18 Irresistible Pancakes Around Boston

"The Breakfast Club, a throwback ’80s diner, has an appropriately huge diner-style menu. Pancakes — as well as French toast and Belgian waffles — come with a choice of about 10 toppings, such as chunky monkey (bananas, chocolate chips, walnuts, and caramel sauce) and strawberry pecan. For an additional charge, diners can sub in gluten-free or whole-wheat pancakes." - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

Refuge Cafe Has Closed for Real This Time | Eater Boston

"Once known for slinging lattes and breakfast sandwiches, this small Allston cafe has definitively closed: a “closed” sign on the front door, a locked entry, and no employees or customers inside confirm the shutdown. The closure follows earlier rumors in fall 2016 that it intended to close (rumors it later reversed), and a recent run of increasingly bizarre, first-person Facebook posts in which the cafe seemed to suggest sentience and warned of a machine-led, AI-powered human demise. While those posts fueled speculation that the shutdown might be a stunt, the physical evidence points to a genuine closure." - Terrence Doyle

I came here on early Sunday morning while waiting to get a tattoo across the street. It was very busy which is to be expected, but the dining room is a bit chaotic and small and it’s VERY loud. I had to keep my airpods in the whole time. It took about 30ish minutes for my food which is fair given the rush. The omelette with home fries and toast was really good. I would come back, maybe not on a weekend.

Google
Tasty spot for breakfast, nothing too special. Some interesting menu items but unfortunately not outstanding preparation. We tried the Bulgogi Benedict and the Lemon Ricotta Pancakes, which were each tasty though text was a hair in my pancake that was distinctly not mine (see video). Inside is loud and crowded. The server was not too friendly and was also a severe mumbler so we really had no idea what she was saying. Probably wouldn’t go back given the bounty of options in the area.

Our party of 5 celebrated a birthday here and had a wonderful time. 🎂 We enjoyed all the dishes and drinks that we tried. Everything was delicious.

Excellent breakfast/brunch fare at reasonable prices. Friendly attentive service. The place was empty when I walked in at 10 AM, but grew more crowded over time, confirming other reviewers' comments about noise. Ideal dining off-peak!

Google
Cute dine in Breakfast spot! The food was delicious, I can’t remember the name of my dish but the drink was called Pistachio Matcha. It tasted a little weird but besides that everything else was good and delicious. The place is a perfect study spot as well.

Google
Great food, wonderful staff! Coconut mango pancakes were loved by my one year old❤️ pistachio cold foam latte is all that it says and more. Make time for this place if you are visiting.

Google
A true perfect hybrid of classic American diner fare and Korean variety, as bizarre as that might sound! The chef clearly cares about both quality and the vibe, with unusually ‘normal’ (as in non-hostile) service, excellent coffee and beverages. While there’s a strong Korean influence, @union really strikes a great balance in its wide range of menu items. Unique and in my experiences there, delightful.

Google
It was super quiet when we came in around 9ish, got to sit where we wanted. Grabbed a mimosa bucket at $30, better than expected. Ordered our food and by the time we got it, completely cold. It started to get busy as we were eating and by the time we were done we waited another 15mins for the tab. Cute place but eh.

Yelp
Just happened to find this place at last minute! We lucked up!! Breakfast was amazing and staff were very friendly!!!

Yelp
After walking by this place for the past two years, we finally tried it out for breakfast. The outside is not much to look at, but the inside was pleasantly nice and spacious. It's not huge, but there's definitely more room than I had originally guessed. The food was yummy. Typical breakfast food with some specials. I love when restaurants have specials. Keeps things interesting and not boring. Although the food was yummy, I do feel like it was slightly overpriced. $4 for a side of bacon that only came with TWO measly pieces?! Not cool. They also didn't have a children's menu which was a little disappointing. Despite these two "negatives", I'd still recommend this place and definitely come back. The service was also good. We weren't there on a week end, so not much was happening. Would like to see if the service quantity is maintained when the restaurant has more than 10 people in it.

Yelp
This is my favorite brunch place of all time and I bring my friends here all the time. I've honestly lost track of how many times I've been here now. One of my favorite drinks on their menu is their lavender London fog, which they serve in the cold seasons of the year. I also like their omelets and pancakes and some of their specials. I have never had trouble finding seating here as it is a pretty big space and the staff have always been very friendly!

