The Best Coffee Shops For Getting Work Done in Philly - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"Ultimo Coffee has three locations in Philly, and all are casual and comfortable inside—so much so that you won’t think twice about dragging a bunch of tables and chairs around to feng shui the room for your ideal working environment. Plus, the one in Newbold has a whole wall filled with beer refrigerators, just in case the coffee isn’t cutting it after you get a surge of emails after 4pm on a Friday. Outside of the coffee menu, they also have things like cardamom sugar buns and blueberry ricotta cake. Not to mention that when you bring your own mug, you get a discount on your coffee—which you’ll probably put back into buying more coffee if you’re here long enough." - Candis Mclean, Alison Kessler

Ultimo Coffee Bar Review - South Philly - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"Ultimo Coffee, which has three locations in Philly, is in the camp of “trendy coffee shops.” It’s not elitist or snobby, and it’s actually casual and comfortable inside. Plus, this one in Newbold has a whole wall filled with beer refrigerators, just in case the coffee isn’t cutting it. Maybe switching from caffeine to alcohol will give you the kick you need to keep writing that novel or even just a few emails." - Sydney McElwee

Google
Had a lovely morning working at this coffee shop. The outdoor area was cute and gave us the space we needed to work. The drinks were good, but the WiFi could have been stronger. Overall a lovely little spot

Google
Nice space to hangout. There's outdoor seating too. The baked goods are tasty, I tried the raspberry oat bar and bought a lemon bar. Nice selection of pastries too.

Google
My favorite coffee shop. 4 stars instead of 5 because the staff voted to not unionize alongside their other locations. Other than that, the staff is super friendly and way less pretentious than most coffee shops. Great place to go solo, work, or meet a friend.

Landon Rother

Google
The coffee was great but the music was very loud, and the barista was slamming everything very loudly. Slamming doors, ice machine, cups, etc. It was a very overstimulating coffee shop environment

Jessica McA

Google
Lovely corner coffee shop with indoor and outdoor seating. Friendly and knowledgeable staff that are happy to chat. Had an iced coffee and the hibiscus tea, both were perfectly brewed. Ordered a simple black coffee for my friend and they made an individual pour over for him. Best lemon square that I've had in years, the lemon curd had a perfect sweet-tart pop that was off set by the buttery crust. Very reasonable prices and a great location to meet up with others.

Google
The staff at all locations is amazing but the owners treat their workers terribly. Also the decor is like an Apple Store- lacks warmth or personality. Very landlord vibes.

Google
Beautiful corner coffee shop with decent out side seating. Has great iced coffee and some tasty snacks.

Google
Fine balanced espresso. They have Oatly Barista 😊 and a variety of vegan cakes as well. The baristas are super friendly and professional. I also like the interiour over here: modern, clean and cosy.

Yelp
Ultimo for the win! I usually come to Ultimo when I'm in the area visiting friends and get some hot cocoa and banana bread. Their banana bread is dense and tasty just how I like it. Today I woke up feeling dangerous and got their iced coffee which a friend of mine says it's the best. I was thinking. "ok, buddy...all iced coffee pretty much taste the same." Boy, was I wrong! The iced coffee had really strong nodes of an Ethiopian blend with a hint of vanilla. I'm not 100% sure if this wasn't Ethiopian blend, but my coffee tastes buds give these vibes. It was nice just to be sitting outside and enjoying some early afternoon convo with friends over some good iced coffee

Yelp
Very tasty iced coffees. They have this fruity coffee right now called summer punch. It's so delicious, I'm addicted.
google avatar

Yelp
My first time here. Enjoyed my hot chai with my mom. Friendly people. Inviting atmosphere.
google avatar

Yelp
Really good coffee and amazing pastries! I loved the zucchini bread and lemon poppy seed. Other friends raved about the raspberry and peanut butter gluten free pastry. Really cute neighborhood coffee shop.

Clarissa B.

Yelp
Lazy staff! During fall they offer pumpkin flavor. I got a chai and added pumpkin into in twice that week. I go back order the same thing and the SAME guy tells me that can't be done. I should have just stuck to Rival Bros

Yelp
Always love Ultimo. I'm there often and they are always great. Clean and super friendly environment.

Yelp
Ultimo has great lattes, unique coffees and friendly service. They have free wifi and a restroom and its a good place to sit and do work for a bit. they have nice outdoor seating as well. For gf snacks, they have a gluten free chia seed pudding with blueberries and nut butter that is delicious; they usually also have a orange polenta cake that is gluten free and or a peanut butter cookie that is gf.

