Best Restaurants for Solo Dining in San Francisco | Eater SF

"For those seeking a place to be alone in the crowd, the bustling hallways of Japantown’s two malls make the perfect escape. After you peruse every aisle at Daiso, duck into the warm wood-wrapped dining room at Udon Mugizo for a bowl of heart-warming udon. The bouncy noodles are made on-site and are perfectly slurpable whether swimming in a rich tonkotsu broth or drenched in Parmesan cheese sauce." - Paolo Bicchieri

Udon Mugizo - Review - Japantown - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"As you’d expect from a place that has a noodle in its name, there are 18 different udon bowls at Udon Mugizo. The casual Japan Center spot is the easy answer when you need a last-minute dinner, a low-stakes date, or a meal with a group who has a mixed bag of dietary restrictions—the housemade noodles can go with everything from shrimp tempura to beef curry to spinach cream sauce and smoked salmon. Overwhelmed by the choices? Tonkotsu all the way. It’s got a rich and spicy pork and fish broth that soaks into the slippery udon, and the side of fish powder that goes with it adds an extra umami punch. Tables are walk-in only here, so if there’s a wait, you can wander the mall or plop down on a bench outside." - Julia Chen

The Best Mall Restaurants in the San Francisco-Bay Area | Eater SF

"There’s absolutely no shortage of excellent dining options within Japantown’s two malls. Craving ramen? Put your name in early at Marufuku. Want sushi? It’ll slide by on conveyor belts at Tenroku or come in tasting menu format at Oma San Francisco Station. But the pro-move is a retreat behind the warm wooden walls of Udon Mugizo, where you can lose yourself in a big bowl of creamy udon crowned with smoked cod roe or uni. There may be a wait but you can head just across the hall to browse the shelves at Kinokuniya bookstore while you wait." - Lauren Saria

The Best Takeout in SF - Eater SF

"Ramen tends to get all the love, but if you need to be reminded of the pleasure that can be wrought by a bowl of udon — those thick and springy, wheat-based noodles also of Japanese origin — look no farther than Udon Mugizo. It’s a Japantown standby, and I’ll be honest, I just love wandering the echo-y, winding halls of the aging malls on a Sunday afternoon. And even if there’s a 45-minute wait for a bowl of ramen right across the way, you can usually get a table at Udon Mugizo within a reasonable amount of time. The uni-topped option was sold out on both of my recent visits (I’m really into this dish, y’all) but the mentai cream sauce makes a more-than-acceptable backup choice. This highly slurpable tangle of fresh noodles delivers creamy, cheesy flavor that’s brightened with a flurry of green onion and seaweed and pops of salty roe. It’s comforting and somehow a little bit decadent at the same time." - Eater Staff

Google
The combination of walking around a windy/rain SF and the piping hot cauldron of Nabeyaki Udon with tempura was perfect 👨🏻‍🍳💋 Service was quick and efficient, plus patient when I could not decide what to order. The minimal dining room was great for people watching/listening as a solo diner myself. Highly recommend.

Google
Udon has good texture. Love their salmon Spanish creamy udon. Mentaigo creamy udon was good as well. Gyoza was delicious wrapped in shizo leaves. No wait around 3 pm Sunday afternoon. Fast service. During weekend dinner time it was over an hour wait.

Google
It was just ok Udon. Soup was oily. Meat was disappointed really nothing special. If you’re like Udon, you might give it a try. Small portion and a bit pricy. I was be seated right next to another table, it was really noisy. Barely to hear and chat with your friend. Not recommended if you go with friends for chatting.

Google
A delicious variety and large portions of hot and cold udons, and lots of choices for delicious appetizers and drinks as well! My party of 4 signed in on a waitlist and was told we’d need to wait about an hour but it ended up being closer to 30 mins. Thankfully there were a lot of cool stores to check out in the surrounding area! After we ordered, our food was brought out very quickly and we were surprised at the size of the dishes (didn’t even order large!) I would highly recommend the Mentai Cream Sauce Udon if you like the taste of seafood, or Niku Udon if you want a warm, soup based meal. There are also combination dishes like the oyakodon that have rice. I also enjoyed the agedashi tofu and tempura, which are tasty shareable appetizers! I’d happily visit again the next time I’m in SF, and will recommend to anyone wanting to visit Japan Town! 😋

Food: 3/5 Service: 3/5 Ambiance: 3/5 Overall: Standard fare. The extended review... Food: Tonkatsu Udon Deluxe - 3/5 - It comes with a lot of fixins which is nice. I'd say that the taste of it all was pretty standard fare. Extra Udon - 3/5 - Can't go wrong with more noodles. Standard fare in terms of taste and texture. Service: 3/5 - Standard service. Ambiance: 3/5 - Nice ambiance similar to most of the other restaurants in Japantown.

