Day Trips in London

"Home to Cambridge University, this historic city is situated just 49 minutes from London’s King’s Cross train station. Best known for its prestigious university buildings, Cambridge is full of historic charm. The Fitzwilliam Museum showcases an impressive collection of European and international artwork while the King’s College Chapel is a stunning example of Gothic architecture. If the weather permits, be sure to try punting, an unusual way of boating along Cambridge’s River Carn. It takes a while to get the hang of punting, where you guide and push the boat along by pressing a pole into the ground. You’ll find plenty of options all along the river to rent a boat yourself or have a guided tour. Afterward, you can do what many students do and have a picnic in one of the surrounding parks. If you prefer to have lunch in town, you’ll be able to savor Cambridge’s innovative restaurant scene, with its international street food market and excellent restaurants.Should you opt to stay a little later, you can make your own cocktails at the Cambridge Gin Lab. If you’ve organized it beforehand, you could then spend a night in university accommodation and walk in the footsteps of some of the world’s most successful scientists, politicians, and literary greats." - MATADOR_NETWORK

We recently took a day trip from London to visit the University of Cambridge, and it turned out to be a truly memorable experience. Starting our journey from Canary Wharf, we found the train ride both easy and relaxing, making the visit very accessible even just for a day. As someone who has always dreamed of seeing a world-renowned university like Cambridge, this visit felt particularly special. Upon arriving, we mostly explored the university grounds on foot, soaking in the rich academic atmosphere and the stunning architecture that spans centuries. While we didn’t go on a formal tour, just walking around the historic colleges and courtyards gave us a profound sense of the university’s legacy. There’s a certain magic to seeing places where some of the world’s greatest thinkers once studied and worked. One of the highlights was visiting King’s College Chapel—often simply referred to as King’s Cathedral by visitors. Its majestic Gothic architecture, tall stained-glass windows, and breathtaking vaulted ceilings left us in awe. Even from the outside, it stands as a symbol of Cambridge's grandeur and history. We also made sure to see the iconic Mathematical Bridge, a wooden footbridge at Queen’s College known for its elegant engineering. Legend has it that it was once built without any bolts or screws (though that part’s more myth than fact), but seeing it up close still sparked curiosity and admiration. Overall, the visit was a beautiful blend of history, architecture, and inspiration. Just being there—on the same cobblestone paths walked by Newton, Darwin, and countless Nobel laureates—was deeply meaningful. Whether you're an academic, a curious traveler, or someone who simply appreciates beautiful places with deep roots, Cambridge is a place that leaves a lasting impression.

Hundreds of years of history, and stories of academic, political, and business success, and strong community engagement. There’s a fabulous market, the selection and prices are really good. Optimum dining and drinking establishments (ie ‘The Anchor’) and the best Chelsea buns, … at ‘Fitzbillies’ offer friendly and attentive service. There’s also the Time Eating Corpus Christ clock and a Gin Laboratory for additional fun. Pinting is an option, prices vary so take note, and the sun can really beat down on a hot day. A great getaway, walk the many parks, ‘shop drop,’ and explore. You’ll love the visit. An easy ride from King’s Cross Station.. PS.. take the non stop direct run to Cambridge.

Even from the outside, the University of Cambridge is breathtaking. The historic buildings, grand colleges, and peaceful courtyards are full of charm and character. Walking around the city feels like stepping into a storybook, with stunning architecture and a calm, scholarly atmosphere. A must-see for anyone visiting Cambridge.

The city has an aura for heritage and is beautiful but my experience is it should be kept more clean. There are flies everywhere due to open bins.

We did a day visit to Cambridge University and walked around a few of the colleges. Be prepared for all the tourists! Definitely recommend punting - we went with Scudamore’s. Unless you’re really good at navigating a punt through a crowded river, I’d suggest refraining from doing it yourself. Just relax, enjoy your wine and take in the stunning views. Pleasantly surprised with all the breakfast and lunch options available in the area. You won’t go hungry 😃

It's more about just walking through the historical campus taking in the amazing scenery but also about learning the background how this place function. It is then easier to grasp how people who went through this place could contribute so much to science, mathematics, literature etc. This place is like the perfect garden bed with the right soils. The seeds are given the best possible conditions to grow, to blossom and some eventually into giants.

Beautiful and historic, many colleges making up the university and each with is own heritage and story behind it, a lot to see and beautiful architecture. People generally seem very nice and of course educated and shows the pleasant nature of discipline, good manners all around. Punting and visit to the museums and college are a must, a busy place but enjoyable.

Yelp
Cambridge is one of a handful of ancient English Universities. It's nestled in the SE of Britain in the hamlet of Cambridge, among fields, lakes, rivers. Unlike Oxford with tons of shops and brand eats, Cambridge is uniquely nestled among old houses, traditional side streets, markets and tiny bridges! Cambridge has an established Victorian-esque like rambling garden & path type experience. During the warm months a visitor may, besides walking the halls and lecture rooms, also take a wood 'punt', or raft (canoe) along the 'Cam' River. Cambridge is spread out. Wear sneakers. Yelp
The best part about touring the University of Cambridge is reveling in the sense of history this place represents. Walking the same grounds as influential and brilliant people, ranging from Sir isaac Newton and Lord Byron to Stephen Hawking and Francis Crick, was amazing to contemplate. I took my tour with Cambridge Alumni Tours. The fee was relatively modest and was well worth it as our tour guide added several details that would have been difficult to unearth on my own. The hallowed grounds are interesting to tour but the historical context and the greatness of the individuals associated with the University are what make it special.

