Turo Turo - Review - Tooting - London - The Infatuation

"Turn Toro started out as a street food stall—the Tagalog phrase literally translates to “point point”—and this Tooting Broadway spot marks their first restaurant. Expect Filipino BBQ and grilled dishes like beef kare kare, prawn ginataan, and their signature dish, grilled chicken inasal. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Team Infatuation

The Best Filipino Restaurants in London: Where to Eat Filipino Food | Eater London

"Situated on the second floor of a pub in Walworth Road, Turo Turo caters to bar hoppers wanting a bite to pair with their beers. Its vegetarian charred aubergine dish and ginger and bagoong wings drenched in fermented shrimp glaze are tangy preludes to the main event: a four-hour braised pork tocino rice bowl, all from the mind of Rex de Guzman, who recently won acclaim on Jamie Oliver’s Great Cookbook Challenge. Dessert comes in the form of turon, a crisp fried plantain and jackfruit spring roll sprinkled with brown sugar syrup." - Juli Suazo

The food at Turo Turo was average, but the environment was nice and the service was good. We ordered salt and pepper wings which unfortunately were quite bland, chicken canton and prawn ginataan. The prawns had a nice flavour but the portion did seem small for the price. The best dishes by far were the desserts. They all had a really nice flavour and were really refreshing.

As a Filipino, the food taste varied across the menu and was inconsistent. Some were good and some were so bland. The ones that tasted great were: sisig, pork bbq, chicken inasal, salt and pepper squid and kare kare. The palabok was awful- overcooked noodles, no taste at all and I had to ask for some bagoong for some flavour. The sinigang soup was SUPER sour. I love sinigang and I like sour but this was too much. Prawn pancit was good but was too salty (maybe too much soy sauce). Calamansi was ok too, but hardly had any tast when you mixed it. Ube was ok, didn’t taste super authentic as it wasn’t that sweet. Turon was ok, didn’t taste sweet as they used plantain rather than saba. Service was ok, but there seemed to be only two servers (who were nice and doing the best they could) and we waited a long time between dishes, especially after the main, to even get a dessert menu. They were having an event to celebrate their first anniversary, but still if they knew they had that event, they should have put more staff on. Lastly, they need to sort out their door. We were sat next to it and I kept getting the draft because every time someone would come in, it wouldn’t shut properly. It had to be pushed in by someone, and I had to do it twice which isn’t really ideal for a nice dining experience, especially when we came to celebrate my mum’s birthday. I did ask at the start if we could be seated elsewhere but the waitress said they were fully booked (there were two other tables available when we arrived), so it didn’t really make sense to me.

First time trying Filipino food and I loved it! The ginger wings were sooo good, and the grilled chicken was tasty too — smoky on the outside, tender inside. We mentioned in the booking that we were celebrating a birthday, and the staff were super sweet, even sang us a birthday song 🎉 Also tried the Halo-Halo — really enjoyed the ube and coconut jelly inside. Can’t wait to come back and try more dishes next time!

We've been hearing so much about Turo-Turo for quite a while and it did not disappoint. I've been to a few Filipino restaurants in London but this place hits different. The moment you step in, you're greeted with such a warm and friendly welcome, something quite elusive these days. The food was amazing, the place was relaxing and homey, and the service was absolutely impeccable! Our server, Justin was lovely and friendly and went out of his way to explain things to us, and made our stay so pleasant and comfortable. But everyone in the restaurant was so friendly. It was also lovely to have a quick chat with the owner and Chef who was so hands-on in the kitchen. We had the Beef Kare-Kare, Inasal Chicken, Ensaladang Talong, and Turon for dessert! All superb! This place's story is inspiring, and it makes so much sense to have their own space now. Will definitely be back, and looking forward to having a boodle feast next time around. Highly recommend!

