The Best Breakfast Sandwiches in the East Bay | Eater SF

"The branch of this Salvadorean bakery in San Pablo will switch their TV-screen menu to English for the gringo proficient in Duolingo Spanish. Their Pan con Todo comes standard with scrambled eggs, queso blanco, sour cream, and refried black beans, all served in between a pillow-soft French roll. You can add sausage, meat, or plantains if you’d like. A side of thin, orange salsa packs seductive heat, rounding out a torta you will come back for." - Ori Ravid

So I treated my neighbor to breakfast this morning. She recommended this place. The man who took our order (I didn't catch his name) was super friendly and being that my Espanol is terrible he spoke English. I ordered huevos con chorizo while she ordered chicken with Sunnyside up eggs. The meal we ordered came with café and pan. I loved it! 😍 when placing the order he asked me if this was my first time at this bakery because he has seen my neighbor several times before. I told him yes. He gave me a delicious concha to try on the house. It went so well with mi café. I asked my neighbor how her chicken 🐔 tasted and she gave me a piece. That was delicious. I know next time I come here I'm ordering the chicken. Not that anything was wrong with my meal. It was delicious. I want to come back and try new things from their menu.

Google
Great Guatemalan breakfast, great Guatemalan bread and sweet bread too. Parking and seating is tough on the weekends, so be prepared to park a few blocks away and Happy hunting with the seating.

Google
I've eaten here numerous times over the past few years, and I finally need to ✍️ a review. Universal Bakery is awesome. They consistently deliver the goods. Employees are welcoming and courteous, food is always tasty. I've ordered a variety of items. Yet, my favorite is the pan con todo with chicken.

Dwayne Dela Cruz

Google
Everything here is prepared fresh daily, and the flavors are wonderful. I had the steak breakfast plate and a breakfast sandwich. You can tell everything was made with pride. I loved the quesadilla bread, and their beans are delicious. I will be returning to order the Universal plate that features all the meats.

Yelp
My family has been coming here since forever. It's a Guatemalan bakery. But you can get breakfast and order lunch as well. It's always a treat when we get together and go to the panadera. Parking is a bit difficult so Find where you can and park. It's a busy and crowded place so find a table and make one of Your party members sit. The door is always open since there is one way in and one way out so dress warm. Ok as soon as you walk in you are in line. And start looking at what you want. I always order pan con frijoles y queso, and they don't give me any smack for the removal of egg and creama. My family gets the typico breakfast and we order bread to go. They get coffee and I get atole. I have tried all the atole's they have because why not? They are all really good. The last time I went I asked for atole de maize and she said they only had enough for a small. I said sure I'll take it. I thought that was already nice, she could have easily said nope but she checked and asked if that was ok. Since my family goes there a lot they know some of the staff and they are always so nice. They have a lot of options that can easily become vegetarian if it's not already. Such a great place to enjoy. Thank you

Yelp
Very delicious cheap and quick The bread was amazing and so was the food my favorite was the cream empanada and the arroz con leche
google avatar

Yelp
The pan con todo with salichicha is an excellent breakfast sandwich. Just a great mix of eggs, beans, sausage, cheese, and cream. But it's not so big as to be a gut bomb. You could easily get one of these guys for breakfast (esp if you mix up the proteins) pretty often. Cheap too. If I lived closer, I'd go all the time but this will now be in my "I dropped someone early at SFO" rotation.

Yelp
What a delicious traditional Guatemalan place we found. As soon as you walk in you can smell the freshly baked bread. We got the huevos revueltos breakfast, the refried black beans were so tasty, the eggs had tomatada on top and that just made them perfect. The only thing was that the plátanos fritos were cold. We also got the carne asada breakfast, the carne asada was so delicious and tender. The meals come with coffee and a freshly baked bolillo (roll). We also ordered several pieces of pan dulce to take home and share with the fam. They only have six tables to eat inside, so you need to get up early to beat the crowd. They do have a few table outside as well, but it was raining today.
google avatar

Merl S.

