Union - Review - Capitol Hill - Seattle - The Infatuation

"A relative newcomer to Capitol Hill's LGBTQ+ scene, Union opened in 2018 and has been gracing us with their expansive fire pit-warmed patio—and “Rupaul’s Drag Race” viewing parties—ever since. In contrast to the clubbier spots around the gayborhood, Union focuses more on dinner and drinks. Keep it in mind for a relaxed burger-and-martini date night." - Aimee Rizzo

Oh hell yes. I love this place. Been here a couple times. Their service is amazing! I usually just order vodka shots so I don’t have an opinion about their drinks but their FOOD…. Is so good! It was $12 for eight wings and $13 for a sandwich. I was expecting it to be pretty mid considering it’s just a bar, but the food was actually so tasty and enjoyable. After tip and tax, I only paid $28 for the food for my partner and I. The bartenders are also very attentive and nice which is always appreciated.

Google
The chicken pesto pizza is absolutely five star material. The cheese curds are the classiest mozzarella sticks. Worth it! Christian hit the nail on the head with the recommendation. And he provides great service.

Google
Great bar restaurant prices are good and service is excellent. Location is great too.

I was a little nervous, but the hostess Courtney was very polite and helpful! She took my order and made a wonderful lime drink for me. I hope she gets a raise and this place continues to be welcoming to all folks. :3

Google
First time coming here. The place is nice clean and good popular music, Aaron the bartender was super nice snd welcoming. Definitely will be back.

Google
We visited this bar to watch RuPauls Drag Race. The crowd was not very welcoming (a bunch of pretentious ppl tbh). We ordered food and it was good, it arrived sooner than expected. The staff was attentive and polite but it was almost impossible to watch the show. There were not enough speakers or the volume was too low. The only place where you could actually listen was on the section on the right with a big screen

Glad Union has reopened. The new location has a great vibe, with plenty of open space and socially distant tables. Service was a little slow initially, but it looks like they have more staff now and it’s much better. The food is great! I’ve had several meals from their menu and was surprised by all of them, especially the breakfast burger on the Sunday Brunch menu. The spot is great for happy hour, a night out with friends or Sunday brunch.

Google
A warning. Our server insisted he take my credit card before we could place our order. My credit card was out of my possession for about an hour. And my worst fears were realized. Two large fraudulent charges appeared on my account three days later. I was dumb. Don’t you be.

Yelp
What a fun bar! My friend brought me here for a nightcap and I'm so glad he did. Walking in they checked our IDs. It was a Wednesday night so not super packed. You enter through the patio and it's sooo beautiful! It was all lit up with lights. Inside, the vibe in here was so fun. I can only imagine what it's like on a weekend! They had pop music playing (my favorite) with the music videos playing on the board behind. Soooo fun! My friend ordered me a gin and tonic, my go to drink. It was made really well and really good! The staff here was so nice and a gentleman asked if he could take our glasses at the end of the night. I'd definitely come back here!

Yelp
Such a fun bar in the Capitol Hill area! Came here with a couple of friends to prefunk dinner reservations nearby and it was a great time. It was 80's night, so everybody was dressed up in fun themed outfits and it was overall a really fun vibe. Everybody was nice and in great moods! Music selection was on point too with lots of 2000s throwbacks. Service was great! Our bartender was super nice and they checked on us often. They made an extra marg for our table accidentally and gave it to us on the house anyways which was cool. We tried a couple drinks and they were poured super strong which is always welcome in my book. Overall a fun spot to grab a couple drinks with friends and would definitely come back in the future.

Yelp
Why am I just finding this out for Jan 2025?!! Happy Hour Mon- Fri. 4:00-6:00 50% off ALL wines. Bottles and Glass!!! Woo Hoo!!! I'm a FaN!!!

Yelp
We've been here twice when we come to visit Seattle. The vibe is nice and overall really fun. Saturday nights can be really busy with a ton of people which makes it fun too.
google avatar

Yelp
The drinks and food were pretty good and the vibes were on point. We went on a Monday and had a fantastic time. The service was good and the Halloween decor was really cute too. I loved the playlist and would come back honestly just for the vibes but the cheese curds would also be worth it.

Yelp
Very stand-and-model video bar attracting the A-list-wannabes. The staff is pretty unengaged and seem just plain miserably unhappy. Drinks and food are fair. The one plus on nice days is their outdoor patio, but even so...

Jeffrey F.

