A San Francisco Dining Guide to the Food & Drink Scene | Eater SF

"A revived incarnation of a beloved Vietnamese soup mini-chain that weathered a 2023 “doom loop” that shuttered prior locations; in mid-March 2025 the brand was reborn in the FiDi, shaking off negative press. The new outpost offers 10 different kinds of pho, and longtime fans have gravitated toward the Hanoi-style fried chicken wings, which have been majorly popular since the reopening; the relaunch also comes with an old-school business facelift tied to Steven Nghia Pham’s original legacy." - Dianne de Guzman

Pleasant view from around the Hoan kiem lake. Beautiful! Stunning! This is a little far from the Ngoc temple but can be viewed from all sides of the lake. It's a tower for turtles living in the lake. The temple is dedicated to turtles.

Located by the lake and accessed via a beautiful red bridge, this small temple is brightly decorated and worth a visit if in the area. The remains of two turtles can be seen inside - apparently only a handful are left. I can't remember the ticket price but it was not a lot. Enjoy your visit.

Turtle tower is located further inside the lake and can not be accessed by the public. However, you can admire its architectural beauty from a distance while you are around the lake.

Turtle Tower (Tháp Rùa) is a small, three-story structure situated on a tiny island in the center of Hoàn Kiếm Lake in Hanoi, Vietnam. Built in 1886 during the French colonial period, the tower stands as a symbol of Hanoi’s rich history and cultural heritage. The tower’s architecture is a blend of French and Vietnamese styles, featuring gothic arches on the lower levels and a traditional Vietnamese hip roof on top. Each of the three floors is progressively smaller, creating a tapering effect that adds to its visual appeal. The base floor measures approximately 6.28 meters in length and 4.54 meters in width, with multiple doorways that enhance its intricate design. Turtle Tower is closely associated with the legend of Emperor Lê Lợi, who is said to have returned a magical sword to the Golden Turtle God (Kim Quy) in Hoàn Kiếm Lake after defeating the Ming Dynasty. This act led to the lake’s name, which translates to “Lake of the Returned Sword.” Over time, Turtle Tower has become an enduring symbol of Hanoi, representing the city’s resilience and historical depth. While the tower itself is not open to the public, it remains a popular subject for photography and a focal point for visitors exploring the scenic Hoàn Kiếm Lake area. In summary, Turtle Tower offers a glimpse into Vietnam’s storied past and stands as a testament to the nation’s cultural identity.

**Turtle Tower: The Heart and Soul of Hoan Kiem Lake** Turtle Tower (*Tháp Rùa*), a small yet iconic structure, sits gracefully on a tiny islet in the middle of Hoan Kiem Lake, right in the heart of Hanoi. This historic tower is a beloved symbol of the city, representing its rich cultural heritage and deep connection to legend and tradition. Built in the late 19th century during the Nguyễn dynasty, Turtle Tower combines French colonial architectural elements with traditional Vietnamese design. Its three-tiered structure, featuring arched windows and a square base, is simple yet elegant, blending harmoniously with the tranquil surroundings of the lake. The tower’s name and significance are tied to the legendary golden turtle that, according to folklore, emerged from the lake to reclaim a sacred sword from King Lê Lợi, signifying Vietnam's independence and unity. The area around Turtle Tower offers a serene and picturesque environment. The tower itself, especially when illuminated at night, creates a stunning reflection on the lake’s surface, drawing photographers and visitors seeking quiet moments of reflection. Encircled by the bustling life of Hanoi, Hoan Kiem Lake and Turtle Tower serve as a peaceful retreat, offering a perfect balance between the city’s vibrant energy and its historical depth. This enduring symbol is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Hanoi.

Hanoi holds a special place in my heart, ♥️ as it is the first city of Vietnam that I explored. When you're strolling around Hanoi's Hoàn Kiếm Lake, you can't miss the iconic Turtle Tower (Tháp Rùa) standing proudly on its little island in the middle of the water. This spot is like the soul of the city—a symbol of peace, history, and a bit of mystery too! 🌊🏯 Fun Fact: Turtle Tower is connected to a legendary tale about an emperor and a magical golden turtle. The story goes that Emperor Lê Lợi was given a sacred sword by the gods, which helped him defeat his enemies and free Vietnam. One day, while boating on the lake, a giant golden turtle surfaced and asked for the sword back. The emperor, realizing it was time to return the weapon to its rightful owner, threw the sword into the lake, where the turtle caught it and disappeared into the depths. Ever since, the lake has been known as Hoàn Kiếm, which means "Lake of the Returned Sword." 🐢✨ After soaking in the history and beauty of Turtle Tower, you’ll find plenty of food and restaurants nearby to satisfy your hunger. Hanoi is a food lover’s paradise, with options ranging from street food stalls to cozy eateries serving up all the local favorites. Whether you're in the mood for phở, bánh mì, or something sweet, there's something for everyone. Pro Tip: Visit Turtle Tower both during the day and at night when it's beautifully lit up, and the reflections on the lake make it even more magical. 🌙 And be sure to try some traditional Hanoi dishes while you’re in the area—every bite is a taste of the city’s rich culture. 🥢🍜 Whether you're exploring the history of Turtle Tower or indulging in the local cuisine, you're in for an unforgettable experience in the heart of Hanoi. 🗺️🎉
