The 20 Best Restaurants In Germantown & Mount Airy

"Ultimo Coffee, which has three locations in Philly, is definitely in the camp of “trendy coffee shops.” But it’s not elitist or snobby, and the Germantown cafe is actually casual and quite comfortable. They have a solid assortment of croissants, lemon cakes, and thick focaccia sandwiches, just in case the coffee isn’t cutting it. And maybe boosting your caffeine intake with a sticky bun will give you the sugary kick you need to keep writing that novel (or even just answer a few emails)." - candis mclean

The Best Coffee Spots in Philly

"There’s the original Ultimo shop in Point Breeze, plus locations in Graduate Hospital, Germantown, and Rittenhouse, the latter being home to a custom powder-coated espresso machine. That machine isn’t just for looks — these coffee experts know how to pull a shot, and are among the best-trained baristas in the city. Pre-order online for pickup." - Ernest Owens, Eater Staff

I came here with a friend to study and it was the perfect atmosphere to do so. 10/10 ambiance!!!! It’s located in a great area with tons of free parking and there are plenty of seats available. The espresso is amazing quality and I really like the almond milk that they use, but I wish that they had a bigger menu with more flavors of syrups and options for food. They have a great selection of pastries, but very limited sandwiches. Overall, I would highly recommend if you’re in the area!!

Google
Really good espresso and pastries. Very spacious coffee shop and plenty of tables in addition to nice baristas.

I have been to Ultimo a couple of times before but recently I tried the vanilla matcha latte instead of my normal vanilla latte. It was pretty good, not watered down and the price is relatively affordable as far as iced matcha goes.

Google
Nice space! The focaccia they use for a breakfast sandwich is perfection served with egg/cheese and pesto, I enjoyed it very much:) The coffee was underwhelming, though, either over roasted, over extracted or something else, it made for a bitter beverage. To be fair, I had an Americano and I drink my coffee black, so it may be just fine for other applications, but not for me. The service was not great in that awkward 'I'm not sure if you want me to order' way, and the person putting the coffee up was super quiet about it. I saw a guy come ask if the espresso sitting there was his (which no one responded to) then he just awkwardly took it. Quite frankly, if you expect a tip for taking orders and making coffee, be welcoming and professional, then be clear about it when my order is up.

Google
I don’t like their coffee. Brewed coffee is sour to me and the Americano is watery. I love their Pesto Egg and Cheese sandwich. It is such a good combo. The environment is super friendly.

Google
Love this place but they really need to get proper ventilation for their kitchen! Every time I spend more than a few minutes here, my clothes end up reeking of bacon grease or cooking oil.

Google
Beautiful place. Friendly staff, great coffee. Much better than the “bigger brands” at a more affordable price. I love that I can support a local business.

Google
Wasn't cheap, but the signature egg, cheese, and pesto breakfast sandwich on focaccia was amazing. The ice coffee was also very good. Definitely going to stop by again next time I'm in the area.

Yelp
Clean, work-friendly environment. Fairly reliable product. Customer service is lacking. It's one of the least friendly coffee shops I've been to in the city. Totally works if you just need a cafe to work at and don't care if it has the warm/cozy vibe.
google avatar

Yelp
A cozy open feel cafe. The ceiling to floor window front (garage style) is perfect for a sunny day! There is bar style high top seating facing the street with regular tables spread about on the main floor. They take their time making each cup that's finely finished with latte art. Some baked goods are available as well so I had to indulge! The servers were welcoming upon arrival and took my order with a smile.

Yelp
In short this is a very nice coffee shop with amazing desserts. I've been a few times and although it's never empty it usually isn't excessively crowded or loud either. It's a nice place to hang out for a few hours and there's usually parking on the street outside. Definitely give this place a try!