Yelp
Great bar! Friendly staff. Doorman was especially nice and he complimented my Justin Bieber shirt.. I had the baked brie. It was delicious and visually stunning! Will definitely go back. It felt nice not to be looked down upon for being older. Spencer.

Yelp
A Great place to get drinks with the guys. I always enjoy my time here. Always a recommended stop in the neighborhood

Yelp
Are you gay or an ally? Do you live in Seattle or are you visiting? Do you like dangerously strong drinks? Good music? Cute guys? Check out Union. It used to be up around the corner, but it's better here.
google avatar

Sean B.

Yelp
Kind of checked out a bunch of gay bars while I was in Seattle for a long weekend, and this was tied for first place (with Madison Pub) for being the most fun. Nice crowd, friendly people, service was good. Zero complaints. Would return.

Yelp
The pandemic made socialising hard at first, and a despondent affair later for the debonair homosexual alighting from city to city looking to meet cute, funny but definitely not funny looking guys. Union alleviated that despair for me, and for that I am grateful. First, the atmosphere is urbane, electric yet easy. There are gay bars where one feels compelled to "perform," but the ambiance at Union exerted no such pressure. The staff and the crowd were all easy to talk to. I had several fun conversations with strangers. Secondly, the patio area is expansive, bustling and provides a much-needed reprieve from the necessary tediousness of pandemic precautions. I am enclosing a picture I took with friends I hadn't seen in years. With the stars above and luminous, hopeful camaraderie below, how could one not have a magical evening?

Yelp
Great LGBTQ bar in Seattle. Very busy and great service. The vibe is great in the bar and everyone is friendly

Yelp
I was there yesterday, it's a nice place, nice drinks. Just staff was a little impolite, he was making out with another guy in the restroom. The beard and bald guy - I don't remember his name. I won't come back because this is not the environment that I am looking to go.

Alan R.

Yelp
Excellent food. We enjoyed an assortment platter of very different flavors and there was not one flavor that dominated the next one. The spices are wonderful!!

Jacob K.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I visited from New York on a Saturday afternoon. We had a great time getting a few drinks. Crowd seemed nice enough. Drinks were pretty good, for Seattle. Didn't get to check out a dance party or a RDR watch party - can't wait for next time.

Edgar R.

Yelp
Drinks are weak and the bartenders still have the audacity to ask for tips. Like bye. Make it worth it. If you are asking for almost 12$ and not pour alcohol. Union eventually will be a 2 1/2 star rating.

Yelp
In their new location on the corner of 10th just a few blocks from their original spot on 14th, you'll find many of the same things you might have liked about the Union of old: a safe, energetic space for guys to come out and enjoy an adult beverage, some good pub grub, and toe-tapping beats in the background. Most of the staff here are super nice and friendly, trying their hardest to provide an enjoyable experience for guests. There are a few staff (maybe managers?) who seem to have consistently bad days and if you are unlucky enough to experience them it can really put a negative vibe into your experience (hence the 3-stars). With COVID restrictions in place, plan to still wait in line to get in, and stay seated (no roaming around). If you do get up, that mask had better immediately go on your face. The outdoor patio has a nice water feature for ambience, and robust heaters and a gas fire for warmth. Inside there is the familiar comfortable vibe that translated well from the old Union to this new location. Union is for a wide variety of folks. Very accepting and open to all types. Mostly guys here but a few women show up as well. There are other bars to go to in Seattle if you're looking for more of a niche group. But you'll be welcome at Union no matter who you are.
google avatar

Sara C.

Yelp
I really thought I'd miss the old location, but wow, I love the new Union! It's such an amazing space for the beautiful and the bold. Everything has simply been upgraded for the better: bigger patio, a more delicious menu, and an amazing variety of bartenders. Shaun, with a friendly smile and great arms for pouring my tequila sodas, truly takes the best care of me, above and beyond service every time, and he regularly contributes to my friends and me having an amazing time. To be fair, the entirety of the Union staff are all incredibly welcoming, and each night there is an experience. Come see the beauty for yourself, and trust me, you can't quite bear a Union pour. Cheers!

Yelp
Super friendly staff that are securing the establishment with each person entering being told about covid and mask rules. They escort you to a table with a guide of how to place orders and where the restrooms are located. Tables are distanced, but that the atmosphere still feels like a club precious with the vibey music that play on through their large screen TVs all throughout the establishment. There's a front patio space that is super cute and the light wood really brings together all of the different plant types. It's so nice to have a choice to be inside or outside, without sacrificing the volume of the music. The party is literally weaved throughout the bar ;)

Yelp
Very nice place for going and relaxing, and having a few drinks and lunch or dinner. I have enjoyed coming here regularly and they have very good food their BBQ burger is awesome and their prices are reasonable. The waiter's are friendly and considerate.

