Pizza Union Review - Dalston - London - The Infatuation

"In a city that’s saturated with all kinds of pizza options, be it crispy, soggy, palm or bin-lid sized, the Pizza Union chain is somehow managing to do something that’s quite unique: very fast, very cheap and very decent pizza. Pizza Union serves a purpose and it’s absolutely brilliant at it. It's an in and out place, and it’s fast food at its finest. We walked in and ordered a custom pizza with ’nduja, rocket and roasted peppers with a frozen margarita to go with it. Did we mention they have a frozen margarita slushy machine? This came to a tenner and we were eating four minutes later, tops. The basic margherita is four pounds, which is incredible value. Plus, the pizza is actually good. It’s made in a wood fire oven and it’s crispy and it’s tomatoey. It’s better than other pizza that well, claim to be better. If you’re in need of a quick and cheap fix but don’t want to feel regret twenty minutes later, this is the place to come." - Jake Missing

The Wharf Is Getting a Late-Night Pizza Option | Eater DC

"Opening Saturday, September 15, I'll have a late-night pizza option at Union Pie, a new carb kiosk at 980 Wharf Street SW from the trio of Brindley brothers (who run the Wharf’s new Union Stage and Jammin’ Java). Union Pie's opening lineup features five Jersey-style pies: whole 12-inch pizzas built for two cost $12–$14 and half portions start at $7. The menu includes a “hot and sweet” topped with sliced hot sopressatta, serrano peppers, San Marzano tomatoes, mozzarella, grated pecorino romano, and honey, plus a white pie and a grilled veggie variety; gluten-free crusts are $2 extra. Its thin-crust recipes were tested at Union Stage and its adjoining tap room and have amassed a fan base among Southwest concertgoers; the small setup sits across from Shake Shack, signage goes up on September 13, and hours and photos are still forthcoming." - Tierney Plumb

Google
The pizza was amazing! I got a full hot sweet which was absolutely amazing! Great blend of spicy and sweet. I got to talk to Jeff who runs it and he was the absolute nicest guy. The service was excellent! Got our food so fast and were able to eat it while looking at the water on the wharf! Highly recommend

Google
I’ve been a loyal fan of Union Pie since the days when the only way to get their pizza was through Union Stage. When the kiosk opened, it was a total game-changer. Their crust is consistently perfect, and the pepperoni is hands-down the best I’ve ever had. Some of my favorite summer memories are sitting by the Wharf floating stage, enjoying live music with friends and family over a hot, fresh whole pepperoni pie. The ingredients are always fresh, the pizzas are made to order, and the service is quick. Union Pie never disappoints.

Google
Shockingly bad service with a side of decent pizza in a pinch. Food is solid, but disregard the closing time of 10pm. The employee had the audacity to aggressively scold us for trying to ask for plates and napkins when they were trying to close. Please note it was 8pm (2 hours before close). Great location with seats in the beer garden next door. For the price, I’d just find another local place with better service

Google
Not a bad deal for a bite to eat on the Wharf. Except they charge $1 to do a half half pie even if they run out of ingredients for a whole. The pizza takes you back bc of the crust which is old school box oven pizza crust. The really cheap kind. Crunchy and dry. But the top is rich. Mumbo chicken very good and fun DC specialty. Hot and sprint is ok. Pepperonis are thin and unique.

James H.

Google
One of the worst pizzas I've ever had. Crust was thin as cardboard; sauce was so greasy that the toppings slid off without assistance. There's no cutlery, and the napkins are so thin that you'll need about 10 for each hand.

Jessica O.

Google
I came here after a concert at The Anthem. It was very convenient and we sat right by the water which was beautiful. The pizza was alright but was overpriced for what you get. The service was very slow and the employees were not very nice. However, one employee gave us a free soda for the wait. Overall, I don’t regret going but I wouldn’t go again.