While exploring Japantown, it was difficult to decide where to eat lunch as there were many choices. I decided to give Udon Mugizo a try. The service was friendly, fast and the food was excellent. It has a nice chill atmosphere for you to enjoy some peace and quiet.

Google
One of the best Udon restaurants I have ever been. The service was perfect (super friendly and fast). And last but least the dishes where super delicious. My kids loved the soda with the blinking lights a lot.

Google
A favorite!! The beef in the curry is so tender… and they fry stuff so well! The portions are very satiating. Drinks are good, and rice dishes are good as well. Have been coming here for years…never misses.😊😊🍛🍜

Yelp
the people were very sweet! I enjoyed my udon cold udon with spice it was SO GOOD. I also tried the creamy one and it was a great fusion of creamy pasta flavors but umami and delicious. It wasn't too pricy either and the portions sizes were huge. A regular got me STUFFED.

Chewy, flavorful udon with rich broth--Udon Mugizo is a comforting, must-try spot! Loved it

Yelp
Me and my gf came here on a Friday night and it was quite busy so the wait was about 30-45 mins, we just walked around the mall We got seated & ordered a mentaiko udon, a curry tonkatsu udon & dassai sake glasses The mentaiko udon was AMAZING, it was both of our favorites So creamy & packed with mentaiko, fresh micro greens to help balance out the fishiness The udon was soooooo bouncy and chewy, seriously one of the best udons I've had The curry tonkatsu udon was good too, the curry itself was packed with beef, carrots, onions and potato. Not too sweet or salty, paired so well with the udon The tonkatsu however was a bit underwhelming, it was very crispy but the pork was super dry. The dassai sake glasses were super good, we love dassai! It has a very floraly palate but very smooth Overall we had a great experience, service was great, food was amazing & the vibes were absolutely perfect for our reunion dinner Highly recommend to anyone looking for some really good Japanese udon!

Yelp
Found this gem tucked away in the Japantown mall! Ordered the Tonkatsu Udon at medium spice level and was blown away by the rich, flavorful dashi broth even though it was NOT spicy at all! The tempura was perfectly crispy and really elevated the entire dish. Despite being in a busy mall location, the line moved surprisingly fast. Fair warning - this is a hearty, filling bowl that might leave you feeling a bit heavy afterward. Come hungry! Bottom Line: Solid, authentic udon that hits the spot. The broth alone makes it worth the trip to Japantown. Will definitely be back to try other menu items.

Yelp
7/30/25 Recommended in Netflix tv/Someone Feel Phil FOOD:*Tonkatsu brothwas very, very tasty! delish; udon was perfect "chewy"!!; *Shrimp Tempura: Fried crisp batter...crisply delicate with Delish Dipping sauce (asked for more to take home leftovers). * Pork belly udon had perfect balance of fat and meat. * Service: Excellent; server attentive; water glasses filled; friendly without being obsequious; * Ambiance: Requested "upside" seating bc brought toy poodles; table was in the shade under awning; establishment is relatively "small"/cozy. I would definitely return. Very pleased!

Yelp
My go-to spot for udon. The food: I usually opt for the Nabeyaki Udon (4.5/5) but this time, I finally tried the famous Mentai Cream Sauce Udon (4.5/5)! At first, I had my doubts about it since I'm usually more of a soup udon fan vs sauce/dry udon. I was pleasantly surprised by the creaminess and umami of the mentai cream! It actually wasn't as fishy as I expected, and the cream sauce wasn't overly filling. The udon was perfectly cooked and had a nice bounce to it. As the sauce cooled down toward the end, the sauce tasted a bit more salty + fishy BUT it was still yummy! The service: expect to be rushed as there is usually a 30 min+ wait time on weeknights, and even longer lines on the weekends! The ambiance: nothing special, noise level is moderate to high Pro-tip: get on the Yelp waitlist BEFORE arriving

Yelp
This place never disappoints. Long wait time to get it but their virtual line system is working well. And generally you get system by the system earliest estimate. The gentleman doing the seating was very nice. It's buzzing inside, but nice and cozy atmosphere. But you come here for the food. Always delicious.