Yelp
Pretty good brunch place with the classics as well as a few re-imagined items. Our table shared the bulgogi benedict, cajun hash, and the wine rosemary french toast. I was pleased with all of our choices and the portions were quite good. Their french toasts are probably their most pretty and interesting options - the wine rosemary one had brie in between the toast! I also got the pistachio match a latte which didn't have any detectable pistachio flavor at all, but was still good matcha. The food did come out a bit slow. Decor/ambience inside is nothing amazing.

Yelp
My favorite brunch place in Boston! The servers are always so nice and their iced chai latte is amazing! I've enjoyed their lemon pancakes, chicken Santa Fe, and chicken & waffles during my many visits.

Yelp
Spacious seating area & nice service. The food does take a little longer than average to come out. But order a drink & bring a friend to stay entertained. Everything we had was good. We got hashbrowns, and they did not disappoint; very crispy. The bulgogi marinade was just good enough to be considered bulgogi. Better than the trader joes bulgogi marinade. The chorizo can be a little spicy if you can't handle a little heat.
google avatar

Mindy P.

Yelp
I've only ordered takeout and delivery here, so I can't speak on the service, but their hash napoleon is my favorite! You know how hash browns get soggy on the way to you when they're picked up for delivery? Well, for some reason, their hash browns stay extra crispy and they're also very tasty! The corn beef to potato ratio is perfect as well. Can't say they're a good value though because food here is expensive. I have to have a good excuse to order from here when I do!

Yelp
Really loved this place over the years, but fell a little short this past visit. The French toast was bland and didn't come with real maple syrup included for a fairly high price. Service was fast and friendly, but overall price was high for the quality. 2 small pieces of bacon for a side. Generally better luck with savory items in the past
google avatar

Yelp
Union is a classic brunch spot in Allston. They have a wide variety of savory and sweet brunch foods, and several delicious sandwich options. Today a friend and I walked in at 1:30pm and got seated immediately. We ordered the hash napoleon and the berries and ricotta French toast. The hash napoleon was pretty standard, the and hash was not too remarkable. The berries and ricotta French toast though, was DELICIOUS! I loved the whipped ricotta topping and the layer of berry ricotta cream in the middle. I would order that again. Service was okay, I know we did not dine during peak hours, but the waiter forgot to give us our check at the end of our meal. It seemed like other folks were getting their checks / water filled but the waiter didn't seem to get to where we were sitting. Otherwise a great experience

Yelp
The atmosphere is underwhelming and not particularly welcoming. Several of the chairs are wobbly and felt like they would break if we leaned back. The staff was friendly and there weren't too many patrons in the restaurant on a Monday around lunchtime, but food service was pretty slow. The drinks were made quickly though and they were fine. It was odd that the cafe drinks were made without sweetener. Usually a London Fog has at least a little simple syrup in it. Not this one. The matcha was similarly unsweetened. Overall the bulgogi Benedict was the best thing on the table. The kimchi bulgogi quesadilla was mid. Needed more bulgogi and kimchi and less pico, especially since the pico was served on the side. The rosemary French toast was also very good. The sweet fruit and the Brie went well together, but it needed way more of the special syrup. I didn't care for it as much with regular (not pure maple) syrup. The meal was like $78 for 3 of us for three entrees and 3 beverages. Outrageously expensive for what we got. The food was good, but it wasn't $95 good.

Yelp
Woefully expensive, takes forever to get your order, and forget if you tried to use a delivery app

Yelp
I just had to write an updated review for @Union because I found myself visiting it again recently and I feel like the food has gotten so much better. Maybe it was the special menu item or that specific day, but I remember why I used to always visit @Union and enjoyed the food. That day we ordered fluffy pancakes and bulgogi benedict with freshly squeezed orange juice. The fluffy pancakes were indeed very fluffy, I love the mascarpone cream that came with it. The bulgogi benedict was delicious, it came with a good amount of meat, eggs were runny when cut into, flavors were all there. Both dishes were 10/10. The only bad part about this meal, or any time visiting @Union would be the very long wait for our food. We waited over 35 minutes for our food after placing the order with our server. We devoured the entire thing within minutes though.

Yelp
Decided to try @Union for breakfast yesterday and were blown away. Run, don't walk to @Union for the Bulgogi Benedict - a flavor combination I never would have thought to combine, but I am SO glad they did. Try it, trust me! 10/10. My husband had a basic breakfast with eggs, bacon, hasbrowns and toast - stated everything was spot on. Looking forward to our next Trip to Boston already, and @Union will for sure be our first breakfast stop. Absolutely in love with this restaurant!