Yelp
Cute little coffee shop with pastries. I got a vanilla iced latte, I enjoyed the coffee, it was sweet and strong. I only wish they gave me more ice and that there were straws. The croissant was good. I came around noon so they ran out of regular croissants, but one of the workers there recommended the croissant with different kind of spice in the middle. Croissant was fluffy and crispy, but I was not a big fan of the middle part. The spice were very strong and I wasn't really in the mood for strong spices. A big plus about this place is that they have seatings. There's indoor and outdoor seating. Good space to do some work or read a book while sipping your coffee.

Noelle Z.

Yelp
I don't get to drink coffee often, so I asked my partner where we could get the best latte. oh my gosh the vanilla oat latte was phenomena. they were super busy but handling orders so well. will definitely be back, I'd like to give the Mocha latte a try next.
google avatar

Nicki L.

Yelp
Cute, clean, simplistic cafe. Their iced teas are incredible! I got a hibiscus berry tea with simple syrup. Subtly sweet and floral. They have several seating options inside and outside on the sprawling sidewalk. Perfect stop if you're in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is the worst! They were rude and unfriendly! The floors were dirty and the cappuccino wasn't worth it at all!
google avatar

Zechariah T.

Yelp
This coffee shop has a cute atmosphere with friendly service that is ideal for solo studying or work. The vanilla latte is one of the best lattes I've had in the city since living here for 6 years. The baked goods are nothing special, yet nothing to complain about. It can get cold, so bring layers. Headphones are also a must since the music can be on the louder side (ABBA was on repeat for two hours) and the coffee grinder was ungodly loud. Will certainly come again to study.

Jennifer T.

Yelp
My partner has come in here every day for a year, and he tips well. No one has bothered to remember his face, much less his order. If you want to be acknowledged as a human, go elsewhere.
google avatar

Ronnakrit R.

Yelp
Their coffee is exceptional. I get my morning coffee here almost everyday for the last year. Their Imperial blend is perfect for my Moka pot. I can't wait for their German Apple cake this Fall. However, the down side is on their other cakes. I tried the Thai tea cake and Citrus cake and I have to say that they are SuperDry -- they should buy off the name of that clothes brand if they decide to continue baking these dry cakes.
google avatar

Yelp
One of my top 5 favorite places to get coffee in Philadelphia. One complaint: they're always out of chocolate croissants! The coffee is strong and whatever milk they use for their drinks, it is delicious and addictive.

Yelp
Passed by this place accidentally as I was driving down to Passyunk and decided to check it out. Theres lots of free street parking as its in a residential area. What I love about this place is the giant open window that they pull up during the summer, so its an open concept. Additionally theres an outdoor seating area too. I came here on a weekend and there wasn't an issue getting a spot. Its also super interesting that they sell beer (in 6 packs) as well as draft beer. Besides the 3 tables in front of the window the rest of the tables in the back were too dim lit.
google avatar

Ryan K.

Yelp
Good spot for getting work done in Philly. There is plenty of potential street parking nearby if you are willing to look around for a few minutes and potentially walk a half mile or so. Ultimo is not the most artsy coffee shop with solid white walls and white chairs to match. The coffee is decent however and the internet connection was stable over the two hours I lingered at Ultimo over a Monday afternoon. I would recommend Ultimo Coffee for what it is.

Yelp
Great community coffee shop. Staff kind and efficient, place very clean with welcoming vibe. Would highly recommend

Yelp
I really like coming here since I feel like I'm supporting a local business! The drip coffee is great, but I hate ordering here since most of the baristas are judge-y that I don't know the difference between different coffees. Just get me a house blend and I'm thrilled. I also tried out the chai recently and I was overwhelmed by cloves. The only thing I could taste were cloves and I had to chuck the drink. It's very bright with all the windows and a nice place to study, but just know what you want to order before you get to the register.

Yelp
Great neighborhood coffee shop, yummy pastry, good service. Clean, neat and a very inviting place.

Yelp
The only coffee spot like it in the immediate neighborhood. Went almost every morning of our Philly vaca. Really enjoyed my almond milk cafe au lait. Didn't love the iced tea because it had strong floral notes, but that might be my unsophisticated palate. The sugar donut and zucchini bread were delicious. The croissant and cranberry orange cake and tahini chocolate chip cookie were pretty good. Loved their COVID setup with the ordering window. Nice seating options right outside. Seems like they have many neighborhood regulars. I'd become one if I lived nearby!