Yelp
This place is probably the only restaurant in the city that I absolutely love and adore. I tried this solo on a whim on a Sunday night because I was in a rut and thought noodles would cheer me up. This was a life changing meal for me! The noodles are so perfect. I tried the Tonkotsu udon and I loved every bite of it. The meat was extremely flavorful and tender, the shrimp was perfectly crispy and the broth was so so comforting. On a second visit I tried the mentai creamy udon and it was tasty but just not my thing. I will say it was very unique, I've never had anything like that and it was delicious but I like something that's more protein and veggie heavy and that just wasn't. Service here is great too. You can join the waitlist on Yelp which is what I did but sometimes it can jump quickly so just be nearby while you wait. Once your table is ready the staff is very attentive and accommodating. They work pretty quickly and once you're done and out they will very quickly clean up the table and get ready for the next guest. The ambiance here is nice and relaxing but feels slightly upscale. Depending on where you it the lighting can hit you harshly so just be aware. Besides that I've already been back to share the spot with a friend who has loved it. This has now been declared my new favorite restaurant. I'll be back!

Yelp
If you're in the mood for udon while In SF, Udon Mugizo is a must. With so many tempting options at Japan Center, you definitely don't want to miss out on this one. Be sure to get there early as a line starts forming before they open. I tried the tonkotsu udon deluxe, which was so good. The pork and fish broth was rich, creamy, and flavor. It came with a few pieces of chashu, 1 shrimp tempura, and a big chunk of pork belly. So meaty! Loved the additional of spinach and tempura bits as well. I also couldn't help but order their lychee soda, which I thought was just okay. I also tried some of the strawberry soda which I thought was much better. But for $7, I'd skip these next time. Service was standard and food came out rather quickly.

Yelp
Wish we had more udon places in Sacramento! This was so delicious, maybe even better than some of the more popular udon spots. It's located on the upper level of the Japantown Center, just across from the bookstore. They have a Yelp waitlist but there wasn't a wait when we came on a weekday so we were seated very quickly. It's a smaller place so I would definitely check Yelp first on your way over. The takoyaki was cooked perfectly! It was a great appetizer to start off. The presentation here is so nice, and also the food came out FAST! We were done in maybe 30-40 mins total from being seated. They have plenty of options for udon here, I picked the cold spicy niku. Definitely on the pricier side but again it's San Francisco. They did not skimp on ingredients either. I was plenty full afterward! The meat was so tender and my favorite part was the spicy chili oil, it was crispy crunchy and spicy! I'd buy a jar of that any day. Service was great, as I mentioned the food came out so fast. Really great option for a quick but quality meal here in the mall!

Yelp
This is the best udon spot in Japan town as of now Despite the prices continually going up, the quality of the udon and chashu make it worth it. We arrived around 1230 on a Tuesday and were seated immediately. Staff was kind and prompt with service. The only downfall for me was the spinach was missin. If only they could replace that vegetable with something more fresh to emulate Japans identity of fresh cuisine.
google avatar

Jia M.

Yelp
The Mentai Cream Sauce Udon was delicious! I like how the udon didn't taste fishy from the cod roe! This dish can be a little heavy from all the cream. We also got the Tonkotsu Udon but it didn't really taste like a tonkotsu soup base that you would get from ramen. I would not recommend this dish since it's a bit bland and didn't really taste like a pork soup base.
google avatar

Erica L.

Yelp
I think the flavor has maybe changed over time? I've been here 3 times before and always enjoyed bringing my friends and family here because I think the udon is the best in japantown. However for the past 2 times, I've noticed the quality decreasing :( Cons: -Every soup was salty and we drank a lot of water alongside the meal. -had to wait 40 minutes even on a weekday because they've gotten so popular - the pork katsu as a add on was a 1/5 because it was not one bit crunchy and the meat was very dry and flavorless. Pros: - food came out really fast after ordering - tempura were good and really big shrimps. - Takoyaki was hot and delicious - soft boiled eggs were super jammy and great for a soup dish!