Yelp
I walked into Ultimo for the first time yesterday, I was greeted with a light, airy atmosphere with ample natural light and greenery lining the room. There were several shelves peppered with their best selling coffees, food choices, as well as delicious looking pastries. I walked to the front and was quickly waited on by the barista. I ordered my standard Vanilla Latte(almond milk, light foam, heavy on the latte art). They gave it to me with no lid so I could see the Barista's (Baristo? Idk) frothy creation in all it's glory--which was quite frankly Coffee Porn. I'm talking the CoffeeHub.com levels. Anyway--I took my drink, got back in my car, and let it cool down to the recommended 135-140 degrees F before drinking (real latte connoisseur's know).Omg, delicious. No complaints. (Except they use authentic italian sizing so you may need 2 lol) Dissapointed I didn't know about this place when I was living at Rittenhouse Hill. Other notes: -street parking -takes credit cards -sit at the bar near the window

Yelp
Took a very long walk to this coffee shop based upon it's great reviews. It's a nice corner spot with a few outdoor tables making it a great place to relax on a good weather day. I ordered an Americano and my DH ordered a latte. Our orders were processed quickly with a smile. And then, I saw the pastries. They had this polenta citrus cake which I got and also an almond croissant. The cake was to die for! Thick, moist, very citrus but also sweet. The coffees were good. The place is clean and bright and I'll definitely go back in the future.

Yelp
On my most recent trip to my hometown Philly I found this little gem of a coffee shop. It had a small warm feel to it. The staff were all super attentive and nice! The coffee was delicious I had a cappuccino and they added just a hint of simple syrup per my request! I also had a breakfast sandwich which was also great. In my opinion way better than Dunkin !!!! 10 out 10 definitely recommend!!!!!

Yelp
Just threw away the whole cup... asked for an iced latte with extra shot of espresso. Cup filled to the brim with milk above 2/3rds and just given one shot of expresso. Tasted like milk. This was very disappointing. Will not return. I don't have time to waste on asking them to remake something.

Yelp
Ultimo is a fine addition to Germantown; the space used to be a car-parts store. It's well-lit and high-ceilinged and has some good pastries... I think I remember cake iced with sweetened whipped tahini, surprisingly good. Coffee is fine but hits a high slightly tannic note. The ventilation could be improved upon but in summer those lovely glass-paned garage-style doors are flung open, or up -- that helps. Friendly, courteous staff, nice blend of customers. It's a casual place, people don't posture here.

Yelp
Didn't realize I only had a fifty and no other form of payment. Totally understand if you don't have the money to make change but it was indicated that if it were fake the employee would be liable for the money, which is illegal. Seems pretty shady. 2nd time I've become aware of a lot of tension around counterfeits, previously waited 5 minutes for service because an owner was laying into staff over a fake bill. Counterfeit markers are like 5 bucks. Replacing staff costs so much more. Here I am with no coffee.

Yelp
Wanted to try a new spot around the corner from my usual coffee shop Uncle Bobbies - which I LOVE and HIGHLY recommend to anyone in the area. When I entered Ultimo with a few friends of mine (November 24th at around 2:30pm) we walked up to the counter to order. We stood there for a few minutes before we were even acknowledged. Which was fine, no big deal, I've worked in retail and food - so I get it. Finally the young woman behind the counter apparently said "Give me a second and I'll take your order." But all I heard was "I'll take your order." So I asked for a hot tea. She looked back at me and rudely said "ACTUALLY I'm doing something right now so I'll be with you in a minute." And her male co-worker chimed in and said "YEAH she's doing something." ......? - Ok, apologies for not hearing her correctly the first time (as if music wasn't playing and people were talking all around...) but their attitudes were extremely uncalled for. I suggest looking for new jobs if a simple miscommunication like that sends you over the edge. Do better. Again if anyone would like to support a professional and Black-Owned coffee shop, I suggest Uncle Bobbies around the corner!