Yelp
Delicious hashbrowns! Great customer service, the waitress was very attentive to our table.

Yelp
Food was great, enjoyed the homefries, turkey sausage and banana pancakes!!! Service was prompt and prefessional as well.

Yelp
Really enjoyed my experience here! They were busy but we were seated quickly! The lattes were surprisingly delicious and flavorful. Quick service too! I had the Mediterranean eggs and they were very good!

Yelp
I was looking for a brunch spot that served alcohol with our meal. @union checked all the boxes and was an awesome surprise for everyone in my group. I started brunch with the Drunken Pumpkin Latte, which was a great way to kick off the meal. However, the highlight of the brunch was the Bulgogi Benedict. I know, I know, you are saying to yourself that I must have had one too many of those Drunken Pumpkin Lattes! Yep, you heard right - Bulgogi Benedict. This was an amazing dish with an English muffin and poached egg topped with Korean Beef Bulgogi and hollandaise sauce. All of the flavors worked! Pro tip - skip the breakfast potatoes. They were not worth the calories. I was worried that it would be crowded at 10 am, but the colleges were still on Christmas break, so we lucked out with a parking spot on the street right in front of the restaurant and immediate seating. I wish that a restaurant like @union can be found everywhere I travel!

Yelp
This was a stellar brunch on a Friday morning. The Egg Bomb was an incredible amount of food for eleven dollars. We decided to eat it open faced to avoid a mess. The ability to opt for an everything bagel was a nice touch. The Wine Rosemary French Toast was light with a hint of sweetness. The best part was that the syrup wasn't overly sweet. @Union has a coffee shop vibe with a brunch style spread.

Erika A.

Yelp
Food was good, I had the chocolate chip pancakes and eggs with an iced lavender matcha latte (star of the show) to drink . Service was decent.
google avatar

Audrey L.

Yelp
Mask are required Cocktails are served at this location for breakfast. The chicken and waffles were so good, the chicken was well seasoned and could've been eaten alone. It was perfect with the waffle and syrup. The banana and cinnamon French toast was perfect also. It was crunchy around the edges and a combo of soft and a bit of crunch towards the middle. This was really good. The hast brown didn't taste like it had any seasoning and it was very crunchy, a bit too much for my liking and I should've asked for onions and peppers to be cooked with it. Otherwise, this place was really good, parking wasn't an issue, staff was great and drinks were good as well.
google avatar

Olivia B.

Yelp
Cute brunch spot. I've been here several times. The food is reasonably priced for Boston. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. There is hand sanitizer available at the front and all staff is wearing masks. They have a specials menu that changes throughout the year. I've always enjoyed trying the fun new items on the specials menu! The food sometimes takes a bit to come out but the staff is always very nice. The food is good with generous portion sizes as well.
google avatar

Pete W.

Yelp
Pretty good food, delicious pancakes. Service was good. Not busy at 2pm on a Sunday!!
google avatar

Judie K.

Yelp
@Union is a spot that offers typical and unique brunch options to choose from. They sometimes have specials to try from. In summary, their brunch is good but honestly not amazing or mind blowing compared to a few other brunch spots. However, it is a spot with "safe" brunch choices you can't go wrong with. I only really enjoyed their Nutella French toast. Everything else was decently good (with the exception that the lemon blueberry pancakes were a tad dry). When we went, there was a big group of us, so props to the service for being still quick!
google avatar

Allegra P.

Yelp
Great little spot to meet up with friends at. We went about 1:00 with a group of five and we were seated within 10 minutes on a Sunday. The prices are fair and I really enjoyed my crispy chicken on the Caesar salad. The crispy chicken really hit that fried chicken spot I had been craving lately.
google avatar

Yelp
Came here for Father's Day. We arrived early and so were able to get a table easily, but by the time we left a line was forming. They had a lot of really interesting breakfast options. I had to try the wine and rosemary french toast because it was so unique. It's a pretty good savory dish, but not what I was feeling for breakfast, so I traded for my daughter's crunchy french toast which was delicious. Overall, I was pleased and would love to go back and try some of the other items on the menu (Dolce De Leche Waffle--yes, please!) Service was decent, but not particularly engaging. The atmosphere is very open and bright--a good morning vibe.
google avatar

Yelp
Good food and great service. The lox Benedict tastes better without the spinach. Potatoes were awesome.
google avatar

Patrick S.

