I would have never walked into Tu Arepa on my own. This location looks like a pizza bodega but I got such a glowing recommendation from my family that we wanted to try. And it was an amazing novel experience.
So much so, that I predict Arepas will be the next big thing when New Yorkers discover it.
Arepa is this Venezuelan soft corn cake with savory taco-esque stuffing.
The arepas from Tu Arepa Pizza Cafe are made to order. So super fresh.
(Expect a 20 min wait for each one).
We got the pabellon (beef, plantains, black beans and cheese) grilled arepa and the pernil grilled arepa.
The first bite brings you through the crispy grilled layer to the cloud-like consistency of the corn cake. And the pernil was juicy, fatty and so well seasoned. Definitely get the pernil!
The sweet soft plantains were great in the Pabellon. I just wanted the shredded beef, beans and cheese more mixed.
Definitely come here for a new experience.
