Busy Beverly Boulevard Deli Uncle Paulie’s to Open in Studio City Next - Eater LA

"East Coast-styled Italian Deli Uncle Paulie’s is ready for a hat trick, having locked down a third location around Los Angeles. This time the streetwear-famous shop, known for its robust celebrity clientele and its sandwiches, will open in Studio City, just south of Ventura Boulevard. The new Uncle Paulie’s Deli takes over for the closed Pagliacci’s New York Pizzeria at 3990 Vantage Avenue, just west of Laurel Canyon Boulevard in perhaps the busiest stretch in the whole neighborhood. The small side street space with the faded red awning measures only some 900 square feet, owner Paul James tells Eater, but will require a relatively robust build-out to bring things up to speed. Ideally that would mean an opening sometime this summer for James and co-founder/partner/designer Jon Buscemi. Despite an uncertain opening date, the shop will offer the same takeaway options and merch as the stores on Beverly Boulevard and in Downtown LA, but with lots of outdoor seating given they’re on the quiet side of the boulevard. As for the menu, Uncle Paulie’s trades in classic East Coast-style deli sandwiches with an Italian bent, from the layered cold cuts of the simple Italian to an artichoke caprese option and a meatball parm sub. The restaurant also offers lesser-seen kaiser roll breakfast sandwiches with scrambled eggs, a bodega staple in New York City and New Jersey. James says this Studio City space will most likely offer a heartier menu of salads and quick takeaway options, given the amount of office buildings and single-family homes in the immediate vicinity. Again, there’s no formal timing for the opening just yet, but expect a Studio City arrival for Uncle Paulie’s sometime this summer." - Farley Elliott

Google
My spicy Italian sandwich was so good!! Really hit the spot right after a Fryman Canyon walk.

Google
Have heard about this spot for a while and tried it today. Sandwich was perfect, prickly pear lemonade was delicious. Service was fast and friendly. Sarah helped me choose my sandwich and was so sweet. There’s a nice patio too.

Google
I come here for the meatball parm! It’s my favorite besides my own kitchen!!

Google
The Italian sandwich was good, need more red wine vinegar. The meatball sub was a real let down. 4 small meat balls in the entire sandwich at 18.00. Small sprinkle of cheese. Meatballs were dry and tasted like they were left out under heat lamp. Sauce wasn’t that great for the meatball. Super disappointed 😔

Update to the review: Great response from the owner who is engaged in correcting the situation. Baguette for the bread was super chewy and hard to bite through. Customer service was terrible. Seemed like they didn't even start my online order that was placed 20 minutes before I got there, then was told it would be another 5 minutes. I waited, then asked about my order again and the person at the register looked at me as if she never saw me before then said it would be another 5 minutes. $50+ for two sandwiches is ridiculous for the quality and level of customer service you get.

Yelp
Foods amazing The girl taking orders, needs a little more work on her customer service. I honestly wanted to order more but she wasn't very friendly, sad part I really wanted to try their cookies and but nope not with her attitude. I'm good.

Yelp
The place is pretty delicious and worth the wait. If you're in the area and want an affordable bite with a lot of flavor, this would be it. I love trying different sandwiches but can confirm that the bread is delicious, I really like their sides, especially on a hot day. Their lemonades are my favorite. Service is friendly, NOT quick but friendly. It's very casual and honestly I appreciate that. It's very welcoming but seating is super limited. I'd def come back, especially if I'm in the area walking around.

Yelp
Solid sandwiches. Great Italian, roast beef, chicken pesto, etc. will continue to spend our money here! Convenient and cordial staff.

Yelp

Yelp
Amazing little sandwich shop! Many great options! Nice ambiance, ample parking, lots of seating, chill vibes! The portions are very big. The cold brew was delicious. Definitely recommend

Yelp
I absolutely love the sandwiches here! Their breakfast sandwiches are good too, and I love their salads and sides. Prices are fair and I love that they open early. Online order and pick up is breeze. They have a bit of seating, but it also travels very well to go and is packaged well. Great option if you're looking for a casual yet delicious meal in the area!

