flavor and texture. Can't go wrong with ramune mocktail, tastes exactly how it sounds. Beef tongue is well cooked with the splash of lemon juice. Portions here are large enough to share one bowl with another person. Interior is pretty specious and clean.

Yelp
Mentaiko udon 4/5 - not my favorite mentaiko udon. I think the broth could've been less liquidy. We got the large size and I think it's the same as the normal size. Bowl might be bigger but food serving size didn't seem different. The bowl itself was actually huge but not a lot of food. Restaurant atmosphere is nice and very big! Felt clean and decor was nice. Restaurant is located on the third floor of the shopping center

Yelp
We really enjoy coming here when we're in Waikiki. Food is always great, they have a big menu with something for everyone and it's a great value. Service is good and the ambiance is usually bustling with diners at lunch and dinner. The cabbage salad with salted kombu is an absolute must. So is the sizzling udon options. Can't go wrong...just depends on what you're ono for.

Yelp
When we're in Waikiki we always love to come here. Great selection of ramen and always super yummy. Service is always very friendly and quick. Located in the Royal Hawaiian shopping center they have lots of parking and the restaurant is quite large with lots of seating. Nice modern restaurant.

Yelp
One of the best Happy Hours on Island. Whether you like udon or sushi. Random pupu's or whatever this place has it all. Ask for the local menu that has the 50% off discounts at happy hour. Special for August is $3 Kirin draft and $5 red wine. I highly recommend this place. And if you're Kamaaina you can take your receipt down to the bottom floor customer service near the ponds and they will extend your validation for parking to 3 hours.

Yelp
A mixed bag of emotion - the kids love udon, and the wife loves uni, so we were excited to find a place that offered both. We checked out TsuruTonTan Udon for lunch while still adjusting to the time change. Place was modern, quiet with fast service. The menu was huge and a bit overwhelming, with so many choices and combinations! What We Ordered: Uni Udon (Thin Udon) - Generous portion, creamy, and sweet uni. The bowl was wiped clean--definitely a winner! Uni Creme Udon + Beef Sukiyaki Donburi - The creme broth was rich and bisque-like, but the raw onion (not listed on the menu) was overpowering. Thick udon was okay, but thin udon may have been a better match. The biggest issue? The uni was bitter and should not have been served--the color alone was a red flag. The beef sukiyaki donburi was disappointing--bland, and the sukiyaki sauce had so much starch that it turned gelatinous, completely ruining the dish. The poached egg was done right, though! Tamago Nigiri - Sweet, fresh, and a hit with the kids. Imitation Crab Nigiri - Big portion, another kid-approved choice. Yukari Fries - Crispy with a nice "meaty" texture. Chicken Karaage - Juicy, crispy, and well-executed. Drinks (Not Worth It) Yuzu Hai Chu & Yuzu Margarita - Both were weak and watered down--not worth the price. Final Thoughts: Some dishes were solid (Uni Udon, Karaage, Nigiri), but others--especially the bitter uni and disappointing sukiyaki donburi--left a bad impression. Drinks were underwhelming. Might give it another try, but definitely choosing more carefully next time.

Yelp
Located in the heart of Waikiki! This was one of our first stops when we landed on Oahu. I believe it's on the third floor in the Royal Hawaiian Center. First impression was that the restaurant was quite big and nice inside. I came around 3:00 PM so it was empty which was great because I heard it does get busy. They have different specials and you can see them on their Instagram account. We came during happy hour so most items were about $1-$3 cheaper. Ordered the following (happy hour prices): - Nabeyaki Udon $22.00 - Creme Mentaiko $22.00 - Sizzling Sukiyaki Udon $22.00 - Tsuru DLX $25.00 There's free upgrades for the udon soups and it comes in a very large bowl! The udon had a nice consistency and was chewy. I thought everything was good, but not great. I probably would not order the Creme Mentaiko again because I did get tired of it halfway through. I would prefer the other udons that had a variety of items inside. Overall, it's not bad and glad I gave it a shot.

