"Tum & Yum has one of the better restaurant names on the Upper West Side, and it also has some of area’s best Thai food. This is a neighborhood spot that looks like a little cabin inside, with wood-paneled walls and a lot of lamps hanging from the ceiling, and it’s a great option for a relatively inexpensive weeknight meal. The food is a mix of standard dishes like pad see ew and drunken noodles and more interesting stuff like a soft-shell crab and duck salad." - Bryan Kim

Another excellent, authentic neighborhood Thai restaurant! Tried their soup and drunken noodles during lunch special ($7.95 for veggie/chicken, $8.95 for shrimp/beef), both were flavor, with just the right amount of spiciness! Portion is generous. Service is very friendly. Restaurant itself is very clean. Really appreciate the great value and pleasant dining experience. Can't wait to return to try their other dishes!

Google
Delicious, authentic Thai food with lots of flavor. The service is always quick and the waiters/waitresses very pleasant, and it's nice to see the owner hanging around the restaurant on occasion. After having lived in Thailand for some time, I think this is the best Thai spot on UWS. And I never had to wait in a line, although it can get busy in the evening.

This review is from a party of 2. Nice decor. Service was reasonable. Food quality is poor. Chicken in soup was rubbery. Salad was too spicy to eat. My girlfriend is Spanish and she said it was too spicy. Overall, a very disappointing experience for the value. We won't return!

Google
Pretty good food and staff was nice to me. I had two kids and a giant stroller with one adult. However, something on the block or in the restaurant smells like gasoline on and off throughout the day. I've noticed it also when just walking down the block. Made it difficult to enjoy the meal. They have room for a fold down changing table in the bathroom, but they don't have one.

Flavor: fantastic and very authentic Portion size: pretty good Lunch deal: definitely worth it A la carte: good Decor: awesome. Great for family, dates, or just college friends Service: excellent. Very friendly All praises for this place. Personal favorites : the pad Thai, the green curry, and their Thai Ice Tea.

Google
Super tasty thai food in a restaurant that is as beautiful as the food. I had drunken noodles, beef and medium spicy and my fiance had fried papaya salad that was medium spicy as well. Both dishes packs a punch, but the spice enhances the flavour rather than hiding it. Both the staff and the drinks are lovely - and during happy hour you get 2 drinks for 1. Would definitely recommend this place for people looking to fill their stomach with good food and quench their thirst with equally good drinks.

Google
Great service, friendly staff, and classic tasty thai food. What more could you ask for? Oh, and I see some negative reviews but it looks like their issue is with seamless and not the restaurant. I have been here 10+ times and have never had a bad experience.

I love this quaint little restaurant. I am writing this review as I sit dining here for a second time in 7 days. Yes its that good. I read an old article about it and saved it to my list of places to go. The prices are very reasonable for the quality of food you receive. The servers are helpful and very sweet. The Pad Kra Prow is bursting full of flavor. They have different levels of hot. I hot a level 6 and it was the perfect seasoning. I love the dish but I wish I could have to types of protein. For example chicken an shrimp. The server said they aren't able to do that. I also ordered Shumai which taste great. It is pretty much a dumplings with ground up shrimp. The decor is very modern and they incorporate alot of wood into it. If you are on the Upper West side definitely make a trip to this spot. They have awesome lunch specials until 3:30pm. And a great drink special from 12-4pm.

Yelp
Excellent food, the pho was beyond delicious and the owners are so kind. My new go to spot 10/10 service

Yelp
While the food was not impressive, there are better Vietnamese options nearby. It was quite salty and didn't stand out. However, the delivery was prompt and the portions were generous.

Yelp
If I could this restaurant a zero, I would. The Thai food was bland, tasteless, old and frankly disgusting. Dumplings not cooked. Spring rolls cold and old. Pad Thai tasteless. Stay away from this awful excuse for a Southeast Asia restaurant.

Leonardo G.

Yelp
The staff here are great people, they will do anything to accommodate your needs. The ambiance is a little too quiet but the owner explained to me that the neighbors used to call the cops on the old establishment before them and they don't want to disrespect the people living upstairs. But he put music on for us to please us; great guy! The food is amazing, the pho broth is delicious!