Google
I love getting this pizza when I’m down at the wharf and don’t want to eat at a sit down restaurant. My favorite is the white pizza! Everyone has been super friendly and the pizza always hits the spot.

Lyla S.

Google
Pizza is perfectly thin and crispy and cheese was delicious. Love the way they do their pepperonis - very crispy. Also love the additional touch of fresh parm.

Pedro B.

Yelp
Decided to grab a quick slice of pizza before hitting a show at The Anthem. It's basically a half a pizza for $9, decent price I suppose for the pricy SW DC Wharf. Plenty of quality cheese and it's super thin crunchy crust, a la Jersey Tavern style Pizza. I'd have it again. It's worth a try
google avatar

Yelp
Living on the wharf, we walked by this little hut every day telling ourselves we needed to try their "Voted Top 5 pizzas in DC" pizza. In so many ways, it just didn't stand up to the hype. My lady had classic pepperoni and I had the sweet hot. Although both were tasty, they were swimming in grease and utterly unmanageable to eat by hand, as one should with pizza. To make matters worse it was square cut, contrary to NY style. Flavor alone: 4 stars Price: 3 stars Construction: 1 star Recommendations, a crispier crust would be fantastic, or somehow allowing for some of the oils to run off or be absorbed away so the crust doesn't return to dough.
google avatar

Daniel R.

Yelp
A fun little pizza takeout counter on the Wharf, one of my favorite areas in dc! The pizza is fine, if not a bit overpriced. The mumbo chicken wasn't as tender as I had hoped, but the gluten free cheese pizza rocked!

Yelp
We arrived extremely at the Wharf for a dinner reservation so we decided to stop at Union Pie to order the white pizza to share as a pre-dinner snack and I'm glad we did. It was hot, fresh & delicious. It was big enough for three of us to share as a quick snack. Be alert that there a lot of pigeons hanging around there so watch where you sit and cover your food.

Larry B.

Yelp
Pizza was very good and the guys made sure we had exactly what we wanted. Fully recommend you grab a pizza and walk down the open area by the water and enjoy a sunset.
google avatar

Alishia H.

Yelp
So many places to eat at the Wharf, but Union Pie hits the spot and Francis IS THE MAN! On top of delicious pizza, the quick and friendly service tops it off. Will be back after eating over priced, mediocre food at The Wharf.
google avatar

Christi T.

Yelp
Fast food pizza but better. I got screwed and came on a Mother's Day and Sabrina carpenter concert. So it was crazy packed
google avatar

Lauren G.

Yelp
Super quick service and delicious pizza after a long day exploring the city! Located right on the Wharf, it's convenient as well.
google avatar

Yelp
If you're a bar pie fan, you'll like Union Pie. It's definitely reminiscent of some of the pies I ate growing up. I've been twice. I didn't have the best service the first time, but I spoke up, and the service was fantastic the second time. I also didn't care for the plain cheese version, as it was a bit lacking in flavor. The veggie version is my favorite--the vegetables come perfectly charred and it's super delicious. If you like pepperoni, definitely go with that option. I appreciate that the 'ronis are uncured. It's also nice to have a reasonably priced eating option on District Wharf.
google avatar

Hiral D.

Yelp
If you want a quick grab and go meal to enjoy outdoors, union pie is the right spot. They have pretty good thin crust pies for decent pricing at the wharf. We got the white pizza, and the cheese and tomato pizza. Service was pretty quick and we didn't feel like going to a sit down restaurant so I liked grabbing our pies and eating them outdoors. The white pizza was good, but it didn't have as much flavor and too much ricotta. The cheese was my favorite and had a bit more flavor to it. I recommend half per person and a whole for two; it's pretty filling. You can mix and match two halves...to make a whole :). I give it three stars because it's fast and tasty, but not really unique in anything.

