NYC’s New Restaurant Openings

"First, Louis Vuitton opened a restaurant. Then Armani. And now, just as Miranda Priestly once said, trends trickle down from the runway to the department stores—or in this case, big fashion. Uniqlo’s Midtown flagship now has a coffee shop, where you can get matcha and espresso drinks to fuel your shopping." - will hartman, bryan kim

Uniqlo Coffee - Review - Midtown - New York - The Infatuation

Uniqlo Opens First Uniqlo Coffee Shop in New York | Eater NY

"Opened on Friday, March 14 as the brand's first North American coffee-shop location, this cafe is located inside the Midtown store at 660 Fifth Avenue (between West 52nd and 53rd streets) on the second floor and is open during the store's hours. It serves a simple menu of drinks: coffee, espresso beverages, cold brew, and matcha lattes, alongside not-caffeinated drinks like hot chocolate, orange juice, and water. The cafe took over what was previously a Starbucks, which closed way back in 2018. Many counterparts across Asia — in Japan, Hong Kong, the Philippines, and Malaysia — tend to offer pastries and desserts like cookie butter cheesecakes and hojicha gelato. Getting into food isn't out of left field for the fashion retailer, which often dips into food-themed graphic T-shirts, such as ramen shops and Pocky. Eater has reached out for more information about the new New York cafe." - Nadia Chaudhury

Having seen Uniqlo Coffee a few months back, I wanted to give it a go, but I never got the chance to until today. It is somewhat hidden, as it is on the second floor. You almost want to take the prevalent escalator up to the third floor, but I suggest you go to the left and walk up to the second floor. It is behind the embroidery station. The space was well designed; it is compact but has everything. The seating consists of seats arranged around two large poles. I will say it was annoying because people who were not customers or drinking anything were sitting there to rest, so we could not find a seat until later. Though I do believe in free seating, there should be a rule that coffee customers get priority seating or something similar. My friend and I both ordered the Americano, mine hot and his cold. The barista taking our order at first seemed like they did not care, but it turned out they were just chill with a low voice; they even cracked a joke, and did their job well. The taste of the coffee was great. It tasted nutty when I drank my hot Americano, but my friend’s iced Americano tasted nutty then tart at the end. Then when I drank mine, I tasted a bit of tartness too. Regardless, we both enjoyed our coffee. There is a bathroom in Uniqlo(!!!), but the line is ridiculously long, so do not expect to use it right away. I gave up trying to use it. Though I do not think I would go out of my way to come back just to drink something, I think it is a great environment for people who are waiting for their partner or friends to shop. When that does happen, I would like to try their matcha or teas.

I finally got to try Uniqlo’s first ever coffee shop in North America. I happened to be shopping near Fifth Avenue and remembered to stop by Uniqlo. This location is quite large and I got a bit lost at first. The escalator took me straight to the third floor but their coffee shop is located on the 2nd floor. I would recommend taking the stairs instead. The coffee shop is located near the graphic t-shirt section and by the self checkout area. They have a small menu of drinks (coffee, lattes, cold brew, caffeinated drinks, water and juice) but alas no pastries. There are some café tables and seating—great for those to hang out while waiting for their significant other to finish shopping. I got a large Iced Hojicha Latte ($8). My first impression was very positive. The drink was refreshing, earthy, and nutty. Not as strong and bitter as matcha which I appreciated. I really enjoyed sipping my drink in this quiet area of the store while perusing my phone. I do hope they eventually add a small selection of pastries to pair with the drinks.

Google
pretty great coffee actually. ordered ice oat latte and oat matcha. latte was great, matcha was a bit bland. super friendly staff, and they don't charge extra for alternative milk which is a nice touch

Google
Ordered an iced matcha latte. Matcha taste is pleasantly strong and tasteful compared to most coffee shops chains in the city (that just taste like water+milk). Would recommend if you want a good matcha drink around the area. Seating place is small on a busy day as both shoppers and clients are resting in the area.

Yelp
It is really cool that Uniqlo now has a cafe in their 5th Avenue location. What cool way to unwind and refresh with a cup of matcha tea? It is a really cute cafe on the 2nd floor. Their menu is pretty simple. They said they use grade A ceremonial matcha powder and it was not that light neon green as I hope it would be when I got it. It was just green and not like a neon green that ceremonial matcha powder has. I got it with whole milk and unsweetened. It was just like how it was, plain matcha flavor. The cafe got a lot of plants though and it is very decorative all over the place. Pretty crowded too with its dine in seating area. Couldn't even find an empty chair or seat on the bench.
