Uji Time Dessert Opens in the SF Metreon for Soft-Serve in Fish-Shaped Cones - Eater SF

"Uji Time Dessert, known in Berkeley, the Japantown mall, and on Instagram for its signature taiyaki cones, officially opened in the Metreon (135 4th Street) on Sunday, located on the first floor of the complex, near Sanraku. Uji Time, whose name refers to a city on the outskirts of Kyoto, first opened in Berkeley in 2016. The sweets shop takes fresh-baked taiyaki — traditional Japanese fish-shaped cakes typically stuffed with fillings like red bean paste — and stuffs them with soft serve, treating them like cones. Flavors include black sesame, tofu, and rich, dark green matcha. Uji Time expanded to Japantown in 2017, and these days, the company is on an expansion kick. New locations include San Mateo, Newark, Los Angeles, Pleasanton, and now SoMa. According to a representative at the Japantown Uji Time location, the new Metreon store is on the smaller side, with just small taiyaki cones available at the moment, rather than large. Current flavor choices are matcha, sesame, tofu, and a seasonal special flavor, lavender honey. If Instagram is any indication — and it is — the latest location is already tempting soft-serve lovers. Hours are Sunday to Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m." - Caleb Pershan

October 2024: I've been meaning to visit this store and was excited to see that Ice cream was brought in to work. Got to try a cup of Strawberry 🍓 rose. Ice cream was nice and fluffy. Flavor profile was sweet with just a hint of rose 🌹. Overall, was very pleased with the ice cream. Would definitely go visit this store to try other flavors. But if strawberry 🍓 rose was the only flavor available, I would get it in a heartbeat!

First time trying this brand and style of ice cream and it's delicious. I had the Ube ice cream (sort of an earthy vanilly) with honey and rice pearls, in a soft waffle cone packed with sweet red bean paste. It was large, filling and delicious. Great staff, fast service, reasonable price.

Stopped by for an ube ice cream after lunch inside the Metreon mall - I'm so glad that I went for the upside down tayaki fish waffle in a cup, because the ice cream melted quickly! I went for the red bean filling and added Oreo crumbles plus marshmallow crunch toppings. Delicious, I'll be back for this one 💜

Skip the waffle cones! They are not fresh and they are out of a box! Go for the fish cone! I prefer black sesame soft ice cream with red bean filling. I have seen people getting half matcha half black sesame! The cone taste fantastic but it will melt quickly so you need to hurry up eating it or it might drip on your clothes

Staff was super nice and helpful since I was lost on what to order! I got ube ice cream in a tayaki cone with red bean, poppy seeds and crunchy marshmallows. The dessert was veryyyy light and I felt like I hadn't eaten anything at all after finishing it. 100/10 will be going again later today haha

We ordered 2 soft serves. The cashier said only 1 stamp per order while the point card said 1 soft serve per order. The ice cream is fine. The strawberry roll is soggy.

Please hear me out, stick with the matcha one. It's simply the best flavor. Banana milk is definitely not for me, and black sesame was not that great after all. The crispy rice flakes are not great either, I wish they have mochi. Customer service was okay, the staff were not happy but they were helpful enough.

I love that this location is closer to me than the others. Makes it easier to enjoy a sweet treat on the way back from getting groceries. The matcha and sesame swirl was very good. The sesame flavor could have been a bit more prominent. The matcha flavor was on point. The red bean in the taiyaki is great. The taiyaki itself could have been a bit more fresh. I understand they make them in batches, but letting them sit for quite a while is not ideal either. Overall, it is worth repeat visits.
