Union on Knox, generally, is a decent (albeit pricey) apartment complex. I've lived here since they opened, and haven't personally had major issues. I live in a studio, so I cannot speak to roommate conditions whatsoever.
Maintenance (3.7/5):
I've had great experiences with maintenance: in general, they've come and repaired things very quickly, but there have been some issues where they've been less than proactive (bug problem, paint issues, water temperature, etc). I did have an issue in early 2024 with a relatively creepy maintenance worker that made me feel very unsafe, but I have not seen him anywhere in the building since. Overall, they're good, but not great.
Appliances (4/5):
Overall all of the appliances work well, but the water temperature is less than optimal and hot water runs out very quickly. However, this may just be an issue with my unit, as none of my friends in the building have experienced issues.
Noise and security (5/5):
The building is very quiet, and there is a security guard at night. I have had no issues here.
Proximity to campus (5/5):
The proximity to campus and nearby restaurants is the best part about Union. It's very far from north campus buildings (Engineering, comp sci), but very close to most of the south campus classes. Additionally, it is a 5 minute walk from south campus dining hall and Mowatt lane parking garage, which is great if you don't want to pay the insane parking costs at Union.
Move out, office staff, and communication (1/5):
I am only speaking to the experience of one of my friends, but communication with the office has been awful. Random charges are added upon move out, and the office is very unwilling to reduce charges unless you go to Greystar, and even then, it is an uphill climb. Office staff are very rude, and I would HIGHLY recommend getting everything in writing. If it's not in writing, it's not going to end up happening.
Pricing (4/5):
Union is EXPENSIVE. However, they are pretty generous with rent concessions and you can pretty easily negotiate them down. I ended up getting $300 off for both years that I've lived here, which seems pretty decent to me.
Overall (4/5):
Union isn't a bad apartment complex by any means, and I would consider it to be one of the better complexes around. It has its issues (like many of the other apartments), but I don't think it's a bad place to live. Do keep in mind, though, that union gives out rewards to those that leave a five star review. These reviews skew the rating higher, and are not necessarily reflective of the actual experience living here. I would live here again next year if I weren't graduating, and if I were transferring to the school with little knowledge, I would consider union to be a safe bet.