Chess C.

Yelp
I am so disappointed. This bar claims to be a place for everyone and it definitely is not. My partner and I came in to enjoy our first Saturday for Pride month. My partner was wearing a harness and suspenders and was told by the man working at the bar that he couldn't dress like that and had to wear a shirt or jacket but that it could be unbuttoned. We felt very shamed and unwelcomed. Also I would like to note that no where on their website listed a dress code and photos from their events have a MULTITUDE of people without shirts on who were MORE scantily clad than he was (see photos!). My partner is trans and a person of color... this place is NOT welcoming to all. Do not support this buisness until they do better, the employees are discriminating.

Yelp
Super cool place. Went to celebrate my Brother's birthday and it was bumping. Good drinks, cool people, big patio and a DJ!!!! Playing good music not lame music. The kitchen was closed but it was still a great time. Looking forward to going again soon. Sorry no pics You have to go see it for yourself. Enjoy!

Yelp
Atmosphere Great! Bartenders.... Rude. Always rude and snooty. Kind of a joke at this point. Food 3 Stars. The charcuterie board was stale, and horrible for $25 bucks.
google avatar

Dean Christian C.

Yelp
The best, kindest and cleanest gay bar ever! I am so impressed with the drinks and just how hygienic it is. Weho should be ashamed!
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
Drinks are good and reasonably priced. Cute crowd often. Some of the bartenders are friendly, very much appreciated by this newcomer to Seattle. Have found other bars to be be ruder, so I come often. Surprisingly good hummus platter for a bar.
google avatar

Christian R.

Yelp
Cute bar atmosphere in Capitol Hill. Delicious bar food and a wide selection of draft beers and other drinks. If you're looking to sit down and enjoy a beer, definitely the place to go.

Yelp
I don't understand why this place has only 3.5 stars the place is Beautiful and Modern the staff is Nice and friendly. Covid comply and great Drinks
google avatar

Yelp
From the original owners of the iconic Seattle bar thumper, Union brings back to Capitol Hill what it needs, a gar bar. Strong drinks, great atmosphere. I love the layout of this place. It has a outdoor area which is great for summer! There's a dining and lounge area with a fireplace. And there's a video bar area that has a rectangular bar which is nice because you get to face real life human beings on the other side. The bartenders are super nice. And some of them a familiar from other bars. The video bar has a nice mix of modern and classic songs. I didn't get the chance to order anything from the food menu but it all looks pretty good. Not a big selection for vegans. So far it seems preety chill and from the looks of things it'll be pretty busy.!

Yelp
Decided to take a stroll down memory lane and visit some of my old favorite spots in Cap Hill. Although the vibes at Union are very different in the post COVID world, I am glad to see that they are making it work with extended patio seating and a larger food menu. Had a few drinks and the chicken nachos. Not a place I would usually go for dinner or take out, but a great spot to have a cold drink on the patio. Love to support my local LGBTQ+ small businesses! #supportsmallbusiness #supportLGBTQ+

Yelp
100% do NOT recommend. As a woman in the queer community, I would not feel safe returning to try going into that bar again. Both me and my gf were met with hostility and nasty attitude at the door by the bouncer. We were both completely sober and yet turned away to not be allowed in? I was confused and even tried asking as I thought at first she had to be joking. But she became nasty and said she has the power to turn us away and didn't even need a reason. The bouncer obviously had a personal bias against us for whatever unknown reason. But based on how she treated us, and other comments I've read, we aren't the only ones she's treated unfairly and nasty towards. I walked down the block and we went into queer/bar and is was a MUCH nicer experience. I even had conversations with both security and the bouncer there and when I told them what happened, they even said they weren't surprised based on things they've heard about the union, which apparently has been going down hill. I suggest that from a business perspective you might want to reconsider your choices for who you place at the front door at the very least, cuz you're obviously losing business.

Samantha H.

Yelp
I never leave negative Yelp reviews but this was outrageous. We walked up after a lovely dinner just to experience the most homophobic interaction with the bouncer. 10/10 don't recommend for queer women which is incredibly disappointing for such an inclusive city.

