We picked up a Philly cheesesteak from Uncle Gus’ and were surprised that there was no line — we got our food in about two minutes, super fast! We brought it back to the hotel to eat, and the first thing we noticed was the bread. The outside is crispy while the inside stays soft — very different from many cheesesteaks we’ve tried, where the roll can be too soft. This one has a great texture contrast. The portion of meat was very generous — you definitely feel the steak in every bite. The cheese is fully melted and mixed into the meat, giving it a sticky, gooey texture. It’s a bit heavier than expected, but still satisfying. A good grab-and-go cheesesteak spot right by Reading Terminal Market. We’d come back to try more variations.

Old Uncle Gus' was incredibly busy. They had to keep asking folks waiting for their food to move back so people could get through the market. This may be why the beef was a smidge tougher than some of the really tender cheesesteaks that I've had. What that lacked was honestly made up for by the amazing long hots. How we can't get these in Florida boggles my mind. It was a great sandwich in an iconic location. Recommend.

I haven’t had that much « authentic » philly cheese steaks experience as they’re really not the same in Canada. This one was simply the best ever and i honestly don’t think i could find a better one if i tried. Bread was a little crunchy with nice sesame seeds, Cooper sharp cheddar was so good, the onions were perfectly fried.

Ordered a cheesesteak sandwich from Uncle Gus and it was extremely salty, to the point that it was inedible. This wasn’t just a strong flavor — the seasoning was completely unbalanced. The bread was good though. Took a few bites and had to throw it away. Very disappointing experience.

Out of the seven cheesesteak places I've tried in Philly, Uncle Gus' is easily top three (with Jim's & O'Brothers). Bread was very crispy and fresh, and I liked how they cooked the steak with the cheese. Fast service & friendly people. If you're a tourist looking for a good steak, this is a great option if you're only going to eat one. (Much better quality than Geno's or Pat's)

Loved this Cheesesteak. I know there are other favorites in town, but this was a great experience. The woman at the counter recommended the Cooper cheese instead of the whiz, and glad I did. Added mushrooms instead of the onions. Great crunch of the bread, and loved the sesame taste and texture. The steak was a perfect mix with the cheese, and so tender. Will definitely go back.

No Harmony: The Suffocatingly Arid $20+ Steak It is disheartening to write this, but the $20+ steak and cheese sandwich I received was a significant letdown. Despite the premium price tag—surpassing even DiNic’s or the excellent pastrami at East Side—the quality simply did not justify the cost. The Bread Visually, the loaf mimics the famous Angelo's bread, but the resemblance ends there. The sesame seeds were so pungent they dominated the palate, clashing with the beef rather than complementing it. I personally prefer a more neutral base that allows the steak to shine; here, the bread felt intrusive. Texture and Dryness The most frustrating aspect was the texture of the meat. It was suffocatingly arid and surprisingly lumpy, lacking any of the succulence or "melt" one expects from a high-end Philly steak. While the portion was generous, the beef felt desiccated and unrefined, making it physically difficult to swallow without a beverage. I usually avoid drinking mid-meal to focus on the flavor profile, but this was a struggle to get down. Lack of Harmony Despite the abundance of meat, onions, and hot peppers, the components felt disjointed rather than unified. Unlike the juicy, well-balanced sandwiches at Geno’s, this felt like a collection of separate, dry ingredients that failed to harmonize. Final Verdict: Perhaps arriving at 5:30 PM just before closing meant I missed the peak window, but this was the only sandwich of my three-day trip that truly disappointed. If I received such a let down sandwich because of the timing, was it my fault? If they cannot serve an ideal sandwich after a certain hour, perhaps they should close their store at that 'certain' hour not to fail customers. For a $20+ investment, the result was a fragmented, parched, and ultimately lackluster experience that was hard to swallow. Ugh. Adding insult to injury, this was the only sandwich in my three-day stay that caused all-night stomach reflux. Between the lumpy texture and the digestive aftermath, it’s clear that something was fundamentally off with this meal.