Yelp
I really like this place, but unfortunately the WiFi never works. I've been visiting occasionally throughout the past year to see if they've fixed it but it's yet to improve. When asking the staff for assistance they don't seem to know why it's not working, but when asking other patrons they confirm the WiFi has never worked and you have to use a hotspot. Other than that it's a great spot! Good coffee and pastries. The giant front windows create an open and cool atmosphere. It'd be a great place to grab a coffee with a friend, but unfortunately the lack of WiFi doesn't make it very conducive to get work done (which is what I go to cafes to do). Such a shame.

Yelp
My wife loves this place. We go just about every other weekend. As a coffee lover though I really don't think their coffee is that great. I've gotten lattes too and wasn't terribly impressed by them either. I had the breakfast sandwich a time or two. They weren't bad but again it wasn't sending an APE #tothemoon Service is great and the spot is really cool. It one of those places I wish I was more into. That's why I can't give it less than 3. So as long as my wife stays with me I'll keep going here but if we ever part ways ...... it's over.

Yelp
Their coffee is alright but their chicken salad sandwich is amazing! My favorite and go to coffee shop to study.

Yelp
Such a beautiful place with super friendly staff!! Enjoyed my delicious latte and chocolate espresso cake very much.

Alena H.

Yelp
looking for a place to study on a Saturday around noon- stumbled across this coffee shop on yelp. needless to say it was the perfect ambiance to get some studying in. the sandwich was amazing- the bread was soft and arugula was crisp. the service was amazing as well- the man who took my order was patient and was learning how to make drinks as well, it was nice to see workers being so understanding and kind to each other! cant wait to come back!
google avatar

Yelp
I love cafes with simple syrup and milk to let you alter your own drink, and this one has oat milk too which I liked! I got an iced lattte with oat milk, and the espresso shot was very rich and flavorful. The service was super fast. This would be a cute place to grab a cup and catch up with a friend. Though the space inside is not too big, they also have outdoor seating.
google avatar

Rachel W.

Yelp
This place is always packed , and have amazing options. However it's insanely upsetting when one of their most sold items (chicken salad sandwhich) is always sold out. I've come in 3 times, 12,1230, and 1. And merely an hour -2 hours they're already sold out. It seems like a missed opportunity . All within this last two months. Super disappointing.

Yelp
Most consistently good new coffee place in Germantown area. Definitely hipster vibe but welcoming to the og residents

Mmk B.

Yelp
Just had a horrible experience today at the Gtown Ultimo location. Charged full price for literally a 1/2 cup fill of latte. Manager was a total jerk when I went back and asked for the latte to be remade, and she blamed the half fill on my husband who bought my drink. Huh? On top of the bad service, the place wreaked of a very bad noxious odor similar to one you'd expect to smell in a nursing home. There are too many good options for coffee around NW Germantown. Go elsewhere. Just sayin'.
google avatar

Vincent M.

Yelp
We were heading out shopping and wanted to grab a coffee. Looking for a new place we found Ultimo. You can place an order at the door and they're doing contactless payment right now (make sure you have a card.) It was a little quiet, so no wait. I had an iced mocha latte... Sweet with a bit of coffee bitterness. My wife had a latte with milk. Definitely a bit more of a bitter roast, though she said she should have asked for more milk. Looks like a nice building/space and hope to visit when they're open inside to the public.
google avatar

Yelp
I've been dying to check Ultimo and so grateful to be able to finally get in and support a local bidness. I love the scene here. Some light seating in the front but I love the entrance to store. It's large and open... so. Much. Room. For. Activities!!! Nonetheless, the tea was good and I added a egg sandwich with pesto which was solid. If you are looking for a neighborhood feeling business, this is location. I seen a guy come in, where the staff addressed him but name and moments later, boom double shot of expressing in hand. My life goal is be a regular someplace but I love variety! If you are in the Germantown area. I would definitely recommend stopping inside.
google avatar

Bonnie M.

Yelp
my roommate and i love coming here to read, journal, or just chat! we used to come here to do school work when we were students, as well. there is plenty of table space and seating - both indoor and outdoor. the baristas are always sweet and helpful! the drinks are affordable (and zero waste if you dine in!!!) and the food is delicious. i usually get an oat milk latte, which is so yummy. their chai is also so so good (plenty of spice). highly recommend!
google avatar

Queen M.

