NYC Restaurant Closings, July 2022 - Eater NY

"Despite chef Irwin Sánchez’s 2022 James Beard award nomination, Under the Volcano closed due to financial reasons. The restaurant struggled with the new post-pandemic landscape." - Caroline Shin

This is a little gem of a world tucked inside the hullabaloo of midtown. The dark wood finish and soft lighting complement the tables built for conversation and one of those well finished bars that anchor a jovial and sophisticated night on the town. We arrived on the early side of a midweek dinner, and washed down a delicious guac and chips with fresh Pilsners. The house tacos and Latin American-inspired fare was off the cuff, as the kids say. Terrific and attentive service throughout our four-hour session. Clean restrooms, buzzing with regulars, and easy walk to trains. It’s the midtown spot.

Great bar in midtown Manhattan, good cocktails and really good appetizers to share with your friends!

Cozy, friendly service, incredible Mexican food. Chef Irwin Sanchez is a master at mixing flavors — the tacos are sublime.

This was the Archive until it closed in the summer. The new owner assumed the previous name from years ago. Can only assume he/she/it was too cheap (using previous sign "Under the Volcano") or mentally lazy to come up with a different name. I had been a regular at the Archive (and loved it) and stopped by to see what was different. Other than an increase from most wines selling at the Archive for $9 to $11 to new prices of $15-16 a glass, nothing is new. I didn't check the food menu but the previous Archive cook was excellent so the new one will have much to live up to. Will I come back to drink wine in an empty bar for $16.00 (the chardonnay), not likely. Everything else is the same except when I came in there was one lonely patron. Sigh! Came across this review that I posted a while ago and read the owner's response. My apologies about the name if, in fact, the old owners repurchased the bar. I was told that the Texas owners of the Ginger Man had purchased the bar. But I did look for a less expense chardonnay than $16.00 a glass and there were none and the bartender was not at all helpful in finding something affordable. Still it's my neighborhood and I wish the bar well, particularly during this pandemic.

The Mexican menu itemed eatery gives you good vibes upon entry. With a welcoming staff and pleasant décor, this establishment is only limited by the size of its kitchen. The food is tasty. The drinks leave something to be desired, tasty but measured. The prices are on par with other establishments in the area.

Chef Irwin is the best. Get everything and anything. It's delicious! The conchinita pibil is a favorite. The bar has excellent cocktails and are well known for their selection of mezcals. Enjoy!

Irwin Sanchez, chef extraordinaire and Nahuatl poet featured in the NY Times rocks the house with his indigenous recipes. Everything is delicious and they have a great selection of mezcal and other spirits. Highly recommended!