Yelp
The worst thing about this place is that they aren't open later! I always really enjoy their gluten free crust, it's thin and crispy without being hard like so many gf crusts are. Solid pepperoni and really enjoyed their white pizza as well with the balsamic drizzle. Also loved that you could still do the gluten free as a half pizza.
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
I got pizza from Union Pie with my girlfriend after one of the free concerts at the adjacent pier. We got a white pizza and a pepperoni pizza. Both were good. The pepperoni was pretty high quality. The white's light drizzle of balsamic reduction was a good touch... Not too much where it dominated the flavor, but a good subtle tongue teaser. The crusts are very thin and light. The cheese (and pepperoni) aren't greasy at all. The pies are a decent size. A half pie is enough for a normal meal. If you're like me and sometimes forget to eat all day until a late dinner, a whole pie ($12-$15) is enough that you're unlikely to want more in one seating. The service was friendly. A slight downside: Like a couple of clowns, we decided to order right as the concert was ending, when the line was long. As a result, our pizzas took about a half hour. They were cranking out pizzas quickly. I don't think you'd have much wait if you went at any time other than their busiest moments. But, if you're going at a similar peak time, consider that even though they can make a pizza in minutes, they can only make so many at a time and those minutes can pile up.
google avatar

Tina B.

Yelp
Getting a pizza to go before heading back to hotel, it was a delicious thin crust. They're located next to Shake Shack. Wait time wasn't long. Pizza served hot & fresh. Grated Parmesan & spices in jars located at the window to add on your pizza. I normally don't order thin crust but this pizza was on point. The sauce was very flavorful in the pizza. It's a must!
google avatar

Carol K.

Yelp
The Hot&Sweet pizza was delicious. Make sure to order a drink because the peppers are spicy.
google avatar

Grace L.

Yelp
Located right across from Shake Shack, Union Pie is a pretty good option for cheap eats at the Wharf. It's a pizza stand with five types of pizza. $8 for half a pie, and $14 for a whole pie. I got half a pepperoni pizza because it was the only option with meat, and it was comfortably filling for lunch (and I can imagine for late night munchies too). The thin crusted pizza was tasty and satisfying, though don't expect an earth shattering experience. Maybe because I came for lunch on a weekday when there isn't a huge crowd, but I only had to wait 10 minutes for my pizza. The girl who took my order and the guy that gave me my pizza were perfectly friendly. There are also lots of tables on the pier around Union Pie where you can sit and enjoy your pizza. I'm totally down for coming back and trying out the other pizzas.
google avatar

Jane P.

Yelp
The pizza here is okay. I felt like it was a little over priced for the amount of pizza I got and the pizza took a tad too long to get prepared. The pizza stall in right outside and there are not seating area. I feel like it should be a place to get a quick bite to eat, but the orders are made to order so it takes a long time to get your food. I got the vegetable pizza which had a lot of eggplants and other vegetables. It was good and the crust was thin enough to my taste, but I didn't like how tiny the pizza was. I wish there were more toppings and more sauce.
google avatar

Priya M.

Yelp
Cute outdoor pizza stand. We waited 45 minutes for a "large" pepperoni pizza. Once I opened the box I saw it looked more like a medium size and it was also thin crust. Not a problem with thin crust but did have a problem that the pizza tastes just ok and too salty and was very greasy.

Alecia W.

Yelp
ON 5/6/23, I ordered a half cheese and tomato pizza. All I could taste was burnt crust. It overpowered any other flavor. I think the pizza has potential though, so I would try Union Pie more time before I write it off.

Lauren C.

Yelp
The hot & sweet pie was a delicious surprise while standing in line for a show at the anthem! My friends ordered the white pizza which was arguably even better than what I ordered. For a quick bite at the wharf, Union Pie is worth it!
google avatar

Mike G.

Yelp
Actually pretty good pizza, kind of a blend of NYC style and the "bar pizza" they speak of (which I've never heard before) but FFS STOP CLOSING AT RANDOM HOURS!!
google avatar

Namrata S.