In my tour to find the best Philly cheesesteak, I dropped by uncle Gus'. This place was amazing. I ordered mine with mushrooms and cherry peppers. The mix was wonderful and the toasted sesame bread was ideal for soaking up the juices. As an aside, they do not offer a vegetarian option, but I won't hold that against them. Service was friendly and food came out quickly. Definitely swing by here for a sample of some of the best that Philly has to offer.

I only heard of Copper Sharp two years ago and I'm not surprised that it quickly reached #3 on Billboard's Top 40 cheese chart. With the assertive flavor and top-quartile meltability I applaud Uncle Gus' for a taking a stand. The sandwich is all mixed together, there's not a massive cheese lake. I do prefer a large and possibly messy cheese area. I can't say which is the "right" method and accept that this preference may be considered a touristy sin on the level of toasting bagels.

I stopped by for a tourist staple and was not disappointed. The entire area was filled with great food options. Our line to buy was quick, but the line to pick up was a little longer. But no big deal as it was pretty busy everywhere. The cheese steak was very good portion size, and very comforting. My only disappointment is that I added a side of peppers and it was neither enough quantity or flavorful enough to bring the acid in an overwhelmingly rich sandwich. I guess the second disappointment is the lack of seating in this food court. Its a dog eat dog fight for the communal tables and they're pretty far away. But it's not really their fault. Either way, if you're in a pinch for a Philly classic this place does the job. But if you have more time I recommend browsing the options first!

I was visiting and wanted a real Philly cheesesteak. The sign gave two choices - Cooper Sharp or Whiz with the option of adding onions, mushrooms and cherry peppers. I ordered the Cooper Sharp at the woman behind the counter's suggestion. It was good, but it also little thick and overpowering for my tastes. An a-ok sandwich, but I was expecting more.

Eating a Philly cheese steak in Philly is a prerequisite. Eating at Gus' to sample said cheese steak is also a must. While I think my days of craving such a rich sandwich are over, I still think that it was perfectly executed. Being in the Market East building, it represents what markets should represent in the US. It is an amazing representation of the sandwich and an iconic location for both tourists and locals to enjoy - although I assume the locals don't imbibe on the weekends. With it being just a stall in the market, you jump in line to order your sandos, pay, then wait (sometimes several minutes) to pick up your number on the side. The steak sandos are all made fresh and they are piping hot and wrapped when you pick it up. Finding a spot to sit on a Saturday is often difficult task, but not impossible. My wife and I were able to find a location toward the back of the market, where we enjoyed the classic Philly cheese steak (just cheese) and the steak sandwich with peppers. First bite was amazing, the bun is perfectly selected for the steak, with both the sturdiness and the flavor to compliment the messiness of the sandwich. The steak was piping hot, and deliciously decadent. After trading many bites, the conclusion was that the steak and peppers were the winner, but the cheese steak was no slouch.

While visiting Philadelphia we chose to eat at Uncle Gus's for our second Philly Cheesesteak here. I got the steak sandwich with Cooper Cheese. The sandwich was very large with lots of meat and a whole lot of cheese and man was it messy. I could have just ordered half of this. While I really liked the bread and the meat, I thought there was just way to much cheese, it Overwhelmed the meat.

Traditional? No. Delicious? Holy mother of God! For the sake of full disclosure I did not come to Redding Terminal Market for a cheesesteak. My plan had been a roast pork sandwich from my favorite place in town. However, by the time I got to the market, my roast pork place had closed for the day. Gah! I didn't even want a cheesesteak. Getting one in the midst of all the options inside the market felt like a copout. And there was a lot about Uncle Gus' that filled me with a deep amount of suspicion. But I was curious. A cheesesteak with sharp cheddar? Welp, consider me converted. Gorgeous fried onions. Toasty sesame seeds on a beautifully crusty roll. Cheese melted into ever nook and cranny of chopped shaved beef, all of which was packed into the roll so it resembled something like a meat torpedo. The thing is glorious. It's also huge. In part I think I would have been happier splitting this monster with someone, but I polished off the whole thing and then took a mighty long walk. Considering this cheesesteak to be a meal for two might help one swallow the almost $20 it will set you back. But food has gotten more expensive. I get that. And good food is worth every penny. I have no regrets. I'd do it again if I were in the market for a cheesesteak, especially if I had a partner in crime to eat the other half. At the end of the day I'm still team roast pork over cheesesteaks, but despite the liberties Uncle Gus has taken with the form, the product there is exceptional.

