The Best Restaurants In Tokyo

"Yamacho is a great udon spot ideal for a casual afternoon meal. It’s a nice place to hang, with jazz playing almost constantly in the background. It’s known for tempura udon and a duck udon, which is our favorite thing here. Depending on the weather outside, get your noodles in a hot bowl of soup or cold served with dipping sauce." - josh layne

Google
I had a very good experience. the tempura and the ingredients used are high quality and the udon are amazing too. Due to its success, expect to wait in the line outside. The waiting time is acceptable even on weekends and your order is taken while you are in the queue.

Find this place by accident and left impressed. I had tempura udon and it was SUPERB. Tempura was cooked perfectly and my boyfriend had beef udon and the soup was so tasty.

Good food, the wagyu udon bowl was so flavorful and savory. Ice cream with candied nuts was also crunchy, sweet and refreshing. I got there without a rez and had to wait a bit for an open table but to be honest I tried to make one but wasn’t sure how to make one for them. Waitress were friendly and the layout is very nice and cozy. Would def come back and with a rez next time lol

Google
Cozy udon restaurant tucked in an alleyway. We queued for 30 minutes. We ordered the set menu for ¥3500 - 4 small appetisers, 2 small side dishes, udon noodle with tempura. Food presentation was great, the atmosphere was dim and cozy. Udon noodle was slightly undercooked. Tempura was crispy battered and great. There was a long waiting time in between dishes were served and it took us 2 hours to finish the meal. Price are on the mid-higher range and quite average food quality.

Google
We arrived right before opening time, and there was an queue around 30-minutes long. I had the tempura udon set which was tasty. It came with appetisers and three pieces of tempura. Service was polite, yet pushy to leave when we finished our meal. We basically spent just as long on the queue as in the restaurant. ¥2,000 was just an OK price for tempura, I think. Overall, OK every for now and then.

Google
Best Udon I've had in my life. We got the lunch special and it didn't disappoint. Barely any waiting time at peak lunch hour.

Google
The tempura & udon set is very tasty. Since their tempura is freshly made after they take your order when you are queuing outside for a table. Please expect the line up is going to be 30 mins or more after they open.

Joined the line about 11:42, was maybe the 12th person. The line more than doubled after that, so not everyone got in at opening. They take your order in line, so food comes out fast once you get in. There are two 2000 yen sets and a 3000 yen course. The difference is hard to tell from the menu, but basically with the course you get more appetizers. However, you get the best appetizers in the sets anyway, and the course doesn't get the big shrimp tempura. Not sure why the course is 1000 yen more, and would recommend one of the 2000 yen sets. Everything was good, especially the sashimi you get with the appetizers. Ironically, the actual udon was probably the weakest dish, so if you're just after udon you might look elsewhere. Very busy, so not suited for getting comfortable and chatting for a long time.

Yelp
Another locals only establishment. Zero English. Thank goodness for google translate! Everyone was ordering this huge lunch set but we decided to go against the popular choice and ordered our own bowls instead. No regrets. Your choice of thick or thin (not that thin but thinner than regular udon). Crazy efficient service. A constant buzz in the restaurant. Love this place!

Yelp
I don't know about you, but I hate waiting in line to eat. This place made me wait in a long line. I am still giving it five stars. That's how good the ramen is. These noodles are worth even a two hour wait. Make the time for this. No other udon I have had has come close.

Yelp
So tasty! Loved the udon. Was a great find for me and my wife and 8 year old son. Service was kind and attentive. Food was delicious. We didn't get the set menu and it looked like quite a feast.

Yelp
Yes, they have an English menu and yes, you should get the duck udon . It's exactly what you want from udon... hot, flavorful, beautiful presentation, and the duck itself was really tasty. I do wish it could be prepared spicy, but that's just because I love spice. Ambiance - Small and intimate. There's one long communal table in the middle surrounded by a handful of 2 to 4 seaters. Quiet, relaxing vibes. Credit cards - yes :)

