"Is that...a giraffe?"
"Yeeeeuuuuup. That would be a giraffe..."
Needless to say, a giraffe isn't the typical sort of thing you expect to see on the lawn of a bar. However, as a means to stand out from the pack on Rainey Street, it definitely gets the job done. After all, if not for the giant fake animal standing so prominently out front, we may not have decided to check this place out. What's more, it definitely adds to the whole concept/theme that they've got going on inside!
Despite how the line to get in was relatively long, the actual wait time wasn't nearly all that bad (took about 15 minutes to get in?). That said, while things moved along fairly swiftly outside, the same couldn't be said inside - this place was PACKED. Ironically though, as we made our way through the crowd, we actually found more and more space the further towards the back we went. Along the way, it was pretty cool to see the entire place adorned with the whole circus/carnival theme - the colors, the decorations, the slide, the games.
Once you get to the very back of Unbarlievable though, there's a bit of an open air space that's pretty chill. There's a bar that's fairly large, but the real appeal is the small little stage that's perfect for solo performances or, as was the case while we were here, a DJ set-up. Since my turn to buy a round never came up while we were here, I can't speak to the drink prices, but it's not surprising to see others mention how drinks are somewhat pricey here. However, the Maker's & Ginger And beers I had were decently made (read: the pour wasn't bad).
Since we didn't stay for very long (it was just too crowded for us), I can't really say much else about our overall experience. There's nothing like this back in SF (the crowd reminds me of a cross between the Marina and Polk), the music wasn't bad, and we had an okay time, but, other than our surroundings, not much about our experience was different from the other venues we hit along Rainey. Not bad, all in all, but it might have been more enjoyable had it not been as packed as it was.
