The Best Soul Food In Philadelphia - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"When you eat great food, you tune out everything else. The only things that remain are your fork, plate, and maybe the Eagles (this is still Philly). That’s the feeling we get while eating a fried whiting platter at Tyemeka’s in Germantown. Their mac and cheese is baked so it has super crispy edges, the greens have a smokiness to them that can’t be matched, and the fish is so beautifully seasoned that you’ll want to hug everyone behind the counter. Sit in their burgundy dining room and look at pictures of the neighborhood or take a platter to Vernon Park nearby, dig in, and head home when you can stand again." - candis mclean

Yo! This place is REALLY GOOD, I’ve tried just about every popular soul food spot in Philly and none of them have anything on Tyemeka’s! The barbecue chicken wings were falling off the bone chile! Mac and cheese was perfectly seasoned it tasted just like the Mac at the cookouts growing up yams were perfect not too sweet and the customer service was on point, I told the lady at the front it was my first time here and she said “And it won’t be your last!” Boy was she right, I’m going back tomorrow LOL! 10/10 highly recommend.

Google
Have you ever walked inside of a restaurant, and you could tell that the food is amazing just by the vibe? I knew it was going to be good, I didn't expect it to be OUTSTANDING! I am impressed! In addition to the food in the photo, I also got lima beans and rice for my mom. I can't wait to support this business again!

Google
My fish platter was perfectly seasoned and the staff was so nice. I’ll definitely be back

Google
This is my was my 1rst time getting the Tyemeka experience....the lady that served me was super-friendly & very informative of all the exclusive items they have...she also told me that I'd be back & once I got home & devoured the platter , all I could do was think about getting more platters 😋.....peep the hefty platter for $16 (Stevie Wonder Isn't She Lovely) *theme muzik* THIS SPOT IS THE TRUTH 2 THE TASTEBUBS!!!

Google
Just called here to order food. I've never been here before. Found them on Google, the pics look wonderful! I asked the lady a few questions regarding the menu and what types of meats they sold. Again, trying to become familiar because I've never been there and I'm starving! So I'm trying to find out what they have that i would like. The lady was super rude!! Cut me off mid sentence like "Are you going to order?" Rudeness is never the answer. Customer service is everything! I will spend my money else where! I hope they get her some etiquette training. She off the chain!

Tanya nobblen

Google
I called to ask a question regarding Uber Eats orders. The person who answered literally said" I don't know nothing about that! What you wanna know?" The most unprofessional experience I've had in while. Huge turn off! But we should support our own, right? Customer service training would benefit this establishment! A $200+ order loss due to unprofessionalism.

Google
Stopped by to check out their Whiting platters. It was very good. Service was amicable. Their rice with gravy was tasty.

Google
The food was delicious. I had the fried chicken wings, mac & cheese, and collard greens. If you're looking for some good soul food at great prices, look no further.

Yelp
Street parking out front. Ordered 3 platters, fried fish with sweet potatoes and greens, fried chicken and another fish platter, don't remember the sides. We wanted potatoe salad with 2 platters but cold salads can't br added to the platter. Called in my order and was told to give them 15-20 minutes and this place is CASH ONLY. Platter came to about $52. I observed a male who appeared to be the cook, 2 females and the cashier. The kitchen area looked too clean for food to have been prepared there but I did observed the yams being pulled out of the over whole there. Noticed an area that held the cold salads. Pictures on the walls, a TV and a few tables and chair inside. The yams were good but could've been cooked down a bit more as some pieces were hard. The mac and cheese was great. The fried fish was perfectly fried, I could've used more seasoning in the batter. The fried fish was good and seasoned well. I noticed they also sold drinks, but I wasn't expecting to pay this amount for lunch, so I decided to go without drinks.

Yelp
I've been coming here for years. Parking: meter street parking. It can get a little tight sometimes but pack patient and feed the meter. Atmosphere low lighting old school set up low noise. Service: family run black owned business. They are very customer focused and are happy to customize your platters. They offer drinks, dessert and different soul food: turkey wings is a popular one. My favorite are their Halal wings which are cooked just right with some hot sauce and garlic and I am so happy. I don't even get home before I've eaten most of them. Overall my experience here has always been good and I always look forward to going back and I miss them when I'm not in the area. I hope you enjoy your experience.