Yelp
Our go to when we want different kind of breakfast sandwich. The carne asada torta that I always get is grilled fresh. The ladies at the counter that take your order are always friendly and easy to talk to. When we order ahead, our food is usually ready. But when it's early in the morning, the bakery is full of customers waiting and eating. The bakery has a nice feel and is always busy. The whole ambiance of the bakery is like being home when your mom or grandma are cooking.

Yelp
Amazing Guatemalan food, which I would have never known based on the name of the place. Our table was very wobbly, but the food was so good that I couldn't resist 5-star rating. We ordered the #2 and #3 breakfast plates. We will definitely come back when we visit the area again.

Yelp
No jodas bicho!!!! Están ustedes peor que Mc. Dondalds. Entre los años la Big Mac se a echo más y más chiquita. Pues así están ustedes con su pan con nada..... digo pan con todo. Entre los años le van quitando media pulgada al bolillo.

Yelp
Baked goods and freshly cooked food on the menu are so amazingly delicious and the taste are uniquely just cook right. i always bought the conchitas, besos, cupcakes , tamal, pollo estofado with rice, all delicious and yummy. i will go out my way just to buy all of my Favorites here. No place can be as good and well prepared but here at the Universal Bakery in Geneva, San Francisco.

Kenia E.

Yelp
This place is great to order food especially bread and atoles. Good service. They are very kind. Of course it's a big line since it's close to many places and lots of family gather there to eat. Good thing that's open very early so you can call and make your orders.

Yelp
I haven't been here in a very long time but the first time I was here everything was cooked to order and the espresso drinks were great. I have been here a few times to grab a coffee (but not food) to go and let's just say they don't know how to make them. Today for the last time I was craving their plantain breakfast plate and this will be the last time I come here. It looks like everything here is now pre-made and food sits in hot holding until you order it for the exception of the panes and meats they actually have to make. Fried plantains were rubbery and not fresh. I saw the lady grab them from the hot plates to make my plate along with the beans (beans taste fine on hot holding). Lots of corner are being cut now . I've tried coming to get a latte (espresso drinks) A few times in hopes they get better since I got a good one the first time I was here but today's "mocha" was pretty bad. They don't know how to properly steam the milk and you end up with hot milk and bad quality tasting coffee/chocolate. Sadly I won't be back for antoner chance. Hope everyone else has a better experience than me.

Yelp
I don't know how to put into words how much I love this place. I always get there Pan con Todo y platanos! BOMB! Best platanos ever. Their pirujos (bread) so delicious. There torta de Carne asada Bomb! Everything is delicious if you don't believe me, try it !!! Their arroz con leche delicious!

Yelp
Guatemalan food! "Where is Guatemala" one might ask? Well, if one starts at the border of New Mexico and Mexico and goes south down the middle, one will eventually hit the border of Mexico and Guatemala! Now why is this important? It is important because the two countries are neighbors and therefore have almost identical ingredients in their cuisines; rice, beans, plantains, corn and etc. However, if you try the seemingly same dishes from both sides with some foodie curiosity, you will notice that there are differences. Some of those small differences will make a big difference if you have a particular pallet. Universal Bakery is a clean, spacey and friendly place for one to try Guatemalan food. The owner is very friendly and the service is very good. The ingredients are high quality and the dishes are delicious. We tried a few different items and they were all good, and according to my personal Guatemalan cuisine consultant who was enjoying the dishes right next to me, they are done "the way they are done in Guatemala"! Go for it! Discover the finer differences between Central American cuisines!

