"Of all the restaurants in the East Village, Uminoie might be the one that feels the most like someone’s home. It’s a long, narrow space in the bottom of an apartment building on 4th Street, the menus are handwritten and taped together like summer camp arts and crafts projects, and all the food comes out of a tiny kitchen located directly behind the bar. The menu is pretty small, but expect things like monkfish liver in ponzu, an eel omelette, and massive chunks of pork belly in a rich, salty broth. And be sure to drink some sake or shochu with whatever you order." - Bryan Kim

Authentic Japanese vibe. It has those seats where you sit on pillows on the floor. The place is definitely understaffed and consequently the service was slow. The Tako wasa came in a sauce bowl but had great flavors. The pork belly was tender and the eel omelette was cooked perfectly. However the portion size for the food was small compared to its price. They also had a nice variety of shochu.

Excellent food, and very rustic, Japanese dining experience. There are a wide variety of home-style Japanese dishes and sochus. One woman does all of the cooking, serving, etc. and she is very friendly and helpful with recommendations. Service is slow, but that's part of the charm.

Cozy, quiet, and relaxing. Interesting dish and drink selection. Food is snack portion so don't expect to be filled up. Definitely coming back again. Try their shochu tasting!

very cozy place for friends hangout. Very traditional Japanese dishes in East valley. The price is very fair for each dish. Kindly service and great shochu tasting list.

This place has a lot of rustic charm and it’s a great place to drink shochu with a small group of friends. The servers are friendly and make you feel at home. Unfortunately the prices are a bit too high and portions too small when compared to other neighborhood izakaya and the food quality doesn’t make up for the difference. As a reference point, a 12oz bottle of Sapporo is $9. You can get an entire pitcher for less at another nearby izakaya. Having said that, I liked the restaurant and I’d definitely frequent it if the prices were better.

A very homely place. If you're observant you'll notice that many things are cooked from scratch. Delicious, authentic, and an extremely friendly environment. Not busy the times I've been here. Good quiet atmosphere give this hidden gem 5 stars. I wouldn't doubt if for some this is a taste of home. For the rest it's a taste from abroad. Not to mention the kindest staff you can warm up to.

Horribly overpriced for the terrible service they provide. Went in a little late without knowing what time they close. Ordered a $200 sake around 11pm. They gladly took that order, and then notified that we should leave in 30 minutes. Turns out that 11pm was their closing time. They had the audacity to accept the order and then force us to leave. They also gave us plastic cups. All of this with a huge dose of degrading attitude. Probably the worst service I've experienced in a Japanese restaurant ever.

Discovered this place about 1 year ago. It's AMAZING. My fave place to take anyone, works for either dates or small gatherings of friends/family. The food and drink is about subtlety. Only a small handful of dishes knock you over the head with flavor. Mostly the food and drink is subtle but deeply layered with an irresistible aftertaste that leaves you desperately wanting more. The portions are small and the price is nothing to sneeze at, but it's worth every damned penny. Please check this place out.