Yelp
I ate it hot and fresh, I ate it cold lol, I ate it the next day! It was 3 of us so we all got something slightly different. One friend got the fried fish with yams and I forgot the second side. THAT FISH, GOODT. My aunt got turkey wings, Mac n cheese, and green beans. Everything GOODT! EVERYTHING!

Dawud B.

Yelp
Food was really good, and they had a variety of soul food choices that many people would find enticing.

Kwan-Lamar B.

Yelp
TyeMeka's is great! Came all the way from New York to get this good soul food. The service is also nice, helpful, warm and smiling. It has the laid back feel of a neighborhood hangout. For anyone that loves soul food, try this place!
google avatar

Samira A.

Yelp
Service was straight forward. The owner greets you and takes the order while the daughter prepares the food. I tried the whiting fish sandwich. The fish was crunchy, flavorful, and a bit salty but not overwhelming. Overall a good fried sandwich on 2 pieces of soft white bread. I waited about 10 minutes for the food. The atmosphere is small with a lot of family photos covering the walls. I took my food to go but there's plenty of space to sit and eat.

Yelp
I had the chance to try TyeMeka's and I was not disappointed. Due to COVID-19 I placed my order over the phone and took it to go. The person who took that my call was very friendly when taking my order. Upon arrival the staff greeted me and told me my they would be with me shortly. I had a short wait as two other customers were a head of me and they make the orders fresh. The food smelled amazing (even through my mask). We had the large fried whiting and wing platters with, collard greens and baked mac and cheese. Everything was delicious! Perfectly seasoned and cooked well. Not too salt or greasy. I got off the turn pike and went out of my way just try this and I am happy I did. It was worth it! I will defiantly be back to try some other menu options.

Yelp
Ordered a chicken wing platter with green beans and mac and cheese and a kiwi straw drink. Chicken wings were delicious, crispy and added a sweet polynesian like sauce that paired really well. Mac and cheese was the highlight of the platter , green beans were little salty for my taste but good flavor , kiwi strawberry drink was straight sugar but took me back to my childhood . Service from the two ladies working they're butt off in hot kitchen was great. They made sure I had all I needed and were very kind . Overall experience 9.1/10 !
google avatar

Sybria P.

Yelp
The turkey wings were so good! The greens tasted salty reminds me of glory greens and the Mac and cheese was average. Gave four stars for great customer service and the great tasting wings. Oh and the jerk chicken was very spicy and delicious
google avatar

L T.

Yelp
By far the best soulfood I have ever had. Jerk wings were amazing, cabbage was unbelievable. Also, the salmon was really good. Can't wait to eat there again!
google avatar

Akilah A.

Yelp
I found this place on yelp and let me tell you I'm so happy I decided to give it a try. I was warmly welcomed when I walked in. I got the Turkey wings over rice with gravy, baked macaroni and cheese, greens, and candied yams. It was absolutely delicious and came up to less than $30. It was ready in about 5 minutes and All the food tasted super fresh. I swear I reminisced about those turkey wings my entire drive back to Harrisburg. I'll definitely be back again. Oh and the orange punch SLAPPED SOOO HARD

Rahman R.

Yelp
Damn I just got my grub on just left here I got the wings turkey and the yams and Mac. Now I wasn't there for ambiance the food was rocking
google avatar

Philly C.

Yelp
I was excited to try this local spot! Unfortunately, this was the absolute worst "soulfood" that I have ever had:( The yams were dry, nasty, brown hard chunks. The greens tasted like cheap canned greens. The whiting had no flavor and the mac had cheese shreds that werent melted and it was also nasty and flavorless. This spot is a hole in the wall but usually the dirtiest looking places have good food- NOPE, not at this place!! I am wrapping it up in a bag as I write this to throw the entire platter away. It was completely inedible. Got me once, never again. My tastebuds wont let me subject myself to such disgusting food. Yuck!