Yelp
Happened to be around the neighborhood on a weekday lunch time so I sat down for an easy lunch. I was served with a very warm smile once I walked in (from who I assumed is the owner). Got the banh hoi with pork slices - everything is really well prepared. The noodles are cooked just right with a texture that is soft and fluffy, but hard enough to hold the shape together. The pork slices are well seasoned and with the peanut pieces with the fish sauce everything taste so perfect. The Vietnamese iced coffee is very rich and goes perfectly well with the meal. Definitely would recommend if you are around the area!

Xiaomei W.

Yelp
Service was good. However, their Shumai was made from pre-mad frozen Shumais. Five tiny little pieces cost 8 bucks. Unbelievable. Unreasonably high prices. One of the most disappointing meals I've had at morningside heights. There are many other Vietnamese/Thai restaurants in the neighborhood. Will never come back to this one again.

Yelp
Been here a few times. The place is usually pretty empty when I've dined in but multiple people come by for pick up orders. Service is fine, the server has never rushed me and comes by only when called for. I've had beef pho, chicken pho, tom yum soup, mango sticky rice and maybe a few other items from here before. beef pho: pretty good, has enough flavor chicken pho: pretty good but i think it comes with cabbage which I've never seen anywhere else tom yum soup: mostly sour, not much spiciness or spice. I don't really taste the lemongrass, kaffir leaves, etc. Comes with a good amount of shrimp though. Would get if i really wanted tom yum mango sticky rice: I recall it was coconut rice with condensed milk on the mangos. The rice didn't taste like much and i would have liked if the mangos were a bit more ripe. Overall a good experience. I plan to return regularly. One thing that surprised me on my last visit is that they have hard liquor. Most small, family-run restaurants don't have a liquor license but will beer and wines, so this is a standout point. I probably wouldn't order alcohol here but interesting to note.

Yelp
This was me and my roommates go to spot when we lived on the UWS! The owners are soooo nice and sweet, they always remembered us which we loved. The food is amazing, I still think about it to this day. The place has a very cozy vibe as well.

Hannah S.

Yelp
My family and I are big fans of Vietnamese food fans and these has by far been some of the best Vietnamese food we have had. It was hard to choose between all of the different places to eat but this has been a gem of a find! Highly recommend!

Cris K.

Yelp
Standard Vietnamese and Thai fare. Locals seem to come by this place often for takeout. Prices were reasonable, and portions were good. My friend really enjoyed his sandwich. I would definitely come back!

Lynette E.

Yelp
Had a craving for Thai food and this was the perfect spot. Run by a really nice couple, the service was great and the food was really good and the Thai iced tea was sweet and delicious. The space is clean, quiet, and relaxed. Would definitely come again!

Deborah J W.

Yelp
I ate here in 1997 and 2001. Old location in NYC. Very good food and ambience. Not sure these days.

Udochi M.

Yelp
Really good service, but not the best food. Most of the food lacked flavor. I got the crab fried rice and crispy tofu. Both were very bland.

Christine P.

Yelp
The owners here are genuine and authentic. It's tough finding true Vietnamese meals in the city with all the right flavors, so it's a treasure having this be our local restaurant. The food is delicious and portions are reasonable. I've taken countless amount of people here and will continue to recommend it! My go to dishes are the Banh Hoi Thịt Nướng (special vermicelli noodles and grilled pork), Thai Papaya salad, and Thai spicy Yellow curry. The Vietnamese ice coffee is strong and sweet (as it should be)!

Smeeth W.

Yelp
The crispy duck alone with five stars! It's the best crispy duck I got in upper west Manhattan. But the yellow curry was a little salty and the potatoes were undercooked. I would try their other crispy duck foods like the salad but not the yellow curry

M M.

Yelp
Good food and great service. The stir fried noodles with chicken was very well seasoned. Everything was fresh and made to order. I look forward to going to Mekong again soon.

Tiffany G.

Yelp
The food here is SO GOOD. The beef pho and soft shell crab curry are my favorite. I would love to try something with duck next. Also, the owner is the sweetest guy ever. He always greets with a heartwarming smile. I'm definitely a returning customer. Such an awesome family-run business.

