As Power Outages Continue Across DFW, Local Restaurants Serve as Impromptu Warming Stations - Eater Dallas

"In Fort Worth, music venue and bar Tulips opened up its 5,000 square foot space to locals who needed a spot to warm up and some hot coffee, and they’re planning to keep the doors open as long as there’s a need. 'We’ve had about 60 people come through today,' says co-owner Jason Suder. 'We have 5,000 square feet of space, we have power, and we have the ability to keep people warm and in a safe place. As long as there are power outages, we will be open for people.' Tulips is also serving hot dogs to folks that stop by." - Amy McCarthy

This could be a great concert spot. My only complaints are that no one waited tables, there was only one bartender, and they were out of stock on some of the basics like cabernet. Since seating was first come, first serve & the only food was on a truck outside, we had to take turns holding the table & standing in the food line & the bar line. For paid ticketed venues, you tend to expect a reserved seat or table service. But the show was great & the bartender was nice.

Google
Such a fabulous music venue! I love live music. This was our first time at this venue. Everyone was very friendly and the bar moved things along quickly. I'd definitely see a show here again!

My group and I needed ADA accommodation and the staff went above & beyond to make us feel included and comfortable. The sound was great, the drinks were reasonably priced, and the restrooms were easily accessible. Needless to say we had a blast. We hope to be back soon.

Google
This venue is nice and restrooms SUPER CLEAN. Love the food trucks in the patio. Able to get food and a show. The only downside was the AC was no working at optimally. In the standing room it was extremely hot. Sound was great and the performance was top level!!!

Went here on Saturday night March 22. Since all the indie venues in Dallas have fallen prey to corporate ventures, this is a refreshing example of a place to go see good music in a smaller space that doesn't put you through the hoops of the aftermarket ticket monopoly. I found the employees from the door to sound to bar to all be super friendly. I didn't buy any drinks, so I didn't have to concern myself with the autograt, though the prices I saw were not in my opinion all that high for a venue. I thought they were reasonable even with the gratuity. There's a spacious patio out back with plenty of seating and a separate bar out there where I bought an Americano. I don't think that one does the autograt, at least they didn't with my coffee. The food was from a little trailer setup selling various forms of grilled cheese sandwiches, though I wasn't hungry at all so can't really comment on that. The green room is appropriately skanky, but it offers laundry and a shower, which is super valuable to artists who've been on the road for weeks on end, and it was well stocked with food and drink -- a welcome relief from days and days of living on gas station burritos. I found parking really easy, but I was there pretty early, so I have no idea what it's like later in the evening. All in all, I hope to see this venue booking more bands that I like because all those places that used to be in Deep Ellum aren't anymore. I'd love a regular venue that isn't the surgical theater sterile atmosphere of that thing in Irving with it's grossly inflated ticketmaster prices, its hostile employees, its thirty dollar drinks, and its line of aggressive taxis trying to physically cut you off from your uber while police yell at you that they're going to arrest you if you step one toe over their little pylons. Thanks for a great night out Tulips!

Google
Great atmosphere, good drinks, and yummy variety of choices. We were there for a show and had a VIP table. We were permitted a pre-show meet and greet, which was awesome. Our vip table had a good view and included some champagne on ice w/ glasses. The bathroom was clean with correct amenities such as toilet paper, hot water, soap, and paper towels. The outside area for getting air, smoking, intermission, mingling, had good lighting, a neighbor bar, and a food truck with yummy and affordable prices.

Google
Love this venue/bar. Very unique look and feel. The wall separating the main bar from the floor space for shows is kind of inconvenient for visual obstruction, but thats definitely no reason to skip a show here. Staff are kind and helpful. I've always had a great time at Tulips.

Google
Great venue! Everyone is welcomed and escorted to assigned seating if you have one. Reasonable prices and a clean establishment. I was so worried visiting for the first time after reading the reviews. Ignore the haters! This place is a gem. I’ll be back.

Yelp
I love to go to shows here! please come check it out for yourself. they're the only place booking bands in our area that are fringe, popular, experimental, newbies, obscure and eclectic. don't listen to the other reviews who are living to see places like this gem get bad reviews because they didn't stir their drink 3 times like they asked them to or something ridiculous like that. go here. listen to music. be happy.