Elle C.

Yelp
Consistently a great vibe and high-quality coffee - I always make sure to stop by when I'm in Philly. I've tried their cappuccino, latte, iced coffee and all have been equally delicious. Clean and modern interior, nice staff, and more seating than the Rittenhouse Square location. We got a brownie this last time, which was decadent and moist but I must say, the Earl Grey loaf left me wanting. Overall, just a great coffee shop.

Yelp
First time visit Very friendly staff Tried vanilla coffee Outdoor/indoor tables Quiet Highly recommend

Yelp
Best espresso in Philly if you prefer more citrus notes (ever wonder what's all the hype about la colombe?--this is your spot). This Catharine St location is my personal fav, but they're all superb. Lovely staff, good tunes, good pastries and cookies. Solid place that brings such joy to my life.

Yelp
I love Ultimo Coffee! Such a great place to do work and enjoy a beautiful day while sitting outside the cafe. Best iced coffee I've ever had!
google avatar

Danielle Z.

Yelp
Great spot for quiet enjoyment, chatting, or studying. Really calm and peaceful decor, and outside seating to catch some fresh air as you enjoy some pastries and drinks (or ice cream!) Chai latte cannot be beat, it's the best one I've had. Subtly sweet, but spice enough that it hits the back of your throat and you can really taste strong, natural, chai flavor. Nothing artificial about it like a Starbucks or similar chai has. Iced coffee is also good! Drinks come in glasses/mug depending on temperature and no straws (unless you grab one from the sugar station). Bonus points for loving Mother Earth!
google avatar

Kate U.

Yelp
LOVE this coffee. Although the staff doesn't abide by asking for "just one pump of vanilla." My boyfriend and I don't like our coffees super sweet and multiple times when we have asked for a small dash of mocha or vanilla, we see an inches worth at the bottom of our iced coffee. We have been getting more black coffees as of lately but nonetheless, we love the vibe and the staff is super sweet. We will be back.

Yelp
Great little coffee shop in Graduate Hospital neighborhood. It's fairly quiet and room to work at tables inside. There are also some tables outside. There is some street parking out front if you can get a spot. The staff is very nice and they make your drink fairly quickly. The coffee is fantastic - especially all of the daily drip choices. Prices are on par with Philly coffee shops. They have a small selection of food choices which are also good (croissants, bagels, etc.) and local. Highly recommend if you are in the area.
google avatar

Anna D.

Yelp
One of my favorite coffee places in the area. The glass doors/windows give the feel of you sitting outside even when it's colder and an outdoor table isn't an option. The baristas are knowledgeable about the coffees they have available and are really friendly. The coffee is awesome. Hard to go wrong with anything you order here. They also have season specials to keep things interesting. Definitely a great spot in the Grad Hospital area.
google avatar

Katie O.

Yelp
The coffee is good, but definitely very hipster. Sometimes it is difficult to snag a table. They have outside seating during the warmer weather which is nice. Overall, it is a good coffee shop. The baristas can be hit or miss on the friendliness level.
google avatar

Selina S.

Yelp
My friend told me about this coffee shop and I am so glad I checked it out. This place is pretty quaint and cozy. I love the glass windows since it makes this small space seem a little more spacious. This seems like a nice place to catch up some work and study. The quality of their coffee is definitely 11/10!

Ivy C.

Yelp
Love to study here. Great coffee! Cute little spot. My go to for coffee in the city. The dirty chai is also incredible!
google avatar

Sara S.

Yelp
In the time that I've lived down the block from ultimo, I can say confidently I've stopped in on a semi daily basis. It's not a cheap cup of coffee, however it is the best cup of coffee. The staff has proven to be stellar at providing a warm and uplifting experience ever single visit. They are knowledgeable, kind and make my daily stops in for coffee something to look forward to. Also the biscotti is insane. I used to strongly dislike biscotti. I love theirs! For two dollars it's a bit steep however is a good size and has been a perfect accompaniment to their coffee or mochas. And in a city that has many beautiful and independent coffee shops I would say Ultimo stands out amongst them all as the very best.