Yelp
First of all, I started not to go in because the window and door was so dirty and grungy. As I walked in, Tyemeka's was on the phone. She did not acknowledge me even though she was looking me dead in the face. A head nod or a simple smile could have sufficed. The girls in the back were very friendly and helpful. I ordered Turkey Wings, Mac and Cheese, and Cabbage & Greens. I had the misfortune of having to listen to the very unprofessional way Tyemeka's spoke to her customer on the phone. It was a real turn off, and I wondered if it would eventually ruin her reputation. The cooking area was not as clean as I would like it to be, yet I gave them a chance. The food was very good. They are heavy on the salt. I enjoyed the food, but I would want to see them clean up the cooking area before I would feel comfortable going back, and I hope the owner's customer service skills will improve. I may go back to see if they get any better because the food was good. This is the issue with some of our businesses. We got to get better with customer service.

Clark E.

Yelp
I ordered 2 platters today, 1 Whitting & 1 Salmon, everything was delicious, it was perfectly seasoned and melt in your scrumptious, I will definitely be back and tell all my friends about this Amazing Soul Food place!!!
google avatar

Lisa C.

Yelp
Today was my first visit to TyeMeka's but it will definitely not be my last! I ordered the flounder for myself and BBQ chicken for my husband and when I tell you this was literally the BEST fish I've ever had in my nearly 50 years! And I'm a pretty decent cook - blows mine out of the water! This is nearly 45 minutes from home but it was worth the trip and oh, service was nice and friendly too!
google avatar

Caroline O.

Yelp
Soul food are always tricky when you know what goood home cooked soul food should taste like. The food was delivered so I am not sure how the restaurant looked like. I order the sticky honey bbq wings with Mac and cheese and candy yams. From the pictures I thought it would be boneless thighs. The sticky wings were wing dings which were good, however I think boneless thighs would have been a better choice of meat. The candy yams were seemed almost bland. If there was a little more sugar and orange juice or marshmallows to make it sweet I think that would have made the dish better. The Mac and cheese was good a little more cheese and slightly overdone would have made the dish !
google avatar

Kareese K.

Yelp
Their customer service is trash and whoever is in there making up the menu needs to be collected. I ordered a fish sandwich and what I received was ONE PIECE of Flounder between two slices of dollar store wheat bread. There was no slaw, Restaurant Depo Condiments , and no napkins. There was nothing not even a dash of hot sauce and no tartar sauce . I asked for their Crab Sandwich Sauce and didn't recieve it. I am not ashamed I turned into Susan with a bowl cut because I want a refund. I was then told that this was a sandwich and their fish platter with two pieces of fish is more generous. Um, IS THIS YOUR KING? Like Imma need black businesses to do better and accept their appropriate Ls when necessary as their manager wanted to go back and forth with me over the phone then hung up. I paid $12 USD with delivery fee in all and I 100% did not get my money's worth. Currently in the process of getting my money back because there will be no challenge today!

Benjamen R.

Yelp
Service was great. Very friendly. Food tastes great, was a little salty for me but I still housed my whole platter.

Yelp
I occasionally pass by this place on my way home from the gym and decided to stop by. I love fried fish and had their fried flounder and whiting. Both were delicious and breaded and seasoned perfectly. The macaroni and cheese and yams were also perfectly seasoned. I will def return.

Yelp
All I can say is this is a "true" soul food restaurant! The food is finger licking good ! My sister was visiting from DC and said she wanted some fried fish. She found Tymeka's on Yelp and since we were visiting family in Germantown we stopped down. It's mostly takeout but there are a few tables if you want to eat in. We found parking on the street easy enough. It's a local place and a few people were hanging out, but everyone is cool. The place was clean and we were greeted by two very friendly young ladies, who I found out later were sisters. They were really nice and helpful. We both ordered whiting and cabbage, my Sis ordeted mac n cheese and I ordered sweet potatoes. ( I really wanted some potato salad, but they were out ! It must really be good, 'cause folks were calling in asking if there was any left ! LOL ! ) The food was ready in about 10 minutes. And those platters were loaded down ! They even gave me some extra mac n cheese since they were out of potato salad, which was nice ! And it was all bangin' ! The fish was fried perfectly, sides were excellent.. I was stuffed ! But more importantly, it was delicious ! I will definitely be back to try the chicken and I gotta get some potato salad ! Check them out. It's a definite keeper on my list of Yelp favorites !!
google avatar

Jay B.