Yelp
This is one of those "if you know, you know" spots. As a local, if we're going to make our way into Waikiki, it has to be for a good reason. And going to Tsurutontan is one of them. Tucked inside the Royal Hawaiian Center on the 3rd floor, Tsurutontan is a spacious restaurant that offers a great happy hour. We went during a Sunday afternoon right when happy hour started so they weren't busy, but I can see them filling up quickly during dinner time. The service was still friendly, quick, and all the staff were very attentive. I ordered a bunch of items to try, and have no complaints for any of the ones I tried. Honestly, it just made me want to try the rest of their menu. Park in the royal hawaiian shopping center to get the 1 hour validation after meeting the spending limit (3 hour validation for Kamaaina if you visit the shopping center guest services desk). Be sure to check out their instagram for their current specials!

Yelp
This place is big and has a lot of seating and was packed the first time I came on a Saturday evening around 7:30. We loved the food so much we came back for lunch a few days later. They have a January special with all day $3 house wine (and beer)! I got the hiyashi uni udon, one time with the thick noodles and once with the thin ones. Both delicious but the thin noodles were a bit harder to pick up and eat due to being tied in knots. Aesthetically very pretty but harder to eat. You get 3 small pieces of uni and it's delicious and fresh. Generous portion of udon as well Added on a tekka maki and my mom got the salmon maki. Both good but not amazing. I'd definitely come back but wish parking was easier.

Yelp
Big parties need to order ahead of time. We thankfully were able to get a reservation day of because the staff was nice and understanding. We had a party of 6 adults and 5 toddlers. The food was sooooo good! My 2yo didn't even talk. She just ate her udon the whole time and basically finished a LARGE bowl almost all by herself. Get the large version as it is the same price :)

Yelp
Located in the mall, this spot has some great udon. We came just for udon and it was amazing. Went with their tan tan, #1 udon and their creamy gratin udon. All of them had various depths of flavors and soup flavors of light to heavy. My favorite was the TanTan. Their Wagyu meat was also super soft.

Amazing food & flavors here!! Their service is great & they're very attentive. I love how they offer lunch specials during the week, they're a great deal! Great place to grab lunch/dinner if you're in the area.

Yelp
Hands down one of my favorite restaurants ever! I always make an effort to eat here multiple times whenever I visit Oahu. I recommend going during happy hour as it gets quite busy. Food: 5/5 I've tried majority of the items on the menu and everything has been great. Good portions too. Sushi is so fresh & tasty and the udon is one of a kind. Of the udons, I suggest the wagyu beef udon (with the free upgrade to large). Staff: 5/5 All the servers I've had over the years are personable and friendly Ambiance: 4/5 Lots of seating and good music. Can be overwhelming with the loud music and many of the staff walking around super fast but I dont mind

Yelp
We were in Waikiki for 10 days and this was the only place we visited twice! I love Udon and we found this restaurant and OMG! So good. They have an amazing happy hour and monthly deals - you can get a glass of wine for $3! We took advantage of that. And when you order udon - you can get certain sushi for $5 - we got the wagyu udon which I've never tried before - so yummy! We got sushi as well but can't remember the name. Both of the udon we got was to die for - my partner doesn't eat udon a lot but he said it was great! I love udon and get it often - I got the duck and it was tender and so yummy. You even get a free upgrade for extra noodles - I will always say yes! The service was great. They're on top of making sure you're refills are taken care of and you enjoy the cuisine! The restaurant is big and inside a shopping mall almost - it gives you enough space between other parties so you can enjoy the experience. I love udon! And will be back! :)

Yelp
Quiet udon and sushi restaurant located on second floor. Lots of seating space. Happy hour from 11am - 5pm, menu items are discounted. Ordered a sushi roll and their #1 best seller udon. Served asked me regular or large size. Got the large, it was huge! Service was great. Hot tea was only $0.50. It was the biggest udon I've ever had in my life, the bowl is the size of a pot. Definitely a good potion size for sharing. The beef topping was good, the chicken didn't taste very good, probably low quality. The eggs were good. The tempura was so so. The inside of the tempura was not as soft as it should be. Overall, a great place for sit down lunch or dinner.