Yelp
When you read the a definitive and absolutely DEAD ON best spots for coffee in Philly list like the one that Drew Lazor recently did for Philadelphia Magazine (http://www.phillymag.com/articles/best-coffee-philadelphia/) you find yourself anticipating the chance to try the very few spots that you haven't tried yet. ESPECIALLY when you read about your favorite coffee truck Rival Bros (http://www.yelp.com/biz/rival-bros-philadelphia?hrid=O1OSWyXpKdOjpkPmRT7Epw) FINALLY opening its own coffeeshop! Unfortunately when your excitement diverts you from reading the entire blurb you fail to read key details like it opening in the not too distant future, and end up walking to the location in a tiny snowstorm. D'oh! That's the exact situation that I set myself up for when I walked with a mission after the incredible sushi UYE at Aki. And rather then leave defeated I allowed my invigoration for caffeine to lead me to the nearest coffee destination on the list which was Ultimo. I'm far from a stranger to them since their Point Breeze location is one that I've wanted to give 10 STARS to for their tremendous combo of beers and coffee (http://www.yelp.com/biz/brew-ultimo-philadelphia?hrid=aGTIwXzRYodM0j662Oi6-A). And while their second location might not be as big, or feature beer on the menu; it did still earn plenty of reasons for me to give a solid 5 stars. The Counter Culture Coffee still flows from their impressive pour over filtered system, and they still offer an unheard of selection of varieties to choose from served from some very knowledgeable baristas. But they also offer a widespread selection of baked goods, as well as an impressive sandwich menu delivered from American Sardine Bar (Another winner - http://www.yelp.com/biz/american-sardine-bar-philadelphia?hrid=TG9mP-AEuNkuYH65703YZg). When I'm looking for a place to enjoy a coffee while killing time over free wi-fi, this is the type of place that I dream of!

Yelp
Ultimo is a bright, open coffee shop great for grabbing coffee or tea. Their product is very high quality and you won't be disappointed if you are a coffee snob or a coffee novice. The ambiance is super laid-back and welcoming and great for meeting up with a friend or getting work done. They do have sandwiches, pastries, and biscotti as well but I've only experienced their beverages. Ultimo has the friendliest baristas in Philly and they happen to be super awesome, knowledgeable, and passionate about what they do. Ultimo is by far one of my favorite coffee spots I've ever visited. The consistency and energy of this place can't be matched by any of it's rivals.

Yelp
Unless you are a white person don't expect to get a warm welcome. Both white male behind and in front of me in line, the barista cheerfully greeted them with multiple questions about how they were doing and how's the weather. I expected the same cheerful greeting but only got a "what can I get you". Sadly the reviews of the service being great is only targeted towards a specific demographic group. I only gabe 2 stars because the quality of the coffee were good. That's the only thing that was worth mentioning.

William A.

Yelp
We had the most rude employee tell us they were closing and we had to leave. We ordered some ice tea, sat down outside for 20 min around 4:30 on a Saturday and an employee comes out they were closed and we had to leave now and to get up and leave. Honestly we thought she was being funny and joking in an over exaggerated sarcastic way so as we were standing up we kinda joked and say "oh like right now, haha?" and she said ya we are closed I don't mean to be rude but ya leave. We kinda left in shock. Not somewhere I plan on ever going back to. it was a weird experience.

Yelp
For all of you coffee lovers, this is your place! I'm caffeine intolerant but I like to have a caffeine free cup of tea or a cappuccino (occasionally). All the times that I've been here, I enjoyed the tranquility of this place. Love their cappuccino as it stands out for it's quality. Also, baristas are very friendly and helpful. Ultimo is a great place for people who like to spend some quiet time doing paperwork, studying or catching up with a friend while enjoying a great cup of whatever you like. It's a neighborhood gem.
google avatar

Emily L.

Yelp
Excellent coffee and tea, always great customer service. I wish the place were bigger, as it fills up on weekends, but they do what they can with the space.
google avatar

Jan Matthew A.

Yelp
When Thrillist or whoever ranks this as the best coffee bar in the nation believe them. They have very good coffee and very nice people serving them. Additionally, even their pastries are delicious. I'm not a coffee expert so I can't speak too much to the taste, but it's a nice venus and they didn't mess up my order. However, I can speak to the BAR portion of the coffee bar. This location of Ultimo also has a beer bar available. About 10 beers on draft and more on bottle. Most can be served cold! Even more, they have specialty beers available. It was crazy to see some of special bottles and have it with my morning coffee. I elected to have a PA native beer from Victory. The lady there was very informative and nice. Anyway, this is a great coffee bar, in both aspects. Whether you want to study or sip on some delicious beer.
google avatar

David W.

Yelp
There's apparently a reason why this place is named Ultimo. Quite simply, it's the best coffee place in Philadelphia, and Philadelphia has many great coffee places. Drip coffee at a reasonable price. And that loading zone out front works just great.
google avatar

Diana B.