Yelp
I love their hot and sweet sausage pizza. At first, I was kind of skeptical ordering pizza that came with honey drizzled on top but I am so glad I tried this pizza. The honey is a perfect combo with the hot sausage so the pairing goes really well. I really like that this pizza is thin crusted too so it's always super crispy. I have hyped this pizza to all my coworkers and whoever have tried this a are hooked as well.

Sam Y.

Yelp
Was walking home and was looking forward to grabbing a half pizza. When the attendant gave us the half pizza in a literal paper bag while others were receiving boxes, we asked for a box due to having a long walk home. We proceeded to get yelled at regarded their lack of boxes for half pies, the attendant was literally angry at us for asking for one. Pizza was cold and deformed by the time we got home. If you sell "half pies" for $9 you better have a half box and afford to hire employees who don't berate customers for reasonable requests.
google avatar

Amanda J.

Yelp
Union Pie is a little stand by the Anthem, and they are one of the cheaper deals on the Wharf. The White Pizza ($14) was perfect for my friend and I to split. It's unique and delicious. It's not a very heavy pizza so it was not overly filling, but it hit the spot. Wait times are long (30 minutes plus), but if you are not looking to sit down in a restaurant, it works.
google avatar

Ayatt A.

Yelp
We waited in line to order some pizza after a show at the anthem. They have a great selection of pies and you can mix and match and do half or whole pies. Because there was a big show getting out we had to wait about 20 minutes, but that wasn't a big deal. The pizza was really delicious, but a little bit too chewy for my taste. I prefer my pizza on the crispier side. It was still good though, I'd recommend the hot pie! It had the perfect amount of spice.
google avatar

Kiara C.

Yelp
When I first tried Union Pie, I was greeted by the most enthusiastic staff ever and I absolutely loved their energy. Unfortunately, I don't remember the two gentlemen's names to give props, but they were awesome! The pizza is yummy and the crust is made perfectly. Now, why 4 stars if I have nothing but great things to say?! Well, yesterday (4/23/19), the customer service was god awful, the woman taking orders had a nasty attitude, wasn't attentive and ignored you when you spoke to her. I was aggravated and not to mention she didn't use gloves when handling my pizzas- her nails and hands were dirty. Secondly, when I opened my pizza boxes, my pizza was thrown in, so the cheese and slices were all over. Respectfully suggesting: I would possibly hire someone new or get another employee to handle orders.
google avatar

Holli M.

Yelp
I was meeting a friend at the wharf for a concert at the Anthem. I decided to grab a bite to eat before the show. Union Pie had a short lie so I decided to give it a try. I should have taken that as a warning. I ordered a half white pizza. While pizzas were coming out quickly for those waiting, for some reason my pizza seemed to be behind the other orders and was taking longer for no reason. Once it came out of the oven, it was burnt around the edges so badly that the guy had to cut some off before placing it in a box for me. Another bad sign. Quite possibly one of the worst pizzas I have ever tasted. No flavor and if I did get a bite with taste, it was burnt. I would rather eat a frozen pizza before eating here again. Take my advice and go else where. Definitely not worth it!
google avatar

Ge R.

Yelp
Location is very cute and romantic. Slice is crispy and covered of a lot of cheese. It is tasty and you don't feel full. The smallest slice is a half of a pizza.
google avatar

Andrew C.

Yelp
This review and rating is for the gluten free pizza they serve. Not only was is better than an normal gluten-free pizza but what stood out was their care to minimize cross contamination. My girlfriend has celiacs, so how a restaurant handles their food definitely makes or breaks the experience for us. Every time the pizza was moved, the employees made sure to change gloves, wipe down surfaces, and use new utensils. All of that was without our request which made it that much better. Definitely recommend this place!
google avatar

Lauren H.