Ricardo B.

Yelp
I tried the Roti with chicken and the beef brisket Pho-- both were amazing. I'm glad they have a genuine place like this on the UWS. Definitely going back.

Austin ..

Yelp
I found a hair in my seafood fried rice. I want to like the food but I am unable to do so.

Yelp
I can't sing enough praises for this lovely, dependable, friendly neighborhood joint. We've ordered "Friday night food" from Mekong / Tum & Yum frequently over many years and we can always rely on (1) a REALLY nice delivery person from the restaurant, (2) food that comes way faster than the delivery estimate, and (3) food that makes everyone in our contingent happy. This isn't the best Thai or Vietnamese in NYC -- those with more time on their hands can and should continue to chase down the wonderful places we have for each -- but for an easy, lazy end-of-the-week meal in with our picky littles... this is our sweet spot!! Our picky eaters do pretty well with the beef pho (nicely flavored -- and still too salty -- broth, very thinly sliced beef eye round); and chicken satay; probably-from-frozen spring rolls; and probably-from-frozen curry puffs. One little also enjoys the summer rolls (aka salad rolls) with me, which still include more vegetable matter than vermicelli, which is my preference. The Pardner consistently enjoys the ped kee mao (drunken noodles), which comes with beautifully tender, wide rice noodles, a good amount of protein and enough vegetable matter that I don't worry about scurvy. Pho comes with lime, Thai basil, mung bean sprouts and jalapeno slices, which are par for the course in NYC. Don't come here if you're looking for the best NYC has to offer; do come here if you're in the nabe, looking for a pleasant, dependable, low-key meal.

Yelp
The owners are so nice! They saw a hungry, young, college man and fed him for free! Honestly, I felt like family. They even let me stay over! If you don't eat here when visiting Manhattan than honestly, go back to Jersey. Thank you for the amazing food! I leave with a full stomach and a fuller heart.

Matthew T.

Yelp
I love Thai and Vietnamese food and they met my expectations. The food is very satisfying and tasty! The ambiance is chill and the service is excellent. My colleague was pleased as well.

Vanessa A.

Yelp
I really like the decor. Very quaint. They have a lot of options in their menu. We kept it simple and just ordered pho ( it was a cool night). I ordered the Pho Tai , pho with beef eye round. It hit the spot! The beef was good, not fatty, not tough.

Marylou M.

Yelp
Service was fast. Staff was friendly. The food is good but a little pricey. I had the pork chop with rice and enjoyed it. Will come back to try their pho and thai food.

Blehsyng ..

Yelp
Service Superb. I mean, I only came in from take out, but the waiter was absolutely sweet and offered me a glass of water and a seat as I wated for my food which didnt take long. Now onto the important part... the food, specifically the vegetatian Bahn Mi, AMAZING. It was one of the tastiest versions of the sandwhich I have ever had the pleasure of enjoying. There was no lack of flavor and freshness. I would reccomend to anyone, honestly I wish I could add more stars for emphasis. Bahn Mi specialty spots Ive been to dont even make it this good.

Paul L.

Yelp
We stopped here for a perfectly adequate lunch...pho for me and bahn mi for my spouse

Danan R.

Yelp
This is for delivery ONLY. The food is decent but the portions are absolutely tiny! I had the pad see ew and the green curry and the 2 combined was barely enough for lunch. The menu also stated that the items would come with a drink but no drink was delivered. That being said, the green curry is just okay - a bit on the watery side and not very spicy but passable; the brown rice side is almost laughable - it was literally 1 large spoonful for $1! The pad see ew was decent with tender noodles and savory & sweet - but again the portion was literally half of what you would get anywhere else. There are other Thai options in the area - maybe the Vietnamese is better but skip if you are looking to leave full.

Jasmine N.

Yelp
Super sweet owners, adorable place, and tasty drunken noodles! Would recommend going to anyone looking for a chill time and good vibes!