Yelp
Rise and Shine! Let's head over to @Universal Bakery this morning! Our food buddy also told us so much about this place and we just had to try it. When we got here, there was quite a long que outside. And after having food from here we can see why. This place offers amazing Guatemalan food and bread! It's no wonder they have a line all the time. There's nothing better than hot freshly baked bread! Maria and I both got to try out their beet salad. At first, we were a little hesitant to try out beets especially since we have never tasted beets before. But we're glad we did! The beets were the first thing to disappear from our plates haha! Our Breakfast: Almuerzo de Carne Asada Grilled Steak Breakfast Pollo en Crema y Loroco Chicken in Cream Sauce with Herbs and Vegetables Champurrado- A Mexican beverage prepared with flour, water/milk, cinnamon, and chocolate (sounds a little weird but we promise it's tasty!) If you have not yet tried Champurrado, you HAVE to try it here! Omg, my dudes, IT'S SO GOOD! You'll be missing out BIG time if you don't! #guatemalanfood #latinofood #beetsalad #sanfrancicso #carneasada #foodie #sdfoodies #foodadventures #foodcravings #foodcoma #foodblog #foodblogfeed #foodgram #foodstgram #foodpic #foodphotography #foodaddict #foodexplorer #fooddiary #foodhunter #foodlovers #foodphoto #foodblog #instafood #foodofinstagram #goodeats #foodporn #foodinfluencer #foodilysm #food

Yelp
Disappointed with the lack of service at this place unfortunately the staff does not have the customer service skills that are just simple to take care of their customers I got some food today hoping lunch was gonna be good but it was not the food no good the ladies seem to be confused with the orders the only great thing about this place is their sweet bread everything else can use a bit of help
google avatar

Otto N.

Yelp
Just came here for some atol de elote, ended up getting a doblada, chuchitos, enchiladas, champurradas and empanadas. All Guatemalan traditional dishes and everything is so good. I definitely recommend all their food.
google avatar

Ericka E.

Yelp
I love this place but today I was very disappointed to see have two people inside the small ordering area were not following rules about wearing masks. The employees should be responsible to keep an eye and enforce CDC guidelines. Also the guy prepping the food was not wearing gloves and was touching a dirty rag at the same time as he was making the breakfast sandwiches. Disgusting!!!!

John W.

Yelp
The bays best kept secret. The sandwhiches are so fire. Everything I had has blown my mind. I've gone twice in a week. Get a breakfest sandwhich or the Turkey club.
google avatar

Manuel E.

Yelp
I'm loving this place but i feel like the heart stays in the location spotted on 30th and Mission. But this is closer to me so it'll do. I come every morning or so to grab either my conchas, champurradas, or pan con todo y platanos with coffee or freshly made orange juice. A bit pricey but i have to say it's worth it man. The ladies that work here are so sweet and kind. Makes you feel like home.
google avatar

Yelp
Having breakfast here took me to nostalgia. The beans, eggs, sour cream and cheese reminded me a lot of mom's cooking. The sauce was slightly spicy and had the right consistency. It wasn't too watery nor too chunky. The bread is in house and it was good and delicious. The platanos were nicely cooked and the staff was super friendly. I would definitely come back here again if I am ever in the bay area.
google avatar

Ashlei R.

Yelp
The Taquitos de pollo were so good. Everything was seasoned well and not overly seasoned. I also tried the Plátanos and the Doblada and OMG!!! I'm going back. That's all I can really say. Try it yourself. Whether you agree or disagree, I personally had a great experience. Five stars!!!!!
google avatar

Grace N L.

Yelp
If you want authentic Guatemalan food add a really great price this is a place to go. They offer many traditional breakfast with fresh homemade bread and a cup of coffee. You can also get traditional banana leaf tamales by the dozen. We love all the options of pastries that they have. The owner is super friendly and makes you feel at home. It's a great place to watch soccer on a Sunday.
google avatar

Yelp
The name is misleading, it's actually a Guatemalan bakery/Cafe/lunch spot. Stopped in the other day just for coffee and found a diamond in the rough.... Very close to my in law's house, so I walked over there this morning with my infant son. I'm not super familiar with Guatemalteco food, so I thought best way to learn is to dive in head first. I ordered the Huevos Revultos con chorizo....#Amazing Comes with Queso Fresco, soupy black beans, sour cream, and a large roll of homemade pan. Chorizo y Huevos was a good choice. I can't wait to come back and try their enchiladas. Everyone that works there is extra pleasant and even the customers were extra friendly. Restaurant is clean and has a bakery inside that serves up Guatemalan baked goods....try the Gusano Chocolate. I would recommend his place to anyone, a true gem ! Went back for dinner & had a tostada w/ black beans and chicken w / black beans and rice. All good, but this is def more of a breakfast place
google avatar