Yelp
This was my first time here and I loved it! They stay open late, they're fast and clean! I also love that they have peculiar pizza toppings! The pizza on the right had a white sauce, fresh mozzarella, caramelized onions and was topped with arugula and balsamic vinaigrette. How different is that! It's a great quick, go-to for Wharf visitors. They had great prices and friendly staff. I can't wait to return!
google avatar

Corinna H.

Yelp
Pros- *white pizza was amazing(hands down the best white pizza I have ever had) *thin crust *seating *friendly staff. Cons- *the time it took to cook the pizza. Would I go there again? More then likely. And my children loved it.
google avatar

John F.

Yelp
Sure they do the typical 'pepperoni' and 'white' pizzas but why not expand your horizons with options like Hot & Sweet (a personal fav) that combines honey with peppers. I know, it sounds unusual, and it is...but it's absolutely delicious and not the 'can get this anywhere' fare. Being from New York, I appreciate the thin crust with just a touch of 'flame' to it (although Chicago Style is my second-favorite pizza).
google avatar

Drew X.

Yelp
Despite the fact that you have to wait a little while it's totally worth it I've been eating here since the day they open and the pie consistency is always amazing You can probably get faster but you're definitely not going to get better PS I am gluten and dairy intolerant and they have vegan cheese and gluten-free crust so it's a win all over come try them
google avatar

Harry E.

Yelp
Went to Union Pie on a Saturday afternoon. It was so good! Thin crust is their thing here apparently and they really do it well. We ordered a Hot & Sweet. The serrano peppers and the honey really set this thing off. I wanted double the amount of serranos and will ask next time! 14 out of 10 would def get again. We also ordered a cheese & tomato. It was also delicious. Basic but solid. Other reviews comment on the wait time. We didn't experience a long wait. I mean, we waited a little but nothing worth commenting on.
google avatar

Natalie S.

Yelp
Worst pizza ever. Ordered a cheese pizza. Burnt, hardly any cheese, bitter acidic tomato sauce...I think this place sells mostly to tourists who don't know better. I will never go back there.
google avatar

Drizzy R.

Yelp
Got the half hot and sweet. Not bad flavors but all the toppings slid right off the flatbread - it's not a "real" crust. $8 for the half, which was good for me for dinner. Two stars because I saw the person making the pizzas handle the register and credit cards- and then put their gloved hands into the cheese. However, there aren't a whole lot of quick places on the wharf- they're all more sit-down (and expensive)
google avatar

Tim M.

Yelp
Local resident @ the channel. Love that this is downstairs and super quick. As long as you don't try to get it on the weekend because it's packed! The pizza is great I usually ask them to cook it an extra minute I like it a little more crispy.
google avatar

Kel G.

Yelp
You can smell pizza from blocks away, but it looks and smells better than it tastes. I'm a fan of mini pepperoni, but our pizza was charred so many of the mini pepps you couldn't even eat. In fairness, we ordered pizza at about 11:30pm so I'm sure the kids working just wanted to get it done and go home.
google avatar

Gordon G.

Yelp
I tried half a pie of their "White" pizza at Jammin' Java in Vienna, VA, and it was some of the best pizza I've ever had. Don't let the deceptively simple name of the pizza fool you... each slice was packed with so much mouth-watering flavor (ricotta, mozzarella, caramelized onions, garlic, arugula), my taste buds couldn't get enough. I live in Baltimore, but I might look for more reasons to drive to DC just for more Union Pie pizza... which might be reason enough.
google avatar

Michaela P.

Yelp
This is one of the best pizza I've had in the area. The thin crust was crispy and delicious. We got the hot & sweet pizza and it was perfect and light with a unique flavor. Was very impressed by this small pizza stand and would definitely recommend.
google avatar

SunWater365 X.