Yelp
I was doing some shopping in Japantown and I haven't tried this spot yet so here I am. I ordered the nabayaki udon and I also ordered the packed lychee soda. The udon noodles were pretty tasty and the portion sizes were generous. The lychee soda was really good and I thought that the colorful blinking lights on it were cool. The service here was good. The food came out pretty quick. On yelp, the waitlist said 30 minutes, but I got in right away. Anyways, Try it out if you like. :)
google avatar

Melody L.

Yelp
Udon Mugizo is hands down one of my favorite udon spots in San Francisco. It's located inside the mall in Japantown, so it can get pretty crowded, and the wait can be long if you don't plan ahead. They usually have a waitlist you can join, but since our party was larger than 7, we had to call in to make a reservation. Everything went smoothly, and even with 8 people, the service was quick and super friendly. The noodles are always perfectly chewy, and the broth is rich and comforting. Whether you're into hot broth or cold dipping udon, they nail it every time. If you're in Japantown and craving noodles, this spot is a must. Just be sure to book ahead if you're going with a big group!

Yelp
I was so afraid about this place being overhyped but it truly owns up to its reputation! We went for early dinner on a Saturday, waited about 15 minutes before being seated. Our first time, the service was great and suggested everything we got. The place was busy and there was light music playing in the back. My order: Mentai Cream Sauce Udon - Server told us that this was super filling and heavy, it's basically an udon pasta. It was so delicious and I've never tasted anything like this, I would go back for this. My bf and I shared this, but he could've inhaled it if starving. The marinated roe took the stage and made the sauce so umami! Tonkatsu Dotonburi Combo - To balance the Mentai Udon, I got this and was able to try everything. The Tonkatsu was soo delicious the best part was the light broth on the bottom from the steamed egg. The mini udon was a classic, I wanted to try this to judge the rest of their udon other than their best seller and they did not disappoint. Definitely was too full to finish it though. Mini note on the rice, it was so soft and well cooked. It paired very well with the tonkatsu egg. Bonus!! If you get our exact order, I'd recommend putting the Mentai sauce on the rice and enjoy the rest. :)
google avatar

Andrea K.

Yelp
Great udon option if you are in JTown! I particularly liked the tonkotsu, and their shrimp tempura was delicious despite being soggy from the soup. I'd say their mentai cream udon is overhyped, it does get salty and overpowering after a while. I also took a bite of the katsu, and it was fried very well, so I'd recommend anything fried item from their menu. Overall, the price is very reasonable for SF, service is great, and the restaurant has a nice wooden Japanese vibe.
google avatar

Kaitlyn L.

Yelp
Mentai Cream Sauce Udon- 4/5 Deliciously creamy and cheesy with great texture from the fresh green onions and tempura crunch. It tasted like an Italian Alfredo sauce. Super rich. Assorted tempura -3/5 The tempura had a lot of batter and was quite doughy and dense inside instead of being crispy and light. I probably wouldn't order this again. It had a decent amount of shrimp (3 pieces) plus broccoli, squash, and other veggies. Beef sukiyaki udon- 3/5 Sukiyaki is typically a sweet dish, but the soup was almost too sweet. It had a lot of condiments: beef, fishcake, and a soft boiled egg on top, but the soup base was not my favorite.
google avatar

Yelp
I am shocked I haven't written a review for this place yet! It is an absolute must after a spa day in Japantown. Pictured: salmon spinach cream sauce udon which is DELICIOUS but my go to is the basic vegetable tempura udon. The noodles are absolute perfection, you really can't go wrong here. They can be a bit busy around the lunch hour but I've never had to wait more than 30 min!
google avatar