Yelp
Nice. I like the inside and outdoor seating. Not the most comfortable but ample. I sat inside at the high tops. It was nice to look out on the trees and the street while writing. My latte was good and I got the cardamom espresso cake which was delish. My only complaint was the bugs. I think because there is a huge tree over the building these were lots of bugs both inside by the window and outside near the tables. The time I spent swatting bugs aside, lol, good experience. Would come back. Ultimo also has a few other locations in the city so might try the others. 4/5
google avatar

Sabrina J.

Yelp
The best of all the Ultimos! The baked goods are always great, and I love that they are always changing up the food options. They are my favorite coffee roaster in the city. The space is also beautiful.
google avatar

Samantha C.

Yelp
I have been loving having this little coffeeshop in my neighborhood. I pass it almost daily on my way in to work, so I stop in probably more than I should. The latte is always perfectly prepared, and not ridiculously sweet like chain shops tend to do. I try to stay away from the baked goods, but the cheddar bacon scone is out of this world. The staff is always friendly and greets me as I approach the counter. My orders are usually ready quickly, which is great because I'm usually running late if I didn't bring coffee from home. I did recently see an interaction with the staff and another customer about the mask regulations (which have been ongoing for two years now- come on people) and they handled it incredibly well.
google avatar

Zita J.

Yelp
Had a peach blossom iced tea and an earl grey tea cake and it was delish! Staff was friendly and there are a lot of menu options. I came here and set up shop to get a little work done and there were plenty of seats and outlets. Only downside is this place gets a little busy so if you're coming for the workspace it may be a bit distracting at about mid-day as this is a happening spot or maybe you're into the bustle -- who knows. Either way I will be back.

Sam H.

Yelp
Legitimately my favorite coffee shop in the area, if not all of Philadelphia! The prices are super cheap, the atmosphere is very friendly, the food is good, and the service is quick and reliable. The best way to describe it all is eclectic; the flavors they use for their home-made treats are super unique, and you're met with such a wide variety of customers to dine with! Their dairy products are from a local farm with grass-fed cows. I highly recommend the breakfast sandwich (homemade bread, cheese, free-range egg, pesto, and bacon), iced tahini cake, and the lemon bars! I love how they prioritize zero-waste! If you dine-in, your drink is in a glass or porcelain cup/mug, and the sidebar with the mixins (oat milk, half-and half, sugar, stevia, simple syrup, etc) has a container of clean spoons for you to use, and a clearly-labeled container to place your dirty spoon when you're done.
google avatar

Sally L.

Yelp
Such a nice cafe!! It's so spacious and clean looking I love it! It's not too loud and has a great selection of coffee and pastries! I had their berry scone there and it was really really good. It was moist in the middle (most scones are usually too dry) and was the perfect amount of sweetness. I would definitely recommend this cafe for anyone in the area looking for a nice place to get things done or to go for just a nice cup of coffees. They have a lot of tables and two large tables, as well as the window bar-like seating on both sides. The staff there is super nice and helpful as well!
google avatar

David W.

Yelp
Much bigger than their Rittenhouse location, this one has all the same excellent features - the excellent coffee being number one. I stopped in on a Saturday AM, and the place as almost packed. It's very pleasant, well-lighted space, but it is LOUD when it fills up. Service at the counter was excellent. Seems to be just the thing for this neighborhood. Will be back!
google avatar

Janielle E.

Yelp
This spot is so cute! The staff is super friendly and the handmade treats are bomb! I ordered a slice of cardamom/espresso cake and an oatmeal cookie sandwich with vanilla cream - both delicious! There's also an adorable outdoor seating area. There's only 3 tables, but guests are in and out fast for quick bites and sips. So if you're patient, you can grab a seat! This café is truly a neighborhood gem and I will definitely return!
google avatar

Brooke O.

