What to Eat in Maryland’s Booming Koreatown  | Eater DC

"Owner and chef Sung Un Yoo and sister opened their own fast-casual Korean spot in 2024 after spending many years working at the family’s other restaurant Kim Bop Na Ra (see below). In addition to making its own kimbab rice rolls – a seaweed roll with a variety of different fillings including the popular kimchi and anchovy – they also serve tempura, rice balls and Tteokbokki, a Korean style spicy rice cake with fishcakes and vegetables. The combo menu is a great option here because it allows you to mix and match to try each of the delicacies. Still hungry? There are also dumplings, spicy ramen, rice bowls, and fun noodle options like Mul Naengmyeon, a Korean icy cold noodle specialty. 10045 Baltimore National Pike" - Claudia Rosenbaum

I visited this place for the first time with my daughter and really enjoyed our experience. The service was warm and friendly, our waitress Lilly was delightful. The food was good, fast, and well portioned. To keep it simple, it was a fun experience, and I highly recommend this place. I will be coming back often now. I got the Ramen, we also had the fried dumplings, and my daughter enjoyed the kimchi stew.

This place was amazing🤯🫶very helpful in explaining the menu. 🤖 delivery is soo cool. The brought out some sodas for the kids for free and portions were huge💯💯💥 7 of us ate for under 100 bucks. They do have black bean paste noodles without pork. I had potato pancakes and dumplings soup. I hope to eat there again my next visit.

Google
so thus far I must say every Asian restaurant i have tried in Ellicott City has been very good. Ugane is my latest and I was quite happy with my meal. this was my first time trying a rice ball we had the crab one. I could have just ate this very fulfilling. rice cooked well seasoned well. it reminded me of eating a giant Kimbap. I would come back to this restaurant just to try the other rice balls. we alson had the fried dumplings because I like fried dumplings but these were juicy not over battered not greasy allowing the filling taste to shine. I had for my main dish Dakgangieong which is a deep fried boneless chicken glazed with sweet and spicy sauce. again nicely battered reminded me of sesame chicken but not as sweet and I didnt really get the spiciness of the sauce but that was ok because im not big on spicy foods. very good dish. my friend had a rice bowl i cant remember the exact name of the dish but believe it was the Dolsat dish. it came in a hot bowl and a sauce he had to add. he said by itself the dish needed more seasoning the sauce added a little spice but he needed a stronger kick. but still thought the dish has tender meat and fresh.

Absolutely DELICIOUS! Employees are super kind and helpful, and the food is just amazing. Price is also very good. I recommend their rice balls and kimbap!

If I could get 6 stars I would! First time trying Korean food and I’m so glad we came to this restaurant. The woman and man working were so nice, very sweet and gave great service. When they get busy they even have a robot that can bring your food or check to you! Was neat. Restaurant itself is super clean. All food seems made to order. Chicken Katsu had the perfect crunch and the curry like sauce that came on the side was excellent. The banchan little dishes that came with the meal, like pickled cabbage, were soooo tasty. With most of the dishes you also get a shredded cabbage salad with a cucumber on top, with yum yum sauce dressing. Loved it as an accompaniment. Every dish we got was perfect. Thank you to the restaurant! Will be back next time we are in town.

Great Korean streetfood place. Remember those K-Drama shows we watched. Remember those delicious foods they show, and how the K-Drama actors eat it so deliciously. Yes they have those type Of food. Things you always crave for since seeing it in your favorite K-Drama or Variety show. Maybe it’s just me. Anyway, We are starting strong with the portion sizes. You get free banchan as well. Banchan (side dishes) We ordered a lot of food. Since two families my family and my brother’s family. We ordered, Rice balls- anchovy - only for people with good spice tolerance. Tuna- very good according to my brother. Dakganjeong - Fried Chicken with sweet and spicy sauce. So delicious full of flavor. Tonkatsu- huge portion. Very crunchy! You dip it in a tonkatsu dipping sauce. It comes with a side of rice. Tteokbokki + Veggie Rice ball and Fish cake soup combo- $23.99 a bit steeper than the other entrees but its 3 different things. The fish cake soup hands down my all time favorite. I’m a simple being. I love how clean the taste is. Delicious, simple and oh so good especially during winter time. Jjajangmyeon with Rice- my brother had this and he finished everything so that means its good. My niece had udon noodles and she finished all noodles and no complaints there. She loved every bit of it. Rice bowl with veggies- im not sure what my sister inlaw ordered it looks like bibimbap without the gochuchang sauce. There was a soy bean sauce on the side they gave. The servers and Ladies were very friendly and welcoming. They greet you so nicely when you come in. It was such a pleasant experience that i would like to back again for another taste of their other foods on the menu.