Yelp
This was my first time trying Udon Mugizo in SF. I've been to both their Mountain View and Saratoga locations and the udon quality was excellent! I wasn't surprised when my most recent trip was both comforting and delicious. I came to Japantown SF to do some Labubu and Sonny Angel hunting with a friend. After all of the shopping, we were super hungry but didn't want to wait over an hr for a table. Although the entire mall was PACKED and filled with long wait times, this restaurant had the shortest wait -- about 45 min. First off, this restaurant is really cozy and I love the traditional Japanese aesthetics! The look gives off a traditional wooden Japanese dining room with lots of warm lighting, paper lanterns, and bamboo finishes. They also have a viewing window off to the side where you can watch the fresh noodles being carefully made. I really loved all these touches! Depending on how hungry you are, I like that this location has two different portion sizes of udon-- regular or large. Not only do they have udon, they also offer freshly fried tempura a la carte. I ordered the Beef Sukiyaki Nabeyaki Udon (regular), my friend had the Niku Udon (regular) with a side of homemade spicy sauce, and we shared an order of the assorted tempura. For drinks we both ordered the Moshi Sparkling Yuzu. I had the white peach yuzu and my friend had the yuzu original. Here is a rating of each dish I had: -Beef Sukiyaki Nabeyaki Udon (5/5): I highly recommend! Served in a cute clay pot, this dish was generously filled with thinly sliced beef, mushrooms, fish cake, and a delicious soft-boiled egg. The broth is flavorful yet light and the noodles are hot, slightly chewy, and smooth. I also suggest ordering a side of the homemade spicy sauce for a bit of extra flavor and heat. The sauce is similar to a chili crisp with a hint of fish flavor. -Assorted Tempura (5/5): The tempura was fried perfectly! The dish included fried shrimp, squid, broccoli, eggplant, and sweet potato. The shrimp and squid were succulent and the fried vegetables were very tender. I appreciated the freshly grated daikon radish and ginger on the side to cut the richness of the tempura. You'll want to add it to the dipping sauce that they provide to add more flavor and freshness. Both the atmosphere here and food at this location was very comforting and inviting. The flavors reminded me of some of the traditional udon dishes my grandma used to make me growing up. I'd come back for the nostalgia :')

Yelp
Mentaiko udon is so good here- it's like a pasta carbonara- really creamy! Partner got the curry udon and it was a lot of food. The agedashi tofu was delicious and we were overall really lucky with no wait!

Yelp
Perfect noodles... The broth was very good; love the side of fish powder to adjust strength of the broth.

Yelp
I have visited this udon shop several times in the heart of Japantown SF. Most recently, I went with a friend during a weekday night, and even at 8PM, we had had to sign up for the Yelp waitlist and wait for about 20 minutes before being seated. I ordered their Mentai Cream Sauce Udon most recently, along with a Sapporo Draft beer. Even as a lactose intolerant person, I was still curious about this creamy udon in this restaurant that was filled with people and different wooden framework that separated customers. The udon itself was delicious, and I enjoyed missing the seasoned cod roe with the rest of the dish. The creaminess was not too overwhelming. The udon combined with the beer balanced out the taste quite well. Overall, Udon Mugizo is a common pick for an udon place in the Japantown mall!

Yelp
Spectacular each time!! This location got everything right. I've tried the one in SJ/Santa Clara as well, and also reeeally good. But something about location hit different. We came in a little before closing ~8:30pm and they sat us right away, treated us well, and our food came out fast and hot. I got the Tonkatsu Chashu Udon, they give such great pieces of Chashu and the broth is super flavorful. The tempura for appetizer is always good -- really crispy and yummy. Overall cannot go wrong with Udon Mugizo. Oh yeah i took the rest for leftovers the next day and it was even more spectacular!! 10/10!

Yelp
I had a great experience at Udon Mugizo! Being one of the best udon places in the bay, this restaurant definitely lives up to the hype. I joined the waiting list online when I was ten minutes away, and right when I parked, I got a phone call and text saying my table for 2 was ready! We went into Japantown and informed the server that we had arrived. My partner and I were seated very promptly, and the restaurant was very homey. It is a little small, but extremely cozy. We placed our order and they all came out within minutes of each other. The agedashi tofu was the most delicious appetizer I have ever had. The coating was light and sweet, the tofu soft and warm. I would get this again every single time. My curry udon was also great! The udon was bouncy and had a nice chew. The curry itself was flavorful, I wish it had a little bit more umami, but they were generous with the potatoes and meat. The katsu was also great, breaded well but just a touch dry. My partner also enjoyed his mentai cream sauce udon, it reminded him of pasta. He said it was addicting because of the cream sauce, but can get heavy. Overall I had a great experience! A must visit!