Yelp
Came here for a Lover tribute show, and the performer was amazing as always. The venue wants to overcharge for canned water and not provide tap water. It's a cheap way to prey on patrons. Cocktails were strong and tasty, but you'll for sure pay for em. Bartenders are sweet.

Stacy W.

Yelp
Concert was awesome!! However the bill was not!! I was charged an automatic gratuity and then tipped on that!! The place is very dark and I did not see a sign anywhere stating this!! 3 beers and 1 shot (which was about a spit full) definitely a pricey night

Yelp
Great cozy venue. Some great acts, good acoustics and great service. Highly recommend visiting this Fort Worth gem.

Yelp
Good, small venue with a reasonable price for tickets. Drinks are more expensive than a bar but less expensive than a traditional concert venue. Beers at $9ea and cocktails around $15. Sound is good and there is a food truck out back. Clean bathrooms. Most of the venue is general admission (standing) but they do sell tables. There are two types of tables: bar tables and venue tables. The venue tables have more comfortable bar chairs but are otherwise the same as the bar tables. Tables are first come first serve. We did not realize when purchasing our tickets that you are reserving a SEAT at the table, not the table itself. There are 4 to a table, so if your party is less than 4, you will be sharing the table with other guests. If you arrive too late, there may not be space for your group to sit together, even if you bought a "bar table". Also note, two of the bar tables have no view of the stage and one has an obstructed view (big pillar). With this in mind, the venue tables seem like a safer choice, assuming you care about sitting down. I think there are probably some changes the venue could make to improve the seating situation. Now let's talk about their absurd water policy. They do not offer tap water; only Liquid Death for $4 a can. There is a sign that explicitly states this. The policy extends to all paying customers - it's not just a "restroom for customers only" type policy... you can be buying $60 worth of drinks, hand them a cup, and they literally will not pour you a tap water. We ended up just using the cups from our first round of beers and filling up with water in the bathroom, but this is kind of a gross thing to expect customers to do. If bartenders don't want to waste time filling waters all night, they need to install a spout to the side of the bar so people can fill up themselves. Charging $4 for every water discourages hydration, which actually seems like kind of a safety issue for an establishment that sells lots of liquor and no food. Overall it's a great place with 5 star potential, but we hope they can work out the kinks of the seating and water situation.

Yelp
Terrible venue for concerts. Concert opened doors at 7, but not even VIP was let in until 9 or so WHILE IT WAS FREEZING. The openers were done wrong and only had time for maybe 2 songs that were a minute long. There was no reason for them to be cut so short just because of the venue. Also, Jimmy Brown and Raav and the producers had to constantly tell the people in the sound booth to turn up their mic sounds. SideNote: it is a huge problem if you can't hear yourself on the front monitor or speaker during a concert as a performer!! Free parking The bar is okay and the vibe the place has when it comes to looks is nice, service is good, no deals on drinks during concerts and as a matter of fact you can count on this place up-pricing everything during concerts as every venue does. . .

Yelp
Bought tickets to see The Texas Gentleman and found out once we were there that they were no longer playing. We paid $70 for two tickets and spoke with Jason the owner who was unwilling to offer a refund. Such poor principle...
google avatar

Libby H.

Yelp
Great small venue for local and up and coming bands. However, they charge for water...FOR REAL! You can get a cup of ice and fill it up in the bathroom from your local Fort Worth water (which Dallas even enjoys) yea easy, BUT you have to BUY a can of water at the bar $4. The bartenders are not allowed to fill your cup WITH WATER at the bar. I find this wildly weird. However to be honest i don't get out enough maybe times have changes but WOW! WATER!! "Water the juice of life!!" WATER from the bar?

Yelp
What a great place for live entertainment! Drinks were affordable and the staff was amazing!