Yelp
I want to start off and say that the vibe of this place was immaculate, and super chill. The menu was filled with clever names and I did take my time to pick what sounded good and decided to dive in. Unfortunately, the Prosciutto sandwich I decided to split wasn't great. I want to be clear, that making a sandwich like that is difficult because if the meat clumps together it's a chewy mess, and the ratio of arugla to balsamic left me wondering why there only felt like a drizzle of balsamic was added at all. The mozerella, while tasty was in big oval chunks but something felt off about it that I can't quite place. The bread was pretty tasty though, and had a wonderful crunch with a soft inside. Ending on a positive, their fresh squeezed juices were delicious. I tried the blood-orange lemonade and the prickly pear lemonade and both are enough to make me want to grab something to drink here again at the very least. I would be open to trying something else here, but for the price points I expected a little more bang for my buck, you know?

Yelp
What a vibe! Here for the Mary Lou because we love a sweet and savory prosciutto situation. A great Studio City stop and hits every time.

Frances M.

Yelp
Portion sizes are huge and this is easily 2 meals, but the sandwich was just okay. Great for a quick. Located in a great area and parking is plentiful.

Elizabeth S.

Yelp

Yelp
Great local spot. We loved The Uncle sando and the prickly pear lemonade. Nice patio in the back too!

Bhavini P.

Yelp
Yummy sandwich, came in ordered and the food came quick. Good ingredients and drink selection as well

Yelp
Five star all the way. Small single owner chain in LA. I had the Paulies sandwich, amazing. I also got the creamy pasta salad with pickled carrots and olive tapenade. My new favorite sandwich shop. And they have gluten-free, which is amazing because my wife is gluten-free.

Kevin T.

Yelp
BEST SANDWICHES IN TOWN! Amazing handcrafted drinks and the service is excellent! 10/10
google avatar

Sara T.

Yelp
Really tasty but SO OVERPRICED for what you're getting. Barely any substance between the bread. Can't call these subs. Not enough meat or sauce. Dry sandwiches that leave you wanting. Not worth the hype at all.

Yelp
Was looking on Yelp for a sandwich place and this got good reviews so decided to call and do a pick up. We got 4 sandwiches, 2 of which has cheese on the side as a couple are dairy free. It's a quick drive and one parks in front and walks in. When saying my name I was given a bag and made the mistake of not looking at in when given the bag. When I got home my wife looked in the bag and only 3 sandwiches were there. We called up and the good news after looking at the order they said to come and pick up the fourth. When going in the lady behind the counter said "here!" and turned away. No comment, no apology, just "here!" The sandwiches were okay, but due to the attitude of the lady behind the counter my wife would prefer not going again.

Diezavel M.

Yelp
Best sandwiches in studio city and everyone is always so nice and cool there! Check it out! Also has a cute outdoor area to sit in.

Amanda T.

Yelp
The ingredients are fresh, the bread is always on point, and the vibe feels like your neighborhood spot, even if it's your first time. Perfect for a quick lunch!

Yelp
Since Uncle Paulie's Deli opened a location in the valley, it's been a great addition to the neighborhood. Uncle Paulie's Deli is located at the intersection of Ventura Blvd and Vantage Ave here in Studio City directly behind Starbucks. There is plenty of free parking since it's inside one of the biggest and most popular shopping plazas on Ventura Blvd. As for seating, you have the option to sit inside on a high top and there's outdoor seating right in front or in the small back patio. Each time I have gone, I always encounter friendly and welcoming staff. I also try to get a different sandwich on each visit as I often ask for any recommendations. Uncle Paulie's definitely gives off an east coast neighborhood sandwich shop vibe and it is a nice change up if you're wanting to try something new for lunch.

Freddy D.

Yelp
Uncle Paulie's is always a good choice when you want either a breakfast bagel or a cold cut sando! Their selection is wide and full of combos and options. Fresh ingredients, friendly staff, highly recommended.

Yelp
Going the sample one of the many different flavored lemonades and I will drink it with my vodka chicken parm

Yelp
This is a perfect place. I have no complaints. Fresh ingredients. Tastes fresh and incredible and it's clearly gaining popularity around town. I will be back. I'm so happy I walked here!!

Yelp
Super convenient, ducked off from Ventura and Vantage. Love the outdoor seating with options for take away. It was our first time and the service was great. Nice casual experience inside and out. Great for family or just a quick bite.

Yelp
Fresh & authentic Italian sandwiches like NYC. Sara was a super nice, patient and friendly staff member. She helped us explore the menu for our preferences. Loved the veggie option - broccoli rabe + fried eggplant sando, definitely try with the sundried tomato spread. The patio is great to eat & bask in Studio City because you don't want to wait to devour the delicious deli food .