Yelp
Simply delicious with a consistently fresh and bouncy udon bite EVERYTIME!! Since this visit, hadn't been to Udon Mugizo since high school and wow have I missed it. Everything from the extremely welcoming and attentive staff to the perfectly crispy tempura bites, this place definitely tops my must try udon places. My sister and I shared the Mentai Cream Udon and the Spicy Niku Bukkake Udon and that was hands down the best combination. While the Mentai cream udon was rich and tangy, a whole bowl of it would've felt really dense to me so the Cold udon cut some of that thick creamy sauce with a refreshing and savory note. Also a shout out to our waitress! She was just the most bubbly gal ever--wish we got her name but she truly made everyone in that place smile with her energy. If my friends are ever visiting Japantown I'll definitely be taking them here to try!!

Yelp
Visited on a weekday night around 5:30pm and was seated right away! We both ordered the Tonkotsu Udon but I got the deluxe because it came with braised pork. It was delicious! The broth was creamy and savory, with a nice spice. I loved the ambiance and cozy feel of this place. Service was great too! Definitely recommend this spot to anyone looking for a comfort meal.

Yelp
Again, a great experience! On a Saturday at 6:45pm, we queued up for a table of 2 on the Yelp waitlist; our table was ready by 7:50pm. We got a large mentai, a vegetable tempura, and a takoyaki appetizer, which was more than enough for us both. The mentai is so creamy and rich! There's chili powder on each table if you want extra spice. The tempura added a nice extra crunch. Service was nice and food came out really fast!

Yelp
Located on 2nd floor in japantown. Get on the waitlist ahead of time. Usually it's around like an hour or more wait. I came on a Sunday around 6pm and had to wait around an hour to get seated. It was really hot that day but Im sooo happy they have cold udon. I got the regular size NIKU BUKKAKE UDON ($18.75) and it was sooooo gooooood. Perfect for the hot weather. The size was pretty good where it can fill up a medium sized girl. I am so happy with this and would love to come back to eat it again. The people working here were nice too. Also Bathrooms are outside of the restaurant all the way in the corner.

Yelp
I ordered Uber eats from this place and WOW udon tasted absolutely amazing like I was in Japan! I highly recommend Mentai Cream sauce udon! I can't imagine how good it is if you actually eat it at the restaurant!!

Yelp
Went here during the cherry blossom festival with a group of friends, so there was a crazy long wait of around 2 hours. My friend checked us in online so at least we got to walk around. I'm glad we chose this spot! I was starving, so I picked the tonkatsu chasu udon with the extra meat. It was delicious with a deep, rich flavor. I loved the chewy texture of the udon. The egg was made perfectly - Dark orange, strong soy sauce flavor, and runny. It's what makes a good ramen into a great one! If I had to nitpick something, I wish the pork was a bit fattier/more tender, and that the waitress checked in on us at least once, but the meal was still so good. I will definitely be back. Food came out in about 20 min, but I went during arguably the busiest time of the year so normally it's probably faster.

Yelp
I added myself to the Yelp waitlist and got an estimated wait time of 35-60 minutes. Got a text 25 min later saying my table was almost ready and to see the host but was not seated until 20 minutes after the text so waited 45 minutes. This was a Saturday at 2pm. Thankfully I wasn't too hungry otherwise that's a little frustrating. I got a beef sukiyaki udon and my friends got the curry udon and katsu curry udon. We also got the corn tempura to share. First time having corn tempura and it was good but shrimp is definitely my favorite in general. The beef sukiyaki udon was super good, the broth was a little sweet which I liked and plenty of beef and noodles. The curry udons had massive portions because it also comes with a bowl of rice. Service was great. Food came out fast and they were constantly refilling out water which was nice. I definitely recommend adding yourself to the Yelp waitlist beforehand and walking around the mall while waiting because most places will be busy.