Yelp
Oooh Tulips. I liked Tulips. I arrived a few minutes early, and the door was unlocked, but I waited until the stoke of 4 to walk in when they were officially open. I'm not trying to be that guy. It is on St. Louis next to the little tea shop and book store. But know this! It is bigger on the inside. I was floored when I walked into a much larger event space than I was expecting. Not to mention, they have a badass patio that is good at blocking you from the wind. The bartender seemed new to the establishment, but not behind the bar. I asked her about specials, she didn't know them off the top of her head, but found out. Then she showed her skill while making our cocktails. It is ok not to know something, if you're ready to figure it out. And she makes a good drink. I started with a Dylan 75. I am a sucker for a French 75, and everyone's twist on one. This one is made with tequila. I like tequila. I also appreciate a pretty cocktail in a coupe glass. I followed it up with a palomita. As I am a fan of a paloma, which is my summer jam. Their cocktails are $7 during happy hour, they have a stage and host some pretty good shows. The decor is cool, they really seem to be welcoming and supportive to the historically disenfranchised, and they make a hell of a drink. Also, I don't know if it is the owner, manager, appointed furniture mover, but the man making things happen seems to be informed and friendly. And knows his history of the coupe.

Yelp
This place is always a great time. I've only been for bands and seeing live music. The sound is really great there. The staff is professional and nice. I did have the worst margarita ever there last night, but that's situational. 2 shots were almost 30$ which Is crazy. It's a off the area dive bar prices should reflect that

Jeremy H.

Yelp
I like some of the shows they have in the venue but I won't be drinking there again. The drinks suck, they are overpriced, and they snuck in a 20% auto gratuity. I wasn't part of a huge group, was just buying for me and one other person. I was about to tip more before I noticed it on the check. It seemed shady and disrespectful.
google avatar

Tonya B.

Yelp
Drink prices are absolutely ridiculous. We somehow spent $177 (just two of us!!) over a four hour show. Unfortunately, my husband didn't get a receipt to see how in the world it added up. The tickets for the show we went to were $15 - there is no way Tulips can charge the same prices for drinks as the big venues where tickets are in the hundreds. Wanted to love this place, but we won't be back.

Mark N.

Yelp
Had a horrible experience here. Paid good money to see a concert. Another attendee became offended by us trying to get a better spot to view the show while also respecting everyone else's space. Security pulled us aside and made many false accusations of what was said and occurred. Our side of the story was completely I acknowledged and we were forced out of the venue despite being cordial and having completely rational explanations for what actually occurred. I was a fan of this venue but will never be back due to the inadequate security not doing their due diligence to prove we deserved to be removed. Last time I checked, we had freedom of speech in this country, so even if what she accused of us was actually said, we should have been allowed to say, or at least be heard out when giving our version of events. I hope no other bands I enjoy play this venue because I will not be attending due to this experience. As if it wasn't bad enough, security was trying to act tough like they were about to get physical with me over some words. I wasn't bothering anybody except an apparently extremely insecure individual that thought we were making fun of her. If I could give it less than one star, I would. Will never be back. Hire some security staff that actually know how to preform their jobs.

Yelp
I found this venue to be pretty nice. Entry process was easy; did not search my bag although it was small. Almost left it in the car because I read other reviews but they gave me no issues at all with it. The lines for drinks got SUPER long, they only had three bar areas open during the show- two terminals at the main and then one on the patio. Overall would come here for a show again.

Zoe M.

Yelp
Pretty dope venue. I always enjoy my time here, you got burgers, drinks and music. Plus the staff is chill.
google avatar

Kelly S.

Yelp
Great venue to listen to live music, make a button and catch some rays on the patio all why never missing a "beat"!
google avatar

Paul G.

Yelp
Best venue to go to in Fort Worth, in my eyes. Has great bartenders that show everyone attention. The set up is pretty nice with the back area being a cool part you can chill with the homies.

Yelp
Came here for the Horton heath concert. Drinks were an overpriced rip off. No where to sit so we had to stand for 2 hours.. Female bouncer at the front marked our hands with toxic sharpie ink then told me to leave my purse in the car out in the dark. Rude rude rude. Freezing cold outside with no heaters and nowhere to sit inside. All the women at the front were rude to us. Did they hire these women from San Quinton. They treated us like prison inmates entering jail. Horrible place, rude service. Guess what tulips: without my purse I can't buy drinks!!!! Hey tulips: there are safe markers used to write on skin they use for marathons. Stop marking kids with toxic sharpies on their skin. What is wrong with you.

Jess H.