Yelp
If you're visiting Seattle and your looking for a place similar to the "Midnight Sun" in SF or "the Abby" in WeHo this is the place. (There isn't dancing, like at the Abby, and I haven't seen go-go boys here yet) but this is the place to go. The clientele is Preppy-Hip and the music is Video. I'm not a drinker, so I can't tell you what the drinks are like, but the food is west coast and pretty good. Friday nights for RuPaul's Drag Race are crowded with lots of eye candy. The bartenders are sexy. It's very chatty.
google avatar

Yelp
Unique gem discovered in Capital Hill. Feels more like being welcomed into a friend's home and relaxing outdoor patio. Excellent place to unwind, have top notch drinks and connect with others. Very welcoming. Staff was attentive and friendly. Enjoy finding a place like this nestled in the neighborhood where you get the personal touch of the owner mingling with patrons. Must return indeed.
google avatar

Andrew S.

Yelp
One of my favorite LGBT bars in Seattle. Welcoming, good drinks AND food, nice vibe overall. Would recommend whether it was a Monday or a Friday night.

Dina L.

Yelp
Rude, pretentious staff. Overpriced, mediocre bar food. Oh, and I bumped into a patron vomiting in the alley. To quote David of Schitt's Creek: "I don't want ANY OF THIS."

Jay G.

Yelp
Went here Friday night for the first time since before Covid. Definitely won't be back. The service was awful . First off, we were talked to like we were children by the guy at the door going over the rules of the bar. It was very condescending and almost an immediate sign to not go in. Finally, We were sat and literally left at our table for at least 15 minutes. Several employees walked by with no acknowledgment of us at the table with not even water. Then, all the sudden they bring us drinks that are not even for us . We finally asked if we could order a drink and the guy said I'll be right back. Nobody ever came back, again several employees were passing us even going into an office of some sort towards the bathroom. We left and definitely won't be back. Very embarrassing experience after taking someone here form out of town. There are better gay bars on the hill that I would recommend. UNION is over rated and provides unprofessional service. Will definitely discuss with my inner city friends so we can all find a new place to go for sure.
google avatar

Owen P.

Yelp
The bar owner started out by insulting my friends intelligence because we weren't standing exactly where he wanted us, then after aggressively going over the rules outside, he broke everyone while approaching our table in a more than uncomfortable way. He went on about his past bar life experience and how he spent $70K just for us to be able to order food. Then, after trying to stop 4 servers several times to check out, I went to the door to ask for our checks and was passionately informed I was breaking the rules by leaving my table and needed to sit down. If considering a gay bar while on vacation to Seattle, maybe not the one where to creepy bar owner can break all the rules while trying to come in to you and your friends and then yells at you for getting up to ask for the check.
google avatar

Ted M.

Yelp
Definitely the "in" bar serving the LGBTQ community but also very friendly to the straight patrons too. No attitude and friendly/professional staff. Fun atmosphere that includes indoor and outdoor spaces to share a beverage or some delicious munchies. A must visit especially on a sunny day where it's likely to have a crowd both indoors and outside in the large patio area. It has a reputation building where it's the "in" bar for the Capitol Hill gayborhood!
google avatar

Alexis S.

Yelp
The service sucks so bad here and the drinks are even worse lol, I would forsure not return to this place in the future
google avatar

Ty Q.

Yelp
Try the burgers, they're delicious. I had the BBQ Bacon Burger. They have the nice, big steak fries that are perfect for dipping in ranch. Try to sit in Mikey's section; he is amazing.

Kenneth W.

Yelp
Their drinks are decently priced but bar service could be a little faster. If you come here, just don't come hungry. Our food took over an hour to arrive.
google avatar

Wayne W.

Yelp
Terrible, indifferent service. Lousy food. I wanted to love this place. The space is amazing, the patio is great. But I've been twice and the bartenders are either oblivious or rude. The waitstaff do a solid job. Ordered two panini and got grilled sandwiches on cheap white bread. I saw a bartender put a customer's credit card in his mouth while he waited for the receipts to print. I could go on. Maybe they just need time to get things Update: Gave them another chance. Different bartender, same poor service. My friend ordered a Guinness and was handed a can. When he asked for a glass, the bartender seemed put out (no one drinks Guinness from a can). He just handed over the glass, didn't pour. I paid with cash given the issues they have running cards. $14, gave him a $20, he gave me a five and a one. If he had given me singles, he would have gotten a decent tip, despite the attitude. But he got $1. I've never seen anyone smile there. The whole staff seems frazzled and stressed out. I think they need some training.