Uncle Gus' Steaks in Terminal Market is the real deal. I had a cheesesteak with fried onions and it was an easy 10/10. Perfectly cooked steak, great flavor, and everything tasted fresh and authentic. This is what a Philly cheesesteak is supposed to be. If you're in the market and craving a legit cheesesteak, don't miss this spot. I'll definitely be back!

We were visiting Philly for a concert and the Uber driver recommended Uncle Gus' at the Reading Terminal Market. We tried several cheesesteaks while we were in Philly and these were our favorite. The bread is different and delicious. The ordering was quick and easy. We ordered ours to go so I am not sure about a seating area but I didn't see one. Definitely worth a visit!

Very good. Great stop for a cheesesteak downtown (especially for giving authentic experience to tourists on a quick sojourn). Line up at the counter on the black tape. Cooper sharp or whiz, onions or no onions. Additional toppings available, as well as chips and drinks. Line moves quickly. Then move to the yellow tape box and try to not have a panic attack as you get squished and continually get yelled at to get in the box! I waited about ten minutes from the time I ordered. Bread is a highlight -- very crispy and seeded. The amount of cheese was excellent! The meat was a little overly chewy, but otherwise it was well done. I would have liked some ketchup and a single napkin in the bag would have been nice with a $20 steak. Overall, a great addition to the terminal.

Went back to Uncle Gus' because I had a visitor who wanted to go to Reading Terminal, and I must say this second visit was better than my first. While my previous cheesesteak from them felt understuffed and oversalted, my more recent one made a better impression. There was a generous amount of meat, and I really liked the melty cheese contributing to the juiciness. Still have my quibbles with them - I prefer the classic unseeded Amoroso rolls to the more "modern" seeded ones and the diced onions could be more incorporated into the meat and cheese to keep them from slipping out. But for a solid cheesesteak in an easily accessible location (my favorites are further out in the city), Uncle Gus can get the job done.

I'm no Philly cheesesteak expert though I hafta say their cheesesteaks are legit yumm! Came by on a Saturday afternoon in mid-August to grab a couple sandwiches to go, and the entire market was a synthesized traffic jam of locals and tourists. The line at Uncle Gus' peaked at about 20 people deep, not to mention another 20 people waiting around an approx rectangular 10 ft by 5 ft space next to their stall that was demarcated uniquely as their own crowded waiting area. Man they were super busy! The steam from the grill clouded up their prep area--they were that slammed (see my pic of the grill). It took about 10 minutes to order and 10 minutes to wait for 2 cheesesteaks ($18 each plus extra for toppings). I was told by a Philly native that you need to wait a little bit of time instead of eating it right away, so the flavors can meld together more. Dunno about the veracity of that claim though I waited 45 minutes since we went to a BYO food wine garden (review to come for that later) to meet up with some others, so we didn't eat our sandwiches right away. With my first bite I was hooked--the sliced meat was juicy, aided by the mild cheese which had melted and acted almost like a slather of sauce enveloping the meat. The mushrooms (+$2) were well cooked, the long hots (+$2) added a little kick, just enough to break up the heaviness. Caramelized onions off the grill were fabulous to add a bit of sweetness. The roll was perfectly toasted, hefty enough to hold the generous serving of thinly sliced beef, fluffy and chewy on the interior but also with a crisp crust that doesn't scrape the roof of your mouth when you go in for that big satisfying bite. Appreciated that the sandwich wasn't too salty. Didn't have much interaction with the staff, though could see they were pumping out those cheesesteaks as quickly as possible. Who knows when my next Philly cheesesteak experience will be, but I know it'll be hard to top this one!

We stayed across from Reading Terminal on a recent visit... dangerous! As Uncle Gus's was literally across the street. We had it twice... it was superb. A perfect conglomeration of beef and cooper sharp, onions fried, and a roll that stood up to a generously filled sandwich. We grabbed another before we departed for the airport. They kindly double wrapped it to help keep it warm... when we ate it at the airport prior to departure, it was still amazing!! No complaints at whatsoever!