Yelp
I stumbled upon this place last weekend and what a treat it was. There were plenty of people there. The kids and movement where quite joyous. I had a pastry and it was tasty and the coffee was decent. They also have more substantial foods like that of most taquerias, which I will have to try later. Parking is not too bad, there is plenty of table space and the room itself it spacious and bright. The only downside is that the power outlets don't work.
google avatar

Claire W.

Yelp
T'was bomb - friendly service - clean space. Ate there this morning, find myself wanting to relive this fried plantain- queso- sour creme experience agaiiiiinnn. The bread was good and the coffee was coo. Excited to see what's good on the menu that's $5 and under. My boyfriend likes their beans. He don't really even eat beans all like that.

Sergio M.

Yelp
Great place to eat. Work around the corner off Talbert every morning me and my uncle eat breakfast here. As Guatemalans it really reminds us of home. Can't go wrong with a pan con todo

Adam O.

Yelp
Best Latin bakery I've ever had ! Also they have amazing hot breakfast and coffee! So glad I found this place and can't wait to come back

Iris C.

Yelp
Good place to eat They bake her own bread So the French bread is always out of the oven nice and fresh
google avatar

Tanis S.

Yelp
A delightful discovery with superb coffee and excellent food - I had the plantains with black beans! The pastries are fresh and yummy
google avatar

Elisa G.

Yelp
Amazing authentic Guatemalan sweet bread (pan dulce) This is not a place to get fancy with your coffee since they don't have many options but definitely try their champurrado or atoles. Service can be a little slow sometimes. So don't come in if you're in a rush.
google avatar

Michael E.

Yelp
This place was so fucking good!! The owner showed us so much love!! Very friendly staff. The coffee and pan is a must. Hands down the best Guatemalan breakfast I ever had.
google avatar

Rio J.

Yelp
So glad they opened a second location. Original location is on Cortland and mission. Baked good fresh everyday. Their black beans, sour cream w/ plantains. Awesome ! Must try any of their sandwiches my fav is the Pan con Pollo adobada! Super nice and friendly staff. Everything is brand new and clean. A gem for this side of town! They serve breakfast and lunch.. Guatemalan food at its best!
google avatar

Jen M.

Yelp
Eveything at this place is wonderful!! Perfect portions fresh food. They also have fresh bread and it's sooo good. Love the queso fresco and beans.
google avatar

Tara W.

Yelp
Everytime I go I love it more and more....great quick stop close by work and I absolutely LOVE the beans they serve. I am NOT a beans fan by any means but I will get them from here and eat them ALL! All the wonderful treats and the pan...OMG basic fresh bread. Check it out....my go to dish Desayuno de Platanos (plantains with cheese, beans, cream and a roll).
google avatar

Edith S.

Yelp
Come in for the 1st time the cashier charge wrong 3 times then she said she fix it and as I'm looking at my receipt she still overcharged me $2.50
google avatar

Irma C.

Yelp
I went today, my first time and I will be back. I had breakfast and it was delicious. I had the eggs, beans and carne adovada plate, with fresh baked bread and coffee. I also had plantains and everything was tasty. It was full, many picking up orders to go, it was clean , but many of the tables were not bused quickly so it looked messy. It was good and I will return. I also bought tamales and will have them later, hopefully they will not disappoint.
google avatar

Amirah Q.