Yelp
Isn't the best soul I had but I guess you get good bang for your buck and That's always a plus

Yelp
As much as i can't stand to bare bad news, this place did not quite fit the bill. Especially not my 36 bills. First, the place reeked of marijuana. The space was fairly clean. The service was great. The staff were polite and helpful. I especially enjoyed watching old episodes of Fred Sanford while waiting for my food. Now that food...smh. I had a crab cake platter with cabbage and greens. The crab cakes were full of imperial and pinchings of crab meat. The cabbage was sweet and the greens taste like they were fresh mixed with Glory. I enjoyed the entertainment, i appreciated the staff but the food was bottom. Sorry, i had to tell the truth.
google avatar

Oliver J.

Yelp
Food doesn't get much better... Great neighborhood spot..Everything I've had here is great especially that Chicken, Shrimp & Broccoli cheesesteak!! Awesome down to earth staff...
google avatar

Chris C.

Yelp
Platter options are several types of chicken (jerk, baked, fried, BBQ) or meatloaf. Large platter comes with 3 sides $9 and small platter comes with 2 sides $7
google avatar

Candace M.

Yelp
I got the small bbq chicken platter with cabbage and mac and cheese. The portion was generous and the food was good. The wait was short too.
google avatar

Nikki C.

Yelp
It's always awesome to have soul food pretty much within a block from your apartment. The atmosphere here is chill but I wouldn't recommend eating in. What I would recommend is taking some type of hypertension meds because you're about to ingest a couple pounds of salt. Okay maybe I'm over exaggerating but I couldn't eat my chicken cheese steak because it was that bad. My old lady had the wings, Mac and cheese and yams. Pretty good price and the sides were ok. I wouldn't go back though because I really need to live without high blood pressure.
google avatar

Kimberly C.

Yelp
I've only been once. First impressions are everything. It's a very small place. Not recommended to sit in and eat. The fact that there were a few guys standing around talking about their women didn't help. But since this place got good reviews previously I figured I'd stick it out and give them a try. I ordered crab cakes, mac & cheese, and greens. The greens and mac & cheese were fine but I was not looking for a side of hypertension with my crab cakes. It seemed like they wanted to be good but the salt messed it up for me. I couldn't enjoy it. Had it not been for that I might have given this place a better rating...as it could've been a hole-in-the-wall hide-away. Maybe the other food is good but I'm hesitant to try after this. A-OK is generous but since all of the food wasn't nasty...
google avatar

Ashley G.

Yelp
My first time trying this place last night and I'm IN LOVE. I got the fried chicken platter w/ cabbage and greens, and added the punch (forgot the name). Cabbage lacked a little flavor imo, but everything else was fantastic. I'm stuffed and thankfully my wallet still is too. Will definitely be returning.

Vincent H.

Yelp
The food is just okay. Moreover, the owner does not have any good customer service skills. The place is hardly ever open. Very inconsistent. It's time for them to close down and just give it up. The place is a shit hole. Totally a waste of good potential. Thumbs down.

Baby C.

Yelp
Food is good but I was charge 18$ for less than 4 ounces of salmon. That's ridiculous! The string beans are spicy and the Mac and cheese was burnt so I guess it was the bottom of the pan. It sucks cuz it sounded like a great platter online.

Traci J.

Yelp
Disgusting food!!!! the lady was sooo ignorant and NASTY thats probably why the food was horrible. This place needs to be SHUT down. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY EATING HERE
google avatar

Malik G.

Yelp
Aye the first time I went and tried this place I was hook my first platter was flounder with Mac& cheese greens do Delicious the staff was friendly and if u love soul food this can be your spot so stop pass and give them try u won't regret it I promise

Garwin B.