Did a cheesesteak tour and this was number 4 on our list. A solid cheesesteak that I would get again.

I got a cheesesteak with cooper sharp, mushrooms, and no onions (4.5/5); it was really good! The bread was nice and crunchy, and the seeds added to the crunch. The mushrooms further enhanced the flavor of the sandwich, which melted in my mouth. The service was incredibly fast (5/5); they do a great job of making the sandwiches very quick.

Went to visit Reading Terminal and noticed the huge line for cheesesteaks. So decided to return later and it did not disappoint. Bread was amazing and help up with the cheese and steak. Yes try it. Also, service was fast.

I was torn between 3-4 starts. The cheesesteak had a slightly strange flavor to it. Not the best tasting cheesesteak in the city. It was stuffed with lots of meat , they don't skimp but Cooper cheese doesn't do it for me. I wish they offered other cheese options like provolone. The bread was good but I'm partial to sandwiches on Sarcone's rolls due to the better bread flavor. Having had many cheesesteaks from Angelo's, I prefer Angelo's over UG. For the $18 price, I went with 3 stars.

I ordered the cheesesteak sandwich with crispy onions. It was delicious and fresh. I also ordered the cheesesteak from Down Home (DH) diner at Reading Terminal Market. While this cheesesteak was more expensive, it was better in comparison. Will definitely stop by again when I am in Philadelphia.

Food halls are often filled with gimmicks, or decent food that would be so much better if it had its own brick and mortar store. Uncle Gus breaks the mold. This is one of my favorite cheesesteaks in all of Philly. If you want any Angelo's but are allergic to lines, you can get a cheesesteak here in 10-15 mins, even during lunch rush. Incredible cheesy, delicious bread, a perfect sandwich.

in Philly for a day and had to get a Cheesesteak, boy Uncle Gus's did not disappoint. They were quick and friendly and it tasted amazing! I will def be back!

10/10 Philly! The grilled onions, melty cheese, perfectly cooked steak, and thick, crunchy bread were all on point. We grabbed ours at Reading Terminal Market... there was no line, super quick service, and they even offered to split it for our group of three. Fast, easy, and absolutely delicious. Would definitely enjoy again!

This was a religious experience. I mean this has to be one of the best cheesesteaks in Philly. Staff was quick and helpful. Very minor wait time. Great atmosphere of reading terminal market makes this cheesesteak even better. Uncle Gus is a collaboration between Angelos and DiNics and worth every penny. Crispy roll. Rich creamy cooper sharp and fried onions makes this a 10 out of 10 !!!

I was watching a food reviewer on YouTube and he gave Uncle Gus a high rating for best cheesesteak in Philadelphia. So I needed to try out this cheesesteak. I never had a cheesesteak with whiz so I tried it out today. There was no line to place my order and was given a number 52 and I heard the guy call 43. I barely waited 6 minutes before I heard number 52 being called. Can I say this cheesesteak was absolutely delicious ! I am now a fan of the cheese whiz. I normally get cooper cheese. The fried onions were cooked down just right. The sandwich was perfectly seasoned. 5 stars!!!!!

You can definitely tell you're in the north by the way these people talk. lol. But I finally got to try authentic Philly cheesesteak in Philly! This place is in Reading terminal and it is fairly quick service. You can choose to add sweet or hot peppers and onions and mushrooms. I just got hot peppers and they give you big chunks of peppers. It was so good, the cheese was melted perfectly. The meat was tendered and seasoned. I personally don't like bread for subs because it's just too much bread, but I loved how toasted it was especially with the seeds because it brought an additional layer of flavor.

YUM. Swung by Gus's while walking around the market and would say it's one of the better cheesesteaks I've had in Philly. It was packed generously with meat and onions tossed in Cooper sharp with fresh bread. We added long hots to it, just wish they put on a few more given the upcharge for it. There's no seating, so you have to get lucky and find seating elsewhere in the market or take it to go.