Google
Great food and service!! The price is on point too. The songs were a blast from the past, but that’s typical these days. We ordered the day special which included tteokbokki, 2 rice ball, and fish cake soup; also ordered potato pancake, ddeok kochi, fried kimchi dumpling, gimmal-I, and of course they provided some side dishes which included: kimchi, pickled radish slaw, pickled radish, pickled jalapeños, pickled onions, and a sweet rice cracker. Everything was excellent except for the potato pancake, it was a little too heavy for me with the cheese and the potato was a little too oily and not crispy enough. Also the kimchi dumpling had meat in them which we were not expecting (we have a vegetarian in the group) so be aware. The vegetarian rice balls were seasoned to perfection! Overall great place to stop and grab a bite!

Comfort food! They have menu sets for a good price. Mini tonkatsus were delicious!

Yelp
Just discovered this little Korean eatery in Ellicott City, and it was a pleasant surprise! Service was excellent--both attendants were friendly and welcoming. The ambiance was clean and inviting. The menu isn't overwhelming, which makes ordering easy, and the prices are quite reasonable, especially these days. We ordered the Chicken Noodle Kalguksu, Dakgangjeong, and a rice ball--everything was perfect! The flavors were spot on--not too salty, not greasy--and we left feeling satisfied without any guilt. We're giving it 4 stars only because we're big protein eaters. The meat portions are typical for Korean (non-Chinese) non-BBQ dishes, but a bit more protein would make it a solid 5-star experience.

Yelp
Cute establishment! Found this place by chance. Just decided I wanted kimbap & I'm so glad I did! They greeted me immediately as I walked and were very patient and attentive as I decided what to order. I ended up ordering the mini kimbap, Tteokbokki and several rice balls. EVERYTHING was really good! We opened the mini kimbap in the car so I got pictures. I forgot to get pictures of everything else. No worries, I'm definitely going back & will update my review.

Yelp
This place is one of my favorite Korean place to visit when I want bunsik style food. The staff are always friendly and attentive. The place is clean and spacious and good to come by with group of friends or family. I usually get the mul nangmyun during warm weather and will order tteokbokki and fried dumplings during cold weather with bunch of other items. None of the menu items I've ordered have disappointed me yet.

Yelp
Second time visiting Ugane and the food still never misses! Last time we got the ramen and udon, which were amazing, but this time we tried the rice ball and dolsot, both super good! Everything was fresh and flavorful, and the service was great as always. Definitely one of my go-to spots now. Can't wait to come back again!

Yelp
After doing some shopping at the shopping center across the street, I wanted something quick to eat so I decided to check out this place. I am familiar with some of the restaurants in this plaza so I was hopeful. I ordered the boneless chicken with the sweet and spicy sauce and a strawberry soda. Everything was delish and the service was very hospitable. I'll be back with my family soon.

Yelp
This spot is surrounded by many options to eat! We decided to check it out as and it didn't disappoint at all! The service was fast and on point. We ordered several dishes to go and still were great to eat at home. A couple of the dishes that stood out to me was the fried chicken bits. Not to much batter and fried with the perfect crisp and the flavor of sweet and spicy was a plus! The vegetable tempura had a nice crisp to each and the broth was tasty. One item to pass on would be the rice balls. It was a bit on the bland side and dry. Overall, I would definitely return as there so many more dishes to try!

Yelp
Great Korean food. Kimbap is best in the area. Way better than kimbopnara. Pricing is on point too, service is good. This is my go to Korean snack food in ellicott city

Yelp
Delicious Korean street food and soups and entrees. My daughter and I enjoyed lunch here. We were seated immediately and ordered several different things to try. The food came out surprisingly quickly. Everything was good. The beef rice balls were delicious. I enjoyed the Tteokbokki and my daughter enjoyed the Tonkatsu. It took a while to get our bill but the servers were literally running around the place. They were super busy. When our bill came they gave us a little yogurt drink as a dessert. Cute place and I will be back!

Yelp
(review was posted in September, but visit was done in August) I have been waiting for this place to open and was excited to try it out. The staff were very nice and ready for feedback as they were just opening. We ordered the kongguksu (soybean noodle cold soup), ddukboki with kimmalyi, and mandu guk. They gave as banchan and offered us the fried puffed rice covered in sugar as a lunch treat. Everything was tasty. The kongguksu was refreshing especially on a hot summer day. The restaurant is nestled in between Ben Gong Tea and the Honey Pig Karaoke place. There is ample parking, but spots close to the restaurant gets filled up quickly. I am ready to go back and try more items from their menu.

