Udonya Kisuke – Osaka - a MICHELIN Guide Restaurant

"Customers queue up day after day at this popular shop. The udon is made from wheat flour from different regions, which is mixed and then let stand to enhance springiness and elasticity. Tempura of tai fish sausage and onsen tamago covered in broth are favourites. The egg-pot udon is served ‘Kisuke style’: entwined with egg and with dipping sauce ladled over it. ‘O-atsu’, noodles covered in hot broth, came about from customers saying they wanted to eat them in winter, too." - Michelin Inspector

I had been curious about “Udonya Kisuke” for a long time, as there always seems to be a line outside. I arrived at 11:30 for a 12:00 opening, and surprisingly there was no one waiting yet, so I ended up being the first in line. This time, I ordered the bukkake udon with sea bream chikuwa tempura and a soft-boiled egg, as well as the kama-tama udon in Kisuke’s style. For the bukkake udon, the sauce itself had flavor, but it didn’t cling well to the noodles, so the overall balance felt a bit lacking. That said, the sea bream chikuwa tempura was freshly fried and genuinely delicious. On the other hand, the kama-tama udon was much lighter in flavor than expected, and I felt it was too bland. Because my expectations were quite high due to the constant lines, the overall experience felt slightly underwhelming. Still, if you can visit at a quieter time, it’s probably worth trying once.

We ordered the hot udon stirred with raw egg, topped with fish cake tempura, and the hot bukkake udon with fish cake tempura, soft-boiled egg, and kayaku gohan. Both the udon and the rice were absolutely delicious! The raw egg didn’t have any unpleasant smell — instead, it blended perfectly with the udon and broth, creating a rich and smooth texture. The soup wasn’t too salty, and the udon noodles had an amazing chewy texture. Be sure to bring cash when visiting this shop! It’s an unforgettable taste — totally worth it. I’ll definitely come back if I visit Osaka again!

Great comfort food. Udon was bouncy and homemade, and the broth was soothing and flavourful. Meat was lean but thinly sliced so it was not difficult to chew. We ordered fish cake, prawn, sweet potato, and maitake tempura. Tempura was lightly battered, crispy, and not oily. Staff spoke English and was very polite. Recommended place! Food/Service: 8.3 Value: 8.5

Blow my mind good udon. The noodles are chewy and perfectly cooked. The soup the right level of sweetness and saltiness. We had not the cold and hot udon. Both was delicious. You know when it is good when there is a line and the line is made out of locals. Try it and let me know what you think.

Google
Mind blowing udon! This is our second time eating at this place and highly recommend trying the udon soup with beef and add a fish tempura to it. Absolutely delicious! They have an English menu, accept cash only and no pictures or videos are allowed except pictures of your food. They have a very short hours of operation so check it out before going. There is usually a line up outside. It’s a must try in Osaka!

Google
One the best udon I’ve ever tried… they have english menu as well. Everything is homemade and the taste of the noodle is incredible. If you are a big eater, choose to add-on noodle which a very well proportioned size. Luckily there wasn’t any queue when we reach and probably deserves to be more popular!

I really enjoyed the fun texture of the noodle! Definitely worth visiting--my waiting time was about 15 min. Ask them for the menu in Eng. I got a basic Udon(750y) w/ maitake mushroom tempura(250y).

Yelp
Found this one Tabelog's top 100 in Osaka for Udon and the pictures seemed amazing. There's just something about handcrafted udon in a bowl that you can just tell from pictures alone that it's good. When I came here at 12:30pm on a Saturday and there was a 40 minute line, I knew I was right on the money. There is an English menu and they take your order right before you get into the door. I ordered the 1,300 yen udon that had beef and a soft-boiled egg (#21 at the time) and a sweet potato tempura (#C) and prawn tempera (#G) because I was hungry. Breakdown of the meal: Udon noodles -5/5 Broth - 4.5/5 Egg - 5/5 Beef 4/5 The noodles were a knock out! Fresh and delicious. The beef could use a bit of help. It was marinated but the marinate wasn't sweet enough and since it was thin cuts, there's not much taste backing the meat. The prawn tempura which you can dip in the broth is a knockout. The sweet potato tempera was nothing amazing Overall a solid experience! I would come back again if I need udon in Osaka.

Yelp
One of the most delicious broths I've had . The noodle was the perfect texture. The broth was piping hot fr start to finish just the way I like it. I honestly inhaled the entire bowl. My daughter had the tempura prawn added to hers but I stuck with the beef udon, I'm not a fan of tempura anything. Tje beef was succulent and I still can't stop thinking of the broth, it was so amazingly good and clear. Warm and friendly staff, very attentive. There were not many people dining when we went but we heard it gets pretty crowded. Simple decor , there was a sign saying no pictures except for food so I respected that . I suppose it's especially for pics of other customers. Everything was perfect at this quick meal. Beef udon was 1250 yen and prawn was 350 yen. They serve hot or cold udon.

Yelp
It's so hard for me to review places in Japan because I don't really have anything to compare it to. I mean, I'm from Hawaii and we have some amazing Japanese food there but a lot of it can't compare to Japanese food in Japan so I'm afraid it will take a little while for my reviews to be very useful, as far as taste goes :p That being said, I thought Udonya Kisuke was pretty good. The hours I see on yelp at the moment are wrong though so I'll see if I can update that in a bit.. But according to a sign they had posted, they are open from 12:00 (noon) until 9:00 at night. They are closed every Tuesday and the last Monday of the month. Okay back to the food itself- I ate here today with my host parents before heading to the bus station to head back to Shikoku. I got the tempura udon-which had a shrimp tempura and a gobo tempura- for 900¥. In my understanding of Japanese food in Japan, that's not cheap but not expensive also- it's average I suppose. The broth was piping hot when they brought our udon over. The winning factor for Kisuke is the broth. Their broth was pretty good and filled with flavor- especially for a broth that's so clear. I hate it when the broth is murky. It makes you wonder what's in it. The only problem I had with the taste was that the udon didn't seem to absorb very much of the broths flavor very quickly. The first few bites I took seemed pretty bland, but that's probably because it didn't have much time to soak in the broth because by the time I was half-way through, it was perfect. If you decide to come for lunch on a weekend, try to come early. We got there about 1:30. Shortly after we ordered, we noticed a line of paper waiting outside.