Uncle Gus' was a very good Philly we got inside the reading terminal market. Got the cheese steak with cooper sharp and onions. It was very good. Not the best Philly we had but top 3 for sure. Bread tasted fresh and had a nice crisp on the edge and soft inside, while holding together nicely. I think the steak maybe just lacked a little flavor to me. Good portion size, both size, and amount of cheese. Could've used some more onions in my opinion. Service wasn't the friendliest but they were efficient. They had a guy there to manage the line, I got lucky and got in right before it got super busy. But overall a very good Philly and would try it again if at the market and craving a Philly.

I was in Philly this past weekend to support my wife for the Rocky Run and I was there for the Marine Corps birthday. I asked around for suggestions for the best Philly cheesesteak sandwich in the area. few people suggested Uncle Gus's Steak.. so i went and well, what can I say.. its good but I wouldn't say its great.. so I tried other places like Georg'es in the same place and another that i cant remember and they are pretty much all the same.. I do agree that, the greasier the better and also the cheese makes a difference... the whiz cheese "ruins" it big time.. go with provolone, monster or a Stronge cheese to bring out flavor of the meat. Its the natural Glutamate in the cheese that makes it better because it acts like MSG.. just natural..

When is Rome, do as the Romans do. Hopped off an early Thursday am flight into PHI, jumped on the train, landed at Jefferson station. Walked across street on a mission to get a cheesesteak. Enter Uncle Gus' Steaks. Like dodging bullets on a battle field of deliciousness, I reluctantly pass by Thai, ice cream, pizza, tacos, in search of the holy grail. After walking through many of vendors, I find the spot. Line of unsuspecting tourists, myself included, violating the line up rules forming a long snake extending well into the neighboring vendor foot traffic space. Gus' director of line efficiency witnessed the foul, blew the whistle and directed us to the U SHAPED directions on the floor (see attached image). Get cozy, keep it tight & watch the grill as you get closer to the end order spot. Cooper Sharp? Wiz? Onions? Peppers? Many options. 2 cheesesteaks w cooper sharp & onions, a coke. $40, plus tip. Waited 7 minutes, got sandwiches, and found a spot in the seating area in the middle of the reading terminal market. Cracked these babies open & WOW. The sesame bread is hollowed out so less bread, more meat. Not soggy like a Chicago Italian beef. This long, firm vessel of sesame tastiness hugs the tender beef & cheese like your grandma tucking you into bed. Cut in half, the structure of sandwich is impressive. Chew is excellent. Flavor profiles all in harmony. Just what I needed. Hit the spot. The other 2 people in my party enjoyed. Zero complaints, all praise. Thanks Uncle Gus! Now, where's my hotel?

Uncle Gus' Steaks is located in the Reading Terminal. When we went it was at lunchtime and super crowded. The line to order wasn't long but the wait to get the cheesesteak was 15 minutes. We got the steak with copper shark cheese. It was pretty good and I liked the bread was toasted.

You certainly get your money's worth!! The Philly steak is to die for at uncle Gus in reading market. When you enter it's a madhouse and so many restaurants to choose from and many ethnicities. Seating is hard to find because it's crazy busy. This steak was juicy, cheesy and loaded with mushrooms. That's what we wanted. They did have the truffle onions and peppers. I asked for American cheese which was creamy. If you want cheez whiz you have to ask for Whiz! The bun was fresh and soft. I recommend one sandwich for two people; that's how big it is with so much steak!!!! Loved it the HALF of the sandwich was as big as my hand. Bon appetito

Excellent cheesesteak!!! It's located in the Reading Terminal Market, and is a must try if you're in Philly. The bread is perfectly crispy without being hard. The meat was so flavorful and delicious caramelized onions. Fantastic cheesesteak!!

I had to get the time to check out this new cheesesteak spot in the RTM in collaboration with Angelo's and DiNics (see my review)! I was glad to get in on the bandwagon. I had seen one or two negative reviews but too many high-five reviews from the professional food industry critics. Count me in on being another high-five. The number of people waiting for their food on a Thursday lunch rush about 12:45pm was heavy and blocking a set of the entrance and exit doors. So, I think that's a good sign that there's a lot of return customers or a lot of people just wanting to see for themselves about how good this cheesesteak is. Surprisingly, no one was in line to make their order and I gave mine to the friendly counter girl. Provolone, onions, mushrooms, and long hots. My ticket number was 95 and they just called 72. Looks like I had a bit of a wait. Paid my cash $21(!) and didn't have to pay a credit card fee. Although there was a 20 number difference, they were calling ready orders out of order and I really only had to wait about 10 minutes with the cattle pen of customers. Once I got back to work, I was anxiously awaiting the reveal and tasting. It was delicious. Lots of meat, the provolone was well mixed in, onions and mushrooms buttery, and the long hots were definitely hot. To me, the best part was the seeded roll that didn't turn mushy, and has to be my new #1 roll. The cheesesteak as a whole is in my top five. It was on the expensive side at $21 but it's a good go-to for when I have a cheesesteak urge. Another Reading Terminal Market winner!