Yelp
Solid place for brunch in Allston. We had the burrata french toast and tomato & basil omelette. Both were right sized portion and quite fulfilling for an early afternoon. I got the pistachio latte which was a bit too sweet for me so maybe I tried something else next time. Good location and casual ambiance. Perfect for catching up with friends. Highly recommended!

Yelp
** safety concern** We had brunch at Union today. We were seated outside. Thankfully my fiancé moved and sat next to me so we were "same siding" it. Due to the strong winds and improper securing, the umbrella flew off smashed into the seat opposite us in addition to the ground, knocking our drinks over onto the table and us. Our table was never cleaned, our safety concern was met with poor responses from staff about being "busy that day". There was no attempt made afterward to properly secure remaining umbrellas which showed the extent of indifference staff had towards complaints. This could have seriously injured a child/ adult or anyone passing by. Also, they never offered to reimburse our spilled drinks which should have been the minimum offered in such circumstances. Disappointing experience.
google avatar

Vivi F.

Yelp
Fun fresh food! We can't wait to go back and try more items. Service was fast and we didn't have to wait long for a table despite the Sunday morning brunch rush
google avatar

Felicia L.

Yelp
@Union is definitely the perfect place for brunch! The price was pretty reasonable for the generous portions and ordering delivery was very easy too. I also love how big their menu is and they definitely have some things that are pretty unique. I ordered the crunchy french toast, which also came along with some sliced bananas. It was really good, although a tiny bit dry for some parts. That wasn't really a problem for me though, so I would recommend the french toast if you haven't tried it! Union satisfied my brunch cravings and I will for sure order again to try other things on their menu. I couldn't even remember when the last time I had brunch was, due to the pandemic! But Union did the job and I was very impressed. I would say that Union is not exactly too different from a generic brunch place, but their food is very filling and I would say that you get what you're paying for. Trying Union for the first time was a good call so definitely try it out if you're in the area!
google avatar

Yelp
Went twice on our trip to Boston. The Benedict's are to die for and they certainly know how to make pancakes. Service was most excellent. Cozy inside, but also a nice sidewalk patio for anyone who wants to enjoy the weather. We will be returning.
google avatar

Justina B.

Yelp
A very solid option for the first half of your day. My order: chicken and waffles. Note: I ordered on uber eats, and had it delivered. Moderate lag time between order preparedness and arrival. The food was delicious. I definitely was not expecting the chicken piece to be SO BIG. You could definitely get two meals out of it. The waffle was good considering it was delivery. The packaging was smart, with the three little cups of toppings- butter, bbq, and syrup. The spicy sauce was definitely packing a kick. I imagine this is really spectacular when fresh out of the kitchen. I do want to note that they do not have all-day hours. This is for mornings/ early afternoons. (Honestly a bummer, because I can imagine their chicken and waffles as the perfect food for after a night out). When the pandemic is over, i will definitely return to this place for dining in. I happily recommend Union if you're within 20 miles of it.
google avatar

Dan F.

Yelp
Really good food and service. They had chai latte and good coffee. Scrambled eggs and sausage good as was my Philly cheese steak omelet home fries a highlight as well cooked and spiced
google avatar

Ellie B.

Yelp
my friend and i got the fluffy pancakes and florentine eggs benedict. both were pretty good! i also got an iced latte and was able to choose from several flavors and milk options. we went on a rainy saturday morning and were seated quickly, but it did get pretty busy. the staff did seem a little disorganized and we had multiple different people waiting on us, but everyone was very friendly. not an amazing brunch spot, but i would come back!
google avatar

Megan L.

Yelp
The food and ambiance was great! Our waitress was friendly. Did not wait too long for a table, but it would be worth the wait.
google avatar

Journey C.

Yelp
I tried @Union brunch for the first time this past Sunday. We arrived around 11AM and had to wait for about 15-20 minutes. My friend ordered the Crispy Chicken Burger and I got the Bulgogi Burrito (on their specials menu) and a Hazelnut Latte. The Crispy Chicken Burger was served with some fries on the side. Both the chicken and the fries seemed to be fried with tempura batter, so the crunch was not what I was expecting. The chicken itself lacked flavor and tasted bland. The Bulgogi Burrito came with a side of kimchi mayo or something. I was disappointed that it didn't come with a side of home fries based on the price. The burrito itself was good, but the side sauce lacked flavor. Overall, it was a good option to try on a busy Sunday morning around brunch time, however I left a bit underwhelmed.
google avatar

Angela G.