Yelp
We visited on a weekend and, even though it was busy, we were seated within 10-15 minutes for a party of two which is not bad at all. Service was fast, efficient, and friendly. Plus, the location in Japantown is super convenient! I always order the mentai cream sauce udon, and it's consistently delicious. The sauce has the perfect balance of creaminess and flavor without feeling heavy or overpowering. The udon noodles were perfectly cooked (I prefer mine al dente), and I loved the variety of toppings. They also provide a spice powder at the table so you can customize the heat to your liking. The portions are very generous too--I even had enough to take some home. Highly recommend checking this spot out if you're craving udon! Japantown is always a fun area for food and shopping.

Yelp
My friends and I came here for dinner on Saturday. We joined the Yelp waitlist prior to arriving to the restaurant, so by the time we came, we didn't have to wait. We got to the restaurant a little before 7pm, and it was pretty packed. The restaurant itself isn't that big. This was my second time eating here, but I don't remember the first time at all. This time around, I ordered a Tempura Zaru Udon, which is a cold udon, and added Ajitama (+$3.00). When the staff brought out our dishes, they explained how best to enjoy each of our dishes, which we appreciated. I didn't get their name but they were very friendly and enthusiastic. I love a cold noodle dish, and the Tempura Zaru Udon was delicious. The sauce was refreshing and well seasoned. It was neither too salty nor too bland. It went well with the noodles and tempura. The ajitama was a good add on. I don't know how they did it, but the yolk was thick but still runny. It was really good. My friends and I also ordered a Vegetable Tempura to share. This included corn tempura, which I never had before this. It was very good. Overall, we enjoyed our time here. Great food and great service.

Yelp
We all got the tonkotsu udon and loved it! The serving sizes are quite large and food comes out quickly. Show up early to avoid a long wait, especially if you want to come with a big group.

Yelp
I love love love their udon so much. These two are my favorite udon dishes from Udon Mugizo. The mentai cream sauce udon has a bit of spice but it's so creamy. The nabeyaki udon is also super good & perfect for cold days! Staff are so nice and quick with service! The restaurant is pretty small but they have a waitlist so just join the waitlist and wander around the mall until it's your turn. It's worth the wait, I promise!

Yelp
One of my favorite restaurants for udon! They offer fresh udon noodles (either hot or cold) and a wide variety of udon dishes. My personal favorites are Tempura Udon (pictured here), Niku Udon, and Tonkotsu Udon. The warm, flavorful broth and fresh ingredients make this a hearty and comforting meal. I highly recommend visiting if you're in Japantown!

Yelp
I was looking for a place for a late lunch on a Friday and I was surprised by how busy Udon Mugizo was. Every table there was booked. At the front, you can put yourself on a waitlist and you will be texted once a table is ready for you. Luckily, I only had to wait a few minutes before I was called up and seated. Their menu here isn't too big so it was easy for me to make a selection quickly - I decided to get the Niku Udon as well as their pear and yuzu sake cocktail. The udon came out a minute later, I was shocked by how fast it was. The food was absolutely delicious though - the sweet, marinated beef paired well with the over easy egg mixed in and the udon noodles are super fresh and soft, with the broth being very umami. They provide chili powder on the table; I like having my udon broth with about a teaspoon of the chili powder mixed in for an added kick. I easily finished my entire bowl which comes with a neat little wooden spoon to help you spoon up the broth and final bits near the bottom of the bowl. The cocktail was nothing to write home about though - it was a bit on the bland side in my opinion and not something I would get again. But 5 stars for the food, definitely a great place to come to when you're in Japantown.

Yelp
They were very nice to seat us close to closing time. And the ramen came out very quickly! The portions are large so I had enough for a second meal. They are known for their mentai cream udon and it was very interesting. Almost pasta like. Other than that udon, the tonkatsu also had a great broth and toppings.

Yelp
Located on the the 2nd floor of Kinokuniya building. There wasn't a wait on a Friday afternoon at 4:30 pm. I got the tempura curry udon that comes with 3 shrimp and assorted veggies. I liked that it came with a side of rice that you can use for eating with the leftover curry. The curry was mild but was thick/flavorful. The restaurant is small, only about 13 tables. The service was slow at first to take orders but got better after ordering.

Yelp
Ordered the creamy mentaiko udon, and it was so delicious. Service was prompt and fast! I think this is definitely my go to udon spot in the city!