Yelp
First time visitor, wanted to check out the new spot that opened in my neighborhood. Nice change from Dunkin Donuts, I thought... Upon approaching wanted to check out the selection of pastries and baked goods that was offered. Two people behind the counter, as they finished with the person in front of me was expecting a greeting or a offering of help. I received nothing, as I try to decipher through the different baked good cause most weren't labeled, still no hello.. I was simply turned off and left without ordering anything.
google avatar

Meg T.

Yelp
I'm disappointed I went in the other day and got a coffee and a piece of bread and it cost 11 DOLLARS!! The coffee was about 3 dollars so that would mean the little piece of bread cost about $8... get out of here with these prices. I would like to know if i was mischarged or if that is correct ? I'm disappointed with the how unaffordable it is and will steer clear in the future.
google avatar

LuCrecha C.

Yelp
This little coffee shop has the potential to flourish in this neighborhood, but I can't say that I would recommend it to any of my friends. The sad reality it that they are woefully under stocked in the majority of their food items. I am referring to anything that is not a pastry or confection. This establishment opens at 7am and closes between 5pm-7pm depending on the day, which poses the question of why most or all food items outside of confections are sold out by 11am? I have even gotten there as early as 9am for breakfast and was told that it was sold out. My patronage has steadily decreased because 7 out 10 times, it's a waste of gas and time because they don't have anything. Gas is too expensive to waste it on the hope that they finally improve their food stores.
google avatar

Shannon M.

Yelp
Great spot with great coffee. Couple of small tables outside. Accessible atmosphere. This place has a neighborhood feel to it.
google avatar

Vanessa I.

Yelp
Upon walking in, you will enjoy the nice minimalist decor with sturdy chairs and a decent menu selection. However, this place is dirty. Floors dirty, tables dirty, bathrooms dirty. All the while, employees are standing behind the counter chatting away. Over the course of 3 hours I was there, all customers had their empty coffee cups sitting gathering dust and lord knows what else, because the workers weren't cleaning the tables nor picking up people's cups as people were coming and going. I nicely and gently mentioned this to the manager and I feel like the manager-girl caught a bit of an attytude about it. Then, later, a customer who was sitting in front of me spilled a trail of coffee on the floor from the milk station to her table, and also left a pool of coffee on the table when she left. No worries...I mentioned it to the staff there, and this 20-something-year-old little girl quipped, "Lemme see, because I can't see from here," as she was standing behind the counter, talking to her co-worker (I'm in my 50s - please stop with the can't see issue.) Then, I learn later (from my daughters who were also there) that the girl also caught an atty-tude because for her, there was nothing to clean. Like - lissen - if I slip on coffee spilled in your shop? We gonna have a HUGE very real problem. Lastly, we got there around 11am and left at 2pm. I used the bathroom right before I left and the floor was dirty and the trash can full. Like - come on y'all! The change in shift at 1pm should have cleaned the floors of the entire place (it's not that big - nice decent size) and emptied all trash throughout - like - what is going on at this place. They've been in business 6 months so far, so I'm told. Ultimo has potential, if they can keep the place clean, and clean up the staff's attitudes.

Yelp
What a lovely local spot to mosh, sip, chat, read, or work! Fabulous coffee, baked goods, sandwiches.
google avatar

Yinny C.

Yelp
Coffee is good, pastries are good too, staff are friendly and the shop is adorable however, the floors are never swept and have tons of crumbs everywhere that I don't ever want to put my bag on the ground.
google avatar

Xander S.

Yelp
Signature light + open design = welcoming space. The obligatory superb coffee and super good smells are also present. Germantown Ultimo rivals their Newbold spot for my favorite coffee space in Philly. - Shout out to Rally too - Walking up to the Wayne Ave corner joint I passed the Chelten Ave train station, a Dunkin, and Mastery Charter so new neighbors new friends to be made. Two glass garage doors
google avatar

Jonifin M.