Yelp
I have given this place at least 4 months to try to hit it. Classic gay video bar for those who know that concept. Bar service is better than your run of the mill gay bar. You can actually order a real cocktail (negroni, Manhattan, gimlet etc) that will be decent (if a little strong, cause it's still a gay bar dammit). Definitely nothing to upturn your nose too for the price. Going on the weekend can be hit-or-miss service wise since they can still get slammed. ambience: think a low-key smaller format to the Abbey, mixed heavy with the video bar concept, that definitelty endear you quickly. A patio and a fire pit with healthy WiFi makes this place shine (could use a couple outlet in the fireplace area). Food service ultimately is what gives me pause, in comparison to greats such as The Abbey, or former similar formats such as Starky's (PDX), Paradise (long beach) and it's pre-date-owned-by-same-ownership Thumpers, the food leaves a lot to desire. I ordered a Blue Burger which came well-done with fries that were overall season salted with a unappetizing after-taste. I wish they would utilize their large kitchen for a decent classic full entree dinner menu with entrees or at least fare that would match a Hamburger Mary's. Overall definitely a destination to come for a fancy gay cocktail and RuPaul Drag Race or music videos, just not much for the food.

Kenny S.

Yelp
I like this bar primarily because the bartenders seem to do a really good job of developing and maintaining amazing customer rapport. I moved to another state and when I returned I was greeted with much love and excitement. My personality is not very big and I am rather introverted, so it could be easy to dismiss me. To come home to a warm welcome after a long absence is awesome. Don't lose your bartenders. They are the bread and butter that make the ambiance of this place that much better! ‍‍‍

Yelp
If you miss Lobby Bar or Purr, Union is the bar for you! It has a very similar vibe to classic Seattle gay bars like Purr and most of the staff from Purr. Beautiful Outdoor patio and the friendlies bartenders on the hill.
google avatar

Alex W.

Yelp
Union is the newest gay bar in Seattle and it definitely feels that way. Lots of buzz so it's busy on the weekends but simultaneously figuring stuff out with a plethora of issues that can hopefully be ironed out over time. I've been twice in the past month and the bartenders seem overwhelmed (and understaffed), and it always seems like there are issues with their systems. The oval bar itself takes up a huge amount of space in the middle of the main room which doesn't lend itself to long bar lines or even crowd flow around the room. It took at least 20 minutes to get any drinks so both times I've gone, my group got a drink or two and then quickly headed somewhere else. On the positive side, I liked the drinks that we ordered and everyone loved the patio space.
google avatar

Leela S.

Yelp
I wound up here with some friends last weekend. The bar was packed to the gills and rocking at 7 PM on a Sunday. The gorgeous weather didn't hurt--the patio was too crowded to even find room for our group to stand. Fortunately, we were able to snag some tables inside. Service was embarrassingly slow. It took forever and a day to put in an order at the bar, thanks to sluggish POS systems. The layout inside the bar (for the bartenders) isn't ideal as well--really little walking room, with bottles taking up the majority of the space. This makes it a pain for the bartenders to actually grab anything that isn't near them and further slows down service. Drink selection was reasonable, and they have some food as well. Definitely a louder atmosphere than a lot of other bars in this area, so be prepared: the music is more club than brewery. If it's your scene, though, you'll love it! Judging by how crowded things were, it sure looks like the rest of the neighborhood already does.

Rob O.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere, good food and drinks. A bit tainted by the rude and condescending host/server. Upon arriving I stood and waited to show my vax card. No one came after a few minutes so I joined my friend already at his table. The host then made me go back around to the front to show my vax card and then chastised me for not honoring the "wait to be seated" sign. He could have just checked the card at the table but felt he had to make a point and then be rude and frankly bitchy about it. I bit my tongue and complied and otherwise had a great time. I'm sure he's had to deal with a lot of jerks because of vax and mask stuff. Again I wasn't a jerk and complied and the attitude I got back wasn't necessary. I'd probably think twice about going back.

Yelp
Thanks for taking safety seriously! My first time here I was greeted by Shaun who gave us the flight attendant safety speech. Very much appreciated. With a young, unvaccinated child at home I felt safe being at a bar taking the pandemic and the well being of its customers seriously. The service was really friendly and the waiters/waitresses were quick and happy to chat. The tables were cleaned before we sat down and the bathrooms were like a hospital. Really happy with the new location and the proximity to parking. Love the nachos and the choice beers on tap.