Yelp
Had another visit here recently, and it was a better experience than my previous times! My entire family enjoyed the dishes more this time, We got the bean sprout bi bim bap, bibim kuksu, and their jjajang bap and myun. All were delicious. The jajang really surprised me because it doesn't look like typical korean jjajang. It has much less black soy bean paste and is much drier and lighter. I don't mind this version and really enjoyed it (its great we have a restaurant with this different style). The other dishes were well executed too. We had the red bean bingsu for dessert to finish the meal. It was a very good experience. Inside is still spacious and clean, and service was a good.

Yelp
Great quality food and unique menu items! I saw this restaurant on IG and wanted to try it because they had kong guksu and other Korean snacking dishes (along with classic dishes). The lady who took my order was really friendly and my order was ready in 10 minutes. I got takeout and everything was packaged really nicely. I came by around dinner time and everything seemed clean and orderly. There were customers but it wasn't packed. I had seen kong guksu on social media and it looked sooo good. I tried making it at home but it wasn't very authentic, so I was excited when I saw it on this menu! It comes with a baggy of ice, a couple sides, and salt to add to taste. Don't be like me and accidentally add too much salt lol. The noodles were soft but not soggy. The soup/sauce has a soybean flavor that's pretty neutral, and the texture is sort of grainy. I really liked it with the kimchi to add additional flavor! The mini kimbap ($5.99) were really good! Tastes basically like a regular kimbap but it's a little easier to eat and it's less heavy on the rice. I'd definitely order this next time I come, I bet it'd be really good with tteokbokki. They have a happy hour in the morning it seems, if you want to get a cheap meal for lunch. It'd be great if they had jajangmyeon and were open later.

Yelp
Good selection of Korean cuisine, tried the beef Bibimbap, nice presentation, very tasty and reasonable. Service was excellent, very polite and helpful staff, spotless and comfortable interior.
google avatar

Shay H.

Yelp
Unfortunately, this place fell short of expectations. Korean food here is simple and bland. My stone bibimbap came with ground meat instead of sliced Bulgogi as it should be. I really don't have much to say other than it's just not that good. Service was great and it's a nice open space. Price is reasonable as well. Just food is not much to rave about.
google avatar

Puja P.

Yelp
I got the dolsot bibimbap (without beef) and my friend got the seafood kalguksu. I loved the dolsot bibimbap! They gave the sauce on the side so I was able to add enough to suit my spice level. It was super tasty, and just to my liking. My friend also thought the kalguksu was great. She appreciated the amount they gave and that it wasn't overly salty. The complimentary side dishes and soup were also great! At the end, they delivered our cheques with the robot, and gave us complimentary yakult drink too. The service was great and there was a lot of table seating in the restaurant. I wasn't overly packed or crowded during lunch time, but also had a good amount of customers. The prices were very reasonable as well! Our dishes were both $12.99 each (without tax and tip), and the amount we got was plentiful! I'll definitely be coming back again.

Yelp
Absolutely a pleasure to have cold noodles and mini KimBap on the third day of summer 2024 heat wave. Delicious and refreshing!

Yelp
Wanted to try yet another new Korean restaurant in the area. When leaving we saw a kiosk to order food but when we first walked in, they led us to a table like a typical restaurant. So unsure what's the norm. Menu had standard Korean food (except spicy tofu soups). We got kimbap mari, which is a fried seaweed roll with glass noodles inside. It didn't have much flavor and felt the grease going down as we took bites. The bibimbap was ok, except my mom noticed they added the rice after, and not cook with. My kalguksu was ok, I wish it had more squash and perhaps some carrots to make it visually appeasing. Overall, solid effort but we'd much rather go elsewhere for better flavor profile. I will say that the interior was very spacious and clean, and the service was great.

Yelp
Looking for Korean classics, check out Ugane! Ugane is owned by the same owners of Kim Bob Na Ra. Their food is delicious and service is always friendly and attentive. My go to item is the jjolmyeon, a cold spicy chewy noodle with vegetables. I like that they have a lot of cold noodle options which helps to combat the heat outside. The ambiance is nice and cozy with a good amount of seating in the restaurant. If you're already a fan of Kim Bob Na Ra, you should definitely check our Ugane as well!

Monika B.

Yelp
We came in for a few snacks and was pleasantly surprised. The menu has so many different options and they were delicious. The staff was super friendly and answered our questions. And the robot brought our food to our table. Yay!!! we will return.
google avatar

Scarlett H.

Yelp
The food here was so. good. I've been craving Korean street food and Ugane delivered! The service was great - they also have a robot, which was a lot of fun.
google avatar

Jae S.