This was a must stop for me while I was visiting Pennsylvania. This place is absolutely iconic and I cannot recommend it more. The food was above and beyond divine. I had the cheesesteak with peppers and I don't know how they got so much cheese into the steak, but it was amazing. Also, the bun wasn't just some run of the mill bun, but complemented the meat perfectly. The surface was amazingly quick and efficient. I do not know how they get all that orders done so quickly, but it was super fast. The ambience was inside the Philadelphia market and was bustling with people and smells. I really enjoyed the experience and will definitely make this a stop in the future.

I finally made it to Reading Market to try a Philly Cheesesteak. I made it to Uncle Gus Steak and ordered the Cheesesteak with Peppers & Onions. I was lucky to go on a Friday. I was able to get my Cheesesteak in no time. I returned to Reading Market on a Saturday. It was jam packed with people.

The internet tells me there are better cheesesteaks than this one, and I don't doubt it. But after biting into a cheesesteak from Uncle Gus's, it's hard to believe that a cheesesteak can get much better than theirs either. It's a simple sandwich, but that's the point. Loved the crunchy yet somehow chewy seeded split roll, the flavorful chopped up meat (and fried onions), the cooper sharp and the hot peppers. It came out piping hot. Stuffed, but admittedly not overstuffed. If that's a problem for you, so be it. I didn't mind at all. The line was long but it moved fast. A little pricy at $17, but a great sandwich from a city that knows great sandwiches.

Really enjoyed the cheesesteak, which was definitely packed with meat & cheese and not skimpy. I'd say it's a pretty great bang for your buck! Even though it can get crowded in the market, they've streamlined the ordering process down to the waiting area. Before you know it, you've got your food and you're good to go. If you're in the Center City area, might very well be the best option around!

The menu is simple and the food is exceptional. The service was quick and the place was charming. The best cheese steak sandwich I ever had with cooper sharp cheese and onions. It was huge, need someone to share with. Delicious

This was my first time ever trying a cheesesteak, and as a tourist in Philly, it felt like a must. A gentleman from Philadelphia sitting next to me on the flight told me, "You have to try one while you're here," so I took that advice seriously. I ended up at Uncle Gus' in Reading Terminal Market because of the great reviews. When I saw the size of the sandwiches, I hesitated a bit--it looked massive. I asked the woman at the counter if they offered half portions, and although she checked with her colleagues and said no, she went out of her way to point out two or three other places in the market where I might find smaller cheesesteaks. She didn't have to do that, and I really appreciated how kind and patient she was. In the end, I decided to go for the full sandwich here--and I'm so glad I did. The cheesesteak was packed with tender, flavorful beef, perfectly melted cheese, and sweet grilled onions. Everything came together so well. The bread was a standout: slightly crisp on the outside, soft on the inside, with sesame seeds on top that added a really nice extra layer of flavor. It soaked up the juices without falling apart. It was definitely a big portion--I couldn't finish even half of it in one sitting. For a first cheesesteak experience, I couldn't have asked for better. Great sandwich, and even better service. Highly recommend for first-timers like me--just come hungry! One caveat: Reading Terminal Market was quite busy in the afternoon and it was so hard for me to find a seat. But the ambience is vibrant!