Yelp
I will always come back for more. They never fail me as a great brunch place. You can call to reserve a spot in line!
google avatar

Larry L.

Yelp
This building is historical, the food is legendary Boston Victuals. Great Chowda, Fresh Scrod, which is actually many different white fish. Liberty and Freedom plans were hatched upstairs in this very building. Anybody who is anybody in Boston and national history has their picture on a wall. Authentic Boston at its best.
google avatar

Samantha C.

Yelp
I've been here a few times and their breakfasts are always delicious and satisfying. Will definitely continue to return!
google avatar

Krista C.

Yelp
Food was good after not getting in last time. Got the chorizo Benedict and chocolate chip pancakes. Food was a 4/5, service maybe 3/5. There were little people there on a Sunday at 2 and the service was still pretty slow. Definitely would go back again though.
google avatar

Michelle H.

Yelp
Came here on a whim during Wednesday morning with a friend while I was in the area. It wasn't busy at all and we were seated immediately. Vaccination card gets checked at the door. Street parking was easy to find, but I'm sure it gets more difficult as the day progresses. - Lobster Benedict ($19): definitely recommend trying this! There's a decent amount of lobster and the home fries were perfectly crunchy. - Nutella stuffed French toast ($15): had a bite of my friend's and if you like sweet breakfast, this is a winner. The fruit was very fresh and sweet! Although it wasn't busy, the service was super slow. Our waiter pretty much disappeared after dropping off our food and we needed small things like ketchup, refills on the water, and napkins. I would love to come back and check out their other menu options!
google avatar

Karen W.

Yelp
There's always so many people at Union, but I found out that the best time to go on a Saturday is before 11am! Guaranteed seating within 5 min. I've ordered the Lobster Benedict and the Smoked Salmon Omelette. They're both pretty filling meals and there's a good proportion of food on the plate. Although the things I've ordered seem very simple to make, it does take a long time for the food to come out. The last time my friend and I went, we waited for around 20 to 30 minutes. I wonder if it's the chef or the server. Besides that, I do enjoy my overall experience @UNION and would definitely come back to try the rest of the things they have on their menu! I know they have bottomless organic coffee and freshly squeezed orange juice that I would give a try next time.
google avatar

Andrew L.

Yelp
The go to place for coffee and breakfast in Allston. Expect a wait during weekends. Go online and signin to get priority seating. The variation of corn beef hash or hash brown is welcoming, as well as some sweeter bfast items such as rosemary pancakes.

Michael D.

Yelp
Food here was super delicious! Came in on a Saturday morning around 12:30 for brunch and the restaurant was full. We waited about 10 minutes for a table for a party of three which wasn't bad at all. Ambiance was nothing extraordinary- just a basic brunch restaurant. Majority of the guests seemed to be younger college students which makes sense considering the area. We each started with a coffee (dirty chai latte, tiramisu latte, and a mocha latte) but none of them were that great. Honestly all 3 flavors tasted the same. For food we got the steak and eggs, crunchy French toast, hash, and chorizo eggs Benedict. All of it was really delicious and the price point was nothing crazy at all. Would definitely come back here again.
google avatar

Cooper S.

Yelp
The food was excellent, the house brewed coffee was a nice touch as well. Good service and a nice vibe
google avatar

Vickey B.

Yelp
Really sad that what started as a possible good idea went terribly wrong due to poor service. Food was ok, but try to avoid mini dictator server Bosska! No silverware, no stirs for our tea @ first and after asking her 2 - 3 times she threw them on the table! Very little honey in the tea & to top it off she advised me to "hurry up!' With my meal although other patrons she was serving were taking before us their time with their meal. No restaurant is worth this abuse find a better place even if u need to walk 20 miles! Mission accomplished we won't be back.
google avatar

Dinesh G.

Yelp
This place is popular among college students and right in Harvard avenue. Nice brunch place, pancakes, French toasts are really delicious. No reservations taken, the staffs are so friendly. You can always call the restaurant and check how crowded the restaurant is. The French toast is my personal favorite of mine, if you're a sugar tooth, pls try their French toast. They are loaded with fresh strawberries and Nutella.
google avatar

Abigail S.

Yelp
I love the pancakes, eggs benedict, lattes, home fries! This spot is hard to get a seat at on the weekends but it's very goooood