Yelp
Fun Bar with great variety of drinks! Nice venue to take in local artists or mini concerts. It's spacious and has a patio about back. You can hear the music throughout without feeling cut off from the main bar area. Just a little gem in Fort Worth!

Kaynee M.

Yelp
We bought a VIP table and all tables were full when we arrived, we were told "sorry I wish there was something we could do about that but we would have to ask every person in here for there ticket". Terrible business. If you sell tickets with a table number.....put a number on the table. Instead the venue puts "reserved" on every table and anyone that walks in can have whatever table they choose.

Yelp
Went to Tulips the other day for a small show with my female. Absolutely charming venue, nice sound system, and intimate setting. The bar itself is especially impressive and features craft cocktails, craft beer, and heigh-tier spirits. Was actually quite impressed with some of the offerings, such as the Nitro Negroni which is a cold brew coffee infused negroni with Ford's gin, Campari, and Dolin's sweet vermouth. Extremely balanced, extremely delicious. Myself being a mixologist native to Los Angeles, this wasn't the type of thing I expected to find at some little bar and venue in Fort Worth Texas. That said, all of the credit is owed to Garrett Anderson, Tulips' Bar Manager. Having run a bar myself (and not to mention having visited many others all over the world), I must express satisfaction in recognizing that, damn, this girl really knows how to build and run a world class bar program. Very nice, very impressive. If you're ever in the area, I highly encourage you to visit Tulips. If not for a show, the music, or charming aesthetics, then simply to have a drink. It'll definitely be worth your time.

Yelp
Check your bill! I was charged $160 for two drinks. Owner admittted it was wrong but would not refund the difference. Offered to comp tickets then never emailed them. I don't know why it's so hard for some people to just do the right thing.

Julie N.

Yelp
This is a picture of a live venue I attended. The atmosphere was nice. The staff was very friendly and helped answer any questions we had. We didn't eat any food but the drinks were reasonable priced in my opinion. We had a really good time.
google avatar

Teill C.

Yelp
This bar and its drinks are awesome! I LOVE the bartenders here! I have been here across the span of 2 or 3 years... I think it is the owner, andrew?, that is exceptionally off-putting. I have never seen the same bartender more than twice. And have watched bartenders move out of his way. I have watched him refuse people TAP WATER during a kid-friendly event. To the point of refusing to give imbibing-people tap water, merely to have them pay for bottled water, that, in my opinion is gross negligence against your Own Staff!! People come up, needing water for a drunk friend and you say no, to try to make money on them, while blatantly pouring water, from the gun, on the metal bar spill rails where the staff builds their drinks. Props to anyone who can handle this man, go back to photography!

Caroline C.

Yelp
Overpriced. Got ripped off on the amount of pour in our drinks. Bartenders were friendly enough, but tried play it off as they spilled half the shot outside of the drink. Cool aesthetic, but that's pretty much it. Also, this was off of my third attempt to even enter the building. One of the first two times, I declined to pay a fat cover charge for a tattoo event that I did not care to attend.

Jean Ann H.

Yelp
We went on Dolly Diva Night! It was a fabulous time. Will go again if they have another one!

Kylie B.

Yelp
ZERO STARS. Staff was immediately rude as soon as we walked in the door. I am 27 years old & the little girl with the attitude at the front door tells me that my license is fake after she barely looked at it. Maybe you should train your employees on what a real ID looks like since she obviously has no clue. Maybe hire some decent employees that are actually nice & welcoming & know how to properly check an ID rather than un-educated ones with a nasty ugly attitude. The girls up front were purposely choosing who they didn't want to let in just to be rude & trying to start an argument for no reason other than the fact they have nothing else going for them in their lives other than working at a dumpy bar with the other low life sleazy bums that work there so they need something to fullfill their empty lives ... yikes. Should probably hire someone to clean as well. Every toilet in the women's bathroom was clogged. Real classy place guys. Band playing was fantastic I'll be sure to reach out to touring managers telling them all about this dump & their atrocious staff.
google avatar

Cameron C.

Yelp
Amazing place for a fun cheap show. Never ate the food by the venue is incredible and intimate. Saw the canons there with madi sipes and the painted blue. Great joint!

Joseph H.