Yelp
Like the actual Mekong Delta: kind of a disappointment after a visit. My Pad Kee Mao? More like a Pad Kee Massive disappointment. But alas when you're in the area from a day in Central park, options for a large group are few and far between (like literally far between, we had to walk so far to get here). To be fair, my group was 8 people and at 8:30pm ish on a Sunday. Mekong, like the actual delta, was conducive to our bustling group. We were able to get seated and order relatively quickly with options that suited everyone's tasted. I appreciate the mix of Vietnamese and Thai favorites at decent prices, but alas with too many options, the food will almost always fall short in terms of the quality of all these dishes. My group mostly got pho, some Thai noodle dishes (pad kee mao and pad see ew), some one got curry, and one guy got a papaya salad. All of it was eh. I can only speak with complete confidence on my Tofu drunken noodles. Tofu was avg, flavor was kind of off in terms of tasting like they doused it too much sriracha. Noodles were a little overcooked. I was also slightly peeved since my dish came a good 10-15 min after the last person got their food. PLUS someone else also go Drunken Noodles so you think would've had the sauce ready? TL;DR avg thai/vietnamese spot. Gets the job done, but not much else.

Sam M.

Yelp
One of my favorite pop in spots .... the foods always fresh and amazing - the drinks are tasty and strong ! The happy hour is The staff are very sweet & always remember you Not sure how I've never had a Pineapple Martini before - loveeee

Carolina P.

Yelp
Friendly staff who are very great at providing service. Ive been here a couple times for a quick lunch. I have had the Bun Thit Nuong (rice vermicelli with grilled pork) but didn't take the photo. Its a great refreshing dish perfect for the summer, served cold with crispy warm grilled pork slices. The thai iced tea tastes great! Below is the crab fried rice, delicious taste, its a big portion so I had to take some home for dinner. Shrimp shumai was as expected, perfect crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. The dumpling sauce was great too. Will be back to try other Thai & Vietnamese dishes.

Kitty C.

Yelp
Could've been a whole lot better! The duck was hard and dry, seemed to have been leftovers! The softshell crab was tender, at least, but the seasoning was oversweet; the same with the duck. A big disappointment.

Mira M.

Yelp
just ordered this for (free) delivery and WOW it was amazing! for vegetarians, the mock duck is to die for. we got the pad see ew and sriracha fried rice -- both were very flavorful. thank you mekong!!

Jim G.

Yelp
I've ordered from here before but mainly for basic noodle dishes. Last night I ordered the duck with tamarind sauce. The duck did not look or taste fresh. Very small portions of meat. A lot had fat on them as well. We also ordered the spring rolls . They also tasted like they had been cooked earlier that day. The whole meal was an expensive disappointment.

JT T.

Yelp
Ordered the pho tai and would have to say it's pretty underwhelming. Broth lacked any flavor and depth. Didn't try any other foods, but would not recommend this place for pho.

Danny H.

Yelp
Came into Mekong today to celebrate Vietnamese New Year with my honey who is Vietnamese. I haven't had too much Vietnamese food before so I'm no expert, but it was truly delicious! All of our food came quickly, and it was piping hot with popping flavors, herbs so fresh they could have come from a garden, and a mix of textures. I particularly loved the curry puffs and the Vietnamese crispy spring rolls. They also serve Thai food and I can't wait to come back to try that! - Danny

Kim X.

Yelp
I got take out from here so I wasn't able to experience the great customer service thats been mentioned multiple times in other reviews. I got the grilled shrimp with vermicelli noodles for 13.95, which was pricy for the portion and it wasn't great or bad. I also got the calamari for 8.95, which was beautifully fried, but was average tasting. To be honest, maybe also pricy for the portion size. As Vietnamese options are slim on the UWS, I can see myself ordering take out again if I have the craving.

Nhi T.

Yelp
Perfect food around New York. Not easy find out some places like this Nice place, good service, excellent food ( not salty.) . Best place than China Town. Thai Ice Tea 22. Pho Bo Vien 24. Pho Dac Biet

Brian C.