Yelp
Big disappointment. I'm an out of towner and went to this place wanting one of the sandwiches listed on the menu they have posted here on yelp -- and when I asked about it since I didn't see food other than the very few donuts in the window, I was coldly told "we don't have food. you were looking at the wrong cafe." I told the girl I wasn't, but both she and the other dude there started rudely insisting I had looked at the menu for a different place. I finally pulled out my phone and showed her the yelp menu to prove I *was* looking at the right place, and instead of being nice about it (or apologizing for practically calling me a liar), she just snarkily said "well that's obviously a really old menu from over four years ago" Over four years? Sheesh. And how this is obvious? It's not a huge deal to not have the food and it all to be a mistake, but what really annoys me is how cold they were. There's no need for the attitude. It's not my fault your stuff is listed wrong! How about fix your yelp listing and be polite about the mistake and then we all go on our merry way? The drip coffee was bitter, and I'm still starving because they are out of bagels, out of croissants, and don't have the sandwich I was craving because "obviously it's an old menu from four years ago" :-\ The environment is stale and uninviting, as were the people working there (THIS was obvious). Won't be back.

Yelp
Perfect. I love the glass of windows and the modern decor inside. The best latte I have ever had. Ever. And I am a total coffee snob. Then I tried their cappuccino. Perfection - every sip is a perfect mix of amazing espresso and creamy milk. They use a Strada MP - it is the most beautiful espresso machine I have ever seen, and it's top of the line. The croissants they have from a local bakery are amazing. The best I have tried in Philly. They have ruined all other coffee for me - no other latte or cappuccino is as good. I have walked a mile from work when I am craving a great latte.
google avatar

Robert C S.

Yelp
I can't seem to pass a coffeehouse without stopping in to sample the atmosphere, the pastries and of course the specialty brew of the day. A quick [google search] led me to this quiet lil shop w/ outdoor seating. Today's weather called for something iced, so I went with the "Flash Brew" which I learned was their cold brew but just fancier. (grin) The two baristas on staff were plenty pleasant, which is what you want when you patron any caffeine establishment. Having ruled out 1 of the 3 cookies, I'm proud to say that I almost incited a DANCE OFF between the baristas as they passionately offered up their fave selections to help me choose. In the end, Chocolate Chip-pecan won but I virtually pinky swore that I'd be back for the Chocolate Chip-Cherry contender. Today was a good day (smile)

Yelp
Coffee: delicious, always. go for the latte, trust me! Decor: amazeballs. really. Service: top-o-the-line. Wifi: consistent & fast. so...what are you waiting for?

Yelp
A nice locally run coffee shop with pastries and outdoor , dog friendly seating al fresco . Yes, count me in . Ultimo is a welcome addition to our neighborhood . The atmosphere is friendly, and its a good spot to meet up with friends for coffee or to get a few emails in while enjoying a cup of joe and dessert . I like that the outdoor seating is puppy friendly too .

Yelp
Ultimo Coffee won "best coffee" in Philly and its deliciously obvious why ( : what a fun and friendly, not to mention tasty cafenation, place to go and enjoy a coffee chat with friends or sit outside with you family and dogs. Really like this new coffee shop, it adds a lot to our neighborhood.

Yelp
Beautiful coffee shop that serves great coffee and decent pastries (I can only speak to the croissants). The modern, clean, and simple architecture with large windows allowing for lots of light makes for a great place to meet up with people and do work. On the whole, though, the coffee shop is on the smaller side. The baristas are very friendly. Every time I'm there I've had a consistently positive experience of great service, great coffee, and refreshing and relaxing atmosphere.

Yelp
Yawn. I need some coffee. So, I took off my smoking slippers and replaced my silk robe with a silk scarf tied artfully around my perfectly kissable neck. I hopped on my customized commuter bike and pedaled smoothly across Rittenhouse Square to Ultimo, where I parked my bike right in front where they have ample but tasteful bike parking. I was greeted by several Warby-Parker bespectacled baristas who took my order on their iPad and grinded my carefully selected coffee beans I requested after getting a fifteen minute briefing on the intricate and subtle flavors each one exhibited. A free cup of coffee brewed in such a fashion that it reminded of my laboratory postdoc students, was presented to me for my whole bean order which warmed my heart and perked my senses. Modern. Simple. Small but not cramp. Bring your best outfit, smartest book, and cutest terrier and perch outside.