Yelp
Staff was all reasonable and nice enough, my problem is largely a safety concern with the owner/upper management. After I bought a 9 dollar (lol) Red Bull and a 4 dollar canned water, I asked for a small cup of water an hour later and was told the only water allowed to be served was 4 dollar canned water. I was handed a cup upon further request, which ice was added to upon even further request, and had nowhere to fill it up but the bathroom sink. Not only is it already a problem that a packed venue serving copious amounts of alcohol does not have water coolers/stations placed around the facility as is standard now for bar venues, but the fact that a 4 dollar price point is put on water with no option of tap water save the bathroom sink and requesting 3 times is a safety hazard and a recipe for drunk, exhausted, and dehydrated people to pass out, or worse have a stroke on your floor. I hope the management rectifies this greedy and dangerous decision before it costs them a lawsuit or someone else's health, if it hasn't already.
google avatar

Jay V.

Yelp
Ridiculous and racist! For no reason they took my nephew's ID claiming it was a fake. The doorman said it "looked fake" without any proof. He didn't run it, didn't have a light, nothing. He asked for address after saying it was a fake, which was an old temporary address that nephew couldn't remember. He was also a big jerk and said they were keeping his legal and only form of ID. Cops had to be called in order to get back.

Judy J.

Yelp
So you advertise an event for all ages but will not alloy a teen age boy in with his parents? AND refuse to refund the money. and you ask only people if color to empty their pockets at the door but no one else ? You won't be seeing any of my hard earned money Tulips. Shame on you.
google avatar

Teri K.

Yelp
First time at Tulip's , won't go back, packed with no seating options except outside , with no heaters. All reviews I read talked about how comfortable the place was not tonight!! Standing room only which was limited. The acoustics we're also bad. I have seen Mike & the Moonpies multiple times and they sound much better. I would have paid more for a nicer environment. Sad!!
google avatar

Jordan D.

Yelp
Although I was said Collective Brewing is no long in this location, I'm very excited Tulips took its place! Went for the first time last night. Tried their Paloma and my friend had the French 75. Both were excellent! I can't wait to go back and see a show there!
google avatar

Yelp
This one of the best experiences I have had during covid and really before that. The food is absolutely fantastic and the bartenders (Tia, Emily, and one other that I didn't get a name on this Monday evening. We were just going to pop in for one of the fantastic Rubens but the place was so awesome and the staff was so badass that we spent most of our evening there, well actually all of our evening. We are older but we were totally welcomed into a younger atmosphere. Thank you to the staff for making us feel like we were one of y'all. We don't like being old and we left so happy feeling like we were part of the crowd. If you have read this far, please go. Our local businesses that are great deserve to grow. This one definitely does. 5 stars plus. Love you guys.

Darla W.

Yelp
This place is awful and treatment by the staff to customers is outrageous. I have honestly never seen another place where they are so rude. Your money is definitely better spent elsewhere.
google avatar

Dannielle Nicky C.

Yelp
I will start by saying that everyone that we encountered were super nice, and the reasons that I would not recommend have nothing to do with the service. The venue has entirely too many tables in the space that they have. I was told that they don't usually have tables and I think standing would have been much more convenient. The drinks are priced like a stadium concert not a small hole in the wall venue. And the biggest issue I had was that they gave me a hard time about my purse because it was a backpack purse and they don't allow backpacks. My 11 yr old and my friend both had to have their backpack purses stored behind the bar, which neither were comfortable with. It didn't say anywhere on the ticket that purses were not allowed and when I mentioned that I was told that it is on the website. I don't research every bar I watch shows at, but I guess I will start. I am a rule follower even if the rules make no sense. They searched all of our bags on the way in, and said it is because we could be hiding something or we could steal something? So overall the staff is friendly, and professional; however, based on the drink prices, overcrowding and bag policy I would not recommend.

Caitlin M.

Yelp
Although this was a cool place overall (clean, friendly, nice atmosphere) it was way too crowded to see a band. I think the show (The Mountain Goats) was over sold for sure. We were smushed in body to body and there was almost no air circulation. It kind of ruined what would have otherwise been an amazing concert. It would have been cool to be able to see the band and not just the back of peoples heads.

Gavyn M.

