Understudy - Review - Bedford-Stuyvesant - New York - The Infatuation

"In Bed-Stuy, Understudy is a cocktail bar located underneath Bakery By Textbook (known for their name-your-price bread). The Mediterranean-leaning, community-oriented bar will host pop-ups and events—starting off with a Detroit-style pizza pop-up. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Will Hartman

Came to Understudy for the first time on a Friday night with a friend. It’s such great space to unwind, connect, and enjoy a beautiful and deliciously crafted cocktail on the weekend! They have a basement downstairs that is set up like a speakeasy and also have outdoor seating just outside the Bakery. I had the pleasure of sitting at the bar and met Jacob the bartender, who had the BEST personality and knew exactly what he was doing! He made sure we loved our drinks and was always refilling our waters and so attentive to everything. He went above and beyond and made our experience that much more memorable! Amazing service and such a genuinely good time overall. Will be definitely coming back! ✨🫶🏼

Insanely cute spot! I ordered The Dune and would absolutely go back just for that, even though I know I should try something new! You can order delicious food from the bakery upstairs, and the music is at the perfect level to still be able to talk to your friends easily. Staff was friendly, the vibe was legit.

Enter through the bakery and smell the delights being cooked up by Chef DTroit before being whisked downstairs into a little haven of great vibes and perfect pours. Understudy is a moodily lit, cozy lounge that feels like your bougie friend threw a party, and the whole neighborhood was invited. The drinks are ✨ inspired ✨, the service is welcoming, and if you get a slice from chef upstairs? Oof you’re in for a TREAT. Try it for yourself, maybe I’ll see ya there ✌️

After being so excited for a while about a cocktail bar opening up in the neighborhood, I’m happy to say it did not disappoint! I ordered the souk cocktail and a gimlet. Both were well balanced and delicious. Clearly made by someone who knows what they are doing. The pizza was absolutely delicious, and I’m not generally a pizza fan. Highly recommend and so excited for this addition to Ocean Hill

Excellent service and a nice vibe. My biggest issue is the pricing: 1 snack and 4 drinks with a tip was upwards of $100. Let me repeat: 4 drinks and 1 snack for 2 people was $100 with a tip. This is more expensive than some bars in Manhattan, which is distressing given the location of this bar and the demographics of the neighborhood. I do appreciate the offering of Happy Hour Cocktails (I believe 3 drinks and different ciders). I would suggest expanding the happy hour menu or adjusting the pricing of the regular cocktails.

Just went last night, which apparently was their opening. That place was marvelous! A cute little space underneath a bakery! Very much an IYKYK kinda spot. The cocktails were great, and the place was full, but didn't seem overly crowded. The music was good, just loud enough to drown out your neighbors conversation, but still easy to talk to the person you came with. They have pizza and some baked goods, which we didn't try, but smelled great. Overall, a really neat place, and we'll definitely be back.

Came with my partner for the first time and we both loved it! The service is great & the cocktails are made with real love and finesse. The mood and vibes created were clearly created with so much thoughtfulness.

Checked out Understudy Community Cocktails, and it did not disappoint. The space is beautifully designed—modern but cozy, with an inviting atmosphere that makes you want to settle in for a while. The music setup is on point too—great speakers that really let the sound fill the room without being overpowering. The drinks were just as impressive. The Dune, a North African-inspired margarita with ripe fig and tequila, was a standout—smooth, slightly sweet, and perfectly balanced. Also had The Santorini, a shareable Mai Tai, which hit all the right tropical notes without being too sweet. Both were well-executed and thoughtfully crafted. On top of that, the Detroit-style pizza was excellent—crispy edges, fluffy dough, and just the right amount of toppings. Definitely a perfect pairing with the cocktails. Overall, this spot has everything you’d want—great cocktails, great food, and a vibe that makes you want to stay a while. Definitely worth a visit.

Yelp
A speakeasy under a Detroit pizza spot in NYC... fascinating. My friend told me about them, and it was a day they had $12... I was like shoot why not?! We arrived and walked in. And we had to tell the person behind the register we wanted to go downstairs... you have to say something, because they won't say anything otherwise lolol. Such a secret! They ask for a name, and then you can hang out while waiting... in my experience, the wait wasn't long. Feel free to grab a slice while waiting! Once I got downstairs I was blown away. The $12 summer cocktail deal is great, and they have everything from mezcal cocktails to espresso martinis to mocktails. The music was on point too. I absolutely loved the vibe and I don't want to give too many details away, because you just need to see it for yourself. I forget the name of the woman who took care of us directly, but I do remember Jacob and he was fantastic. Also, I kinda felt wrong having Detroit style pizza in NY, but guess what!! It wasn't bad.

Yelp
I love this new addition to the neighborhood. This cocktail bar is a hidden gem...literally it is a speakeasy located in the cellar of bakery / café. Also did I mention they are open until 2 am and you can order pizza from the bar, which is made upstairs by their chef. Now for the cocktails, the bar tender Jacob is amazing. He knows a well crafted cocktail and you can tell he's really passionate about giving you an experience more than just a drink. With the amazing cocktails and moody decor you feel like you're at home with your friends. The space is not large but it's the perfect size to get a chill vibe and enjoy drinks with friends. I almost want to gatekeep the place for myself and friends but I truly want everyone to come out and support this neighborhood business so they can stick around for a long time, especially with a lot of the bars and lounges closing in Bedstuy as of lately. Also they have a special going now until I believe Labor Day where the cocktails are $12 all night. Now that is a steal. You can't go wrong with cocktails and pizza.

Yelp
Amazing all around. Each drink was thoughtful, unique, and tasty. The staff were all so welcoming, which helped the entire experience feel special. All of this and I haven't even mentioned the great music providing the perfect ambiance! Will definitely bring more friends here in the future!