Yelp
Crab fried rice is much worse than the picture on Yelp. The others were fine. Won't order it for a while

Gloria M.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I live in the area and try to hit up a new spot in Manhattan Valley every Friday night. This week, we were looking to stay in an affordable range, but this is increasingly difficult to do at a sit-down establishment in Manhattan Valley. We found Mekong on Google maps and looked at their menu online. They had some of the most reasonable prices for a sit-down experience in the area, so we gave it a go. WE WERE NOT DISAPPOINTED. The place was run by a lovely mom and pop and the entrées were all under $20. We shared 4 curry puffs as an appetizer ($8), I got the steak salad ($12), my boyfriend got the tamarind duck (with veggies and white rice, $19), and then we shared the fried vanilla ice cream for dessert (~$7). He ordered a Singha beer ($6) and I stuck with tap water. EVERYTHING (except for the veggies that came with the duck) was very good, and the service was quick and attentive without being intrusive or at all rushed. The curry puffs and dessert were especially yummy. The decor was also much nicer than the menu prices would have you expect. There are some little things that were strange, for example: the only cutlery we each were given was a fork and there were no cocktails on the menu despite there being a full bar. I would also say the portion of my salad was a bit small. But we were very happy with our experience and will definitely return.

Sarah C.

Yelp
Fantastic phos and Bahn mi sandwich, and the Vietnamese coffee! Additionally, nice service if the owner!

Jonghan L.

Yelp
Great pho spot that won't break the bank! Went on a Thursday night with a group of 4. We each got a bowl of pho (the most expensive, ~$19 dollar option). Soup was incredibly flavorful and aromatic, and the noodles were cooked nicely. Not too flimsy or rubbery which I liked. Beef brisket and slices were also nice. Would recommend my friends to come here whenever we are around the area and needed a quick fixer upper.

Jenny G.

Yelp
This is the perfect Thai/Vietnamese eat if you're around Central Park! The owner is a very kind Vietnamese man who takes pride in his service. We ordered the shrimp spring rolls with peanut sauce (I don't like mine with too many noodles and this was the perfect refreshing mix of greens, shrimp, noodles and peanut sauce. We also got the fried tilapia mango salad which was SO GOOD. Imagine crunchy and flaky pieces of tilapia on a bed of lettuce with shredded mango, red onion in a chili lime sauce. My first time having something like this and it hit the spot! Finally our last dish was the Shang mai chicken. The pieces of chicken were perfectly crispy and moist chicken katsu cutlets drizzled with a Thai sauce. Also served with rice and veggies. Feels like a more quiet place but the quality of food and service was great. Can't wait to come back

Tamara D.

Yelp
One of the best Phó brisket I had in the city. Delicious broth and tasty appetizers. This will definitely be my hangover cure .

Jenny L.

Yelp
Yes and Yes. I was in the area on a Saturday afternoon and stopped here for lunch. They have a lunch special on the weekend and we took advantage of it- pretty affordable. The pad see ew with beef was delicious and husband's lemon grass chicken meal was really good. The Thai ice tea was amazing . If I'm in the area again, I'd definitely stop by here again.

Jennifer N.

Yelp
My husband has been absolutely raving about this place for weeks. Finally, we had to try and I am so happy we did. The Pad Thai was the absolute best I have ever had and I am a huge Pad Thai snob. Everything was so delicious, the service was great, and we will 100% be back.

Kevin C.

Yelp
I came here for the Vietnamese cuisine since I'm always on the search for Vietnamese food in New York City. My wife had the Pho Tai and I had the Pork Chop over rice. The Pho Tai flavoring was decent - it was sufficient but the broth lacked depth and richness. On the plus side the jalapenos were really spicy! The noodles and herbs were pretty standard. The portions were a-okay. My pork chop dish had great flavoring and the portion size was ample. I really enjoyed the broken rice and the side of tomatoes and cucumber. The fish sauce was a bit sweet for my taste - it also needed a bit more lime. My pork chop was a bit overdone as well. Overall this dish was pretty ordinary. The great thing about this place is that the staff was super friendly and one of the chefs is Vietnamese! My wife spoke to her and that experience was super positive. We will be back for lunch here!

Mica K.

Yelp
Best Thai food I've had in the city my favorite is the yellow curry and pineapple fried rice

Nicole R.

Yelp
The food is SO good but sadly very very expensive and over priced. I ordered the lunch special grilled pork over rice and a viet iced coffee. With tip came out to about 20 bucks and what I got was five pieces of pork and a sad little cup of iced coffee.