Yelp
Upon walking in, I really liked the place. It is clean, smells like a fresh bakery, and the environment was welcoming. I ordered a sweet bread (I will update the name of the bread when I go back) and platanos con crema. It was ultra delicious-- the bread was crunchy on the outside with sprinkled sugar, and soft and fresh. The platanos con crema (plantains with sour cream) was cooked to perfection-- sweet and soft. Altogether, I paid less than $5. My only worry is that I will come far too often, and embarrass myself. I'm glad I found this spot. The only downside is there isn't much street parking in the mornings-- but this is only because everyone is trying to get their taste of universal bakery!
google avatar

Debbie H.

Yelp
I have been coming here for a year now. I love it very authentic. Always busy. Open early in mornings get fresh breads and fresh squeezed oj.
google avatar

Byron B.

Yelp
I love this place!! The pastries and coffee are my go to in the mornings. I recently bought about 40 pieces of pastries for my co-workers for a morning meeting. Everything was devoured. My personal favorite is the bread pudding, but it's made in small batches, so it's not always available. The service is great, and the owners (George & Christian) are always there to greet people and ensure their customers are taken cared for. Keep up the great work, fellas!!
google avatar

Mona L.

Yelp
My brother in-law bought us some pineapple filled mini pies a couple months ago that were delicious! We came up to the city this weekend and we decided to stop by and buy some pies but they were out. :( I was so bummed. George offered to bake some fresh ones and come back in half hour. I came back after an hour and there was a whole tray full of warm pineapple pies! Thank you so much George for the excellent customer service! We will definitely be back but will be sure to get there early!

Thomas K.

Yelp
Fantastic burgers and excellent sushi for the price. Bar tender Aly was superb in taking care of us and her recommendations were spot on. Highly recommend stopping here.

Bryce D.

Yelp
Nice down to earth Guatemalan cafe, just an unpretentious pleasant place to grab a bite and a coffee. They got: - breakfast plates (eggs and stuff) - tortas - empanadas/tamales and a couple other items - pans dulces - coffee + espresso drinks I had a: - pache (tamale made with potatoes) - chuchito (smaller chicken tamale) - concha (sweet bread in scone shape) - americano Chuchito was good, covered in orange sauce that wasn't overpowering. Loved the concha, guy behind counter specifically said ppl drink it with coffee and it was perfect for dipping. Didn't dig the pache so much, but maybe that's cuz I don't like the mushy style tamales, prefer the grittier texture more common at Mexican places. I did not try the empanada or tortas, which have gotten really good reviews, so that may bump my review up. If I'm in the area I'd definitely go back to try other stuff.
google avatar

Rose C.

Yelp
Stay away from the beef torta! The meat was hard to bite into that I only ended up eating the bread.
google avatar

Karen B.

Yelp
I honestly think you should post your prices in your store. People would be inclined to buy more if they knew what prices they are dealing with especially when they have a big family.

Yessenia B.

Yelp
Completely disappointed with this place... Food is great but it's unfortunate that the employees can't take 2 seconds to pick up the phone when someone is trying to place an order for pick up. I called 23 times in order to place an order because they always have long wait lines and when someone finally did pick up they still put me on hold. I ended up placing the order when I was already parking in front of the restaurant. Really bad customer service.. SMH
google avatar

Manuel A.

Yelp
This place is awesome! All of the bread is delicious. My favorite is the bread pudding, but I always walk out with a big box of a variety of bread. The Longonizas(Guatemalan sausage) are crazy good. Full spectrum of authentic delicious Guatemalan food from tamales and chuchitos to the simple black beans. I stop by whenever I'm in the area.
google avatar

Liz A.

Yelp
I love this place! The tamales and pan con pollo adobada are so gooooood... I'm so happy they are in my neighborhood.

Manon L.

Yelp
We stayed in a hotel close by and looked for breakfast. This is a Latin American breakfast place with mainly Latin American food. Not really what we were looking for. The place was OK. People were nice.

Karen H.

Yelp
Everything here is delicious! I'm here about once a week! They have the best breakfast plates at reasonable prices. The bread is always fresh out the oven. Love this place just wish they hired more staff because on sat/sun there's usually a line out the door.