Yelp
First, the food I have tried thus far is very good quality, with above average portions. Prices are on the high side, but the quality makes up for that. Everything appears freshly sliced and prepared. The challenge is when ordering online for take-out. My experience has been very poor. I've had 10 sandwiches, and 8 of them had mistakes wherein they did not pay attention to the modifications. My big ask for to-go orders is simple, dressing on the side. These sandwiches do not travel well when slathered in dressing (I don't know of any that do). In less than 15 minutes, the sandwich is reduced to a soppin' wet and mushy inedible clump of ingredients. I literally take the ingredients out at home and put them in fresh baguette bread I always have on hand. When I eat at the deli, the bread is fabulous and the sandwich flavor and texture is GREAT. Good texture is a critical factor for a great sandwich. The outside patio is simple, but good with communal style bench tables. Additionally, I have paid extra for ingredients that were NOT added, a huge pain on take-out orders. It is difficult, if not impossible to get someone on the phone, hence no human based phone orders or ability to voice a concern, which I have repeatedly tried to do. I hate to give poor reviews without giving a place the chance to make things right first. Lastly, the 'InKind' app is difficult to navigate and does not remember previous orders. Please switch to CHOWNOW. Cheaper for the shop and better customer interface.

Yelp
Got the Carmela via UberEats. Seemed a little dry and smelled odd, but the taste was fine and I finished it. It's a chain, so I know quality can vary from location to location. Several Yelpers thought the food smelled funny. Not comically funny but smelly funny. The macaroni salad was fairly dire. I didn't find this as good as say Firehouse or Jersey Mike's or even Subway. I did want to love it but it was not lovable. And none of these chains holds a candle to a real mom and pop sub place like Santoro's.

Yelp
Love Uncle Paulees in Studio city. I can recommend the Italian plus the customer service is great

Yelp

Yelp
Had been seeing this spot for a while and finally got the chance to stop in with some family for lunch. It's a small sliver of a restaurant, right off the parking lot behind the Bookstar Theatre Barnes & Noble and next door to Starbucks. Inside is clean and decently airy. There's limited seating inside with only a handful stools along the window. The outdoor covered patio is a nice vibe. There's a single unisex bathroom for use. The staff were nice and accommodating. We ordered The Gloria and The American, and added a side of pesto pasta salad and a bag of chips. We waited a decent amount of time to get out and our order total was pretty pricey. That being said, everything tasted good and we were full after only eating half of our sandos. The basil pesto pasta had a ton of fragrant basil flavor which I loved. If you can't find free parking in the lot behind the shop, look for street parking.

Josh M.

Yelp
Chicken Caesar was amazing. Easy parking, nice ambience, quick service, and great overall vibe.

Bryan K.

Yelp
TLDR: 4/5 - Overall its an enjoyable eat in a nice place of the area for a quick grab and go sandwich...just not at a budget-friendly price. I frequent this block a lot so when I saw that this replaced the old pizza joint I was already curious. Ordered: The Pauline: 4/5 Off the bat, it is a lot smaller width-wise than I thought it would be. I guess I'm use to "viral food" proportions or an obscene bread-to-meat ratio but this was neither of those things. In fact, it had a great bread-to-meat ratio, with it being a decent amount of slices. A breath of fresh air for sure. Overall it made consuming safe for public viewing as nothing was falling out or having to overly stretch your mouth. It was also a good footlong length The flavors in this were subtle but you can tell were fresh and nicely paired together. Its not reinventing the wheel which I think is a good intro if you want something simplistic yet familiar. I didn't think I'd get full off this and I wasn't but it was a good "I'm satisfied wo being stuffed" feeling which is optimal for me. Service: 5/5 I had great service, everyone was willing to help and patient with me. They did forget the woman's order behind me so I guess service can vary. But they hustled to still get hers out before mine. Ambiance: 4/5 Can't sit inside besides a small standing countertop but they do have small tables on the side and patio dining which is lovely. I also love the aesthetic of the joint. Notes: - metered street parking or the 2 hour parking lot right behind the restaurant. - bathroom I think? They have a lot options here including breakfast so I could consider going back!

Tanya

Yelp
Helpful staff with lots of great vegan options to choose from. Nice outdoor coveted seating.