Yelp
My rating is for the workers who, despite the covid-19 induced business quietness of self-isolation, provided me a hot, crispy pizza for lunch...along with smiles and helpful mindfulness. People who are on the frontlines, keeping restaurant businesses going and SMILING through it -- despite possibly exposing themselves and their families to covid-19, are employees who are selfless team members. THANK YOU Charles and your female fellow team members, for being such WONDERFUL reminders of the best in people! Oh yea...the pizza was yummy! It was thin crust, crispy...just like I remember from Shakey's...of many moons ago.
google avatar

Jeffrey P.

Yelp
The pizza is tasty (we ate cheese/tomato and white pizza) but the cut makes it hard to eat while you're standing around, and as mentioned in the other reviews the wait was impossibly long (25 mins for us). The line waiting to order was typically 1-5 people long, and the crowd of people waiting for their pizza was 10+. There's a workflow problem here and they need to solve it. I'd love to come back, but I'll probably read current reviews first to see if they've made it work better.
google avatar

C J.

Yelp
Horrible. I'm sorry this place is a booth at The Wharf. Its started out great this summer (2018). The first 1/2 pizza was fantastic! I went back the next day and it was great. The 3rd time it was over cooked and the overload of Pepperonis were crunchy and salty. Today, 5 people in the booth no one else buying pizza I got a pizza with a wet sloppy crust. The Pizza must have been sitting there already made when we ordered. They normally cook each pizza per order. That didn't happen today. The pizza was warm not hot. They can keep that nasty pizza! I digress.
google avatar

Kendall B.

Yelp
The best pizza in WHARF! Union Pie is the street food version of the bar Union Stage down the street, which makes it extremely convenient for customers that just want pizza and not everything else the bar has to offer. The sweet and spicy is absolutely incredible, if you can handle the heat. I live in wharf and almost all residents agree that union pie/stage has the best pizza in the neighborhood. It's also the best bang for your buck for pizza in wharf as well.
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
The most amazing pizza I've had, hands down. It's unique - yes, but that's the point. I had the hot and sweet and my wife got the white pizza. WOW! What a TREAT for both of us. Friendly/cool staff and we even got to meet the owners - who happen to also own and operate the new music venue at the wharf - Union Stage. It's family owned, which I love: 3 brothers and all super sweet/good fellows. Support local/small business and go eat some of the best pizza you'll ever have. My wife and I will be returning to the DC area for the cherry blossoms and you better believe, pizza will also be blossoming on our trip! 5 stars!
google avatar

Eileen P.

Yelp
I tried their white pizza the other night and it was great. Initially I was slightly put off by the prices (around $8 for a large slice or $14 for an entire pizza), but all my bad thoughts melted away after I ate my pizza. I like a thin, lightly charred pizza and a nice gooey topping. Union Pie delivered on both criteria. I will definitely return!
google avatar

Jessica H.

Yelp
Pizza was delicious! Pepperoni and jalapeño all the way, could have been crispier but altogether I was very impressed
google avatar

Jeremy V.

Yelp
Pretty good kiosk pizza establishment right on the Wharf. Pizza was pretty good and service was fast.
google avatar

Jamie R.

Yelp
Ive had their pepperoni twice now and I'm totally smitten with them. Its a great pizza for DC. And the price is great too. Its outdoors, so maybe nit the best is a hundred degree weather.
google avatar

Kerin N.

Yelp
Not for Celiacs! You can pay extra for gluten free crust if it's a personal diet choice but if you have Celiac do NOT eat this pizza. First of all, the pizza is delicious. The crust so thin, cheese and crisp pepperoni slide right off, just a melty mess of deliciousness. However, I specifically asked if it's truly gluten free and the very attentive gentleman assured me yes, it's truly gluten free. I let my 10 year old with Celiac eat two pieces. Fast forward three hours and she was - well she was very very sick. It's definitely contaminated with gluten. Which, I should I have known with such a small work space. I took the guy at his word when I should've asked more questions and watched the prep. My daughter paid the price. So, I want to say yes this pizza is amazing but please don't take it as safe for a true gluten intolerance or Celiac.
