"This North Texas brewery opened up shop in the Square, bringing with it an array of its beers on tap, from lagers to IPAs, along with a menu of brewery-friendly foods. The usual suspects (pizza, burgers, fish and chips) are here, along with some modern options like a vegetarian-friendly Mediterranean plate of veggies served with babaganoush and carrot hummus, a vegan falafel burger, and Korean shrimp tacos. "Plano’s Union Bear is known for an alcoholic beverage of a different kind: beer. But despite its sudsy roots, this West Coast-style beer hall also serves not one, but two of the best margarita variations in town. The Frozen Caddy, served in a branded snifter with a dusting of chunky salt and a lime wheel, is perhaps the best known. Unlike many other variations on the classic drink, Union Bear’s take includes lemon juice in addition to lime. The base of Casamigos blanco is supplemented by both types of citrus, as well as agave syrup and Grand Marnier. Union Bear’s other famous margarita variation, a nod to the restaurant’s California roots, is served on the rocks. While most of the ingredients are the same as its frozen sibling, the Baja Bear swaps the Casamigos blanco for Casamigos añejo, which is aged for 14 months in American oak barrels. The switch gives the drink an added sophistication, maximized by the complex orange notes of the Grand Marnier. Toss it back alongside a plate of Texas smothered fries, featuring roasted poblano queso, braised short ribs, and pickled jalapeno." - Vox Creative

"I reported that Plano’s newest spot for a pint of craft beer and pub fare has officially made its debut: Union Bear Brewing, located at The Boardwalk in Granite Park (5880 State Highway 121). The brewery occupies 7,250 square feet indoors and boasts a 3,000-square-foot patio with popular bar games like bocce ball and shuffleboard and its own putting hole for golfers. The brand revives the Union Bear that once served brews and pizzas in West Village—chef Matt Spillers sold the brewery’s brand to 33 Restaurant Group after the Uptown location shuttered in 2014—and 33 Restaurant Group (which operates Taverna Rossa in Plano, Cadillac Pizza Pub in McKinney, and Heritage Pizza and Taproom in The Colony) now runs the spot. Chef Sean Sanders will serve fairly standard pub fare including sliders, a fried chicken sandwich, flatbreads, and a patty melt, while Union Bear’s own brews (a blonde ale, white IPA, and stout) will be available at the bar alongside additional beers on tap, whiskeys, and wines; the restaurant is open for dinner service only starting at 4 p.m., with lunch service beginning January 8 at 11 a.m." - Amy McCarthy