Yelp
Beautiful campus! I had the opportunity to visit the University of Cambridge when I was studying in London. This institution was founded back in 1209, and is known to be the second-oldest university in the English-speaking world and the third-oldest surviving university - golly gee whiz! They also have a great mathematics/engineering program. We took the train here which was about 60 miles north of London. Definitely worth coming here for the day to roam around! +founded in 1209

Yelp
I've come in many places, but only once have I come on a bridge, which is why they named this town "Camebridge." And of course, named the University accordingly. Jolly rather good then chap. My brother was born in 1986, which is why this is review #1986. He attended Cambridge University, and he absolutely loves it. He's in love with it, actually. He often considers quitting his jobs so he can go back here. I went to Oxford (among other places) and we had a brief little rivalry as we were in the rival Universities at the same time. But I didn't love Oxford University (partly because it was my hometown school so there wasn't the magic of getting away), whereas he absolutely worshipped every cobble stone of Cambridge, of Gonville & Caius where he studied. He introduced me to the fancy dining halls with awful food, and delicious Thai food carts on the market. He was very lovely to my girlfriend. He showed us around the city and it was stunningly beautiful. I've been back to Cambridge many times since then but I've never enjoyed it as much as that first time with my brother. If it were up to me I'd give the Uni a 2 or 3 for being overrated, bumped up to a 4 because of the stunning old buildings. However, it was such a positive and wonderful influence in my brother's life, that I really have to give it a 5/5 for him.

Yelp
WOW!!! Can you say GORGEOUS??? Take me back to the good old days!!! Immediately, when I stepped on campus, the buildings and ambiance was very "Harry Potter-esque" This was the first place they discovered DNA!!! They even have a shopping strip on campus. We also went punting on the River Cam--that was pretty neat! It seems like the River runs throughout the campus, so it is great to get a quick view of the campus if you're in a rush. Be sure to check on King's College and Trinity College, where Issac discovered gravity with the apple tree! Unfortunately, that is not the same apple tree he sat under, but I was told it is the offspring of an offspring..so i guess great, great grandchild?

Yelp
Oh Cambridge, how I have missed you! The University of Cambridge consists of 31 different colleges who operate independently from one another. Each college has their own campus, their own academic criteria, and their own endowment. Classes there are a lot smaller and more focused on discussion. I took a course where I had no class time at all, but I met with my professor 3 times a week for about 2 hours each time, and we'll talk about my paper/topic and how I can expand my research. I grew fairly close to my professors, and I felt like I learned WAY more studying abroad than I would have in a quarter here in the States. Also unlike American schools, the colleges in the University of Cambridge are sprinkled throughout the town. You can probably walk around the circumference of the town in about 2 hours? I might be totally off... I'm usually just too fascinated by my surroundings that a two hour walk may have felt like a 20 minute walk. The River Cam meanders through many of the colleges - which brings me to my next topic... PUNTING! If you are ever in Cambridge, YOU HAVE TO GO PUNTING! It's so much fun! Some times after formal hall (a formal dinner we have on Fridays with bottomless wine), we would sneak out to the back, hop into a punt, and go punt racing in the dark. It's probably not the safest thing to do now that I think about it.. but at the time, it was such a thrill! If you decide to do it in the afternoon - like most people - it's such a nice treat to punt around the colleges, have a nice little picnic with a glass of wine..... aww I really miss this.... Every college also had their own porter who manages who comes in and out. So it's pretty safe to walk around at night by yourself. All in all, Cambridge is such a wonderful little city. Every single block is full of history and stories to share. I feel very fortunate to have been a student here. Oh, and make sure you check out Issac Newton's apple tree at Trinity College!

Yelp
I wish I could say I attended this beautiful educational institution, but I can't. I can, however, say that I've visited a couple of times during my few years of living in the UK. It is definitely distinguished and set apart from other universities. The Fitzwilliam Museum is wonderful! Plenty of rich history can be learned in a visit or two or three. :) The river is fabulous as well. Take pictures, relax, and enjoy! ::: (\_(\ *: (=' :') :* *.. (,(")(")°..*`»

Yelp
I'm surprised by how few reviews this has got. come on cantabs! What can I say about Cambridge; spent three years studying here and it is simply an immensely beautiful city. We have a continual running joke about how perfect the grass always seems to be. For anyone visiting the UK and in London, it's definitely worth the day trip up to check it out; lots of historical architecture. Ensure to go punting! As pointed out in the other reviews, there are times you don't want to visit cambridge as colleges are closed to the public. Exam term especially which is May to mid June. University wise, prepare to work; there will be fun here and there, lots of formals and events to go to but work will always be front and centre; it is a top university for a reason.... It's almost expected for many people to leave an event/party/night out early to go back to do work. You reap what you sow but I think intensity/amount done will come down to the individual. Hopefully this doesn't come across as too daunting. You do learn how to cope with the intensity, though no one ever seems to get over complaining about it!

Yelp
This place is one of the most nicest places I have been to in the UK. If had to go back to a University, it would be here and I would never leave. When in the UK, Cambrige should be one of those places to visit on your list.

Yelp
Beautiful university! The buildings and the grounds around campus are amazing. The architectural elements have a medieval castle kind of feel. I would recommend taking one of the little "gondola" boat rides on the river. There are a bunch of different companies that offer boat rides. I think one company is the same as the next, so try to find the cheapest. They are usually run by college students. They go around the campus and the town and give a great tour of things you couldn't see on foot!