Yelp
Alright. Probably a mistake trying to order gan jjajangmyun at this place but I saw it on the menu so I gave it a shot. What I got was not jjajangmyun. The noodles were anorexically thin, overcooked rice noodles (gooksu noodles), not the typical JJM noodles. I also did not like the addition of bell peppers in the sauce as it is not typically in JJM. Just stick to copious amounts of onions and pork. The shallow bowl it got served in was also not great for mixing the sauce with the noodles. I'd give it a 2 out of 10.
google avatar

Kimberly K.

Yelp
Found them on DoorDash and decided to give them a try. The food was just okay. The tteokbokki sauce tasted like canned tomato sauce which was off putting. The kimchi fried rice could have had more kimchi in it. Might give them another try, but prefer other Korean spots in the area.
google avatar

Kimberly P.

Yelp
Good food, great service- the server is very kind and personable. The ambiance is good for families and easily accessible. Good lighting and decor is cute.

Yelp
This was a surprise for us. Their food is a knock-out! Absolutely delicious. Everything was clean and the service was prompt and friendly. We had an excellent experience. We ordered bibimbop, ramen, bulgogi, chicken katsu, shrimp tempura and kani onigiri.

W H.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious food - one of the best Korean comfort food places in the area!! Also fantastic service..! Also easy dining- good for families with kids, too!! Definitely coming back!
google avatar

Terry G.

Yelp
We enjoyed this place very much! Had some Korean street food items and just kinda felt like home...love that you can add different things to your tteokbokki. Service was good the guy was quick and explained how some items are and he just was amazing. Would definitely recommend!

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place after finding out that it's associated with Kimbap Nara. However, the service wasn't the greatest and the food was just okay. We had just put in our order with one server when another one came by and asked if we wanted a water refill and our check. I was seriously confused. It seemed that the servers were sharing tables and their communication with each other was obviously non-existent. We also asked for an extra pair of chopsticks throughout our meal THREE times which we never ended up getting and decided to just forget about it. We received our food and the jjolmyeon was very basic. The vegetables in it were mainly cabbage, with a small amount of cucumbers and radish. The gochujang was also pretty bland. My friend ordered the dduk mandoo guk which she also said was bland. We also ordered the tuna rice balls and the menu stated that it comes as 4 pieces but we only received 2. We asked a server about it and they said it typically comes as 2 but they'll give us 4 as if it was a favor to us ... They should really consider fixing their menu then. The tuna rice balls were probably the best dish we had while there, though. The pros are that they are more reasonably priced compared to other Korean restaurants in the area and the interior was spacious and clean. I'm not sure if I'd come back here any time soon given our experience but may give it another try one day because we really like Kimbap Nara. Maybe this restaurant is still working things out and will hopefully catch up!

Yelp
10/10. Please do yourself a soild favor and check this restaurant out. The service is great. The food is great. The restaurant is bright and clean. All around it's my go to Korean restaurant. I even went twice in one week. So far it's been my fourth time and the owner remembers you. She is the sweetest. I been checking out there menu and there new menu items. Everything is fresh. I got cold noodles twice and so far it's been the best all around EC. I hope this business starts getting more foot traffic. It use to be "best pho" in EC.

Nick P.

Yelp
Hours (as of Aug 31,2024): Open Daily 10Am-8Pm, Closed Wednesdays. Great food, great prices. Got the tteokbokki (Korean style spicy rice cakes with fishcakes & vegetables) with Beef Sausage. Similar to the ones I tried in South Korea. Fairly spicy, Large portion, could be split by 2 people or eaten alone. Got Jumeokbap (2 Rice Balls) filled with Tuna & Jalepeno with nori flakes on top. Good side dish, or by itself, wasn't spicy. Chill ambiance, there was two tvs with different Kpop videos playing. The staff were attentive and kind. Will be going again. Already recommended to others.

Yelp
Such amazing Korean street style food. Service and taste was a 10/10! Would highly recommend the vegetable rice balls and spicy pork stir fry!

Yelp
Loved the service! This place is super comforting and an excellent place to have dinner with your family. There are many yummy options to choose from so that for sure adds to the expirence.

Yelp
I love this place! Ugane offers a very neat and welcoming environment. I really appreciate being able to try a variety of Korean foods here at such a reasonable price. The owner and staff are incredibly welcoming and go out of their way to explain everything about their dishes. Of course, the food is absolutely delicious. You definitely need to go!

Yelp
The food was good. Prices reasonable. The people are friendly and pleasant. Service is very good. Bright atmosphere. The restaurant used to be Best Pho 59. I was surprised they closed it.