Yelp
They had the best crab fries you'd ever taste but took it off the menu because people was only ordering that a lot....the genius who came up idea should be applauded for their stupidity other than that the food is good

Neicey S.

Yelp
Horrible. This food is out of a can and they barely spare the meat. This is not soul food. I was extremely disappointed. People who praise this place are friends and family. There is no way you should be able to serve this food; Nor should they be proud. I love supporting my own culture but I will not be coming back here.

Taurence M.

Yelp
As a first time visitor to Philadelphia from Seattle and a extreme chicken lover & am proud to have stumbled upon this place on door dash.. ladies that answer the phone are friendly and get you situated in a timely fashion. Thank you!

Yelp
I was hungry for some Soul Food and believe me there's no substitute for that when you crave it. I live in Germantown and TyeMeka's is nearby. When I drove up to the restaurant there were a few guys hanging in front of the spot, but I could tell that they were not hostile because there was a barbershop next door and a police station around the corner. I went into the restaurant and immediately noticed that it was very clean and brite, but I was having takeout tonight. I was greeted by 2 very beautiful young ladies behind a counter with lots of desserts on display. One of the young ladies asked me what I would like to order and I looked up at the huge menu attached to the wall. She gave me a printed menu and said it would be easier to read. After going over the many options, I decided on a platter with 4 fried chicken wings and collard greens and mac& cheese, she said that I have to try their potato salad because it was delicious so I ordered that too. Surprisingly the tab came to less than $10. I was having a conversation with her about the business and she told me that it was a family owned and run restaurant that had been open for years. She was so young, her breath smelled like Carnation milk and it was hard to believe that she knew so much about the business. After drowning my wings and greens in hot sauce I was on my way home. A few minutes and 1 devoured chicken wing later, I arrived home to finish off my prey. The wings were crispy and seasoned well, the greens were smokey & tender, the mac & cheese was cheesy and with a slight crunch on the top, and the potato salad was everything she said it would be! I had a great meal and I'm looking forward to trying more of TyeMeka's good ole home-style cooking.
google avatar

Helen D.

Yelp
Really good soul food and friendly atmosphere. Needs to cut back on the salt. TOO MUCH SALT. Would give 5 stars but could not finish my meal because of saltiness

Habib F.

Yelp
This place has good food. Not going to lie - I always get take-out. It's got trap-house soul food vibes so I don't really feel like eating in. Still, I appreciate the consistency of their food quality.
google avatar

Dale T.

Yelp
I live a few blocks from here and just used the free ATM at the 14th Police Station. When I turned right at Germantown Avenue I remembered this Soul food Restaurant. It's a family business. Kenny Latimore and Yazz from Empire have been here and have photos on the wall. The food is excellent!!!
google avatar

Herb H.

Yelp
Great Food! I had the crab cakes, butterfly shrimp, greens and mac and cheese. Everything, I mean Everything is delicious!!! Tyemeka got it going on! Prices are so reasonable they are on the radar everytime I ride by. Definitely a winner.
google avatar

Joanne P.

Yelp
Great food, absolutely delicious the best soul food like my grandmother and my mother cooking
google avatar

Bria S.

Yelp
Food is great & the customer service is excellent . I also love the home style atmosphere. Thanks Tyemeka's!!!
google avatar

C S.

Yelp
Horrible!!! Don't waste your time! Aside from there NOT being even average customer service (tyemeka was talking, no screaming into the phone as we were ordering), the Mac & cheese was old and flavorless, the cabbage tasted as if sugar was added (way too sweet) and the greens and string beans tasted as if they were out of a can. Rice was average and the meatloaf was just ok. Definitely not worth the 24.00 that we dropped. The 3 wings in the large platter was tasty after waiting 15 minutes for it. Wow, so disappointed! While I tend to always patronize my own, I will not return.
google avatar

Tiffany R.

Yelp
No complaints about the food, customer service is friendly and pleasant.....but the marijuana smell through the small restaurant is a problem.....Even though the food was good I don't think I'll go back.....hate to see a business go down due to professionalism