Yelp
Just went here for a drink. I don't know who the woman making drinks is, but she's having a bad day it seems and was pretty rude to me. I just asked her was my drink warm enough because I like my drink hot. Her reply was mad snarky, "it's how we always make it", I guess that's a yes? I tipped and everything. She lucky I meditated this morning.

Yelp
So glad we found this location in the heart of Philadelphia. We had two chai lattes that were perfect with the right amount of foam and flavor as for the treats, those little sugar nuggets were delicious and tasty. The rhubarb bar was my favorite.

Najwa Z.

Yelp
I enjoyed a hibiscus iced tea, it was delicious! I love the ambulance very relaxing, fresh air flowing through out!

Yelp
Why this doesn't have 5 stars, or AT LEAST a solid 4, is beyond me. I visited here with 3 friends today, for the first time, and all of us had a pretty perfect experience! First off, the staff were very friendly and had a down to earth quality to them. Maybe it has to do with being from NYC but I'm accustomed to being met with a pressured, abrupt, and even rude workers, in similar cafes. I was delighted by my interactions with the cashier and barista who got our lengthy order perfect. While deciding on what baked sweet goods to get, I learned that they have a regularly changing selection. I had an egg, pesto, and cheese breakfast sandwich which was both unique and delicious. Made on the spot, as opposed to having reheated ingredients. My friend got one with bacon and she equally enjoyed hers. My skim vanilla latte, to stay, looked as delicious as it was. Pretty foam and strong espresso. I was so glad, btw, that they had skim milk. It's my experience that a lot of reputable coffee shops are opposed to skim milk. Why, I cannot tell you. So, it was a big win for me to have my prefered milk choice! The eco-friendly water system was another unexpected plus... they had glass cups to pour water from a pitcher into. I would absolutely return here.

Yelp
In the midst of studying, I took mental break to grab a bandaid from the register. At the counter, I saw a glimpse of what appeared to be one of my most deadliesttttt pleasures (as shown above) Without thought, I had to confirm if that was the Sesame Tahiti chocolate chip cookie. And........Of course it was! I smiled and, shared that it was by far the best cookie I've ever had! Didn't really have any intentions on purchasing one, but thought I should let them know how bomb that damn cookie was! I returned back to my seat, zoned out, and I seen the baker later rest a white tea plate w/ this amazing cookie near my computer and smiled :) * * Just want to let @ultimocoffee you have some of thee most sweetest employees day in & day out.

Matthew G.

Yelp
I love having their blondie brownie with my vanilla cap; Especially when they are warm!!! Definitely my fav!!
google avatar

Jamie Z.

Yelp
Welcome to your 10.00 5oz cup of coffee and the attitude from staff is off the charts.
google avatar

Jessica M.

Yelp
This place has two main issues: terrible service and uncleanliness. My suspicion is that whoever owns this business doesn't spend enough time there - because no owner would be proud to see dirty floors, tables, bathrooms etc in their establishment. The other issue is the service. There are two people that work there that are fairly nice but the rest definitely don't think they're there to serve customers. My advice to the owners - pay a little more attention to this place. I don't think your staff is doing right by the customers nor you.
google avatar

Kerry A.

Yelp
In the heart of G-town, a good percentage of foot traffic is people walking their dogs. Not only is there not a sufficient & safe place to leash your dog but you will also be publicly called out & escorted to the door as I was if you enter with a dog. Not worth the high price tag nor snobbery nor attitude. Will remain a loyal Germantown Espresso & Uncle Bobbie's & HighPoint customer.
google avatar

Jerry F.

Yelp
We had a crummy experience there today. The barista projected hostility and indifference. Question: how do you describe this person? My kids keep flagging me for being politically incorrect. Life is hard. This person's flat expressionless appearance was a real downer. Meanwhile I'm forking over big bucks for our coffee.

Gannon S.

Yelp
Best coffee and pastries in the city. Their breakfast sandwiches are incredible and very authentic. Love this place.
