A New England Clam Shack in Ft. Myers
We are fairly new full-timers in this area and have heard nothing but good things about this place so we gave it try yesterday. We expected to have a bit of wait when we arrived for dinner around 6:30, but when we got to their parking lot, just a few folks sitting outside and plenty of open parking. We went inside to put our name on the wait list and had a chance to look around. A surprisingly small place, just like many clam shacks we have visited in the New England area. A nautical theme decor with tall tables and chairs around the perimeter of the room and low tables and seating in the center. A raw bar sits on one side, but no seating there. Our hostess took our name, gave us a pager and we went outside to wait. There's a small seating area at the front of the building that is shielded from Del Prado by some palms. There are tables with umbrellas and chairs for those that might want to dine outside, and a bar. Several beers on tap, bottled beers and wine. I don't think they have cocktails. I had a 16 oz. Yuengling tap ($5.00) and we took a seat. Our pager went off just a few minutes later and we chose to sit inside as it was a very warm evening. Lindsey was our server and took our drink order right after we sat down - Iced Tea ($2.99). She was very polite and attentive and answered our questions and made sure we never ran out of drink. For starters we got the Whole Belly Clam appetizer ($16.99). They are legit! They are breaded lightly and fried fast. A great clam flavor, especially when biting into the belly where the flavor is fairly intense. Clam lovers like this. I had the Blackened Mahi Tacos ($14.99). Three flour tortillas, each with a base of a creamy cole slaw and a nice piece of Mahi with blackening seasoning and blackened just a bit, then topped with a mango salsa and cilantro. They were excellent. The seasoning was not spicy or salty and the fish was nice and moist. The center of the plate had a bowl of coconut jasmine rice. I am not a real rice person, but this was something else. I could, and did, eat a huge bowl of it! The rice had a light coconut flavor, just a little sweet and somewhat of a floral aroma. My wife had the Twin Tails entree ($27.99). This meal comes with two 4 ounce cold water lobster tails, mashed potatoes, lemon buttered broccoli and a cup of melted butter for dipping. The tails spent a little time under the broiler and were presented picture perfect setting on top of their shells. I could see my wife just melt with every bite of butter dipped lobstah. The mashed potatoes were ok and the broccoli was great - not the usual steamed and plated style. We saw so many great looking dishes delivered to other tables so I think this will become one of our go to places. There are great daily specials also so check them out.
