Yelp
it's official -- my (likely) last review as an Elite Yelper after 10 years. hey, i had a good run, and i had a lot of great food. anywho...
the last few years has seen restaurants all over shuttering. yet, somehow, unburger's remained open (and actually saw a recent remodel), and more surprising, i had never tried their food... until today.
i ordered the unoriginal (added bacon), nashville hot, and chili cheese fries. with tip, i wound up spending $51 on a binge takeout meal for myself. so, is unburger cheap? from the surface, no. but shit, in 2023... what is?
i ate the nashville hot first. i had seen some people claim that they thought the "chicken" was mushy, but i didn't get that at all. this very much had the texture of a chicken sandwich as far as i remember them. the real highlight of the sandwich was the freshly fried crispy breading though. the hot sauce itself just wasn't very spicy to me, and neither were the pickles. i was also hoping the pickles would be a little sweet and spicy to cut some of that saltiness. all-in-all pretty tasty, but a bit one note.
the unoriginal is rightfully unburger's best-selling burger. it's very much a big mac knock off in ideation, but i found it tasted more like burger king's version of one, largely because their housemade burger patties have BK's sort of flavor ... they're delicious. the burger is also massive compared to the chicken sandwich. the bacon i added didn't add a whole lot of flavor other than a mild smokiness. it reminds me of lightlife's bacon with a bit more oomph. like the nashville, i found this ... a little on the salty side. i was surprised (well, disappointed) that the mac sauce seemed completely lacking of sweetness for some reason.
the chili cheese fries were an obvious add to my order for $9. i considered nacho fries, but i was confused as to why they were $14. the portion was great, with the fries nice and crispy. oh hell yeah. the cheese sauce here is really top-tier -- probably the best i've had from a restaurant. the chili is tasty too, and in the best way possible, it reminded me of the slurry that comes out of the machine at 7-11.
basically... get it. i very nearly gave five stars, but everything had the same issue: salt. like i get that it's gourmet fast food, but the salt levels were a tick too high. that with the fact there's no accenting sweetness in the mac sauce and the nashville hot was nashville mild is why i'm figuring a 4/5. with that said, i wouldn't hesitate to say unburger is easily one of the best vegan restaurants in michigan.