The food was just ok. Overpriced. The kare-kare dish was a 2cm thick croquette of pulled ox-tail meat (with the bagoong infused inside) with 3 green beans cut in half, 2 pieces of pak choi and half a baby aubergine. The sauce wasn't enough and it would be nice if they added a small condiment pot of extra bagoong with the dish. Still worth trying though. The sisig was good, enough for 2 people to share. Their ginger bagoong chicken wings were good even though you couldn't taste the ginger or bagoong. Again, the food was just ok. Don't get the mango juice, it's just Rubicon lol. We were a party of 6, and we waited a while for our food to come. Nobody really checked up on us after we finished our meals and we had to chase staff for dessert and 1 of us ordered a coffee which also took long and we also had to chase. Don't get me wrong, I give the owner props for opening a Filipino restaurant in south, and I rate him for doing his thing. However, if you're looking for traditional authentic Filipino food, do not come here.

It was my first time having Filipino food and I was not disappointed by the quality of ingredients and flavours. I thoroughly enjoyed the chefs special which left me completely full by the end of it. The food tasted familiar but it was the freshness of each ingredient that really levelled everything up. Unfortunately, that’s as far as it goes when dealing with the positives. The service was completely lacking on the night that I was dining. I booked the high table and when I got there, the table wasn’t ready. No menu, no cutlery, no napkins and it wasn’t clean. It took over 5 minutes for our waitress to ask for our orders and an extra 5 minutes to finally get cutlery and napkins. After ordering our food, it took quite a while for the food to come out considering we were the last customers (no one else arrived after us). Another negative was the music. While the playlist was great, the music itself was far too loud. I could barely hear myself talk. I understand that it is part of the vibe and relaxed atmosphere - having an intimate conversation was a battle. In general, service was slow and inconsistent - down to even getting the bill. Our plates got taken away, we waited and waited for a waitress to ask if we wanted our bill or more drinks. I had to stare at their manager who then signalled the waitress to come ask us if we needed our bill. Overall, the food was delightful but the sign of a good restaurant is when they strike the fine balance between food and service on a consistent basis. They failed on the service department.

Having been to Turo Turo when they first opened, I knew I wanted to have my birthday party there, so I hired out the restaurant for a Sunday afternoon party. The communication with Rex and his team was excellent, and they answered all my questions so I felt safe that the day would go smoothly. We had to pre-order from a set menu, which was good, as everyone knew what to expect. The food was amazing, and the staff attentive. Front of house, Justin, ensured that the day went without hiccup. The barman created some off menu mocktails which were delicious! And of course we had karaoke to top it off! My family and friends had a great time and we will definitely be coming back.

Been seeing Turo Turo on social media for a while now, so my friends and I decided to try their bottomless brunch / boodle fight. Food: Massive serving. Everyone’s gonna get stuffed for sure. Each food served was a delight. The chicken bbq skewers were the highlights - very juicy and flavourful. The vegetable spring rolls were fantastic as well. Wish they could have an option for Lumpia Shanghai instead but otherwise still tasty. The prawns were also alright they could have made them more buttery I guess. Also, maybe they could add another mussels to make the food options better? All the three dipping sauces were amazing too - soooo good! Overall, this is a very good Filipino boodle fight you would normally expect. Price: £45pp for bottomless drinks + boodle fight sounds really reasonable obviously because of the unlimited drinks. £39pp with just normal boodle fight may be a bit too expensive in my opinion, unless the food is also unlimited but it is not. Additionally, they also charge the 9 year old kid who wants to join the boodle fight in full amount so my friends and their daughter had to cancel joining us because of this which is a shame. Service: All the staff were lovely and the food was served quite quickly too. Justin was also accommodating. Experience: Generally, this restaurant did not disappoint. We were quite pleased with our experience and will surely come back here and absolutely recommend this to others. Improvements: When asked about drinks, initially mentioned calamansi juice was included then few minutes after they came back saying it was not included in the deal. And so my friend chose another drink which was the cranberry juice but came back again saying they run out of it. If I was the server and I knew my customer ordered two things that you said available and suddenly not, I wouldve offered her a better offer to make her feel like she was left with no options 😁 Also, for health and safety reason maybe they could stop putting the food/fruits until the guests arrived. I came there first and saw our table and other table with fruits and food with no cover in an open space and some flies were pestering on the food. This is a bit concerning for safety food standards I’d say.