Yelp
This is one of the few udon places where not only are the noodles cooked to al dente perfection, but the broth is good enough to drink! I recall only one udon place where this is true, and it was at . . . Oh! Of course, it was at Udon Mugizo in Saratoga! (I am delighted that the quality and deliciousness is consistent between the two udon restaurants. Excellent quality of food and service! Highly recommended!

Yelp
pro tip: Join yelp waitlist online while you shop so you're not sitting around starving food is great, you can see them making udon fresh sometimes. I love the signature dishes as it is so good and you won't find this flavor pallet elsewhere!! on weekends it can get busy so be wary of wait times. service is great and fast. you'll be in and out within 30-45 minutes (unless you're a slow eat but food is too good)

Yelp
I finally got to check this place out on a weekend afternoon and I'd definitely recommend getting on the waitlist ahead of time. It was very busy, I think I waited about 30-40 minutes at around 3pm. I got the tonkotsu deluxe which had tempura, greens, 2 kinds of pork, and an egg. Overall, it wasn't bad but there were a few misses -- the udon was slightly overcooked and the broth was a little salty.

Yelp
First off - Japan Center as a whole is super cozy - this spot was perfect and local recommended (my neighbors no less!) and kid friendly. Huge portions and amazing soupy goodness - I have no idea what was in my udon and didn't care - it was divine and warming on such an overcast day. My friends ordered these tempura offerings - gyoza tempura needs to be normalized for certain. The batter might have been a bit too much on the mushrooms but the shrimp tempura in my udon was perfect so maybe it was just the mushroom structure and how the batter adhered to it. Thanks to my friends for teaching me how to properly use the ladles and chopsticks so I didn't look like such a newbie! Now we just need an outpost here in CT

Yelp
This is the only place I've seen that has cream sauce udon! One slurp of those silky homemade udon noodles and I knew why there was a 40+ minute wait at Udon Mugizo on a Saturday night. They do have a Yelp waitlist that you can get on prior to your arrival, but the time estimates they give you don't seem that accurate. Ended up getting the large size udon since our server said it's 50% bigger and only a few bucks more. That didn't leave room for trying anything else on the menu, which even includes cold and Nabeyaki udons, but I'll be penciling in Udon Mugizo as one of my Japantown picks from now on!

Yelp
Got the Niku Bukakke Udon and it had quite a bit of volume! Very tasty and loved it, but honestly if I got it again I'd add an add-on or two for a different protein as I felt every bite was the same taste over and over. I DO RECOMMEND ordering tea though, as it comes with a full kettle for ONLY $3. My friend and I enjoyed the value of the tea very much.

Yelp
Expensive but good udon. Japantown is chock full of restaurants. Some are meh and expensive and some are decent and expensive. Udon Mugizo is the latter. $25 f or the mentai cream udon is a bit over the top. Though it does come with a lot of toppings. Gyoza is deep fried and pretty yummy.

Yelp
Udon Mugizo is a solid spot for a comforting bowl of udon, conveniently located inside Japantown Mall. The parking garage makes it an easy stop, and for lunch, I was seated right away and received my food within 10 minutes of ordering. I got the eggplant tempura and a large Niku udon. The eggplant tempura was excellent--crispy and crunchy on the outside, with soft, fresh eggplant inside. I really liked how they cut it into easy-to-dip pieces. The Niku udon had a lot of great elements. The broth was fantastic--rich yet clean--with a generous amount of fresh green scallions that added a refreshing touch. The softly poached egg mixed with the tempura flakes created a creamy texture, making the broth even better. The thinly sliced fatty beef and cooked onions made the dish more savory, though I wasn't a fan of the fish cakes, which were rubbery and uninspiring. The biggest letdown was the udon itself. This batch was overcooked--mushy, lacking chew, and breaking apart too easily. I basically had to eat it like a soup with the wooden spoon it came with. For the price, you'd expect a highly executed udon experience, but it ended up being just standard. Service was attentive throughout, almost too much so. I appreciated the staff being on top of things, but at times, it felt like they were little hawks watching from behind the shutters, which made the experience a bit intense. Overall, a great spot for udon with fast service and a convenient location, but consistency in noodle texture and a slightly more relaxed atmosphere would make a big difference.