Yelp
A great place to grab Japanese-style, udon noodles where locals will frequent but is friendly toward foreigners. While it isn't completely white-washed with high jacked-up prices and jaded staff, be aware that the English menu they provide does not have all of their menu items translated, so if you're completely dependent on it, you may miss out on some tasty dishes. But don't be turned off by that, just ask for a Japanese menu as well, and see if you can decode the items for yourself. All that being said! The food was great; as a noodle-lover, their udon wasn't so thick that you feel full after just three strands, but the dishes make for a hearty meal, even if you order the cold dipping style. They also feature a soymilk broth/dipping sauce that is quite unique. I personally had the hot soymilk broth udon with charred chicken (which isn't on the English menu) and it was great. The dish was light but comforting, and every ingredient added to the bowl was distinct, but surprisingly went well together; from the light soymilk broth, to the charring of the chicken, even the yuzu zest that was used to garnish the dish made a presence on your pallet. The cold dipping udon also made for a great order. While the noodles are dense and filling, the nature of which you eat the dish makes it almost too easy to slurp down, especially on a hot summer's day. When the order came, my friend and I were actually surprised at the large volume! The restaurant is great for those who want to experience authentic culture through food, but who may not be so adventurous as to try something completely alien to their diet (like raw chicken for example). I would definitely recommend the place, and look forward to coming back again!

Yelp
Such a cool hidden place! We came here at 6pm on a Friday and it was empty - which was perfect since we have a 1yo baby. They were very welcoming and helpful, and had an English menu. The food was good - seemed clean and high quality. The best part is the beautiful atmosphere. You feel like you're in a modern Japanese hideout. And the prices were great!

Yelp
I had the beef curry udon and it was so delicious! The curry flavor and spices were on point, the noodles were perfectly cooked with just the right amount of chewiness, eggs cooked to perfection and the beef was incredibly tender and juicy.

Yelp
Always a line here at lunch, so be sure to budget some time to wait. Dinner doesn't get as crowded, so you won't have to wait unless you come after 6:30/7PM. I'm a fan of the kamo (duck) udon noodle soup. The tamago is also a good appetizer. If you're new to udon, they have the following general choices here: - udon noodles in hot soup or cold noodles you dip in a thick broth/sauce - thick or thin udon noodles (I suggest thick)

Yelp
This is THE Udon place in the Ebisu area I strongly recommend. It's close from the station but located in a quiet street. Their Udon is high quality (a variety of flavors and toppings are available) and reasonably priced. It's not a huge place but is a cozy, clean place that has a good traditional Japanese atmosphere to it. This is a good place not just for Japanese people who grew up eating Udon but for non-Japanese residents/visitors who have never had Udon before. Or those who generally like noodles but not particularly Udon. I'd suggest you try this place and see if Udon is something you'd like to put on your "my favorite Japanese food" list and keep eating going forward ;) I personally like their Udon a lot and it's not easy to find Udon with this quality at this pricing.

Yelp
As a Kansai-origin man, I basically don't eat Udon in Tokyo. But Yamacho is a very rare exception. I was surprised at the quality of their Udon at this price range. 関西人の僕も納得のうどん.

Yelp
Best udon I've ever eaten. In my experience, the most memorable foods I've had in Japan were never at the event places, but at small places I stumble upon where I order food that I think is so simple that I think to myself "how much better can it be than the stuff I have in USA?" I've had udon a gazillion times in America. The duck bowl I had here was on a completely differently level. Better in that way I associate with Japan, where the dish seems both more complex and simple at the same time. Maybe less ingredients, but each component, in this case especially the broth and noodles, were at a much higher level. Fresher, silkier, cleaner yet fattier. It's hard to explain. The udon noodles I'm used to in LA is relatively flavorless, I just hope for a pleasing texture. The noodles here had flavor. It was a subtle nutty, grainy flavor.

Yelp
Excellent and consistent food. English menu available and staff are helpful. Charming and contemporary interior. A bit tucked away in a small park but well worth the effort to locate it.

Yelp
Big fan since their opening! Their firm yet silky and tender noodles are one of the best I've ever had. Basic kake or kitsune udon is my kids favorite and I like their summer special cold udon. It's a little hard to find located at the end of a small dead end alley next to a park.

Yelp
Amazing udon with extremely flavorful broth and toppings. The duck udon was unbelievably good and I would get it again. English menu was available and staff was friendly and helpful.

Yelp
Loved this place! Udon was really tasty. I got the tempura and mushrooms and my husband got the duck and they were both delicious. Food is served in what looked like old style Japanese dishes with a wooden spoon and clay bowls, decoration inside is minimalist and cozy. Small place hidden at the end of an alley but what a wonderful surprise. The waitress was nice and polite making a real effort to speak English (making us feel less language ignorants) and the price was quite affordable for dinner in Tokyo.