So it's hard for me to admit that there is any place in Philly that offers a better cheesesteak than John's Roast Pork. I drive hours and hours to Philly just for a cheesesteak. So when I heard Angelo's has been rated better, and their new sister site Uncle Gus's opened in Reading Terminal, you knew I had to try it. I came after lunch rush and there wasn't a single person in line. The service was quick, efficient. The price got me. It's definitely a lot more than what I pay elsewhere but I figured that's got to be cause they're in RT. I was bummed they were out of provolone. And the person at the register wasn't sure if it was sharp provolone or mild. They were just out. So I settled for cooper sharp. For me, what makes John's The best is the roll and the meat to cheese ratio. No other place has come close to their standard. I got to be honest: Angelo's roll lives up to the rating. The bread had flavor that out flavored the meat and cheese. I can understand why it's getting such high reviews. If Uncle Gus's is a reflection of Angelo's, then they have my vote for best cheesesteak...in Reading Terminal. I guess I need to have a showdown between Gus and John's side by side. But with provolone. It's the only way to settle the debate in my opinion. All in all, it's a nice little corner counter. I can't imagine what it's like in a rush. But I'll be back for sure.

For me, this was a pretty "meh" food experience. Last time I was in Redding Terminal Market and wanted a cheesesteak, I got Spataro's and I ranked that as one of the best cheesesteaks I'd ever eaten. Sadly, Spataro's is gone now and Gus's didn't come together quite as well for me. My order was a cheesesteak with Cooper shape and grilled onions. It comes on a sesame seed roll. For me, the beef wasn't all that flavorful and the bread was tough to bite through. There was nothing there compelling me to eat more and that was difficult because the portion is massive. At an $18ish price tag for sandwich, I think you are getting a pretty good deal as long as you have either a very robust appetite or someone to share with. I had neither and ended up taking 1/2 home and eventually pitching it in the hotel garbage. I couldn't bring myself to trash it fresh, but later on it wasn't worth it to me to try to reheat. Service was fast, effective, and fairly friendly. There isn't any counter seating like at some places in the market. You order and then wait in a small area next to the restaurant for your food to be prepared. They had some fans going in that waiting area which was quite refreshing after being out in the hot sun for a few hours, but lack of counter seating meant having to solve the puzzle of getting a table in the crazy-busy public seating in the back of the market. If you want to try it, hover and pounce is my recommendation.

I was staying across the street from Reading Terminal for a conference and obviously cannot leave Philadelphia without stopping by for some iconic eats before the long drive home. My original plans for lunch fell through and saw the crowd gathered here. I was concerned that this was because they were the only cheese steak game nearby, but after quickly checking fellow Yelper reviews I decided to give Uncle Gus a chance. Given the cost of food nowadays I thought $18 for what was a massive sandwich was very reasonable especially considering red meat is a more expensive commodity. The ordering line moved quickly and the staff were appropriately courteous. Let me tell you Uncle Gus has the assembly line down. There was easily a crew of eight people working there and minimally six working on making sandwiches. Despite having 5+ people ahead of me waiting for their orders we all received our food within five minutes and it was hot and fresh. I ordered on a Sunday around 12:45 PM during peak hours. I decided to enjoy my cheesesteak outside. And yes of course I asked for onions and wiz. First of all props to Uncle Gus for the crunchy sesame hoagie bread. It is a nice texture contrast with the cheesy onion steak deliciousness. The bread was crunchy on the outside, but soft and chewy on the inside. A perfect combo to house the messy inner sandwich contents. The steak was nicely chopped, tender, and the mix of perfectly sauteed onions merrily mixed together in cheese wiz was great. All of my sandwich ingredients were perfectly incorporated and they did not skimp on the wiz as evidenced in my photo below. My only critique is perhaps the steak could be a bit more seasoned. There are a few other spots in Philly that might be a little higher on my cheese steak rankings, but Uncle Gus and team you have my respect for a very solid cheesesteak that will keep my cravings satiated until my next Philly trek.

Cheesesteak is 5 stars all the way. The bread alone makes it amazing. However, the lack of American cheese as an option as well as the long wait make this 4 stars overall. (I waited 25 minutes for 1 cheesesteak). Did I mention how good the roll is? Second to none. I like all cheeses, I'd love one more option of American. I also would've liked the onions to be inside the sandwich instead of piled down top and falling out when you unwrap it. Flavor was there, just a little messy. Also, when there are around 20 to 30 people waiting for steaks, it gets really crowded by the door and annoying for people coming in and out of the exit, and especially annoying with the megaphone blaring out order numbers. As stated, the cheesesteak is a five star masterpiece. The rest of it, is a little bit of a cluster and inconvenient. Worth it? Definitely, but I don't like the slow process. But you know we will be back!!!