Yelp
I decline to describe at this time...... Edit- I was introduced to this establishment from a coworker turned friend a few months ago. When seeing a positive LGBTQ+ presence, I felt welcomed and wanted to patronize. Upon initial contact with the owner; Jason, whom was extremely rude awhile displaying discriminatory behavior, my friends began sharing stories of their own negative experiences with said owner. None the less, I continued to patronize as never having another word with said owner. As apart of the service industry myself, I understand that people have "off and bad days". What I now understand is that these negative experiences and discriminatory situations from Tulips Staff, and Jason himself is not an off or bad day but more of the true culture there. I was verbally accosted last night by the owner.......after he brazenly interrupted a personal conversation, he continued to speak down to me as if I were beneath him in some form. It is astonishing to me still today that after the amount of time and money I have given to patronize a small, locally owned business that I was treated this way. Needless to say, I politely decided to leave after paying my tab in full and no longer plan to give any business to this establishment. Fast Forward to today- fraud notification from my credit union from Tulips,!!!!!!!! I am not surprised to say the least. When I reached out this afternoon ,,I spoke to a very polite woman by the name of Miranda whom very kindly explained that this was a new occurrence that multiple people have been reporting. It must be with how they preauthorize the debit cards, she mentioned. Miranda also mentioned that the Owner should be looking into it as it is becoming frequent. Just so that we are all on the same page, the following is my experience thus far...... You were rude to me* You have treated me differently than others prior and last night* You were fraudulent in over charging my debit card* You are habitually rude, discriminatory and pretentious with your current staff* You are the perfect example of pretentious and white entitlement* Thanks for taking the time to read my review. I hope this helps others when choosing where to spend your money. Have a good day.

Yelp
Had the pleasure of experiencing John Clarey he last night. The sound engineer got everything dialed in well, the staff were accommodating, and it is an overall pleasant venue. They also have a nice outdoor patio area in the back. Don't hesitate to visit this well run gem for a show!

Yelp
This is hands down our favorite hangout. Cocktails are great, service is impeccable, and the live music is awesome every week. With Jet and Tia in the house, you are going to be well taken care of. You're bound to see all sorts of different folks in on any given night - This place captures the diverse Fort Worth culture we love. Ask for an old fashioned - you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Enjoyed their stellar Reuben sandwich at lunch today. Can't wait to get back for a show! During the short time they've been open, they've booked some fantastic acts. Such a welcome addition to the Near Southside.

Yelp
Amazing concert venue! FINALLY A BAR WITH NO TVs!!! Saw Mahagonie which ended up being a free concert and they were incredible. Venue is very spacious with church pew seating. With their upcoming line up of music, I will be back at least once a week. Pew pew pew!

Yelp
This place has it all! Stella live music venue with amazing cocktails, quality craft beer selection and even kickass sandwiches.

Austin G.

Yelp
Truly love the atmosphere of Tulips! Awesome local art, bar looks fantastic and Tulips is an overall awesome Vibe that Fort Worth really needed. It really has a personality of its own and the live music was awesome! The bathrooms are the cleanest bar bathrooms ive ever seen id compare it to buccees and overall Tulips is very welcoming environment with a great comprehensive liquor selection and vibe and great staff! We will certainly be back more in the future for more shows!
google avatar

Yelp
I came for the live music because my friend was playing. The venue was really nice, hot dog was good and not overpriced. I can't speak for the alcohol but they provided free water which was nice. There's a cute outdoor patio area where the sunset was amazing. Definitely a great hidden gem in Fort Worth to check out if you like artsy-bars with life music.

Mitchell V.

Yelp
Their draft IPA was kinda pricey at $10 but I loved the venue it is very small and my experience was good overall.

Yelp
Tulips is one of my favorites, great coffee shop and deli, natural light and workspace during the day. Amazing live music and bar scene at night. They have it all! Highly recommend

Yelp
They didn't open on time. Then they had small selection of drinks. The staff was temps. They forgot to turn on the a/c. My husband over heated and passed out. They just left him laying there and didn't even check on him. When he woke up they asked if he was partying too hard. We were there for a concert and it had just opened up. I would never return to this mismanaged venue. Web page claimed they serve food. They had zero!! So don't plan on eating there unless you check with them before. And all the manager kept saying before I took my husband out of there was did you pay your tab??? uh Yah our $13 we asked to close it.