Looking for a solid cheesesteak spot and you are at Reading Terminal, go to Uncle Gus'! This establishment was started by people who are responsible for DiNic's, Pearl's Oyster Bar, AND Angelo's Pizza! With a leading cast like this, there are a LOT of expectations. This is definitely a no-frills spot. You line up, order your cheesesteak, wait, get it, find a seat, and feast! The pricing can be seen to be a little higher than other typical cheesesteak spots, but the convenience if it being very near to the convention center and fact that it is in a somewhat touristy spot makes sense. As for the cheesesteak, I tried their cheesesteak with Cooper Sharp cheese. The bread they use is the same as Angelo's, which I will say sells one of my favorite cheesesteaks in Philly. The cheesesteak itself tastes pretty good too! I will say they should look to slice up the steak a bit more, as it can be tougher to eat with the larger pieces where it would require extra chewing and a messier experience. Overall, this is another great option and due to that, be prepared to wait during peak times. I suggest that you order here immediately upon coming into Reading Terminal and then browse the area and maybe get a snack/appetizer to pass the time until your order is ready!

Was staying at a nearby hotel that was walking distance from here. My husband and I have tried the two other famous places in Philly but we 1) we thought they were okay and 2) we did not want to drive there from the hotel. I quickly placed our order while my husband looked for a table further away. It was like looking for a parking spot back in NYC, difficult. Lots of people waiting for their food. I kept waiting, the #s called kept going up (above mine). But sometimes the order #s make no sense, so I just waited. Finally, I got tired of waiting and asked about my #. The attendant checked under the register and pulls it out. I was in shock! I asked how long was my order sitting there? She says we called the # but no one answered. Hmmm ... I never left the immediate area, so they must have whispered my #. I was wondering why I was waiting so long for cheesesteaks that are cooked in bulk almost (see pics). I waited about 35-40 minutes. That really irritated me! The menu is very basic with cheesesteak, 3 cheese options, onions/ hot longs/cherry peppers/mushrooms. We ordered 2 cheesesteaks, both with cooper sharp cheese/onions, 1 with long hots/mushrooms, the other with cherry peppers. The bread is crusty with sesame seeds. I've never had a cheesesteak with this bread so wasn't sure I'd like it. It's not overly cheesy and we both loved our cheesesteaks. Initially, I thought it was pricey, $42 for 2 cheesesteaks and one water. But after opening, they were huge, filled with meat and delicious! We even had leftovers (which btw were not soggy thanks to crusty bread and no globs of cheese). There is no place to sit, but if you're in the area, definitely worth a visit. Our new favorite cheesesteaks!

I used to think you couldn't get a decent cheesesteak in Reading Terminal. Uncle Gus just changed that opinion. The sandwich was for my 11 year old son who is a true cheesesteak aficionado. I've taken him to many of the city hot spots. He ranked this in his top 5 with a solid 9 score. I took a taste and I agree. The roll is good and crusty with plenty of meat and cheese. It cracked my top 10 in Philly. That list for me now looks like this: 1. Angelo's 2. John's 3. Del Rossi 4. Cafe Carmela 5. Woodrow's 6. Oh Brother 7. Philip's 8. Uncle Gus 9. Max's 10. Gooey Louies

I just did not like the taste of this cheesesteak. Neither did my husband. I wouldn't recommend it. I wouldn't go back. In fairness, locals were there ordering. The sub was huge. The bread was interesting. It just wasn't for me.

Cheesesteak itself was incredible, I liked the addition of the long hots. Definitely on the pricier end for a cheesesteak if you get the ad on toppings ($2) each. I only got 2 toppings & my cheesesteak ended up being $23 in total. I came on a busy Saturday (both Pax Unplugged convention & Philly Marathon happening in the same weekend) so lines were insanely packed. We had to stand behind a yellow line. I'd recommending not going during a busy period. Took me about 20 min to get my order, other than that, quality of the food was high!
